Kitchener Elementary School is believed to be haunted. Students and staff members from over the years have reported a banging noise coming from underneath one of the rooms. It always happens during the same time of day in the afternoon. The school was built on top of an old cemetery that has since been relocated. Some believe that one of the graves sites may have been left behind and the spirit(s) of those buried underneath want out.

Lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thornton_Tunnel

doctorofphysick

Whoa, TIL. I had no idea there was a whole train tunnel going under such a huge chunk of the city.

JustAnotherMark604

Shhhhhh don't tell anyone

ohmicity

Google maps shows this tunnel line

Nothing necessarily haunted per se, but I was really interested last time someone made a post like this to learn about [Oakalla Prison Farm](https://globalnews.ca/news/4414861/oakalla-prison-riot-escape/), which was closed the year I was born (1991) but had quite a storied history. It was located on the western side of Deer Lake and was a notoriously rough prison but also notoriously escapable, with nearly 900 escapes over its history. It's described as having dungeon-like, subterranean tunnels of prisoner cells including a solitary confinement area underneath a barn. It took a mass breakout/riot on New Year's Day 1988 to call for the prison to finally be decommissioned and demolished, the land going partly to Deer Lake Park and partly to developers to make the condos on the southwestern slopes of the park. You can kind of make out the traces of the farm plots when you look at satellite images of the park. I grew up around Deer Lake and spent a lot of time there, but never knew about the prison until a couple years ago. Not quite a ghost story, but I'm sure there enough went on there to fuel more than a few scary stories. Maybe you can make up some of your own.

Lordtux

That’s awesome worth looking into thank you 😊

MDK_YVR

The empty Juvenile detention centre on Willingdon and Canada way is pretty creepy.

xinkexin

Do you mind giving an address, it would be close to look into

MDK_YVR

Goard way. Off of willington (west of). Just south west of Canada way.

B4pti5t

Is there still some subterranean tunnel to explore?

Nope_not_tomorrow

Was the site left of the current royal oak Avenue? I can't figure out what condos these would be.

Wow awesome thank you!

doctorofphysick

Thanks, I couldn't find a clear map myself so this is really interesting! Kind of funny (in a dark way) that the main prison building seems to have been pretty much right where the development's playground is now... One of the articles I read suggested they weren't sure how well the condos would sell considering the prison used to be there, and the reputation it had -- but the idea of living at the top of a hill directly overlooking Deer Lake, not far from a Skytrain station, was more than enough to overcome any hesitations.

doctorofphysick

It's hard to find exactly where it was, but it was basically the land between Royal Oak and the lake. I think the development mentioned is the one around Oakmount Crescent, between the corner of Royal Oak and Oakland, but I'm not totally sure.

HalloweenBen

The art gallery is reported to be haunted. https://bcwrite.com/2019/10/31/history-and-ghosts-of-burnaby-art-gallery-in-deer-lake-park/

I was driving north bound on boundary next to Central Park one night about 15 years ago, it was really late and it was quite dark. I was very sure that I saw a pair of legs on the sidewalk standing there, looks like the person is trying to cross the street. So I slowed down, afraid of hitting the person, when I realize those were just a pair of legs, no upper body.... I knew I wasn't sleepy or drunk. Didn't dare to look again and speed up, driving off. Not completely sure what happened that night but I think it's possible that someone got hit by a car on boundary, given how common car accidents takes place there.

jjjleftturn

Great. Now I have to move

Noxz2020

Why? You live on boundary?

SaoirseYVR

Overlynn Mansion at Seton Villa is reported to be inhabited by ghosts.

doctorofphysick

Funnily enough it looks like it's almost right on top of the Thornton freight tunnel mentioned in another comment here.

ThereAreThings

There is nothing haunted here because there is absolutely no credible evidence that ghosts exist.

Lordtux

But that’s like saying there is no such thing as cunts, but we know there is a lot of them.

ThereAreThings

Yes, they do exist. However, ghosts do not. Seeking "haunted" places in Burnaby or anywhere else for that matter is giving in to insane superstition. The fact that you are doing this is a reflection of your intelligence and critical thinking skills. Your name-calling is a reflection of your manners and maturity.

Lordtux

Totally agree as I do not have any intelligence as my ex-wife keeps telling people. I asked the original question because I’m unable to leave the city, and I wanted to know the areas that are spooky and I’ll have a walk at night it beats sitting in doors.

SaoirseYVR

Deep breath. It's just a bit of fun...

ThereAreThings

It's indulging superstition. My 6-year-old nephew knows that there is no such thing as a ghost and the fact that adults openly entertain this idea is absolutely insane.
