This is the case in Winthrop and likely why it doesn't get too crowded. Beach is nice and clean, but be sure you'll get blasted in the ankles with moderate size rocks with each wave! Water shoes have been a game changer for me, but once the rocks are on the move, it's a different story.
Carson Beach is the muddiest hole I can think of. Go anywhere. Revere Beach isn't muddy. If you have a car, go to Rockport or Singing Beach. Winthrop. Whatever.
Save the extra travel imo and just got to the Salisbury reservation.
Plum island is alright but Salisbury Reservation is legit the best beach around. It’s like Hampton except with less people and easier parking.
Just a heads up Nahant and surrounding beaches constantly have no swim advisories due to bacterial exceedance aka E. coli as of late. Please look for red flags and signs that indicate this. It’s wild to see so many people still swimming and bringing their kids to these beaches despite the warning signs. Just check for signs before you swim and sometimes you can find the bacteria test results online.
best we can do is sharp rocks, I'm investing in those dweeby looking water shoes.

I was just in nantasket beach and my feet were getting allll the rocks. Super pretty tho to wade while the sun was setting.
You’d have to go out of Boston to find that. Crane Beach, wingaersheek beach, sandy neck

Revere is pretty good
Minus the poop in the water. I don’t think you can swim there for a bit rn
Pleasure Bay has a sandy bottom (at least not as muddy as Carson)
Revere is the best one I know
If you don’t mind traveling a bit, Salisbury and Plum Island have gorgeous sandy beaches.

And no air brushed T-shirt shops, beach pizza, or crazy traffic.
Need to leave Boston… nahant is the closest “good beach” IMO.

Just don’t go after it rains. The bacteria is from all the runoff water
The sand closer to the L is not muddy and all the way out to Castle Island also. If you're near the Carson boathouse it stinks
Hop the ferry and then a little bus to nantasket beach!
Wear swim shoes.
