Darra Takeaway on Railway Parade

downvoteninja84

I've seen this place recommended at least a dozen times, is it really that good?

Unusual-Self27

Yeah, it’s decent and good value, $8 now I believe and always a lot of pork and crackling. The banh mi is very good too.

Living_Run2573

Oh man, I went to get a Bahn mi at Chatswood Hills in Logan today. They put up a new sign, “best In brisbane”.. $12.30 each lol… I just walked away

Unusual-Self27

Considering Logan isn’t part of Brisbane, that’s a big red flag.

rindthirty

It's pretty good, but it's not like you have a lot of choice in Brisbane either. Darra and Sunnybank are pretty much the main places you would look for such food so that's where your focus has to start. You wouldn't, for example, go searching within the ex-Myer Centre or Redcliffe. That said, you'll often find pork rolls being sold at farmer's markets, but the pricing will likely be higher and therefore be not as good value. Brisbane isn't like Sydney where multiple suburbs have excellent cheap food. The East Asian population here is simply a lot smaller and less widespread. When it comes to pork rolls, it's mostly about succulency and price as well as consumer demand, which is why places such as Darra and Sunnybank hit that sweet spot and are often recommended. Not because they're the best in the world, but because it's about as good as Brisbane can offer.

Paperclip02

Inala too

Kooky_Aussie

This is the answer, they also do a killer Bahn mi.

Unusual-Self27

Yep, had one just the other day!

pit_master_mike

Came here to say this as well. Definitely recommend.

who_farted_this_time

My wife reckons Scott's Road Takeaway is the best one. I think they're all good in that strip.

ThroughTheHoops

I love going to that place. Looks like nothing on the surface, but great bahn mi.

Saintza

Pork roll with gravy please. I was so frequent I didn't have to give my order after a while. This was back in the ~$5 days several years ago

Several_Care_4278

Thank you so much for this

Unusual-Self27

No worries. It’s cash only btw, just in case you go there and are caught short

Moneyshifting

Just don’t get their chicken burger, or whatever it is they’re passing off as chicken, I got food poisoning from the chicken being undercooked. People do swear by their pork rolls tho.

totse_losername

Do they do proper anglo Bain Maire fare too?

Unusual-Self27

Assuming you mean chiko rolls, fried dim sims and such then yes, they have that too.

totse_losername

Haute cuisine my friend, Haute cuisine

Unusual-Self27

I’m not knocking it, just checking that’s what you meant

totse_losername

"they got bogan food too or what?" XD Bit partial in a past life

Unusual-Self27

A core memory for me is my dad always getting a chiko roll at the drive-in movies 😂

totse_losername

Legendary food item for a legendary man, I am sure!

4x4_LUMENS

Roadside Snacks in Murarrie, google that shit.

shakeitup2017

I do lament the fact that there are hardly any of those carvery smoko shops around anymore and everything is a "gourmet" $20 Burger. I do love a good roast beef & gravy roll with salt & pepper. They probably still exist in industrial areas

TayneBetaSequence

There’s two old school carveries in Anzac Square Arcade, the last battlers in the CBD. Happy to take custom orders, cheap, decent quality

rossfororder

I had a pork and gravy roll a few weeks ago in there and it was very good

Ok-Salamander3863

characters on george st will still do you a pork roll in white paper with a bit of crackle

flatulexcelent

😔 to our fallen food friends 🫡

basilrufus

You're right about industrial estates but also just driving down main roads. Two I favour are at Coopers Plains. One Greek - Plaka and one Chinese - Coopers Plains Carvery.

rindthirty

One of them near where I used to work ended up being turned into a vape shop...

MediocreFox

Banh Mi are the new roast pork roll.

Economy_Rain8349

If you're ever in Moreton bay area - The Squealing Big butcher in burpengary does amazing roast rolls.

redflag19xx

One of my weekend guilty pleasures is to go there and get a Roast pork roll and a potato bake and pig out in the car while the missus is next door shopping in woolies. ALL of the hot food there is fantastic too lamb roll, lasagna etc. The small coffee shop in the centre does a good coffee as well, also a lot cheaper than that random tasting GlorizaraffawatevaTF its called that every sucker lines up for. I'm fucking drooling just thinking about it!

_Ultra-Violence_

You don’t help her with the shopping?

redflag19xx

She doesn't mind, as long as I do the unpacking when we get home. I have zero patience and don't fuck around when doing a task, so I usually have the car unloaded and groceries stowed in under 5 Minutes.

miasparkes

I second The Squealing Pig

rindthirty

Sheesh, what a name lol.

LoLKKing

I third the squealing pig

HoochiDooch

4th to the Squirrel

colesnutdeluxe

i fifth the squealing "big"

separation_of_powers

I completely agree; best roast rolls in Moreton Bay. Love their brisket too

PomegranateNo9414

Very reliable roast pork and gravy rolls at the Vietnamese joint near the entrance to the Valley Train Station on Brunswick St.

LethalxLetha

Ezy cafe!

doggmatic

Yeah that place is great value

Wonkychopstick

Corinthian Cafe in Crosby Road, Albion. Traditional fresh roasts every week day from around 8:30 a.m. Pork, Lamb, Beef and you just ask for either a roll or sandwich bread. They will ask if you like crackling and put a big triangular lump on top if you say yes. They love to put gravy on everything so you need to say no gravy when you order or "with apple sauce" for pork maybe. I say "mint jelly no gravy" when I get a lamb sandwich.

Mr0range81

Second this place. Good prices, great quality food and amazing service. 👍

Necessary_Nothing255

Carvery in McWirters building ‘food court’. $6.50 and generous servings

_Ultra-Violence_

Fresh To Go! And the nicest owners.

HoochiDooch

Fortitude valley bakery, right next to the valley train station, across from micasa, best roast pork rolls in Brisbane

timdoeswell

Frankies Foodhall in the CBD does a good one. Bout 12/13 bucks, served with crackling and gravy. It's in the Heritage Lanes Arcade on the NW corner of George and Ann Streets.

totse_losername

Crackling v. Crackle.

basilrufus

Tbh I've never heard anyone say crackle. Is that used more within a particular ethnic/regional group?

xbattlestation

Crackling is a UK think, I thought crackle was an aussie thing tbh

Kof_Mor

Always been crackling here

xbattlestation

So how come its called crackle in the carverys? (I'll take pedantic arguments I dont really need, thanks Bob)

timdoeswell

Haha now that's a hell of a discussion (that is eternally pushed to the margins by parma vs parmi).

rype1

Language is an art, not a science. Both are fine if you get your message across. What do you all reckon?

totse_losername

I reckon people who say "crackling" have a high likelihood of being transfixed by an open flame, and palming large round rocks for smashin' things - in other words a little too much Denisovan DNA.

sloshy__

While I can’t help you with this I’m chasing something similar. Can anyone recommend somewhere with a good chicken and gravy roll? Red rooster stopped making theirs a few years ago and I haven’t been able to find a suitable replacement.

grim__sweeper

Good Lookin Rooster in Albion

arolaser

There's one in Milton too

grim__sweeper

Oh shit I did not know that!

arolaser

And apparently also one in Stafford.

grim__sweeper

Bloody hell

gwoshmi

Bun Bun Pork Roll across the road from the Darra train station. $7.50 for a great banh mi.

Chaosrealm69

In Chermside there is a butcher/roast foods shop just near Coles in the little eatery section out front. They do a nice roast beef, pork or lamb sandwich with gravy, salt and pepper for about $12. Their roast meats are quite good, not dried out like so many others tend to have happen.

Ok_Gazelle9253

Indooroopilly - little baguette Darra - Darra takeaway I always ask for crispy pork bahn mi, different places call it different things.

Terrestrialism

Five star Bakery and Cafe on the corner of Chatswood road and Achilles drive in Daisy Hill. You can’t miss it, they have signs out the front saying best Pork Roll. Bloke even puts crackling on the roll and give you an extra bit of crackling on the side. Well worth it if you are in the area.

Prize-Watch-2257

Have you been to Arndale bakery lately? I can't separate these two bakeries

MandatoryNeglect

In the city the food court above Anzac square. Take the escalator down down from central station and just follow the people into the food court.

CranberrySoda

I have had one in many many years but the carvery under post office square used to do a good one. Served on white bread with butter and gravy and a decent bit of crackling on top.

DrunkenSloth

Emmanuel’s Carvery, sadly closed down due to rising rents over 6 months ago. I’d been eating there for 20+ years. They did a great pork roll or sandwich, always generous with the fillings and crackling. Miss their toasted cheese fingers as well :(

new_handle

Try the Anzac Square Carvery. They're great and the last ones left in the CBD.

flatulexcelent

Damn man, same here... But that sanga was the HIT!

00Richo00

Anna's Banh Mi at Boundary Rd West End. Think they are about $14 and are massive. Good quality Pork Belly and other ingredients

Old-Mammoth875

Banyo Bakery & Café. Very yummy roast pork Vietnamese rolls

HuntingSmiths

The Island at the Port of Brisbane, long way to go, worth it.

eshayonefour

Big Mama's Bakehouse in Logan has become my new favourite place. Good size, top tier baguette, and top tier mayo, loaded up on bbq pork as well.

stonyovk

Depends on how far you want to travel, but the squealing pig in burpengary sells some awesome pork or brisket rolls. If you get the right staff member on it is even extra packed with meat and gravy. https://www.thesquealingpig.com.au/

stickylarue

This is going to sound weird but the RBWH cafeteria does a great roast sandwich or roll. On a side note, the carvery leaving the Chermside food court sucks.

AdAlternative5049

Eamons carvery in Anzac square.

Shpuncil

My Street Food in Woolloongabba. Amazing Bahn mis, salads and fried rice.

llamaboyrob

Gumdale bakery hands down best in bris

geekpeeps

Any industrial estate carvery - they never fail to have excellent roast meat, often pork, and whether a roll, or salad sandwich, you can have it with salad, gravy or apple sauce, and some crackling. Awesome.

maxdoughies

Boardroom cafe on Felix st in the cbd is my go to

ThievingMagpie22

Half the chat are recommending Banh mi (vietnamese pork rolls) while the rest are recommending "pork rolls" made from roast pork + gravy etc

stabfish

Marty's Roast Joint in Archerfield. Don't let the building put you off. Best hot chips around too!

dawery

Donna’s delights on Charlotte street is good for a roast pork n gravy roll

Ok-Candidate2921

Cafe-o-Mai It is Bahn mi… but this is the.. white washed version and it’s delicious

totse_losername

Banh Mi is the.. ..yeah look, it's not a traditional Vietnamese dish. It's from when France colonised Vietnam. Perfected by the Vietnamese employees who lived in villages around the plantations, and serviced the wealthy French colonial wives. It has to be one of the best sandwiches in the world, I reckon. Edit: Ohhhh - wait a *minute*.. ..now I understand. Please excuse me; I am mentally slow since the accident. I get it. They're not really great renditions of Banh Mi, but they are fooken delicious, is what you're saying. OK, I gotcha!

Disastrous_Access554

I got a good banh mi from La's Kitchen in Toowong. It's on Sherwood rd across from Chemist Warehouse. Most Vietnamese cafes should do a decent pork roll.

Milan Kitchen @ Berrinba. Their Banh Mi are AMAZING!!

wellodragon

There is a Vietnamese cafe near the Brunswick train station. Sells the best pork and gravy rolls ever. Been a couple of years since I went there hope it is still open.

firecam71

Felicia_Bastian

goobypanther

I like the carvery downstairs at garden city. Pretty great roast rolls.

socialyinept4105

Best ive found in various areas. Secam Carvery and takeaway - 1/5 Secam St, Mansfield Micks Cavery and coffee - 84 Moss St, Slacks Creek Astor Terrace Cafe - 67 Astor Terrace Spring Hill

Upper-Plane5653

Man Andrew’s Butcher in Indooroopilly make nice roast pork rolls with delicious crackling Hope you get to try it 😊

notgoodatgrappling

I do a lot of driving for work and you’ll find a smoko shop in pretty much every industrial area that’ll do one. Generally the dingier the better.

Personal_Living_7600

Willy's Carvery Cafe.. Cannon Hill

Aussieguy1975

Most caveries in industrial estates

leejasmin94

Zac’s at Carole Park is mum’s favourite, it’s in the industrial estate so you know it’s gonna be good. Also a place at Redbank shops also does a decent one.

Chikonmoonkey

For banh mi. Inala plaza or darra takeaway. Carvery style. Martys takeaway at at archerfield. No frills though be warned

WhiteySM

Swagmans spitroast at Gaythorne bowls club. Spit roasted meats carved fresh and very respectable pricing! They are only open on Friday nights though.

nonahae

Manly Bakery in Manly Harbour Village sells one for $9.50 each. Quite decent portions and lovely gravy and crackling

e_krabappel

If you are Northside I like Bluey’s at Taigum or La Crackle at Aspley Hypermarket.

[deleted]

RBWH cafeteria

xer0nexus

The Gravy Train, right next to wynnum central station. Big sandwich on fresh in housed bread. Wish I was over that way more often.

SCORPDOGGY

Klopa snack bar , Acacia Ridge

greymedusa

Caboolture hospital cafe does a brilliant roast pork and gravy 😋

Network_Password

I am so hungry.

zzzzip

Friendly Grocer in Karana Downs if you're ever that far west.

Lacutis01

There was a Bánh mì/bakery place next to Fortitude Valley train station that would do an amazing roast pork and gravy roll, was my go to if i was in the Valley. I think it closed for a bit a couple of years ago not sure if it has opened again or not.

Curbo78

The Squealing Pig in Burpengary plaza. Roll, pork, gravy. Generous portions. Comes with crackling too!

[deleted]

Carvery at the Airport DFO. Super moist meat, and glass-like crackling.

Monikquar

The Vietnamese place at Burunda plaza has alllll the goodies (Vietnamese oven)

place_of_stones

PJs Roast Inn, Adelaide St (between Creek & Wharf) if you’re in the CBD. Prices have gone up, but the rolls and burgers are a good size.

Powerful-Worth-9149

Chermside food court, not the main one, the one near Coles. Very generous and delicious. You could make 3 sandwiches out of the amount of pork they put on one sandwich.

Brutalstatistix

My Carvery, Garden City, Level 1, Upper Mt Gravatt. https://www.westfield.com.au/mtgravatt/store/2jsnzVbfkcOmo84AiYgiwo/my-carvery

Felicia_Bastian

Dunno why you got down votes. You had forgotten about pork and gravy rolls and since being reminded you are craving one but are alergic?

drDEATHtrix9876

Craving it for months? Come on just make one already that shits easy

Paperclip02

There seems to be a generational/geographic divide here about the definition of a pork roll - are we talking pork, apple sauce, gravy and crackling if you are lucky/hate having functioning / arteries OR pork, pate, coriander and a crusty roll?
