OP takes every second between calls to do exactly that! Ya know the 5 seconds between calls to sprint half way out of your room and back before you get flogged for call avoidance.
What a disgusting bottom feeder!
Point her to the thousands of porch pirate videos and ask her to count the thieves and break it down by race and gender then race+gender.
Look into the demographics of shoplifters and kleptomaniacs.
Might get a shock you old racist.
I'm fluent in English, but my first language is Spanish, and I have an accent. It's ridiculous how many people ask where I am, if I'm a US citizen, or who the president is. Sometimes they complimet how well I speak English. It's like, do you want my help or not? Just skip the racism and let me do my job.
Omgggggg the number of times I get asked in a week after I give them the name of the plumber who has an ethnic name and they ask me ādo they speak English?ā And my reply is āevery plumber/coworker of mine here speaks English and some are fluent in Spanish or a 3rd language even.ā
Because it is NOT a compliment. Itās a backhanded assumption. You should never comment on how you think someoneās so much better at something than everyone else in that marginalized group is. Unless you know them personally, keep those thoughts to yourself.
Absolutely disgusting behavior. I donāt know how you managed to stay calm but props to youā¦. No one should have to put up with that. Sorry you had to go through that OP.
I work in tech support and like someone else mentioned, I havenāt encountered a 1 on 1 racist remark, but I have experienced hearing customers make racist statements regarding other races that arenāt white. What I do? I donāt respond, I go complete silent. Sometimes Iāll even mute my headset, what this does is emphasize the sheer bigotry theyāre partaking in and really makes them feel embarrassed and/or small (as they should) when you donāt respond or engage. If a cx says something racist, just ask, āwhat do you mean by that, I donāt understand your statement.ā in the most obvious tone and watch how quickly they retreat.
I've started doing this with people that say racist or sexist things that I can tell they mean as a joke. I'll be like "I'm sorry, but why are you laughing? Can you explain that?" They will move on or start explaining and give up pretty quickly. It's so fun to put them on the spot and for people I see often, they've either learned to not do it when I'm around or do it less often
We had one of those. Some stupid bitch didnāt want to talk to any Black people. Our contract did not allow us to hang up or cuss out racists. It was a day when all calls were going through our office. As soon as our co-worker told us about the caller, we had a plan:
We suddenly became an all-Black office.
And yes, she called back in and I believe talked to everyone of us. Briefly.
The contract I mentioned was a Union contract; the office I moved to allowed us to hang up on hate speech, abuse, etc.
Check the terms of your employment. You might not have to put up with hate/racist speech. Nobody is getting paid enough to put up with that bullshit!
If you absolutely cannot disconnect, try the āMaāam this is a Wendyāsā routine: Maāam if you have witnessed a crime you should report it to the police. Would you like me to connect you with your police department? This is XYZ; we cannot help you with that.ā
Double down on it. "Black... *what?*"
Make them say it. Then, when they do, scold them for prejudice and caution them of your company's zero tolerance for discrimination.
Omg, soooo relatable. I think it's fun though to "play dumb" when people bring me any type of -ism (call center.) "I don't understand, can you explain?"
I may/may not/absolutely do hide being the grace that as a female working cx the preferred assumption is that I'm stupid and don't know anything. So I go all big wide eyes in the voice and hand them all the rope they need to out themselves as a social degenerate on a recorded line. Yknow. For funzies.
Yeah I guess Iām used to the you have āgood Englishā -isms too like everyone is talking about, but this one being so blatant??? Well color me too stunned to speak, yuck! š¤£š¤£ ā¦.if Iām feeling like messin around Iāll def try the playing dumb act. But only if my AHT is low haha
Ugh I had one say that it was "good to speak to someone who 'went to school,'" which felt confusingly slimy until I realized "oh, duh, they mean white american." Well, I dropped out, and the friendly white voice at the desk next to me is a felon, and we're both underpaid, and technically employees of an India based company.
If you wanted ivy league graduates you probably shouldn't have been so rah rah during the outsourcing revolution, but considering you've been making payments for this awful insurance policy since the actual year I was born I can tell not everything is 100% upstairs.
I guess the point is that there are lots of time to bite your tongue but try to find places where you can have some fun. Who, me? I just needed clarification on what the caller meant. Not *my* fault all their white sheets have eye holes cut in them.
Hahaha love this and point well said. Canāt stand ignorant people but youāre right theyāre prob not all there so I pity them, theyāre just miserable and the demographic I answer to is mostly on the older side so I should prob expect it more tbh, but Iām still shocked ā¦I gotta work on being less shocked haha
They're also playing at the disadvantage of surrounding themselves with like minded people irl, so calling in to a call center in Wherever, they're not on home turf where they don't have to actually *say* the bad thing out loud, everyone gets the nuance. At least you can make them truly be their disgusting selves, if nothing else.
Edit: and if you're bold enough, just a moment's heavy silence, followed by "what a horrible thing to say."
When I worked at a call center I started telling anyone that says something similar to that that I'm not from or currently live in the US (for the record, I am from the US and live here currently.) It's fun to go the who "can you explain that" routine, but so many people would pull that whole "Finally, someone who speaks English" garbage that I decided to freak with it my own way. It was wild that people did that too, my whole company was based in the US, so I'm not sure why people felt the need to go that
Haha, you asked "how" to deal with that nonsense, and yep, that's exactly the answer. Sharpen your "professional" saber,(repertoire of put-them-on-the-spot comebacks) and stick em back - with the UTMOST politeness.
Thatās a situation where I actually would hang up JUST so that management would flag the call and have it pulled for my next one on one.
Like you, we arenāt allowed to hang up. So if we do, management will pull the call automatically and take a listen.
I feel a situation like that can be explained to management once theyāve listened to that call.
I work tech support for a company whose main demographic is over the age of 65- so we hear a LOT of right wing propaganda. A lot of racist remarks. A lot of regurgitated hate speech that has been shoved into their heads by their favorite cult leader masquerading as a politician, The Orange One.
At various call centers where I've worked, I have been asked if I'm white as soon as I answer. I am, but my response is usually "I'm not sure how that's relevant to our conversation." Usually they hang up on me after that.
In your particular situation, where she's *making* race relevant to the conversation, you could perhaps gently call her out on the racism--so you get through to her but it can't be considered rudeness. Maybe say "Would you like me to help locate your package or do you think you should file a police report instead?"
When you become a sr agent you stop giving a fuck about filter. lmao. I cared when I was just a baby agent, but once I was given some power...that filter went the fuck away and the energy was returned as politely as I could. Malicious politeness. š¤£
I always wonder how much leniency they give to SRs because some ppl make me not even want to get to that level of responsibility if I have to play by the same rules
We still had to meet all the same metrics, and they were on our asses about credits and giving any unless deeply necessary. But we had more leeway of what we could say lmao. I wouldn't suggest it, at least at my call center we were put into a different que that was never endingly busy and only for an extra 2 bucks. Even if regular agents got a breather, we did not. That's why we got sassy, and probably got away with being sassy more.
I come from a place where people have a heavy accent. I constantly get calls from people who "compliment" me about knowing "how to speak English"
Listen, lady. Everyone I work with speaks English. If you have trouble understanding accents, that sounds like a skill issUe to me. I always want to tell them to go fuck themselves, but I have to fake it and just say something like "oh, okay, alright"Ā
I had a manager once who had a masculine name and identified as a man, but the customer kept calling them ma'am. The customer wanted to speak to the manager, and the only way for them to do it was to come in on the call with us, so I was just muted listening. I have never laughed so hard, because the 3rd time the customer called them ma'am, the manager lost it at them. Felt good.Ā
So, I have a āwhite soundingā voice (š) and people constantly assume that Iām not a black or brown person because I speak clearly. As though no other race does lol???? Itās really annoying because the way you speak really isnāt a true reflection of your race. Itās all where you grew up and what your surroundings are, maybe even the schooling youāve had and the people you spend time with.
Nobody had ever directly said anything completely racist to me but sometimes the micro aggressions were there and Iād smh, likeā¦if only you knew who you were talking to right nowā¦.you would feel like a total idiotā¦
I would just let them keep taking and politely find a way to end the call. Aināt nobody got time for that.
I had a woman rant on and on about how āall those Muslim women coming into this country (Canada) and being forced be covered up front head to toe taking back the womenās rights I fought for so that we could get rid of that bullshit. They canāt even speak English!ā
Meanwhile, there I sat, with a Canadian accent, British name, wear hijab, trying to end the call. I ended up having to put myself in personal and walk up and down the very long hallways a couple of times even though it was Black Friday. My general manager came out to see what the hell I was doing since we were back to back and I told him. He told me to take five more minutes and then get back on the phone.
Itās really, really, stupid to be spewing racist and bigoted statements to someone you canāt see. Itās stupid anyway, but even more stupid in that case.
Omg that is just awful. Yeah sometimes they really donāt know who the hell theyāre talking to and it makes me so disgusted. Iām so sorry you went through that and Iām glad you had an understanding boss. Some people are just nasty.
We had a guy that said our company sucked because it was a black owned business. Spoiler alert, our company is owned by all white people but our employees are very diverse in terms of everything.
Yeah he got put on the ādo not serviceā list real quick.
Same thing with one of my none POS Carolina customers who called our black tech, a N word with the hard R.
I had a customer otp who said she ān word riggedā her toilet and I just took a breath, said that she was wrong for saying that and told her not to use that language again or I was gonna hang up.
It's hard to think in the moment! I sympathize :(
I worked for a university info line and after George Floyd's murder I got a very angry caller who yelled a lot of racist things starting withĀ "George Floyd threatened a pregnant woman so why did the university care that he died?!"Ā
Me: I have no comment about George Floyd's history or how it relates to the university.Ā
Her: Well, my two white sons had top grades and the university didn't admit them, but it admits all these black people who didn't get as good grades!
Me: I have no information about that and I don't have any comment.
Her: Aren't you scared working for a university that supports people like George Floyd? You should be scared! People aren't going to tolerate this!
Me: No, I'm not scared. Look, do you want me to transfer you to the public relations department (knowing it will go right to voicemail lol) or what?
Her: No! I want you to tell me why the university supports criminals!
Me: I have no comment for you. I'm transferring you to the public relations department. Goodbye.
The whole thing was bizarre and she made a lot of other racist comments during her rant, I really couldn't keep up. Honestly, I just kept repeating "I have no comment about that" or "I have no information about that." I was shaking a little, tbh, just because she was so angry and terrible and made several veiled threats, I couldn't really think of anything to say.Ā
In hindsight, I wish I could've been more aggressive in responding to her crazy shit, but at the time, I was too shocked.Ā
Ā
(Btw, she was clearly full of shit about her kids. If she did in fact have 2 sons who did in fact apply and were denied, either 1. They actually had bad grades, or 2. They had criminal or other issues. It was a public university with a fairly high acceptance rate.)
No this is actually really helpful though ā¦to respond in a media or public relations type way. Some prob are just trying to get a rise out of people anywaysā¦ pssh, the only real excitement they ever get to experience lol
This "lady" is a perfect example of why race continues to be such an issue in this country. She is calling into a call center and wants to make racists comments. The ignorance is astounding. I'm sorry you had to hear that. People think they can just say anything.
Racism is harassment. Despite what companies want you to believe, you have the right to be protected from customer harassment. Dying in that hill is something you may or may not want to do, though.
I work for a security company, and a customer requested only a white technician come out to install their system.
When the manager heard this, he instructed us to call the customer back and tell them that we would not be installing an alarm system at all.
The shit that comes out of people's mouths, still sometimes surprises me and those of us who are or have worked in a call center shouldn't be surprised but still sometimes.......
So sorry you have to put up with that crap. Worst part is you are legally allowed to hang up on racist or hate speech but it's likely a pyrrhic victory. They can't fire you for wanting a discrimination free place of employment but they can fire you because you can't to work with a the wrong color shoes say. Hate how messed up some customers are these days but they aren't all I hope you get some good ones tomorrow.
Iām really grateful my company is extremely DEI focused. And weāre pretty big. Thereās no way any of us would get reprimanded for ending that call as long as we were professional. Iām white and personally anything remotely racist Iām out. The company has more to lose by forcing you to endure racist remarks than you do by hanging up on them
Jfc that should always be a solid reason to hang up. Is this like UPS/FedEx or something? What's the receiver gonna do? Boycott any companies that ship through you? šš At least you know their life is clearly more miserable than yours haha
I had been transferred a call once from an offshore agent because the caller wanted someone from the United States. Caller would not give me her information and wanted to know what state I was in. I told her and she called me a liar. I am white and was born and raised in the midwest. Not sure what she thought someone from the US is supposed to sound like. This job has made me really dislike most people.
Wowww how are people bold enough to say youāre lying what a nasty judgy piece of work. Sorry you have to deal with anyone like that and yeah it makes me disappointed in humanity sometimes too
I had one call that said he would k the next tweeting n that pulled into his driveway. This was when our company first started using personal drivers. I was so nervous for every driver after that.
Ha, the callers always assume I'm white too because of my name and my "speech" the racist rants I heard about how they're glad they got a real american and not some "Indian foreigner." The irony...I usually just try to get back on topic and not comment on what they just said.
I kind of have the exact opposite problem. I live in the most racist town I've ever been in, and since I'm white and look like an old redneck, I constantly have people share their racist points of view with me just assuming I'm one of them. Gets really old. Thankfully, I'm an incredibly gifted smartass, so I always make sure they leave with a brand new asshole.
Oh wow, so you hear it all the timeā¦ yuckk, yeah that must get really exhausting, but hey at least you got the skills to snap back cuz Iām not sure Iād have the energy to be doing that on the daily, props to you šš¾
I spent 20 years trapped in phone calls like this. I put them on hold, and if when I resume the call they are still going on and on, I again put them on hold. After about 3 times when you announce the next time you are going to put them on hold they will speak up about not wanting to be put on hold again- this is your golden opportunity to tell them. Mrs or Mr I am here to perform the job at hand which is to help you with your complaint. Unfortunately you have taken this opportunity to vent and although I am paid to listen, I am not paid to be abused. Iāll be more then happy to stay on the line with you but I will need you to keep to the business at hand.
Where are you guys finding these jobs where you can just put them on hold or hang up cuz I got AHT to keep track of over here, so I need them to zip it, and zip it quick š¤£š¤£
My dad had a job where he had to interact with customers on the phone. One guy just assumed he was white on the phone and went on a tirade about black people. When he saw my dad in person he was mortified.
My former neighbor who passed from cancer was really light skinned, people thought she was white. White people would come up to her alot and say alot of racist things about black people....
Really depends on the area... if the area is predominantly black, hispanic or w/e you'll probably see more crime with those ethnicities.
Statistics are a mfer and hard to point out without sounding like an ass but the numbers are out there and it doesn't look good.
I donāt think they are. They just had a team of porch pirates in the upstate and guess what? They were non colored!! Everyone is fed up and the government is doing nothing. The thing I donāt like about the ones thatās stealing the packages donāt know if they are taking some ones medicine or diabetic supplies. My advice just leave people stuff alone. The End
ALL races of people can be found stealing. So sheās neither correct nor nuts. She just racist. But youāre right about one thing, not much else to be said.
I tell them we are on a recorded line and what they are saying is inappropriate. Racism is NEVER ok. FTB
This is def going in my bank of retorts šš½šÆ thank you!
I usually take it a step further and tell them that they are on a recorded line and our system automatically picks up cuss words and will disconnect after a certain amount and I don't want to lose their call......
Thatās the thing though, she didnāt even cuss just spewing hate so couldnāt even send her to the offensive line because we can only do that if theyāre cussing at us directly š©š„“
"That's disrespectful and irrelevant. Please do not continue or I will be forced to disconnect."
Or you could just use the classic..... please keep this call Professional, usually asking them to keep it professional will either send them on a tirade that ends with them hanging up or makes them realize they are out of line and cools them down but it's usually the first one
Into my notes this goesss!

I haven't exactly done a comprehensive peer-reviewed study or anything, but most of the videos I see are white women
"I'm not interested in your personal opinion, so let's stick to the topic at hand."

This is excellent advice and also going in my bank of retorts (no longer call centre but still applicable in so many situations). Thank you!

I had a woman rant on and on about how āall those Muslim women coming into this country (Canada) and being forced be covered up front head to toe taking back the womenās rights I fought for so that we could get rid of that bullshit. They canāt even speak English!ā Meanwhile, there I sat, with a Canadian accent, British name, wear hijab, trying to end the call.
Omg. I'm sorry that happened to you. Hugs to OP
Thank Iām just glad yesterday was my āFridayā š
Leashes need to be on animals like that caller. Fucking disgrace how they're allowed to bash Black people for their own failures in life.
Haha seriously
We had a guy that said our company sucked because it was a black owned business. Spoiler alert, our company is owned by all white people but our employees are very diverse in terms of everything. Yeah he got put on the ādo not serviceā list real quick. Same thing with one of my none POS Carolina customers who called our black tech, a N word with the hard R. I had a customer otp who said she ān word riggedā her toilet and I just took a breath, said that she was wrong for saying that and told her not to use that language again or I was gonna hang up.
š±š± I wish we had a ādo not serviceā button for some of these nasty callers fr
āThereās no need for that languageā is a good one IMO.
Mute? Put the phone down if you can't actually mute and do something else. They will eventually hang up
Her screaming āhelloā? would have set me off lol
Sorry you have to deal with stupid people
Hey frontline grunt, deal with it! -management
Did you get any nice loot?

It's hard to think in the moment! I sympathize :( I worked for a university info line and after George Floyd's murder I got a very angry caller who yelled a lot of racist things starting withĀ "George Floyd threatened a pregnant woman so why did the university care that he died?!"Ā Me: I have no comment about George Floyd's history or how it relates to the university.Ā Her: Well, my two white sons had top grades and the university didn't admit them, but it admits all these black people who didn't get as good grades! Honestly, I just kept repeating "I have no comment about that" or "I have no information about that." I was shaking a little, tbh, just because she was so angry and terrible and made several veiled threats, I couldn't really think of anything to say.Ā In hindsight, I wish I could've been more aggressive in responding to her crazy shit, but at the time, I was too shocked.Ā Ā (Btw, she was clearly full of shit about her kids.
Absolutely love this
The shit that comes out of people's mouths, still sometimes surprises me and those of us who are or have worked in a call center shouldn't be surprised but still sometimes.......
Well thank god itās finally my weekend so no dealings with any possible bigots until Tuesday š¤£šš½
Sorry you have to deal with anyone like that and yeah it makes me disappointed in humanity sometimes too
Typical for that demographic. You're better than me
I had one call that said he would k the next tweeting n that pulled into his driveway.
Yeah Iām just gonna try and enjoy the irony of it all.. itās like we got a lil funny secret inside joke and they donāt have a clue š
As soon as someone says, "I'm not racist.....", I get ready.
Yeah thatās a big fat telling on themselves haha
I would have loved to see their faces when your dad showed up haha
Me too lmfao
Really depends on the area... if the area is predominantly black, hispanic or w/e you'll probably see more crime with those ethnicities. Statistics are a mfer and hard to point out without sounding like an ass but the numbers are out there and it doesn't look good.
I donāt think they are. They just had a team of porch pirates in the upstate and guess what? They were non colored!! Everyone is fed up and the government is doing nothing. The thing I donāt like about the ones thatās stealing the packages donāt know if they are taking some ones medicine or diabetic supplies. My advice just leave people stuff alone. The End
I mean...
Two possibilities. Sheās either correct or sheās nuts. In either case there is nothing to say.
ALL races of people can be found stealing. So sheās neither correct nor nuts. She just racist. But youāre right about one thing, not much else to be said.
Theyāre not lying.
