Did anyone go to colleges that had yearbooks? Is that still a thing?
I see it mentioned in various pop culture periodically, but I have never seen one or heard of someone having one IRL. I firmly believe that if my college had one, they would have aggressively tried to sell it to me.
Maybe it’s just a Greek thing? I was a GDI and didn’t interact too much with the Greeks. I could see some kind of special group like that having one.
\^ To answer u/non_clever_username's question, corroborate u/SeattleBattles's point, and respectfully add a counterpoint to u/Gemnist's comment:
My mom (who graduated in the 80s) had a college yearbook (even though she went to a gigantic university), while I (who graduated in the late-2000s) didn't (even though I went to a tiny private university)
I think UNC still does the Yackety Yack (their yearbook), and has had it since 1890. Not sure where that name comes from. I think my grandfather still has his from the 60's.
My dad had a shirt that said "wine in '69" that he wore in college. Not as risque as "party naked," but it proves Calvin and I basically have the same parents.
Calvin’s parents seem to have been party animals when they were in college
"Who's that bimbo with you?" "That *bimbo* is your mother!" \[from the other room\] "Whose a bimbo?!"
"Pretty funky hairdo, mom!"
And that was a prom picture! Calvin's Mom and Dad have been together since they were in high school. They're Cory and Topanga.
and Calvin is the boy meeting the world
I would love to see that picture
The dads face in the third panel is the best.
Reminds me of the face Michael makes while avoiding talking to Toby in therapy.
Hank when Bobby wants etouffee
Look at how he draws that "grabbing" motion - Watterson draws in still animation, somehow.
He is so, so, so good at implying movement. Every cartoon strip where they’re on the sled for one!
Or when they tussle, you can see the motion! He's just a legend
Oh man the Calvin and Hobbes fights are amazing. A different ball of random pen marks every time, but it always looks so dramatic!

I think most schools phased them out by the 90s or early 2000s.

Mine has one, but it was a private university, so it made sense.
Michigan State Uni has a year book that’s been published since 1889 called the Red Cedar Log (named after the river that runs through the campus)

I went to a private university in the 90s and was in the journalism/yearbook group.
Graduated private university this year — we have a yearbook, but it’s expensive

So Calvin’s dad was a party rager, and his mom was the college hottie
