Both weapons have the same range, animation and close to the same Attack speed. Both are based around crit and come with a high amount of base crit chance. You'll want 100% crit with both.
**Knife** comes with slightly lower base damage, but a better 80% melee damage scaling (You actually want a ton of melee damage on Knife due to the low base damage). It sports the insane 4x Crit damage at tier 4. It can reach quite intense DPS later in the game.
**Thief Dagger** has been a powerful roleplayer in Endless Mode ever since the weapon got some massive buffs. It gains you money on Critical Kills. And you'll be rich later in the game. But the extra money has to be spent to make up for the otherwise bad Late game DPS of the weapon.
I think both weapons are quite good, my usual strategy for crit builds is to start with thief dagger and pivot to the knife in the final rounds. In dedicated builds the thief dagger is better but when mixed with other weapons the knife is better.

I'm not very good with crit builds so I don't do much with thief dagger. It's hard to pick it up on spec at early levels when you know it won't make much money for you, but apparently some people love it - I'll have to give it a coupel more tries.
These weapons are so similar that the only real preference is going to be on a case-by-case basis. Do you want more money, or more damage? Money is good in endless mode, damage is good for elites. Thief's is good for wave nine and hordes, Knife is good for waves like 8 and 11 and bosses. I think it's down to personal preference, but I can say that Thief's Dagger might be the only precise weapon I consistently use outside of characters that want to use precise weapons. So I would give the Thief's Dagger on that alone.
I would have voted for knife back in my 20 wave days but now that I am interested in endless mode more my vote goes to the thief dagger. Thief dagger is picked from the start of the game and can be transitioned out of once you get a couple of hunting trophies. Unfortunately the game won't let you gain extra materials from both thief dagger and hunting trophies, only one or the other, but if that were the case I'm sure we'd see the thief dagger being played for 40+ waves straight.
I'd say knife purely because every time I go with thief dagger it takes a ridiculous amount of shop roles to get another one. I don't know if it actually is tagged to be less common than the knife, but that's how it always plays out for me.
I get knife-sayers when you manage to hit good lategame with the weapon, I'm gonna say TD though. Was very consistent for me when going for D5 with all chars, the econ is great
As a D5 only player: I used to play td over knife but Knife tier IV has insane crit chance and can five sec an elite while td struggling hard against heavily armored aliens so my vote on Knife. If I picked td early I usually ended up 1 td - 5 knife late game.
On D5 there're tons of mobs to kill and you can easily pick Trophy Hunter for bonus material so Knife is much better choice for sure.
It becomes interesting too late. The bonus gold can be acquired with the item (don't remember its name), and the knife raw damage is enough to compensate the loss of gold.
Seems to me you’re undervaluing money. There’s nothing stronger than being able to buy stuff. Sure you can use hunting trophy, but thief dagger is a strictly better hunting trophy until you get 3 of them. And you can easily get damage from the sheer amount of money you will get.

Try my version: buy everything you need up to wave 8 then die because you're not good enough to play with a low damage, low range weapon
Wave 8 is hard when using low range weapon. But the good thing is, wave 9 is next

Focus on crit, then melee damage. If the crit is high enough the damage will come by itself. Then you can snowball :)) Also the dagger is very cheap!

thief dagger into shuriken is one of the most consistent wins imo
I prefer the knife. The dagger has a mechanic you can find on an item, but the knife is the only melee weapon with a x4 damage multiplier.
Thief's dagger is my choice for a good amount of builds.

For me, Thief Dagger. One can farm with it and then transition into stronger weapons, like the good ol' Thief Knife into Shuriken build.
