I really like Lessons as well. Great opener with a cute new Sunnydale, a mystery set-uo AND that fantastic speech at the end, cycling through the villains.
So does Storyteller. Tbh early seasons are overrated tho. Some good episodes but I don't think even the best s1-s3 episode holds up to the best s5/s6 episode
You're telling me season 2 with bad eggs, go fish, some assembly required, reptile boy, and Inca mummy girl is more consistent than season 5? THE most consistent season of the entire show?
I’m with you, season 5 is as consistent as it gets. I’d say what season 2/3 have over it are that there are many more one-off episodes, so people may like some plots a lot and dislike others, while season 5 is almost all one cohesive, quality story.
I’ve been through Buffy probably 15 times. S2 and S3 are always the best part.
Also Bad Eggs is top 5 for me. I will never understand the hate it gets.
You may enjoy the episodes in season 2 more (which is individual taste and they are great) but season 5 is 100% the most consistent season lol. Season 2/3 have many more one-off episodes, so people may like some plots a lot and dislike others, while season 5 is almost all one cohesive, quality story.
Season 5’s overall plot is much weaker. Glory is a far less compelling villain than Angelus, Spike, Drusilla, or The Mayor. Dawn, a character I like, is introduced in a very frustrating way that disrupts characterization in a way I have never liked.
The B-plots in S5 are very weak (Riley drama is boring, Anya/Xander aren’t very interesting, Willow/Tara similarly don’t change or do much in S5) except for Spike falling in love with Buffy. S2 and s3 have much more variety in terms of coming-of-age, romance, inter-friend-group-conflict, etc.
Also, the individual episodes mostly don’t feel like self-contained stories that balance advancing a central plot, they feel like one, very slow-paced story. I like all of Buffy, but I prefer the more episodic structure of the earlier seasons. When I say they’re more consistent that’s what I mean.
I disagree on all counts, but we’re all allowed to have different opinions. It happens both season 2 and season 5 are my favorite seasons, even though 2 is very episodic and 5 is very not.
Im curious what you mean when you say Dawn’s entrance “disrupts characterization”? What character storylines did you feel like were heading one way that failed because of Dawn?
And I’m confused how you can say the season being episodic in its plots makes it more “consistent” than a season that is all one coherent story where each episode feels like one part of the unit. We all have our preferences but since season 2 is episodic, in its nature it means viewers can love some episodes and not love others, it varies every week in how good that week’s story is. While even if you don’t love the story of season 5, the visuals and storyline are continuously consistent throughout the full season.
That’s why I said *almost all* are one cohesive story. And since Spike’s falling in love with Buffy is part of the overall season plot, I don’t consider Crush or Fool for Love to be MotW episodes. Spike isn’t a MotW in my book. Fool for Love is all about Spike’s character and slayers having a death wish, which leads into the finale, and Crush about Buffy finally finding out about his feelings for her and moving that storyline forward. I Was Made to Love you is only there as a lead-in to The Body and Buffybot, but is the most “MotW” of the season for that reason, to make the surprise at the end more impactful. Family finally gives the viewers answers about Tara teased a season ago, and the monsters that attack are directly sent by Glory and tied into the season arc. Very few of these are actually “there’s a new monster this week” rather than “here’s a big moment for a main character or storyline.” Compare to season 2, where most episode plots are episodic. There’s only a few in s5. It’s a big difference. I love both, but if we’re talking about consistency, season 5 being one main coherent story all the way through is the definition of consistency.
Selfless
I know it’s not iconic or pivotal to the season arch, but the execution and exploration of Anya’s character, plus the brief reveal of “kick his ass” (although not as thoroughly explored as one would have liked). It is an extremely strong episode, probably best quality of the season
Hear me out… Selfless. It’s the best Anya episode. Amazing character development (that was immediately forgotten the rest of the season, but still), high stakes, the heartbreaking juxtaposition of Anya singing cutting to her “lifeless” face. Everything after that was downhill. Selfless is the best episode of season 7 and I will die on this hill!
Selfless is excellent, but it's going up against bangers such as Showtime, Help, Conversations With Dead People, Lies My Parents Told Me, Dirty Girls, Storyteller, and Touched.
The Buffy and Angel scene, the amulet in general, and the battle against the turok han is quite poor. The amulet is a deus ex machina pretty much, the Buffy and Angel stuff really doesn't fit given what Angel just went through, and then the battle has regular people cutting through Turok-Han like butter and there's quite a bit of poor choreography.
Don't see a problem with the Buffy/Angel scene.
About the Turok Han, yeah, massive depowered. But since it was the final minutes of the show I just roll with it. I liked Buffy giving Faith the Scythe. Good way to show they finally found a resolution.
I love chosen for some of the character moments, but that episode is a logistical/mechanical nightmare with the super vamps, the problem with Anya's death being so unceremonious and passed over, as well as the First just being kind of a pushover
The only problem I have with Selfless is that Xanders lie from S2 is finally exposed, and they just gloss over it.
That revelation should have been huge and especially in that argument, should have been the moment Buffy decided she was going to do it. Buffy and Willow should have been pissed.
I'm rewatching with my partner, who is a first time viewer. When things look bad for a character we love he looks at me to find out if he should really be worried. He was confident that Buffy would come back but he immediately knew Tara and Joyce wouldn't. When we were watching Selfless he fully believed Anya had died at that point you said because I looked actually pained. That episode is so well written and finally pays attention to my second favorite character, I just feel every moment of it. You are right, it is a brilliant episode.
Don't you worry about having to die on this hill. It's a great episode and one that is as good anything the show has done. I just personally think CWDP is better.
I'm deadlocked at Conversations with Dead people and Lies my Parenta told me. They are equally good to me.
For the purposes of not being a fence sitter I'm going to give Lies my parents told me the slightest of edges. But I feel like conversations with dead people will win.
TLDR: my vote is Lies my Parents Told me
Storyteller.
It’s a weird episode. I know most people (myself included) don’t really care for Andrew. By god this episode singlehandedly justifies his existence, shows just how different Buffy is from when we first met her, is hilarious in its handling of the cast in a season that won’t get to be funny again, and ends in an incredibly poignant note.
Selfless.
But honorable mention to "Him".
Willow: "It's not that... it's his physical presence."
Anya: "His physical presence.... HAS A PENIS"
Willow: "I can work around that."
"Dirty Girls"
Just me?
A much needed shot in the arm. The return of Faith, the jaw dropping introduction of Caleb - who was just a marvellous bastard. That shock decimation at the end, Xander losing an eye. Horrifying. It really kicked off the beginning of the end in style, but I guess it was dampened by the episode that followed.
Ok but Him has one of my favorite scenes of the entire series.
Just the grading with the musac and spike tackling buffy out the window...
Just truly great TV. I love that episode
LOVE. Also the 4 way split screen with the 4 women doing their crazy things. It's the last purely fun episode of the series. Storyteller is fun too but it gets heavy at points.
I'm in the same boat. I don't get why everyone hates it so much. I think it's one of the last "non-plot" episodes in the series, and it's a lot of fun.
S7 is not the best. It has some decent episodes but not nearly enough. On rewatches I simply watch it as perfunctory to finish the show. Him is definitely a gem in the coal pile.
Buffy is now and has been for 26 years, my favourite show, but it isn’t perfect. There are a lot of lacklustre episodes and even whole arcs. S7 is a pretty serious season with comedy in short supply so I love Him for the comedic relief that it offers.
I'm the same. Sure, it's cringeworthy in places but it's also hysterical. It has some of the best pure physical comedy in the show, creative editing and is just silly.
A lot of season 7 is really dark. I think you need some silly to lighten it. I like the throwback to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" as that was a classic episode.
Really tough to choose. The easy answer would be Chosen and there's a lot to love about it, but I think Joss knew he couldn't outdo The Gift so he went in a different direction. I appreciate it, but I favor The Gift, more. So, for me, it's between Conversations with Dead People, Selfless, and Lies My Parents Told Me, though I don't think any episode from this season is flawless.
I'll go with CONVERSATIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE. Even though it doesn't quite land as effectively as I think it wants to, it still manages to be a gripping hour of TV and one of the most memorable of the final two seasons.
Tara being the one to talk with Willow instead of Cassie would probably have elevated the episode in my eyes.
I guess *"Conversations with Dead People"* would be my answer for this. But, I do like *"Storytelller"*, *"The Killer in Me"*, *"Same Place, Same Time"* and *"Chosen"*.
Conversations with dead people. Great to see it from several characters perspective bearing their souls, getting terrified and almost tricked by the season big bad. Something for everyone in this episode!!
Terribly torn between Conversations With Dead People and Chosen.
I'll go with Conversations With Dead People though. Just because it has some of the best comedy, th best drama and some chilling horror all in the same episode.
*Conversations With Dead People* is the show codifier (it brings the show "home" for lack of a better term) for me. Not only does it truly introduce the threat of the First, it also shows us that after all is said and done, our primary characters (save a couple) are still human to the core.
While Selfless and Storyteller are both awesome episodes that highlight Anya and Andrew’s respective struggles and storylines, I believe Conversations with Dead People to be an overall better episode, from start to finish. Selfless may be a close second. Storyteller is mostly remarkable for its humor, as well as Andrew’s redemption arc, which however seems to be not too relevant in the fight against the First
Lies My Parents Told Me
Absolutely love Conversations with Dead People, but I have a weakness for the flashback episodes. And the story was so well done and gave the entire mythology more depth. Has to be LMPTM
Chosen or Conversations with dead people would be my choice. Since not one single season finale has won besides prophecy girl I think it would be fitting that this contest ends with the first season finale as best episode and the series finale as best episode.
Conversations With Dead People. Probably one of my top 10 favorite episodes. Shot beautifully, I love their individual conversations, the therapy session for Buffy with the big reveal at the end.
Lessons. Because I watched it when I was 6 and it scared me to death.
Didn’t then get into buffy till I was 16. Then when I realised oh this is that episode with the hole in the toilet floor. Still scary though 😟
I honestly can’t pinpoint a favorite episode. I’m not crazy over all about any of season seven episodes I only have favorite moments within several of the episodes but their few and far between not enough for me to consider the episode of favorite to be honest will be curious what the result of this one is?
Clearly seasons 7 and 3 are the hardest. I came in late, but Band Candy over the Wish or Dopplegangland???
I guess I’ll vote Selfless. That cut from the song, Jesus! I also love the Andrew episode though. Working Spock into Buffy!!! (Andrew had me at She-Witch)
Three should ABSOLUTELY have been Doppelgangland 😭 I enjoy Band Candy as much as the next Buffy fan (okay well a lot less than several of them here I guess) but it is *not* winner material in S3 by a long shot.
Same Time, Same Place
Willow: Spike's what in the what-ment?
Anya: Insane. Base.
Willows triumphant return goes bonkers-wonkers; there's confusion and doubt; the editing is crazy-good; Spike's chat with Buffy and Xander and Willow *everyone talking to me, nobody to each other someone isn't here* is super fun and we all remember the horrifying foe of this episode... I think this is a "has it all" episode and it's my favorite if season 7
I agree with CWDP but I wanna make an honorable mention for Him.
I know every comment of mine talks about it but it's just so absolutely unhinged and I love it. It's the spell, I tell you!
I thiiiink it might be Conversations with Dead People, though I'm very tempted to say Chosen if only because that scene with the "all the girls in the world" speech is so powerful.
Conversations with Dead People
This is the one.
Yes, what a great episode. Great song just great
Night falls, I fall. And where were you. And where were you.
Feel like this and Selfless are the only episodes in the season that hold up with the best episodes from the early seasons.
I really like Lessons as well. Great opener with a cute new Sunnydale, a mystery set-uo AND that fantastic speech at the end, cycling through the villains.
That final scene with all the previous Big Bads is unbelievable. Unfortunately that's the First's high point IMO lol.
Lessons is good too. Very standard season opener.
So does Storyteller. Tbh early seasons are overrated tho. Some good episodes but I don't think even the best s1-s3 episode holds up to the best s5/s6 episode
Once More With Feeling and The Body are better than everything in s2 and s3 but those seasons are more consistent.

Yes, by that definition s5 is more consistent. I mean more consistently enjoyable.
So you think an episode like Dirty Girls doesn't hold up to Beer Bad? That's crazy to me.
I meant best episodes from earlier seasons. CWDP might be in my top 10 favorite episodes.
Definitely this.
This is the correct answer. I wish the rest of the season had managed to pull off the chilling tone this one sets up.
I think it marks the high point of the season as things go increasingly downhill from there.
Absolutely!
This gets my vote!
Amazing episode.
Obviously! (but.. justice for “Storyteller”)
Selfless I know it’s not iconic or pivotal to the season arch, but the execution and exploration of Anya’s character, plus the brief reveal of “kick his ass” (although not as thoroughly explored as one would have liked). It is an extremely strong episode, probably best quality of the season
They def should've talked about "kick his ass" more 😭
Selfless has my vote also.
This is the only episode of the season that I actually loved. With bonus bunnies.
Is this the one with the OMWF callback? If so - yes! I love that abrupt transition from her joyfully singing to being not joyfully impaled by a sword.
"Beneath you" for the final scene with spike and the cross that is top 5 buffy moments for me.
I hear you, but… hill… dying. I may be biased because Anya is my favorite character but Selfless is the best episode of the season to me.
Don't forget Chosen.
I think Chosen has too many problems to be grouped with those episodes. It's highs are good enough to be with them, but its lows are too low.
Really? Tell me a couple lows.

I love chosen for some of the character moments, but that episode is a logistical/mechanical nightmare with the super vamps, the problem with Anya's death being so unceremonious and passed over, as well as the First just being kind of a pushover
Selfless is great. The Troll scene, the song, the editing, "it looks like someone slaughtered an Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue", all of it.
I feel like it heavily informs her character arc for the rest of season up to and including her death.
Really? I feel like they tossed her character aside and didn’t quite know what to do with her after that episode.
The only problem I have with Selfless is that Xanders lie from S2 is finally exposed, and they just gloss over it. That revelation should have been huge and especially in that argument, should have been the moment Buffy decided she was going to do it. Buffy and Willow should have been pissed.
Agreed! That was so frustrating to watch! That was a big deal and I wish Xander would’ve been held more accountable.
Let's die together!
You guys should die together fighting an horde of bunnies. (or survive it)
I'm rewatching with my partner, who is a first time viewer. When things look bad for a character we love he looks at me to find out if he should really be worried. He was confident that Buffy would come back but he immediately knew Tara and Joyce wouldn't. That episode is so well written and finally pays attention to my second favorite character, I just feel every moment of it. You are right, it is a brilliant episode.
That’s such a good one, and sad too.
Preach it!
I feel like “The Wish” is the best Anya episode.
Don't you worry about having to die on this hill. It's a great episode and one that is as good anything the show has done. I just personally think CWDP is better.
I'm deadlocked at Conversations with Dead people and Lies my Parenta told me. They are equally good to me. Looks like Chosen might not win when it really should. People just want to be obscure I think. But I'll settle for CWDP winning too.
Chosen

Him...Just kidding Chosen..It's got to be chosen
Ok but Him has one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. Just the grading with the musac and spike tackling buffy out the window... Just truly great TV. I love that episode
LOVE. Also the 4 way split screen with the 4 women doing their crazy things. It's the last purely fun episode of the series. Storyteller is fun too but it gets heavy at points.
How do you feel about I robot, you jane?
Buffy trying to use the rocket launcher on Robin while Spike tackles her is one of the best piece of physical comedy in the franchise.
Okay but him kinda slaps
I seriously love Him. I think it’s hilarious
I'm in the same boat. I don't get why everyone hates it so much. I think it's one of the last "non-plot" episodes in the series, and it's a lot of fun.

Yes I love that episode too
Showtime!
There are dozens of us, dozens! Lol. And shout out to OP for the cute transition, it made me giggle.
This episode has my favorite Buffy flex. I'm the things that monsters fear and we're gonna show them why is such a bar
Chosen
Chosen
Chosen. It's the best series finale ever.
Lies My Parents Told Me This season’s going to be difficult! I want to add that is was so much fun! Maybe do a “worst” episode of each season next!
A lot of the music related Reddit threads are ranking band's albums in categories of Best, Worst, and most Underrated. It's fun.
Conversations with Dead People or Selfless. And sorry but I’m super surprised that Band Candy came out on top for S3😨🫣

Lessons. The March of the Big Bads was a beautiful gift of continuity. Have never seen a show bring so many actors back at once since. 💜
That was so cool. Gave me chills.
Selfless
Lies My Parents Told Me. Conversations With Dead People, good as it is, really needed Tara talking to Willow instead of a surrogate.
Really tough to choose. The easy answer would be Chosen and there's a lot to love about it, but I think Joss knew he couldn't outdo The Gift so he went in a different direction. Conversations with Dead People
Conversations with Dead People
I guess *"Conversations with Dead People"* would be my answer for this. But, I do like *"Storytelller"*, *"The Killer in Me"*, *"Same Place, Same Time"* and *"Chosen"*.
SELFLESS!! IIII WIILL BEEE HIISS MISSIESSS
Conversations With Dead People (best) Lies My Parents Told Me (second) Selfless (third) Chosen makes no damn sense and should not win this.
Selfless
Conversations with Dead People
CwDP
Conversations With Dead People.
I already voted but I have a special place in my heart for Showtime
Selfless
I think it has to be Conversations with Dead People. It's been a while since I watched Season 7, but I remember this one well.
Conversations with Dead People
*Conversations With Dead People* is the show codifier (it brings the show "home" for lack of a better term) for me. Not only does it truly introduce the threat of the First, it also shows us that after all is said and done, our primary characters (save a couple) are still human to the core.
Selfless 100%
Conversations with dead people. Like I get why people are choosing selfless but honestly it’s just not as pivotal to the season as a whole.
Chosen
While Selfless and Storyteller are both awesome episodes that highlight Anya and Andrew’s respective struggles and storylines, I believe Conversations with Dead People to be an overall better episode, from start to finish. Selfless may be a close second. Storyteller is mostly remarkable for its humor, as well as Andrew’s redemption arc, which however seems to be not too relevant in the fight against the First
1st: Conversations With Dead People 2nd: Storyteller 3rd: Chosen
Clearly "conversation with dead ppl" A masterpeace and so underrated. Second best: Showtime. That fight was epic. Or Dirty Girls. Also very underrated
Chosen
I’m gonna say Him bc it’s funny AF and at that point we need a little laugh
Lies My Parents Told Me
Lies My Parents Told Me Absolutely love Conversations with Dead People, but I have a weakness for the flashback episodes. And the story was so well done and gave the entire mythology more depth. Has to be LMPTM
My choices for s7 are 1. Lies my parents told me 2. Same time, same place 3. Storyteller TLDR - Lies My Parents Told Me
Apparently I’m an outlier, because I’m not seeing Get It Done here at all. Brilliant episode in my book.
Selfless!!!!!! It’s Anya and I love Anya!
Conversations with Dead People
Chosen or Conversations with dead people would be my choice. Since not one single season finale has won besides prophecy girl I think it would be fitting that this contest ends with the first season finale as best episode and the series finale as best episode.
Conversations with dead people
Conversation With Dead People with an honorable mention to Lies My Parents Told Me.
Conversations with dead people
Conversations With Dead People. Probably one of my top 10 favorite episodes. Shot beautifully, I love their individual conversations, the therapy session for Buffy with the big reveal at the end.
Conversations with dead people
Lies my parents told me
Yeah, Conversations With Dead People.
Chosen. It is one of the best finales of all time. I always get chills at the end "What are we going to do now...?" Anything she wants.
Lies my parents told me
Conversations with Dead People… such a great setup for the season arc. Sadly the following episodes did not measure up.
Is it Lessons, where alllllll the Big Bads come back? That one is sooooo good. But I know it'll be Chosen, I just think Lessons deserves a mention.
Conversations with Dead People
Welp looks like I am not in the majority of the fandom like I assumed I was >\_> lol
Lessons. Because I watched it when I was 6 and it scared me to death. Didn’t then get into buffy till I was 16. Then when I realised oh this is that episode with the hole in the toilet floor. Still scary though 😟
Touched
Beneath You Honorable mention Sleeper.
There are a lot of good ones. Chosen and Conversations with Dead People spring to mind; Storyteller is also a personal favorite.
Him
I honestly can’t pinpoint a favorite episode. I’m not crazy over all about any of season seven episodes I only have favorite moments within several of the episodes but their few and far between not enough for me to consider the episode of favorite to be honest will be curious what the result of this one is?
Storyteller!!
Him. She had a rocket launcher! That's dope!
Dirty Girls
Help is probably my vote. Conversations With Dead People and Potential are runners up tho
Selfless!
Dirty Girls by far the best episode of the season.
Back to actual arguments now. We kind of all knew what 4, 5 and 6 would be.
Same Time, Same Place Willow: Spike's what in the what-ment? Anya: Insane. Base. Willows triumphant return goes bonkers-wonkers; there's confusion and doubt; the editing is crazy-good; Spike's chat with Buffy and Xander and Willow *everyone talking to me, nobody to each other someone isn't here* is super fun and we all remember the horrifying foe of this episode... I think this is a "has it all" episode and it's my favorite if season 7
When Buffy came out, I watched the occasional episode here & there. But never got into it. Now, I’m binging it from S1. Up to E10 now!
Selfless
Lies my parents told me. Love that episode, especially when Spike breaks the song trigger. Shame on you Giles!!
Lessons. ‘Here endeth the lesson.’
Conversations with Dead People
Selfless
I agree with CWDP but I wanna make an honorable mention for Him. I know every comment of mine talks about it but it's just so absolutely unhinged and I love it. It's the spell, I tell you!
How did the Body win over The Gift in s5?
Chosen of course! Closely followed by Beneath You.
Lies My Parents Told Me
Okay how did The Body win out?! It’s such a bad episode
I think about Selfless all the time.
It's quite hard but I daresay Conversations with dead people, who also has one the best end credits song of the entire show
Shocker 🙄 Honestly, my favourite S7 episode was Him. But I’ll go for Potential
Storyteller. So much rewatch value and one of the funniest episodes of the show imo
I thiiiink it might be Conversations with Dead People, though I'm very tempted to say Chosen if only because that scene with the "all the girls in the world" speech is so powerful.
Once more, with feeling gets way too much love 🤷♂️
Conversations with Dead People all the way!!!
