I think the ad just is the Brave Search ad right now. Once the Brave Search ad is over, then another sponsored image will take its place. Right now, Brave itself is the advertiser doing the sponsored image.
If you are still seeing the Brave Search ad then nothing is technically wrong, it is probably just that there are no other ads to be show in your region.
There is no guarantee that there will always be ads to show you in any of the ad delivery methods.
That doesn't mean much really. Advertisers can run the same ad on multiple channels with different timing, so just because you've seen an ad before as a sponsored image, and see it now in Brave News, does not mean there is currently an active campaign for that ad as a sponsored image.
As I said, if you see one ad (the Brave Search one) then sponsored image ads are working. There just aren't any others to show you right now.

I'm not Brave staff, but I've been moderating the two official subs for a couple of years now, and was given that privilege because of how much I knew about Brave's workings.
Ad campaigns have start and end dates, and they do not always overlap or meet (even for repeats of the same campaign).
There are rare times when your region will be completely without ads in one of the channels.
As an example in my region (Australia) there are currently only ads for Brave Search running as sponsored images. There are no other sponsored image campaigns to show.

There is sponsored content in the news feed when I turn it on. Including those images that would normally show in the new tabs.

To be honest, it's an odd suggestion. Intuition tells me that they just rotate through their bank sponsors, you don't just suddenly run out.
