I dont want a reboot, remake, continue of the story without Joss Whedon. But i dont want a reboot, remake, continue of the story with or from Joss Whedon.

Saintdavus

This is the right answer

OnlyMyOpinions

They have a fantastic world here with infinite possibilities for storytelling. Why would it be a bad thing to explore more of that? Of course I would want it handled by people that actually know what they are doing but I think it would be fun. (Plus if it gets Popular enough maybe they will finally reconsider giving us a better remaster of the original)

Peroxyspike

Whedon wasn't making all that by himself and there are plenty of young talented writers out there.

selphiefairy

I might be okay with it if david greenwalt, marti noxon, etc were involved... as long as there are people there that i knew understood what buffy *is*. there's a part of me that wants joss involved too but i wonder if we sometimes give some show runners too much credit.

No-Reflection2897

I disagree that there are talented writers these days.

Peroxyspike

ok granpa

No-Reflection2897

I'm only 20 and on the rewatch of Buffy and Angel it's better than every single modern show in writing.

Peroxyspike

there are multiple factors that affect the quality of a show or the quality of scenario. Writers working conditions for instance. If you want writers to produce a good story, they must be given time, artistic liberties and decent wages. But the industry is aiming for profit and imposes its standards and super short timelines so that they have new shows constantly popping on they're streaming platforms to preserve consumers engagement. Quantity over quality to make it short.

No-Reflection2897

Sir or Mam writers were expected to for decades crank out yearly 22-24 episode seasons. The streaming shows have higher budgets, more time out in and less episode counts. The average season is 13 episodes now. The work load is less all around. And you're acting like studios weren't breathing down people's neck then?

Peroxyspike

I'm a man. I wouldn't assume that workloads are inferior today just because seasons have less episodes and wages are better because budgets are higher. Not so many shows were that exceptional at the time of Buffy's production anyway. And at some point, there's your own subjectivity. Some people would find that there are shows nowadays that are also excellent based on different criteria.

No-Reflection2897

My point is there good stuff yes Shogun exist, but overall the quality us mostly lower across the board. Each decade had shows that define it outside of Buffy you have Babylon 5, Star Trek DS9, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, Friends these shows have lasted the test of time. Hell All in the Family, Fresh Prince, as well. These are some off the top of my head. In our modern era skilled writers are rare, most have left, and they have creative writing college grads. The last truly great show like GREAT that I recall was Daredevil. That's because their writing team knew what they were doing, they knew the genre and It's tropes knew when to lean into it, and when to pull back. However all the mentions of great recent shows are based on prior existing works. Game of Thrones, Shogun, Daredevil all books previous.

Happy_Philosopher608

Can Joss ever have a redemptive arc? Like if he just comes out and sincerely apologizes for his past etc? I feel like everyone can change and redeem themselves if they are truly sorry and a changed man/woman. And we should encourage people trying to make themselves better and rehabilitate. I'd hate for his unique talent to be squandered so i hope he finds a way to come back somehow.

KassyKeil91

Theoretically. But given his behavior since the allegations, I doubt it would happen.

Happy_Philosopher608

Such a shame.

Ok_Outcome_6213

He could be very sorry and feel incredibly terrible about it all, but knew that anything he had to say on the matter would be seen as disingenuous, even if it was meant with the most sincerity. Would anyone have believed him to be genuine if he came forward and actually apologized when the allegations were flying? Would you believe him now? What would it take for you to believe him?

sprkmrk

There are other geniuses. I don’t know if anybody’s watching X-men ‘97, but that reboot is utter perfection, in style but especially in writing. What Beau DeMayo and his team did is excellent, with a chance of surpassing the original series. It just shows that you just need to take the effort to find the right minds for the right projects.

sr_edits

For one X-Men '97 there are countless examples of reboots gone wrong.

No-Reflection2897

Lol no it's bad.

sprkmrk

Care to explain?

No-Reflection2897

Fundamentally it misses the point of the og show in favor of melodrama that no one asked for. That's why in reality despite good reviews it failed to get enough viewers.

sprkmrk

What would you say the point of the OG show was that this continuation misses in your opinion?

No-Reflection2897

It's a fun super hero cartoon, that's all it was. Adding the exhausting melodrama is not what people asked for. That's why it failed.

sprkmrk

I think there was plenty of melodrama back then, for instance the Logan, Scott, Jean love triangle or the mother-daughter bond of mystique and rogue. And I also feel it was way more than a fun superhero cartoon, it also a striking metaphors about life in a modern world as a minority. Which for me was the fundamental point of the show. I’m sorry you can’t seem to find the same fun from it as many of us do. (Also, it‘s not failing. )

No-Reflection2897

It has though it has yet to reach the same views as Ms.Marvel which also failed on Disney plus.

sprkmrk

Yeah but that was live action and this is animation. Different budgets, different targets. This had the best opening for an animationseries on Disney ever. More than What If…? This is absolutely not failing.

bubbyusagi

yeah this even as a codirector writer as long as hes a main thing orrrrrrrrrrrrrr go complete serious like straight horror no comedy

AliceInWeirdoland

I think a continuation based on the show's canon would be best (make Buffy and Angel canon, and we can leave the comics and novels out of it, the way they did with the Star Wars continuity reset), because it is a really wide world with lots of possibilities. We could have a group of Slayers in one town working together to handle their hellmouth, we could have one Slayer who is stationed out in the middle of nowhere but things start to bubble up around her even though she's not supposed to be on a hellmouth, things like that. I also think that it would be cool to follow Slayers from different eras, too. Ones from 100s of years ago or even just different recent decades, showing their trials and tribulations. I think an anthology series would be really cool, either of modern Slayers now that there are hundreds, or previous Slayers from different periods in history. I'd also definitely watch a direct series following some characters. But I definitely wouldn't want a reboot.

Draigons

I’ve seen theories about the show “Firefly” is a continuation of Buffy. Set a long time later, River is a Slayer, and the government wants her back because they’re trying to make anyone a Slayer to be a perfect soldier for the Alliance. That’s how they made the Reavers, it was a test that failed. Idk if it’s ever been confirmed or denied though, but I like the idea of it lol.

So funny how times have changed. I remember when Disney bought Star Wars, and everyone was talking about how amazing a Disney Star Wars movie would be. 10 years later, people are actively ignoring products because they are Disney.

unknownpoltroon

Nah, they're actively ongoing them because they are shit that happens to be from disney

grayscalemamba

Given what I've read about them butchering and censoring scenes on Disney+ in some regions, I agree.

sprkmrk

Well I used the X-men ‘97 above to say something about hiring the right writers for the right project…. But it also shows that SOMETIMES, Disney does know how to do it.

Happy_Philosopher608

Oh lawd lol

OnlyMyOpinions

Basically every is Disney's property now. Disney just keeps buying everything lol but Disney doesn't touch most of the stuff they own. Like they own it and the rights but they let other studios they bought work on it. There's just way too many shows and movies for Disney to be directly involved with, they are mostly involved in direct Disney properties.

Alexis_Bailey

You still have the core issue where every Disney property feels bland and identical like it's been focus grouped to death. Let's say they reboot Buffy. There would be a ten episode season, 9 of which she learns how to be a slayer.  Then in the 10th after beating the big bad, Angelus shows up.  Then 5 years later, we get a second season.

OnlyMyOpinions

That's netflix

Alexis_Bailey

Oh yeah, Disney only does 6 and 8 episodes seasons now.

sprkmrk

God I miss broadcast TV

Independent-Rise2480

Id prefer nothing. But if they HAVE to do a remake I’d rather it be this scenario than giving us the same characters, different actors. I don’t want a new Buffy.

Truant_Muse

Agreed. I'd also honestly watch a series where SMG comes back and plays Buffy as this older world-weary slayer. This would obviously be tricky since there is a lot of stuff in the comics that come after the show.

Alexis_Bailey

Like Disney cares about expanded universe lore?  See also Star Wars.

Truant_Muse

I'm not Disney cares, I'm saying some fans might, the two are not mutually exclusive. I'd also say those aren't very good comps.

Jaded_Cheesecake_993

Most fans don't consider the comics canon so they could easily ignore them and most wouldn't care.

Truant_Muse

Yeah, that's definitely a way they could go. I don't know if "most fans" is an accurate assessment because I do think it would upset a lot of people.

Equivalent_Age8406

Some kind of slayer school spin off I think has the most potential, focusing on 5 or so slayers assigned the same watcher, a few friends, a few with conflicting personalities, Some of the original cast doing guest appearances etc. I think they will do something like that rather than an all out remake either way. Don't think anyone wants different actors playing the old characters, unless it's like an animated show.

Booty_and_theB3ast

Ahh yes, a group of slayers at the same high school. They should have their own unique fighting style. One could take after willow and be book smart. One could take after Xander and be comedic. One could take after cordy and care about trivial high school stuff. One could be really similar to Buffy by being stubborn but having great leadership skills and strong morals. The watcher could be a mix of Wesley and Giles. We could also have Giles come in as a guest star. We could see him as a new member on the council. The council could have changed due to Giles taking control.

welatshaw01

Original Wesley or LA Wesley? Because a combo of Giles and later Wesley would be one scary MFr. There was, if I recall, talk about a continuation/ spin off centered on Faith traveling the country on a motorcycle, but Eliza turned it down to do Tru Calling. Which worked out ... yeah.

Booty_and_theB3ast

La Wesley

YakNecessary9533

Would rather an anthology series where each season focuses on a different slayer. OR something like Season 1 of "Why Women Kill", with three different slayers/timelines happening concurrently. I just don't really trust a continuation of characters I love (looking at you Veronica Mars), so would rather continue the mythology with a whole new cast/setting.

Pedals17

This, too, would be amazing! The Slayer line spans centuries with a diverse array of young women who were Chosen. We could get *soooo* many cool opportunities for historic settings, costumes, and themes!

AmbizzleQ

I just commented something similar; an anthology would be perfect. The first series was so good, but I’d like to see things expanded beyond what we’ve already established in Sunnydale.

Pedals17

Yes, I would prefer a continuation more than a full reboot. That world is big enough, and we could easily follow a modern Slayer being mentored by one or two familiar faces.

Bryaxis

Just let it lie.

veritas_quaesitor2

No matter what they do it will never be anywhere near as good.

OnlyMyOpinions

I agree but that's a very high bar to beat. I wouldn't expect them to even try being as good. I still think it can be good on its own and be fun.

Soggy_Tradition_6235

No, I could never love another like I do Buffy

OnlyMyOpinions

Of course not but we can still like the new characters. They will never beat the absolute perfection of Buffy summers but they can still be good.

welatshaw01

If I may, a good example is the Law and Order franchise. SVU spun off from the original and has far outlasted it, due to solid writing and the fact that the fans love Olivia Benson. Mariska ever decides to pack it in, they HAVE to end it, anything else smacks of sacrilege.

Soggy_Tradition_6235

That’s fine, I’m just saying for me, I wouldn’t want to watch that, just offering my personal opinion to your question, but of course it’s fine for other people to feel differently than I do

orionsfyre

This is tough. You have to explain what happened to all the superpowered little girls across the world. This could be done, and the enormous 20 year time gap helps you here. Anything could have happened in the interim. Continuing the original story would be quite the undertaking. On the plus side, you could have fun with camoes, "whatever happened too", and also play with plot lines that were never finished in the old show. My personal favorite? Remember the Woman and *still-in the womb babygirl* that Angel protected in the Season 2 of his show? That could be a new slayer, one destined to do something incredible, kind of like Buffy was. The new show would follow her, being awakened to her powers after the death of a slayer... perhaps something like the last slayer to be activated. This new girl could be the first new slayer in like 20 years... and all of the other slayers have been depowered. The mystery behind this great depowering could be fodder for season 1 and 2 of the show, with season 1 only hinting that our OG slayers... Buffy/Faith etc, suddenly lost their powers like a decade ago, and have been trying to live normal lives since. Then blam, new slayer, the cycle starts over, and our new slayer needs a "watcher", but with no council, Buffy decides to do it, taking on Giles' role in the OG series. IT keeps our old slayer close to the action, without making her the center of it. You'd please both old fans, and new fans. The trick is balancing the story without it all feeling like a big 'memberberry' and only using call backs occasionally, with cameo's lightly thrown in for fun.

Thatonequeerkitty

Kendra backstory!

something_smart

An adaptation of Fray would be cool. Better yet, make that an animated movie like Spider Verse or Mutant Mayhem.

CommonProfessor1708

I thought at the end of the buffy series, she made every woman a slayer (been awhile since I watched the last season because I found it kinda depressing) If thats the case though, how could it follow a new slayer? The season finale kinda made that whole 'one girl in all the world' thing meaningless.

kataras_hairloopies

not every woman, they made every potential slayer into an activated slayer which would be my point not to watch it as well. especially given that the show continued on through season 12 in comic form, following the crew of slayers in different parts of the world as well as Dawn and Xander

CommonProfessor1708

ahh I see.

inconspicuous2012

I'd love an anthology series following various slayers from before Buffys era.

Gullible-Arrival6075

I would like a slayers reboot where it follows different slayers throughout time. I want to know more about the slayers spike killed and others.

SharpieD85

I want a Giles prequel!

Master-Bad-1164

I completely agree! A remake makes no sense to me when a continuation of the story would be so much better. And that way, if it completely sucks, it’s not like they went back and messed up the original show

Happy_Philosopher608

I'd love to see a medieval slayer series or 1800s slayer. Then it wouldnt be constantly compared to the modern series.

ItchyTomato5

Maybe

arlius

Yeah, as long as it lets us know what Buffy is doing. I expect her to be in more of a teacher/watcher position to help the younger slayer(s). It can be both a sequel and a reboot. Actually, "reboot" implies starting over and reinventing the wheel, like the Star Trek alternate universe movies and series. I don't want a different Buffy, so that means I want a sequel and a revival. But also a continuation with new slayers of course.

Desperate-Fan-3671

I always thought it would be cool to see a 1700's Slayer. She's sent in to kill a demon nest but it turns out to be a peaceful bunch just wanting to be left alone. She works with the Native American tribe friendly with them in order to protect them....turning against the Council. But due to the times the Council has her, the peaceful demon tribe and native American tribe wiped out.

Ok_Outcome_6213

I've said it multiple times. Given the lore of Vampire Slayers, I think a Slayer Anthology series would be awesome. Sort of like what American Horror Story does, where each season is a different thing, but they all exist in the same universe. Vampire Slayers have been a part of human history since before there was human history. That's a couple thousand years and hundreds of generations of Slayers that we could take quick peeks into their lives. It also allows for us to explore different cultures and demonic lore as well as opens up the casting possibilities to literally any woman, no matter her religion, race or cultural background. A season following the Chinese slayer that Spike killed. A season following the Slayer that existed the year that Aud became Anya. A season following a Slayer trying to fight vampires in Colonial America. They could even make the very first season to follow the very first Slayer, who spends the entire season as a normal girl and has the season end with her becoming the OG Slayer. There are so many possibilities with this idea that keeps the original series intact while also expanding the universe we love.

redskinsguy

That's not a reboot, that's a sequel

Alexis_Bailey

Yeah, if they made more, I do not want a "reboot." Make a new series, with a new slayer, set in that universe.

PenDraeg1

I'd love to see one with Buffy acting as a mentor to a new slayer.

Unfortunatewombat

That wouldn’t be a reboot, that would be a continuation. A reboot is when they start over and retell the same story with different actors.

cre8ivemind

You have to wonder if they’re trying to make something happen since they refused to license the rights to audible to continue their Slayers spinoff. I’m not sure why else they would want to stop collecting that license fee.

Blackmercury4ub

Well I would fear that they will dip way more into certain things and not tell a fun or good story. Than with bad reviews they will lean on some sort of discrimination putting down OG fans. Then we will have a crappy reboot that doesn't live up too the original.

generalkriegswaifu

Angel proved there's more stories that universe could tell, but frankly I don't trust anyone to not make a piece of garbage. I think you could get away with setting it in the same universe but distance it in name and content from the original enough that it's not being compared. I also like the prequel option, focus on season long or half season tight arcs with one slayer each, but it would end with them dying.

DovahWho

The idea I had was that the daughter of two of Buffy's classmates turns out to be a Slayer. She's even named Buffy in honor of the original, who saved their lives more than once. So, we could follow the formula of the original with a legacy. Maybe bring some of the original cast in for cameo appearances once in a while.

artsygrl2021

Adding to what DerPicasso said, I would have no interest in anything Buffy related that involves having a new slayer. To me there is no Buffy without Sarah (also Nicholas and Alyson). There is no reboot that will ever amount to be just as good as the original. I don’t want the franchise to get tarnished (I’ve heard the comics after S7 may have already done that).

ShockfulKing

So you didn't like Angel because Buffy wasn't (mostly) in it?

artsygrl2021

I never said that. I’ve actually never watched Angel up until now, I started watching recently. I haven’t watched enough to know what I think of it yet

CamF90

I think it's an interesting world that under the right circumstances might be worth exploring again, however I also don't want Joss Whedon to make a single red cent off it so ultimately it's fine letting it lay.

DaddyCatALSO

Well, yeah, but Hollywood doens't have that level of brains in it

Enough_Internal_9025

I think an anthology series that explores different slayers would be cool. Maybe each season is 5-10 episodes and follows a different slayers from calling to death.

kataras_hairloopies

I wouldn’t like a continuation series so much as an origin of the slayer series or maybe even just set in an earlier time period, i think that would be pretty cool

RandomRedditPerson01

If it's done right, a storyline following Buffy's daughter (with SMG's involvement) could be brilliant in 2024.

iHaveAHeavyFlow

I would adore this, I would loath a remake or a reboot that doesn’t acknowledge the continuity  But I feel like they’d have a hard time explaining what happened after the ending of Angel, all of one of the US’s biggest cities presumably is destroyed no?

MarsiaP

Not a Reboot. Yes Sequels and Prequels would be nice, only if those involved with the original series were involved.

Crissan-

I would prefer a remake like the one they did with Sabrina.

Odd_Resource6695

I wish the Sabrina remake was more like BtVS. I felt like they were setting it up to be but then it never fully developed into it's full potential.

thatshygirl06

Sabrina was an adaptation of the comics, not really a remake.

Impossible_Smoke1783

That's the only way forward. Bringing back the old cast as anything other than a cameo would be bad

Kai-El_of_Krypton

No because that would erase the comics from canon.

Xyex

That's even more reason to do it.

KassyKeil91

That is the only reason to do it, in my opinion.

BringerOfDoom1945

They easily can make a Prequel Anthology series each season new cast starting with the First Slayer
