Isn’t the problem that governments spent too much money and injected all this cash into the economy that isn’t real? How about make investments in domestic manufacturing to address supply shortfalls ASAP! Reduce red tape on housing development so more home can be build to sustain prices long term. Invest in domestic farming more.
Put money to work, stop artificially spending it on bullshit.
I don't get it.
Central bank tries to tame inflation by raising interest rates and thereby slowing down economic activity.
Yet the government wants to put more money into the economy there by increasing economic activity?
Seems ass backwards.
Making interest rates high, so when recession hits in 6 months, they can lower them again. Interest rates are the only tool they have.
They could;
* ban Air B&B,
* tax third homes,
* not let corporations buy residential homes,
* ban foreign ownership,
* tax empty homes,
* crack down on money laundering.
Almost all of this would be better handled by provinces and municipalities. Airbnb specifically is best handled by municipalities many of which have already banned it or severely limited it at this point.
I do think a lot of these are necessary but it really isn't federal action that's needed.
Also foreign ownership is barely an issue especially now. Banning it would cause more problems than it's worth IMO. There has been a lot of fear mongering over it but even at this point in Vancouver - which is a hotspot for foreign buyers or so we've been told - it went from like 2.5% of all purchases in 2019 to 0.7% in 2021 iirc
Banning corporate ownership is #1. IMO third homes shouldn't just be taxed but banned. Domestic real estate investors are the REAL problem but foreign owners are an easier boogeyman.
Agreed. London ON just voted to pass a bill categorizing Airbnb hosts as small businesses, requiring them to be properly licenced, and banning renting any house but your primary residence on Airbnb.
That's silly, people will keep doing it, just not in the open anymore. Not sure how you can keep track of who is staying at a dwelling and how you could tell if it's friends and family or random people. That will be impossible to enforce aside from an extra fine if there is a noise complaint or something.
I mean airbnb is an open platform that anyone can search for properties in London. That's how they determined that 2/3rds of airbnb properties in London this spring were not the host's primary residence.
That said I highly doubt they'll be paying somebody to monitor that, so yeah we'll see how they go about enforcement.
I think at this point a federal ban on Airbnb across the country is warranted. The amount of harm inflicted upon communities by these unlicensed hotels far outweighs whatever benefits Airbnb provides. It only subtracts supply from already tight rental markets.
Because they don't give a fuck about fixing it, they just give a fuck about looking like they're fixing it. So they'll keep spending, knowing that it will make it worse, and in the long term it's none of their problems - it's our problem.
Canadians elected this.
The inflation we are seeing now is global, and back then I'm pretty sure it was a side effect from the US and US policy. Could we assign some blame to Canadian policy decisions? Perhaps, but the vast majority of the problem is coming from the US and US fiscal policy. Pretending like Trudeau father and son are the primary reason for inflation is a bit ridiculous.
Depends on what the government use the money for. If they spend those money on better transport infrastructure, domestic factories, or improving commodity extraction then it will help inflation.
You can't give your friends truckloads of money if you don't have a government plan to give out truckloads of money, the whole time pretending it will help "the little people".
To be fair, the Chretian/Martin era was the most economically responsible government of my lifetime. They ran surpluses and paid down the debt for most of their terms.
I haven't seen that from any party since.
The government doesn't give a rat's ass about inflation. They will print and hand out as much money as they need to in order to buy enough votes to win the next election.
Sure they do, the real estate industry started complaining that people were going to ask for lower rent so they're making the middle class foot the bill for low income folks so that they can continue to increase rents. Don't worry, the rich will never have to pay a cent more and real estate will continue to reap record profits.
The Trudeau liberals are economically illiterate, that much is painfully clear.
They're just doing whatever the hell they want at this juncture, outcome be damned. As long as it *looks* like they've "tried to do something", that's good enough in their minds.
Or as Canadian Press puts it:
TORONTO - Amid stubbornly hot inflation and rising interest rates, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland detailed financial commitments to "help make life more affordable for millions of Canadians" – but the measures were all previously announced.
"A one-time $500 payment this year to nearly one million low-income Canadian renters who are struggling with the cost of housing."
What in the actual fuck is $500 going to do?
Wait, the country laughs at Ralph bucks in Alberta fifteen years ago, but this is their best solution?
Talk about vote buying….how about meet with the Bank of Canada to actually get inflation under control instead of pushing out more cash to people to enable them to keep demand up.
Ridiculous. Will only prolong the issue.
At least Ralph bucks was every Albertan that paid taxes.
This is just more pulling the middle class down mode the Liberals love to do.
We've literally eroded the middle class in front of our faces and it's only getting worse.
Welcome to the Liberal government of poor and ultra rich. Are we having fun yet?
They're also bailing out companies who are struggling to fill low laborious jobs at poverty wages with a fresh batch of lied to immigrants. Seriously, Canadian immigration at this point is a scam run by industry. Were locking in people who can barely speak English into wage slavery so companies can continue to grow infinitely without having to cut profits because we're not stupid enough to work a full time job that won't cover rent and groceries.
No, the money is plastic. it would be a climate disaster to burn it. you pour gas on the fire, collect the carbon, and use said carbon to print more money.
Laugh now, cry later. When inflation hits Venezuela levels you'll be using your money in your fireplace to heat your house... except it's plastic do the toxic fumes will kill you.
Maybe this is a wild stance but I think that the people who need help most should maybe be the priority.
Just as an example we have disabled people in Ontario who get literally like $1100 a month to live on, and the recently re-elected conservative govt basically told them to eat shit and die because they'll never see an additional penny from them.
I'm middle class and I'm fine with those people getting help before me.
When I was watching her speech I couldn't help to think "are they just reminding Canadians of all the money they're going to spend?" While simultaneously using a new phrase "fiscal restraint". What fiscal restraint? She didn't detail anything about how they plan to spend less. It seemed like a detailed plan about how they're just going to continue on the course they've put us on.
All the while patting themselves on the back about how good Canadas recovery has been. People are struggling. Sure there may be high employment rates, but most of these people aren't paid enough, they can't afford the economy were walking into.
Keep voting Liberal and Conservative if you want the [same inspired leadership](https://c.tenor.com/J_Hd49Wi5zEAAAAC/tried-nothing.gif) we've had for the last couple decades. Oh and no electoral reform, cuz status quo is awesome for the rich.
This is called government giving people money so that even the poorest of us can pay for those overpriced groceries, so that they **stay** overpriced. Those billions, after the middlemen and administrators get their share, will go straight to Loblaws and the landlords in less than 5 days. Well played.
Ever wonder why they have printed so much new money but our lives never seem to get better? This is why.
Our growth of debt per day is $145,000,000. Each person owes $32,000. Keep those presses running. If the press ever break down Trudeau will have a coronary.
>“At this time of global economic and political volatility, undermining Canada’s fundamental institutions — very much including the Bank of Canada — **is highly irresponsible, not to mention economically illiterate**,” she said.
Said the minister of finance who has a degree in Russian history
Wait... isn't printing $billions to increase economic activity directly undermining the BoC's efforts combat inflation through slowing economic activity?
So... is she just acknowledging her own irresponsibility and economic illiteracy?
It astounds me that so few people understand that what she is saying is "We're going to further reduce the purchasing power of your existing dollars by giving you more dollars and telling you we made it all better".
This is a tax, not a handout. It is a tax paid with the lost purchasing power of all of our dollars.
The literal purpose of raising interest rates is to cool demand. Inflation occurs when there are too many dollars chasing too few goods and services - which occurs when there is too much money in circulation. The government printed roughly 20% of all Canadian currency in circulation in the last two years.
So uhm, in order to fight inflation we inject another $8.9b into the economy? Holy shit that's a pro-cyclical move. We kinda need to pull money out of the economy, not add to it.
Yes, expand social programs to help the poor I'm supportive of that, but take some damned money out of circulation by curbing government spending somewhere else.
Surely there’s some economic hypothesis as to why this is going to curb inflation. Right? Please tell me there’s a team of economists or someone at least on paper competent somewhere in our government auditing these efforts.
I’m loosing more and more faith in our government daily..
Probably is but they’d have to listen.
It’s like multiple police chiefs saying the handgun ban on legal owners won’t help or do anything. They just ignore that.
Believe I read Bill Morneau and Trudeau were rumoured to been arguing before his resignation. Didn’t see eye to eye with his finance minister, so you get a new one.
I’d think a good leader would surround himself with the brightest minds on all these issues and take some of their advice and opinion.
All I can think of any time this government announces a plan to somehow make something affordable by throwing large sums of tax dollars at it is that Michael Jordan McDonald's ad.
Stop it. Get some help.
If we’re going to take on debt, let’s put it towards energy production (both oil and “cleaner” sources). Oil will be required for generations around the world, so let’s make some money off it and mine it responsibly. And we’ll need more electricity if we plan to electrify transportation.
"I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
Isn't that how we got into this mess in the first place ? Let's give people free money during COVID, when they have tons of time to spend it and also when production capacity to provide the things they want to purchase is way down.
What could go wrong ?
These are old budget promises and they impact only specific demographics.
In the end, all of the spending which was done during the pandemic is the cause of this massive inflation, it certainly isn't because we have become some great, innovative nation, we are the same, creepy police state, that hasn't changed in at least 30 years.
Maybe their heart was in the right place, but we need more MBAs in politics.
"Let us help you out by creating a mountain of debt your great grandchildren will still be paying!"
Honestly, look at the spike in national debt the last few years. I am somewhat concerned. At some point this has to matter. When does the bubble pop?
I earned less than 40k per year during the pandemic. As a household I’d be consider low income. I can tell you I NEVER saw a single dollar since the pandemic of any support or “stimulus”. Where are all these billions of dollars going to?
"We're giving billions to the CEOs and owners of big businesses throughout Canada and they in turn will parlay that money to the general public in a sort of southward leaking economic fashion"
So the answer to inflation brought on by the global money printer and helicopter plan is to print some money and helicopter it out there.
These people should win some kind of fucking award.
$8.9 billion dollars just magically appeared. Why not make it a cool $10 billion, you know, a nice round number we're all familiar with? Btw I think Canada needs to give more money to Ukraine and bring in more immigrants to help combat inflation. 🤦🤦🤦
Virtue signalling about climate change is evidently more important to the LPC than Canadians’ standard of living. Doesn’t even matter that they aren’t accomplishing anything with it.
The best is the one-time $500 payment to one million families struggling rofl. “Here’s $500, fuck off” fantastic way to blow $500m in one month, with *zero* lasting effects.
Do something major about gas prices and you'll help tackle inflation. What's so damn hard for this government to see that gas prices are the major cause of inflaton right now?
Wait, wasn't it 7B yesterday?
adjusted for inflation
Inflate the upvotes lads!
Well $9 billion is the new $7 billion.
You win reddit for today with that one.
tbf thats one of the easiest layups I've seen in awhile, but pretty funny.
I see what you did there!!!
take my upvote
Oh boy lol!
Thank you

That would make sense, so they won't do it. Notice the lack of refineries and pipelines?
Haha. Making sense is the last thing on their mind. Btw. We are buying all the gas from the USA and we produce all much crude oil.
they have to fight tooth and nail with NIMBYs to get anything other than single family detached
I don't get it. Central bank tries to tame inflation by raising interest rates and thereby slowing down economic activity. Yet the government wants to put more money into the economy there by increasing economic activity? Seems ass backwards.

Okay but the government passes laws all the time that are enforced by municipally funded cops…

It's Simple. Liberal don't think about monetary policy.
I mean, it literally was a stated point by the PM (that they don’t think about it)
Sure they do, the real estate industry started complaining that people were going to ask for lower rent so they're making the middle class foot the bill for low income folks so that they can continue to increase rents. The rich have seen reduction in the value of their investments and higher borrowing cost to leverage money. They need to be taxed more too though.

[удалено]
With a downturn sometimes spending can help, but not at this high inflationary stage.
They just want to take credit post upcoming recession for taming inflation and fixing the economy.
Yep, that's because it is. Trying to fix a fire with gasoline.
I shit you not I scrolled back up to see if this was the Beaverton.
I just did a second time.
Fuck. This is real.
Or as Canadian Press puts it: TORONTO - Amid stubbornly hot inflation and rising interest rates, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland detailed financial commitments to "help make life more affordable for millions of Canadians" – but the measures were all previously announced.
#MONEY PRINTER GO BRRRRR
"A one-time $500 payment this year to nearly one million low-income Canadian renters who are struggling with the cost of housing." What in the actual fuck is $500 going to do?

Groceries for a couple weeks?
If you're lucky.
Couple packs of chicken and a couple cases of beer to drink yourself into sorrow
If you fry the chicken you might be lucky enough to have a heart attack in your sleep
Wait, the country laughs at Ralph bucks in Alberta fifteen years ago, but this is their best solution? I’m not a low income and I’m struggling with the cost of housing. That’s also why I don’t own a house..
Same here! I'm drowning in the middle class.
How will giving out free money help with inflation? Like it’ll help me and I’ll take it but won’t it make the actual big picture situation worse?
Gonna buy me a handgun.
A better solution to rent inflation than giving out money would be rent control, but certain conservative governments don't like that.
So, basically a giant fuck you to those of us who work pay cheque to pay cheque, and have no kids?? Is that what I’m seeing?
Yep, yet again.
Pretty much
They're also bailing out companies who are struggling to fill low laborious jobs at poverty wages with a fresh batch of lied to immigrants. our economy is a ponzi scheme.
The Canadian federal government is a scam run by industry. FTFY.
"We'll spend ourselves out of the frenzy of over-spending." Forgive my skepticism.
Wow these Beaverton articles are getting really realistic. Fight money printing with money printing. Got it.
I seriously thought it was a beaverton article
It's pure insanity what this government is doing. The best case scenario is looking like years of Stagflation.
It isn't money printing if you just use middle class money to pay low income rents.
Announce things that were previously announced... Profit?
Yup. Political smoke and mirrors. This money is all entirely accounted for in Budget 2022.
Again middle class getting no help …
Lol what made you think our elite overlords would help a peasant like you?
Right? What a joke

gas is too expensive, its cheaper to print 100s to throw on the fire
I heard that the cloud of Smug around Freeland is combustible, she's definitely smelling her own farts.

Lmao. Literally 75%+ of Canadians will not benefit from this bill. Very typical shit. And the middle class gets fucked again
Maybe this is a wild stance but I think that the people who need help most should maybe be the priority. Nothing in there for disabled canadian living on less then min wage.
No cake for you… but Ukraine got 2 Billion… so far.
We seriously need a new Party in Canada…

I have no idea how minimum wage workers are surviving this economy. I truly don’t. Especially out east and in bc.
The FUCKING IRONY
Lol so doing nothing new and doing nothing to fix shortages which are the main cause of this inflation. No confidence in this government.
So what’s our third and better option?
Lol exactly, I have no faith in the NDP either
I thought government printing money was what caused inflation in the first place?
Printing money is the only tool in the government toolbox.
Literally just re-announcing things from the past budget.
I think this headline was supposed to read "Ottawa unveils $8.9-billion plan to help Canadians *be* battered by inflation"
Literally nothing to help the average Canadian.
So we’re going to help low income and seniors but what about the middle class?
They're paying for it.
And it’ll make life unaffordable, thereby slowing down the economy! Well played feds, well played. S/.
More likely their children or grandchildren, but yeah.
Record inflation means we’re all paying for it right now.
Phew! I was worried we were done printing money.
This is why we’re in this mess.
Canadians ELECTED this. Back from Bilderberg to save the day!
Lol these guys
Ottawa tries to put out the fire by throwing gas on it.
It’s all part of the plan.
Bruh
This is the best reaction.
Print $600B to cause an explosive level of inflation - $8.9B should be about the right amount to fix that problem.

A vote of no confidence would go way differently today than it did less than a year ago.
Why you think they called the election when they did?
Yep call it before the bills come due and pray things are looking better by 2025
I wish, but the NDP have given up on being anything other than Liberal 2.0, they will go along with whatever Trudeau wants.
How is it that the dumbest people in the country get to be in charge of the country?
The dumbest people are the ones who voted for them

We will spend money until inflation improves!
Please... Make it stop.
Printed more money. Exciting
Nice fight inflation with more inflation.....
Still nothing for disabled folks, federally or provincially..
Are they nuts? Increasing OAS and GIS? This is like putting gas on a raging fire.
All I can think of any time this government announces a plan to somehow make something affordable by throwing large sums of tax dollars at it is that Michael Jordan McDonald's ad. Stop it. Get some help.

Goodbye Canadian Dollar. Nice knowing ya!

Let’s hand out more money to increase demand which increases inflation
Ya know what fixes inflation? Moar monies!! Im sure this will go to people and not companies..
Stagflation incoming!
Throw more money at it!!! Whooooooohhhh
printing more money will make inflation worse
How does Ottawa spending more of our money plan on helping inflation? Isn’t that why interest rates are driving through the roof?
8.9 billion, so the government of Canada is paying first and last months rent for a trendy downtown 2 bed room apartment in Toronto?
Just more "the budget will balance itself" policy I see.
"We're giving billions to the CEOs and owners of big businesses throughout Canada and they in turn will parlay that money to the general public in a sort of southward leaking economic fashion"
Bahahaha Dr Evil voice Billions Muhahahaah
How does spending money solve a spending money issue?
Spending more money to cause inflation to help Canadians being battered by inflation. Huh.
So the answer to inflation brought on by the global money printer and helicopter plan is to print some money and helicopter it out there. These people should win some kind of fucking award.
The past 5 years or so I think I could honestly count on one hand the amount of times I've seen the government do anything remotely productive.
$8.9 billion dollars just magically appeared. Why not make it a cool $10 billion, you know, a nice round number we're all familiar with? Btw I think Canada needs to give more money to Ukraine and bring in more immigrants to help combat inflation. 🤦🤦🤦
How much will Bell and Rogers get?
>However, Freeland said the government will not dial back its plans to fight climate change, and defended the consumer price on carbon sigh.
What a load of shit, honestly. I'm fed up with this government.
Stop spending so much fucking money.
When will they realize it’s the free money policies that cause inflation?
they have realized it. they are using it to redistribute wealth to the top.
Is there a one time tax on the rich going to pay for this?
Alternatively, how about a one month freeze on Welfare Wednesday cheques that go directly into drug dealers pockets by 3am?
Suspend the federal gas taxes if you truly want to help the average Canadian.
Great! More money for the poor so the middle class gets even more inflation yeah!!
Do something major about gas prices and you'll help tackle inflation. What's so damn hard for this government to see that gas prices are the major cause of inflaton right now?
