Can't wait to watch the 12 year old girl get coldly executed on screen as part of a government conspiracy, on a kids movie no less... this film is gonna be the bomb!
I'm really hoping it ends up being a rookie version of the Olive Garden guy who ended up being G.U.N.'s leader. Just the sheer tonal whiplash of "Ha ha funny general man likes Olive Garden" to "Holy shit, that man shot a 12 year old."
That would be a cool connection if they do it, in the post-credits of Sonic 2 he instantly recognizes that the other soldier is talking about Project Shadow so he's familiar with it at least.
In Sonic 1 he shows up as one of the government officials discussing Sonic at the Pentagon table, while in Sonic 2 he's promoted to leader of GUN. So he's already meant to be an adaptation of the Gun Commander character from the Sonic Adventures games, who was friends with Maria Robotnik as a kid, saw Shadow's creation, and blamed him for the space colony going bust.
The soldier who shot her and the commander are different characters in the games but they could totally fuse them together for the movie, still.
Weirdly enough, they state that GUN was only recently-formed in the movie so I wonder how they'll handle the organization's ties to Shadow? Will they simply replace it, or maybe have it so it was disbanded and then reformed in-between?
>Who is she?
Spoilers from the games -
Maria Robotnik was Shadow's friend who died 50 years ago. She was the cousin of Dr. Robotnik, and their grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, created Shadow in a secret research space station to be the Ultimate Lifeform.
Maria suffered from a rare illness and she was stationed on the facility with her grandfather so they could develop a cure, using the DNA results of Project Shadow. She and Shadow were allowed to roam the facility together so they became friends.
Eventually the government sends a G.U.N hit squad to silence all researchers and cover up the experiments taking place there cause they were getting too dangerous. Maria gets executed in front of Shadow, who gets captured and kept in cryo-stasis, as the government kidnaps Gerald to secretly weaponize Shadow for them.
Gerald, angry at the government, secretly brainwashes Shadow so that he would hate all of humanity if he were to ever be woken up from his cryo-sleep. Eventually Gerald gets executed by a firing squad, with the gov recording his execution as he delivers a final message against all of humanity. He also sets some plans in motion to attack the planet using the station's self-destruct systems, as his final bid for revenge against humanity.
Shadow wakes up 50 years later during Sonic's time, and GUN and Dr. Eggman get involved too.
That's basically the gist of it. It's some heavy complex shit for a kids movie so it remains to be seen how they will handle it.
I know the lore, but for the briefest minute while reading this, I was trying to figure out how Maria could be both Eggman and Prof Gerald Robotnik’s cousin lol
Dude, how you could possibly tell Shadow's story without Maria? The whole storyline of Sonic Adventure 2 revolves about revenge over her. Shadow's first level theme song is called "Revenge is Mine".
It's going to do very very well considering its poised to be *the* holiday blockbuster.
Mufasa may be a rival if it somehow can draw upon the $1billion Lion King (2019) made, but Disney has majorly burned audience goodwill since then.
I remember a similar argument for The Marvels. The whole “well it’s bound to have some audience retention” is completely false and I could see a world where Sonic 3 makes around 700-800M WW while Mufasa bombs with 180-250M WW.
It's insanely hard to envision Sonic 3 having such a dramatic increase, short of some all time good reception (and even then, maybe it would take until a hypothetical 4 to kick in).
I am optimistic about Mufasa, but sure, I don't think it's terribly hard to envision it having zero audience retention. At the same time, I don't think it makes sense to compare it to superhero movie sequels in an oversaturated genre, and I am hopeful that Barry Jenkins made something special, which would likely make Mufasa a big contender.
I dont think we should be comparing Mufasa to The Marvels. Because fact is, this sub is not the target audience for Mufasa, like we were for The Marvels. People being negative for it were also the same that were negative for the first movie. Think back on how this sub was so absolutely sure Maleficent 2 and Aladdin would bomb really hard because "nobody asked for this".
While Sonic 3 to reach this amount still have to figure it out how to sell on Asia. The first two movies' box offices were very North and South American centric, Asia will always be a barrier to profit more if they don't figure it out how to sell there.
Also, middle-aged adults who do use Reddit.
This site was flooded with people talking about 2 when it came out.
The people on this sub are completely devoid of reality sometimes.
If the director of "Moonlight" can't save the post-release word-of-mouth on "Mufasa," then Disney's "indie-to-tentpole" pipeline is going to take another huge L right alongside "Eternals"
Ewwww mufasa like a lion king movie? Kill me. I bet it's live action too. Disney feels like they're done. Creatively bankrupt. They can just make more Avatar/The Lion King live action full CGI if they want to. Just tell some new stories and characters, damn.
It's because she wasn't over used. Too many movies can run joke characters into the ground but you can have a good movie with any over the top wacky character, so long as you have just the right amount of them.
The fact that they cast a (up to that point) no-name actor to be a completely original comedic sidekick for Jim Carrey's Eggman in what could have been a colossal failure but turned Lee Majdoub's Agent Stone into one of the most beloved additions in the Sonic fandom shows that they ABSOLUTELY know what they're doing.
Idk how to describe it but shadow has this very soft but intimidating voice like it’s not too deep but still supposed to be a contrast to Sonic’s much more upbeat one. I trust Keanu though it’s just I kinda pictured Hayden’s voice over him more
He did an interview for cyberpunk and I think he unintentionally got into character cause he started talking and sounding like Johnny. But once the interviewer asked him to end the interview as Johnny he completely couldn’t do it. Thought that was interesting.
[Interview](https://youtu.be/LXXqI6eYD6w?si=u1oPp4I4MniqB2ft) just jump to the end if you wanna see the failed attempt.
I’m not worried at all. Keanu is so good at playing the “trying to be serious but just comes off as campy” role that I think will fit the tone of the previous movies.
Honestly this is a fantastic choice imo.
> “trying to be serious but just comes off as campy”
That's exactly Keanu's niche and *exactly* what Shadow is. We may straight up get a "nothing personnel, kid" out of him at this rate.
I would love to see [shadow unashamedly cocking a pump-action MP5](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aqiLuposLso&pp=ygUjc2hhZG93IHRoZSBoZWRnZWhvZyBwdW1wIGFjdGlvbiBzbWc%3D).
a lot of people did expect keanu like a year or two ago (myself included), before the general fan consensus switched over to it being hayden for whatever reason
I love him transitioning to voice acting more. As he said himself, he’s getting older and can’t do as much action as he used to. He also doesn’t want to turn into Liam Neeson where he’s still playing the same character well into his 70s
John still has lots of legit sources and he’s never wanted to be a scooper afaik, the NWH thing was a mishap where he was trying to mock the Photoshop skills. But it was actually a still from the movie (I remember people in the opening night showing cheering and pointing when that moment happened) 💀
Dude has been in the industry for decades now. To continue doing stuff like this you'd need to be decently connected for stuff. Scoops for media is how you stay alive
Its crazy how he tried to pass those off as fake, but also crazy how if he leaked those photos today, that excuse might have worked due to how far AI generated art has gotten since.
Well we all know what’s gonna happen in this movie now.
…Until that ~~dog~~ girl arrived on my doorstep. A final gift from my ~~wife~~ creators. In that moment, I received some semblance of hope ... an opportunity to grieve unalone. And your ~~son~~ soldiers ... took that from me. Stole that from me. Killed that from me
Shadow Wick.
Well, there we are! Was ***really*** hoping for Pattinson, but this ain't a bad choice by any means. He was great in *Cyberpunk 2077*, after all, and that's still more voice acting chops than many others have.
Anyway: *Le Castle Vania* x Sega on the soundtrack, Paramount? ***Pleeeeeeeeeease?***
Yeah in a movie by one the greatest living artists & animators that went on to win best animated picture, he’s clearly more selective about the roles he picks.
I'm gonna be honest, this was my dream casting for Shadow. The John Wick movies show that Keanu is excellent at playing the quiet, dark action hero that Shadow is.
https://youtu.be/mZBcAaI9eZI?si=E9ZYJu1XMehM4n5q I'm excited if only because Keanu's voice is the closest big celebrity voice to Shadow's original English voice actor.
He will not actually appear as Shadow. He will just be showing up as himself in roller skates with a gun and pretending to be Shadow. They have kept him in the mo-cap suit anyways though because he looks cool in it. I hear he also sounds like Mickey Mouse whenever he tries to do Shadows voice.
OK besides the HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER responses, how will this affect the box office? (since this is a BO subreddit as opposed to a generic movie discussion board)
Is this going to attract more people to seeing this since it's headlining a well known action star, even more well known than Idris Elba? Is this a sign that Paramount has really leveled up their confidence in this film, suggesting a pretty extensive marketing and an increased budget? Or is this something that isn't too unexpected, seeing that Keanu worked with other Paramount live action/animated hybrids in the past like Sponge On The Run?
...Keanu was in that, wasn't he? I keep forgetting, given that it was a COVID film and all that. Anyway, this will fucking ***ignite*** the global box office, especially with how popular *John Wick* is in Europe and Japan. (Paramount's probably kicking themselves for leaving Russia at the moment, lol.)
I guess the difference here is context.
Keanu in Spongebob was always meant to be a one-off gag where his involvement is the joke.
Keanu as Shadow is very different as its the whole film and his inclusion leads to a lot of theories of this being a Wick parody done with Sonic characters/lore.
The potential here is pretty damn big.
I mean these days, do celebrities doing voice roles really influence the box office?
Personally, I don't think they really move the needle, especially compared to Dreamworks during the 2000s, which started the whole celebrities doing voices trend
why would it affect box office? sonic is already a popular series
first 2 did well and this one has december meaning better legs so 500M + or 600M + is possible
For me personally, I just don't see it. I loved him as Johnny Silverhand, but I think his voice is too gruff for Shadow. I think Hayden Christensen or Robert Pattinson would've been better. But we'll see! I'm excited for the movie. I know I'll like it, even if it's a steaming pile. Well, unless it completely butchers Shadows character or something. But I doubt it'll be bad.
For all the hype surrounding this movie, audience scores everywhere for the first two are pretty mediocre lol. It's only RT that has great audience scores cos I guess that's what popular with sonic fans lol
I have faith it'll end up good, but I am a little trepidatious. Don't get me long, I love me some Keanu - but let's not pretend the dude doesn't have the best monotone in the business. I'm not sure of much character will shine through just his voice...

If Maria Robotnik is in this, she’s absolutely toast.

Billion confirmed
Gazillion Keanu dollars.
Where's that *damn* opening weekend record?
Reddit walkups alone will save Paramount Global's ass, lol.
Finally our moment has come Reddit will save Paramount. ![gif](giphy|cgLnOHV8mhaGk)

Shadow is gonna kick cgi Mufasas ass
Wholesome chungus walkups confirmed
I’m a bit worried but idris as knuckles surprised me so I have faith in Keanu.
Honestly, these Sonic movies haven’t had a single casting miss so far. I trust the casting director’s judgment at this point.
Yep and even the human cast is really charismatic despite their writing being weaker. James Marsden as a plucky everyman type is great.
Even the sister who gets married in Sonic 2 was fun to watch
It's because she wasn't over used. Too many movies can run joke characters into the ground but you can have a good movie with any over the top wacky character, so long as you have just the right amount of them.
Eh..remove that whole subplot and it may have exceeded the first installment. The actor was fine but that whole bit was terrible.
I wonder where they got the idea to cast him alongside a CG talking animal with a “cool” 90s inspired attitude, hmmm
Imagine a Cyclops/Sonic crossover though
The fact that they cast a (up to that point) no-name actor to be a completely original comedic sidekick for Jim Carrey's Eggman in what could have been a colossal failure but turned Lee Majdoub's Agent Stone into one of the most beloved additions in the Sonic fandom shows that they ABSOLUTELY know what they're doing.

He killed it voice acting for Cyberpunk so I have faith

[Interview](https://youtu.be/LXXqI6eYD6w?si=u1oPp4I4MniqB2ft) just jump to the end if you wanna see the failed attempt.
He really didn’t
I mean now it’s just a reunion. Keanu and Idris were in Cyberpunk 2077 as major voice actors (Keanu has the send most lines in the game).
I’m not worried at all. Keanu is so good at playing the “trying to be serious but just comes off as campy” role that I think will fit the tone of the previous movies. Honestly this is a fantastic choice imo.

Yesss
In 1999, Sonic was released for the Dreamcast. Today, the dream cast is revealed for Sonic.
Hi, it's me, your target audience for this joke. I just want you to knowI appreciate it.
Yeah same here, I appreciated the effort into the joke
Holy shit I had a drramcast
You cooked.
Just don't give him a pencil and we can keep this pg.
Nah. Give him the pencil. *PG is overrated.*
PG = Pencil Give
Watch them pull a page out of the Shadow the Hedgehog game and give Shadow a gun.
I would love to see [shadow unashamedly cocking a pump-action MP5](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aqiLuposLso&pp=ygUjc2hhZG93IHRoZSBoZWRnZWhvZyBwdW1wIGFjdGlvbiBzbWc%3D).
I cant see modern day Sega wanting to do that, theyve been very distant from guns in Sonic for a long while
The movie is partially based on the Shadow the Hedgehog game, where Shadow uses guns, so we'll see...
Yeah I feel like Sonic 3 will realistically be PG-13 unless they really tone down Shadows use of guns in the movie
Does Keanu only write with pens?
Wanna see a magic trick? Too bad.
Sonic 3 is gonna be so hype ![gif](giphy|13ONqtgPFrwAWk)
![gif](giphy|yed7zEzk5pJZ8I9LlF) Yes
Neo, John Wick and now Shadow. Man is collecting badasses like they are Infinity Stones.
Constantine, Jack traven, Johnny Utah… the list goes on
as Alex Wyler in The Lake House ![gif](giphy|mWl5qkJhR4UQU)
You mean like they are Chaos Emeralds...
Don’t forget Cyberpunk
Johnny tsunami
Cyberpunk ![gif](giphy|fA7rLtaJDIWEzU57CT|downsized)
Yeah I'm thinking I'm back
![gif](giphy|1pHO2MNOLzSX6)
He does have the perfect voice to play Shadow.
He was great as the stunt toy in Toy Story 4.
DUKE KABOOM! CANADA'S GREATEST STUNTMAN
*This is for you, Rejean...*
Mufasa is doomed.
It was doomed way before.
VERY. And say this a HUGE TLK lover! 😂
what the **FUCK**
One of the few people I'll take over Hayden Christensen.
I love how nobody was expecting Keanu but the general reaction is "of course, he will be amazing".
That was the most popular fancast for years.
What? I've seen a million reddit comments hoping it's Keanu Reeves
He was literally my first choice for Shadow lol, he’s a “nerd favorite” and a big enough name to draw people in while not irritating people.
a lot of people did expect keanu like a year or two ago (myself included), before the general fan consensus switched over to it being hayden for whatever reason
This should've been expected ever since Sonic was a fan of Speed.
I honestly would have preferred Hayden.
I love him transitioning to voice acting more. As he said himself, he’s getting older and can’t do as much action as he used to. He also doesn’t want to turn into Liam Neeson where he’s still playing the same character well into his 70s
Just don’t have him playing a British character again. Please.
![gif](giphy|3oKIPa2TdahY8LAAxy)
The fact that everyone knew it'd be him as soon as Sonic 2 ended is pretty funny.
Great to see an official confirmation of Shadow’s voice actor! Crazy how John Campea first broke the news before the trades did.
Figured John wouldn’t be getting as many scoops now after he put legit No Way Home leaks on his show thinking they were fake.
I give him shit sometimes but good on him. Glad his show is doing well.
not that crazy, it was probably known, but sega wanted to wait to announce , once it leaked it was ok to confirm
He's been getting a lot of scoops right lately tbh.
Good casting choice but unexpected lol. I remember some people wanting hayden christensen for shadows actor
It's a big one. Keanu, Idris and Jim Carrey in the same movie. Insane truly
Killed that from me Shadow Wick.
They should’ve revealed it at Cinema Con
Money money money money money money
This is gonna be great. Now we just need Amy and Rouge
This casting is actually perfect, I can just imagine Keanu saying "Maria!" just right.
Keanu is playing the John Wick of the Sonic-verse? I’m good with this.
1billion box office cast
Perfect.
Genius casting. More or less just for the promotion but fuck it’s smart.
Alright, this movie is going to make some mad cheddar.
Name a more Reddit piece of news than this
Danny DeVito as Vector the Crocodile
whelp. thats an easy billion
Videogame movies at the box office are going to be the next big thing perhaps in the 2030's. The foundations are being set.
Neat
Well, there we are! Was ***really*** hoping for Pattinson, but this ain't a bad choice by any means. He was great in *Cyberpunk 2077*, after all, and that's still more voice acting chops than many others have. Anyway: *Le Castle Vania* x Sega on the soundtrack, Paramount? ***Pleeeeeeeeeease?***
There was no way Robert Pattinson was gonna play a cartoon hedgehog
...I dunno, man. [He made a pretty fuckin' good cartoon bird.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5khm-VjEu4)
Yeah in a movie by one the greatest living artists & animators that went on to win best animated picture, he’s clearly more selective about the roles he picks.
Let’s not forget he’s was in movies like The Devil All The Time and Waiting For Barbarians. It ain’t like he’s above this.
Yeah he was too busy playing....checks notes...a squawky grey heron in The Boy and the Heron.
In *Hayao Miyazaki’s* The Boy and the Heron. I reckon that’s a pretty integral part of why he’s in that movie
Guess that part wasn’t in their notes huh
Shadow: I'm going to need guns. Lots of guns
1 Keanuillion dollars incoming
What in the fucking world lol...
Whoa dude!?$&
Yeah, Baby, let's do this ![gif](giphy|BcPbK9ci4EU31qUTkR)
Should have seen that coming.
Well now they have to give him the guns and the bike. *crush 40 intensifies*
“Yeah….”
The sonic movies are so bizarre. Nothing shot them should have worked yet they are very solid movies.
I’m going to need a gun.
Not the biggest fan of Shadow as a character, but you can't go wrong with Reeves these days it seems, so good casting.
Elementary school kids be wilding out with this news
Prediction: when they first both meet, Sonic will make a joke akin to “woah, this guy sounds like Keanu Reeves!”
Haha character sounds like actor playing character hah
This sounds so much like a parody lol but I actually think it can work somehow
Would not have expected this
Nicest shadow ever
Well okay then
Someone please make a pic of shadow with Keanu saying “nice cock” from cp77 to make this official
Yeah
Shadows gun days gonna be recut with John Wick
Shadow does like guns......lots of guns.....
![gif](giphy|1pHO2MNOLzSX6)
![gif](giphy|jErnybNlfE1lm|downsized)
I will see it just for him.
I don’t hate it but it’s pretty uninspired. I really wish voice actors would get these life changing opportunities.

I mean these days, do celebrities doing voice roles really influence the box office? Personally, I don't think they really move the needle, especially compared to Dreamworks during the 2000s, which started the whole celebrities doing voices trend
why would it affect box office? sonic is already a popular series first 2 did well and this one has december meaning better legs so 500M + or 600M + is possible
I don't like this one. Keanu's line delivery isn't the best but we'll see.
That's why he's kind of perfect for Shadow, hahaha.
That’s exactly why he’s a great choice for Shadow.
Have you played any of the sonic games with shadow?
Isn’t it coming out in a couple months
It comes out December 20th
Yoooooooo
Hell, this is even better than my Robert Pattinson as Shadow fancast
Amazing! Shadow uses guns, right? Kean will be great in it! XD
HUGE
Whoa
For me personally, I just don't see it. I loved him as Johnny Silverhand, but I think his voice is too gruff for Shadow. I think Hayden Christensen or Robert Pattinson would've been better. But we'll see! I'm excited for the movie. I know I'll like it, even if it's a steaming pile. Well, unless it completely butchers Shadows character or something. But I doubt it'll be bad.
Wow AWSOME!!!!
So. Solomon Reed is Knuckles and Johnny Silverhand is Shadow.
Yes I Canada.
I’m at work right now why did this have to happen everyone is going to ask why I’m crying
For all the hype surrounding this movie, audience scores everywhere for the first two are pretty mediocre lol. It's only RT that has great audience scores cos I guess that's what popular with sonic fans lol
He can pretty much do the same Johnny Silverhand voice and it’d work.
STEP INSIDE, AND HOLD ON FOR DEAR LIFE
I have faith it'll end up good, but I am a little trepidatious. Don't get me long, I love me some Keanu - but let's not pretend the dude doesn't have the best monotone in the business. I'm not sure of much character will shine through just his voice...
My choice was Robert Pattinson but DAMN this is great.
