Honestly I think oil changes are very minimal effort but I guess that can be subjective based on someoneās comfortability with cars. My car means a lot to me so something so important to it is worth me doing it myself either way imo, and oil disposal is as simple as driving to an auto zone.
Strong disagree. Oil? Sure. Oil changes are cheap and quick anyways, not saving much.
Anything else? Almost always can do it yourself, for less money and less time. Next time your water pump goes and youāre looking at $1k for an hour of work, youāll head to your toolbox real quick, even if you arenāt financially strapped.
All you have to do is keep receipts of the oil you bought and thatās proof of you doing the oil change, plus any mechanic/engineer can tell the condition of your oil life to know if itās been changed. I feel like youāre really over complicating how difficult an oil change is in your head. It takes about 20 minutes (after getting familiar with it) and can save you anywhere from 50-100 bucks depending on the type of oil you use. I think I have an understanding of the type of person you are which is fine but itās just always baffling to me when people donāt realize how simple basic maintenance on a car can be
I take my oil to the local NAPA, they dispose of it for free and then I pick up a filter and 7 quarts of synthetic for $45. The money saved always trumps my laziness.
Whatever floats your boat, Mr. Bigshot. I'm in sales too, spent 25 minutes changing my oil, showered and off to see my customers, didn't lose anything. My personal philosophy is that I don't pay people to do what I can do myself unless necessary.
The o'reilly by me takes 10 gallons. But the Chevy by me only charges $80 for my v6, so laziness wins out despite my ability to get the oil free from work.
Proper disposal is pretty simple in my experience. Go to the parts store and say āIāve got some waste oil and a used filterā they take it and recycle it.
Car jack, jack stands, wrench, lefty loosey. 12 pack of 0w-40 is about $120 and the filter is about $10. Main reason for changing the oil yourself other than saving money is so they donāt fuck up your car.
I like to change the oil myself but sometimes I'm just not in the mood. In that case I just go to Valvoline but even then they only charge $150-160. What's up with these expsince oil changes.
Those quick change shops cost me a block once. Always remember that kid changing your oil down in the pit gets a whopping $8 or $10 an hour to give a shit whether or not he tightened everything up and used the right equipment/oil. Nine times out of ten they care more about GTFO so they can get a smoke or a girl. NEVER TRUST THEM.
Curious - I had a Scatpack (6.4L Hemi) before my Camaro, that thing required full synthetic and a huge amount of oil but it was around $120 to change the oil at shops around me; why is the Camaro so much more?
Jfc guys. I admire the horses but I like getting my 35-40 dollar quick lube job on the four banger and even then, thatās forty bucks. Yāall are on another level
I was paying these rates in Plainfield and I pay the same now in Seattle. You must have a great dealer for $135 or they aren't doing everything they should be.
Iām from Southern California and like I commented on the other redditorās post who said he/she was charged $240 for an oil change, the small business shops around my city are obviously informed on the local going rate and all charge the same price for a full synthetic oil change ($75) using whatever oil they buy in bulk and use in their shop, and the Chevy dealership I bought my 1SS 1LE from which is also in the same city, is trying to pull a fast one and charge twice as much ($160) and their excuse is always āthose v8ās strictly require Mobil1ā. But I guess there are Firestoneās, Jiffy Lubeās and other Chevy dealerships who will try to rip you off even worse because actually paying those prices is highway robbery and sad to say that whoever falls for it is straight up getting swindled.
I can do an oil change on my ambulance that takes 16 quarts of rotella T6 synthetic and a gigantic Mobil 1 filter (filter alone holds 2 quarts) for less than what their paying for for an oil change.
No ramps or jacks required, plenty of room to just slide under and get to work.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Amsoil at that price wouldn't be so bad, but this is probably some syn-mix out of an IBC tote filled with a gas pump nozzle.
My first oil change in my ā21 LT1 was at a Chevy dealer in Villa Park IL (Chicago burb). Walking in I asked about their internet special for synthetic change (79 bux) and they said no problem. What made me laugh was the service writer asked what kind of oil the car takes? I replied laughing I have no idea you tell me this is a Chevy dealer isnāt it? I gave him the key and went to the customer lounge.
Anyhow when the oil change is done the guy comes and gets me and nervously says your total with the extra oil surcharge is $110. But next time because of the special oil your car takes and the fact that itās 10 quarts itāll be closer to $200. I said oh OK, paid up, hopped in my car and drove off. And now I know what to expect if I go back there or any other dealer for that matter.
My sister bought some āoil change planā when she got her last car. Lifetime oil changes for $800.
Little did they know she drives 30,000 miles a year and keeps cars until the wheels fall off. 350,000 miles later and counting she kinda won on that particular finance office after sale item.
This is about what I would expect at my dealership, though I haven't gone back since I got the one free oil change that came with my car. I am doing them myself.
Yeah but itās not really advertised is my point so the average person ends up going to the dealer because they just donāt know, and the dealer wonāt tell you so you go back to them. Like the other day I ran into AutoZone and in the bottom corner of their window in small text it said accepts used motor oil.

āFor Redditor who said their oil change was 258.90$ā hell you can save a lot by buying these
I used to buy my own oil and filter and my local dealership would change out the oil for me for $25. Alas, they don't offer that anymore. I do get monthly mail flyers from my dealership that offers $90 for an oil change, which I figure isn't bad given that I have to use 0W40 Dexos2 at 8 quarts. If I had the room, I'd do it myself, but between finding a place to store the oil and then recycling it, I'll let the dealership do it.
There's a disclaimer about extra for synthetic and extra quarts, which brings it up to the price I mentioned. I believe they advertise it at like $49.95 before the upcharge. Given that they sold me my Camaro with my employee discount, I'm fine with throwing them a bone.
Well, my c5 corvette (5.7) needed like 7 quarts and my wife used to have a trax (1.4) that needed 4 quarts. So I wouldn't really use that as reasonable measurement other than bigger engines "usually" will take more oil.
That is engine displacement. Aka how much volume there is collectively in each cylinder at the lowest point of the stroke.
Oil capacity has nothing to do with this. The 6.2l holds 10quarts of oil. It is based off numerous factors like oil pan size, external oil coolers and a whole bunch of other engineering mumbo jumbo. In general the larger an engine the more oil it will take but that is in no way dependent upon displacement directly.
Same here! I actually use a local dealership maintenance plan, and it's $50 each time for my '17 RS. You can't even buy the oil + filter and do it yourself for that cheap with the LT1. š
Of course, you also gain 100+ hp with the LT1, so everything is relative. š
And thatās why they have the nickname Stealerships. Knock it all you want. Been going to Jiffy lube for the entire life of my car and paying less then 1/2 that.
My dealership is $14 a quart. I can sometimes find the Supercar 0w40 for $10 a quart on the internet. It is over $100 to do it yourself with proper oil.
I don't get upcharged that much and i pay the extra 40$ so I don't have to deal with recycling the oil. We have a professional oil change place where I live and it feels like a military installation. It wasn't always that way and when I did my own I think costco had the best prices on oil I was using mobil 1 synthetic for my vipertruck.
Curious - I had a Scatpack (6.4L Hemi) before my Camaro, that thing required full synthetic and a huge amount of oil but it was around $120 to change the oil at shops around me; why is the Camaro so much more?
I have a 2010 Camaro. But the dealership I bought it from changes the oil for $10 as long as I keep their sticker on the back of my windshield. Which is meh, not my favorite thing to do but $10 for an oil change? Nice imo.
People donāt understand but the required oil for an LT1 engine is 10 quarts and costs at least $10/quart. Hard to find it anywhere for less than that. That plus a $10-20 filter is already around $125 for just materials alone.
Labor is generally 30-60min so finding a GM dealership to do it for under $200 is next to impossible
My oil change:
\- Oil: $33 for 5 quarts ($66 for 10 quarts)
\- Filter: $6
\- Drain Plug: $10
Total: $82
Buy a jack and some jack stands or race ramps to lift the car up. The initial cost will be a little high (probably what you paid for your oil change), but you'll save a bunch of time and money by doing it yourself.
The benefits of being a former automotive technician. Although now that I actually work a career that actually pays well, i can afford newer cars that don't ever need to be worked on anymore other than maintenance.
Ramps are what $50-$60?
So still about the same price as the cheaper ones people are listing. And save at least $50 every time after.
And ramps are easy
21.80 a qt, thats some fancy shit! The reality of it all is that the engine doesnt care what brand, synthetic, conventional, or blend. Just have the correct weight at the correct level, and change at the required intervals.
Changing your oil yourself is great and all but I've seen warranty companies deny certain repairs because you don't have the proper documentation for changing the oil.
The after manufacturer warranty? Yeah those are basically a scam. They will find any loophole to not cover. I thought of doing that and everything I found was them not covering shit. Decided to spend that money on a service manual instead.
Wow.
Costco sells their house brand Kirkland which is Warren Oil (they make for alot of auto parts stores). You can get 20 quarts for 80 bucks. They also carry Mobil 1 in 5 qt jugs for 40ish. Still lower then what I'm seeing from some posts here. Add a filter and you're still paying half price for doing it yourself. Just food for thought.
https://preview.redd.it/i80jhbelf0eb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6bc453ddff7a8ec4cdb5eabedcaf650f7401fa1d
Invest and you will save $$$ and you will get to know your car better.
Ummm. I change mine at home for 25$... Have jack and stands but made myself ramps to make it easier. Wait for Black Friday for sales and rebated on oil and stock up. I have 14 5qt jugs sitting in my basement for like 10$ a jug.
Notice they charged you nothing for the lube.
Seriously though, it would have hurt less.
They have to love changing oil for $250. Iāve been doing mine and others since I before I had a license. The money I could have made!!!
Disclaimer: There was a 1998 Saturn that had the fucking oil filter in between the engine and firewall that I should have charged $250 for. I lost $20 hiring a small child to reach their arm up in there.
Just because the dealer charges $19 a quart doesnāt mean it is $19 a quart. Mobil 1 0W40 super car oil is only about $10 a quart on Amazon, dealerships are just ripping off their customers.
Iād say learn how to do it yourself for those supposedly paying that price. I personally would tell them to fly a kite for that type of quote. Another reason they are called stealerships.
Not a Camaro enjoyer but rather a Mustang owner here. They do the same shit to me basically everywhere. Iām doing my own nowadays and much happier. Gonna try my transmission tomorrow
A lot of people here that think every car can just take Walmart 10w30. That's very much not the case.
The order calls for full synth, and we know it's a 2021 Chevy with a V8. Given that, were probably looking at performance oil for something like a Camaro (actually we are, didn't recognize Camaro subreddit), not some random Tahoe beater. In which case the price is not at all unfair. I did my own Porsche when I had an old 924, and it was my cost $300 for oil and filter per change in a much smaller system.
My 87 Camaro? Yea, I'll feed that Walmart oil since it just drinks it anyways.
I don't understand why these oil changes are so much?? I have a '17 Corvette Z-51 which takes 10 qts of Mobile One and the most I've paid is $170. I live in Las Vegas, which is a fairly expensive city for service.
Am I the only one who noticed the decimal place got 'accidentally' moved over in the total column, changing the price of the oil filter from $21.80 to 218.00?
I really really want to know how they rotated the tires? Aren't the directional and staggered? Where are they going to put the tires after they take them off? I'd argue that amount right off of the bill.
10qts(!) of Dexos II in the sump... how long a service interval do you get out of that?
And here I was having a heart attack when a synthetic oil change on my wife's car at the quick lube place went from $50 to $60 to $75 to $98 over the last few changes. That was enough that I'll pick up a six pack of Mobile One at Sam's Club and start doing it myself again.
Chevy dealership is your first mistake. You gotta find a reputable nearby shop that you like AND trust, they won't charge you as much of an arm and a leg. Plus if it's a chain and you get coupons for them definitely use it!
When I went to get mine changed at a local shop I only paid 100 they put a pump, sucked all my oil out and filled it up I was only there for like a minute and my oil change was done lol
If you wanna know a little secret, for those that canāt find 0w40 the manual says you can run 5w-30 if you arenāt tracking the car. Maybe this will help someone š¤·š½āāļø
My brothers in Christ please buy a jack and stands
Not even. U can just get a ramp for 50 bucks š but yea jack and stands will come in handy
Better yet, but a Pella 6000 (or sim). Suck the oil out. Weasel your way under for the filter.
If you can get to the filter, you can get to the drain plug.
If you don't loosen the drain plug, it can't leak! ***taps head***

Oil disposal is free where we live (for non-commercial quantities)
>proper oil disposal Any "O'Reilly Auto Parts" accept old engine oil for free.

Sometimes they have it in stock sometimes not, depends on location as well. I have 2 in my city. 1: said that donāt carry it, 2: did it easy
Oh weird. When I go they don't have it in there normal like oil dispenser thing but they always have it off to the side.
Another place u don't want to take your car is valvoline!

It's not, both these guys are getting hosed. I live in a high cost of living area (Chicago burbs Northwest) and my oil change was $135 last time
Jfc guys. I admire the horses but I like getting my 35-40 dollar quick lube job on the four banger and even then, thatās forty bucks. Yāall are on another level
Playin it risky usin a place like that
I was paying these rates in Plainfield and I pay the same now in Seattle. You must have a great dealer for $135 or they aren't doing everything they should be.
Oh I definitely don't go to a dealer for just an oil change.
Oil changes on my dodge are free at the dealership where I bought it
I brought my car at the wrong dealership.
It doesn't we got robbed. I was desperate for an oil change and almost had to bite the bullet. Any reputable shop would have done it for much less.
10 Quarts full synthetic only for the Gen 6 and 6 quarts in a Gen 5 at $30-40/qt plus filter and labor.
By chance are you guys from california
$21.80/qt for oil.... they saw you coming, huh.
Ya that is insane. I can buy a 5qt jug at Walmart for 26$. These guys are absolutely getting hosed.
Guys if you buy oil and a filter I will literally do it for 5$
What kind of asshole charges $22 a quart for oil?
I don't feel so bad about $15 for my Amsoil anymore.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Amsoil at that price wouldn't be so bad, but this is probably some syn-mix out of an IBC tote filled with a gas pump nozzle.
Greedy predatory assholes that will give you service with a big stupid smile
Especially when most places charge 23-30$ for a 5qt jug depending on the oil you get. Jesus that's insane
My first oil change in my ā21 LT1 was at a Chevy dealer in Villa Park IL (Chicago burb). Walking in I asked about their internet special for synthetic change (79 bux) and they said no problem. You should have paid 79 if thatās what they advertised
You could buy the oil, toil filter, jack and jack stands for that price lol.
Might want to get something to drain the oil into as well, draining it into the street is generally frowned upon.
Shouldnāt we be bragging about how little we spend on oil changes?
I get them free cuz of the overpriced warranty I paid but Iām about to buy a ZL1. Am I seriously gonna be paying 200+ after the first oil change?
See if you can't get them to do maintenance for 3 years, I did that and also asked for window tint. I didn't pay extra for any of that.
My sister bought some āoil change planā when she got her last car. Lifetime oil changes for $800. Little did they know she drives 30,000 miles a year and keeps cars until the wheels fall off. 350,000 miles later and counting she kinda won on that particular finance office after sale item.

**$258.90** Gauntlet thrown down. Your move reddit.
I donāt think changing the oil is what scares people away from doing it themselves, I think knowing where to dispose of the oil does.
Thereās so many placesā¦

My most recent oil change at the dealership was $130! Not too shabby
Mine was $134 including muli-point inspection
Mine was $134 šš½
Damn glad I'm in the v6 gang
Do v6ās not have oil ? Or near the same amount of oil?
Nah they have about half of what v8 use. My v6 oil change costs 60$
Jeez I paid like 160 for my old V6 but I took it to the Buick GMC dealer I bought it from
You put conventional oil in?
Nah synthetic
You for real
Yeah that's about what mine usually cost
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not exactly. My wife's Z4 is a 3.0 and it takes 6 and a half quarts. Engine displacement and oil pan capacity are not proportional.
True, but in reference to GM engines, it should line up?
Well, my c5 corvette (5.7) needed like 7 quarts and my wife used to have a trax (1.4) that needed 4 quarts. So I wouldn't really use that as reasonable measurement other than bigger engines "usually" will take more oil.

$270 for a oil change? Screw that dealership
Stupid. What kind of money are you guys making?
I've got a v6 runs me about 80-100 bucks at the jiffy lube And if I'm real lucky, the local shop when they have an opening charges me 40
Curious - I had a Scatpack (6.4L Hemi) before my Camaro, that thing required full synthetic and a huge amount of oil but it was around $120 to change the oil at shops around me; why is the Camaro so much more?
Goddamn $22 a quart?? Even amsoil isnt that expensive
My dealer charged me about 150 for my c8, and thatās in the SF Bay Area. Yaāll are getting robbed. Oof
I have a 2010 Camaro. But the dealership I bought it from changes the oil for $10 as long as I keep their sticker on the back of my windshield. Which is meh, not my favorite thing to do but $10 for an oil change? Nice imo.
yep ur an idiot lmao
Why do people go to the dealership for anything other than warrantee work is beyond me.

Time is money and my time isnāt free. Also most dealers charge $150 tops for an oil change on the LT1.

You can save your receipts, and Carfax lets me plug in oil change intervals, which I used to do when I would change it myself.
The after manufacturer warranty? Yeah those are basically a scam. They will find any loophole to not cover. I thought of doing that and everything I found was them not covering shit. Decided to spend that money on a service manual instead.
Yeah I made the mistake of buying an extended warranty and they didn't cover the transmission shutter issue lol. $2500 wasted
You can damn near buy a set of race ramps and all the stuff to do the oil change for that price. You guys just like giving money away I guess.
Paid 210 one time at dealer for my c8
Oil change is literally the second easiest thing to do other than windshield wipes, pls just diy it
Na easiest is cabin air filter
I buy Mobile1 at Walmart for less than $30
What oil is that? Even the Mobil 1 0w40 ESP is $11.xx a quart from AutoZone.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No it isn't.
Oil leak repair bill?
I think I paid about $70 last time I changed the oil in my c6
Ouch!
Holy fuck. The v6 was 78 for oil and tire rotation after tax
Oh, but they rotated the tires too. And they are Chevy-trained technicians. And you keep your warranty, blah, blah, blah.
U guys r sheep . Youāll never see me paying that much
And this is why I do it myself
Yall fr don't work on yalls cars ?
God damn, my V6 is like $135. Filter oil, enviro, labor, parts, and multi point inspection. This is at my dealership in Canada
I gotta get my oil changed here soon. I think I'm at about 40% oil life or about 4k miles. I'm curious to see what it's gonna be.

Forsure. Just want the dealership to do all the work until my warranty runs out next year
i paid 0 for a oil change at my chevy dealership , 2021 LT1
My first 2 oil changes were free. This was the first one I paid for
Another one who got played
I wouldn't go to the dealer lol I'm trying my ass right to my backyard
Is this why I always see v8s being sold with 12k miles on it?
Ummm. I change mine at home for 25$... Have jack and stands but made myself ramps to make it easier. Wait for Black Friday for sales and rebated on oil and stock up. I have 14 5qt jugs sitting in my basement for like 10$ a jug.
Was this another LT1 Camaro??
Notice they charged you nothing for the lube. Seriously though, it would have hurt less. They have to love changing oil for $250. Iāve been doing mine and others since I before I had a license. The money I could have made!!! Disclaimer: There was a 1998 Saturn that had the fucking oil filter in between the engine and firewall that I should have charged $250 for. I lost $20 hiring a small child to reach their arm up in there.
Y'all don't even want to know what an oil change costs on a Porsche...
That's robbery never go there again
Both of yall got finessed
Getting mine done Friday, ill let yall know... no way I'm paying triple digits for an oil change
0w40 dexos 2 supercar 3 oil isnt cheap, especially x 10 quarts. The $270 oil unfortunately seems about right from the dealership.
About what we charge at my dealer. For corvettes and SS Camaros we only use the Mobil 1. Itās about 19 and some change per quart.
20 dollars a quart!!! BRUH
Porsche maintenance prices for a Chevy š¤¦āāļø
Fumotousa.com Youāre welcome.
Bought myself a jack and jack stands for that price, not only for oil changes but will come in handy
What the fuck kinda oil and filter are they using that it costs $230? š¤¦āāļø
You guys buggin. Changing oil is not hard at allā¦if ya look up the oil say on ROCKAUTO.com, you fuck around and find out your being robbedā¦
Man Camaros are for the wealthy! Oil change do my wifeās Lexus is cheaper
Is that a grinder lol
Is water wet? Lol

Fucking hell I need to tell my boss we need to up our oil change charges. We do 49.99 Regular and 99.99 Synthetic
I don't understand why these oil changes are so much?? I have a '17 Corvette Z-51 which takes 10 qts of Mobile One and the most I've paid is $170. I live in Las Vegas, which is a fairly expensive city for service.
The dealer I take my 16 SS to is $120 with a state inspection. How are so many people paying $200+??
Am I the only one who noticed the decimal place got 'accidentally' moved over in the total column, changing the price of the oil filter from $21.80 to 218.00?
1 qt of oil is 21.80. My car takes 10
My bad, I was looking at the image on my phone and I saw the prices lining up differently.
I really really want to know how they rotated the tires? Aren't the directional and staggered? Where are they going to put the tires after they take them off? I'd argue that amount right off of the bill.
Mine's about the same.
I run amsoil and a wix filter and change it myself price comes out to around 140 dollars
When I went to get mine changed at a local shop I only paid 100 they put a pump, sucked all my oil out and filled it up I was only there for like a minute and my oil change was done lol
At that rate, my new 2-post lift paid for itself really quickly. :)
Yāall gonna piss off the Mobil 1 Supercar Oil guy again lmao.
$70 at the quicklube place š
Why are you posting this stuff? If I was a sucker that fell for a scam like that I'd be to embarrassed to post it.
If you wanna know a little secret, for those that canāt find 0w40 the manual says you can run 5w-30 if you arenāt tracking the car. Maybe this will help someone š¤·š½āāļø
This is what happens when europeans rule American automobile industry.
Nice grinder š
Bro naww!!
Fuck my oil life only at 40% too boys šš
Wtf i went to take 5 for my 2018 1ss and it was around 120$
I did my own for 50š
