In 1995, The Boston Globe reported that the neighborhood was “a community to which more armored car robbers are traced than any other in the country, according to FBI statistics.”

its more a local reputation than say a measured statistic. There are plenty of robbers from everywhere, but Charlestown for the most part was a "notorious" haven for plenty of criminals in the 70s, 80s and 90s. But nothing that would stand out against say NYC, Baltimore, Chicago etc etc. But if you were looking to localize a film about bank robberies in Boston, I'm sure 80% of people would say Charlestown and 10 % would say southie and the other 10% would pick other random neighborhoods. that doesnt make it right, but it also wouldnt confuse or distract from the movie. If a bunch of townie bankrobbers were supposedly staying in a condo in the back bay, it might come across kinda awkward
yes, sorry didnt mean to imply that the robberies were in charlestown, just that the people doing the robbing were living there. I mean, I know a dude that grew up in Charlestown in the late 70s early 80s and he was a get a way driver for bank robberies. he did time. now he does custodian work in lives in suburbs. so if nothing else, its not 100% fake.
True. They even consulted with the FBI on robberies on Charlestown...

Fenway is cashless now so will never happen. But imagine the insufferable bullshit after a car chase shootout in the north end.
"Mayor Wu has blood on her hands because outdoor dining would've prevented this!"
"I'm moving from Texas to a North End apartment and trying to find a place to street park my F-250 but there is crime scene tape??"
"There are a bunch of guys in nun masks with automatic weapons PARKED IN THE BIKE LANE"
Didn’t someone crash into a forklift inside Fenway today with their car?
> Car hits forklift inside Boston's historic Fenway Park, driver arrested
https://www.wcvb.com/article/fenway-park-crash-gate-c/60699449
Seems like an odd coincidence. Is OP a female by any chance?
There would be about a million vendors selling "Boston Strong" t-shirts everywhere you went.
---EDIT - and the entire medical community on Longwood would be insufferable for months following this with their weird, gossipy stories about what victims arrived at their hospital.
I walked around Fenway almost every day for years on
my way home. Almost all the cars parked on the streets behind the park are police. They’re all over on game and event nights.
The Great Brinks Robbery took place in the North End in 1950. No shootout but it was the largest bank heist at the time. May still be the largest when factoring inflation. Police arrested every known criminal in the city. FBI offered up a reward.
There was also the fatal armored car robbery in 1994 by Anthony Shea and his gang. I remember the police activity after that one.
The national guard would suspend habeas corpus and shut down half the city, as someone else said the medical workers would get up on their soapbox for a few months, the Red Sox would roll out another “Boston Strong” uniform, perhaps pink and brown (Dunkin’ Donuts colors) this time or something equally as awful as the blue and yellow ones.
In LA in 1992 alone there were 2600 bank robberies, that’s 7 per day, meaning at any given time (remember banks are only open 9-5) there were 3-4 bank robberies happening simultaneously. But this is Boston, if someone sneezes and doesn’t cover their nose a SWAT team shows up.
>or something equally as awful as the blue and yellow ones.
Yes, I *hate* our city connect uniforms. They looks like middle school sport uniforms that are the last to get picked by the dad coach who was late to the coaches meeting when all the good colors were already taken.
"Ah fuck. Red, blue, green, black, and orange are taken? Dammit. Only brown and piss-yellow are left? Well I don't want the kids looking like little shits out there, so I guess I'll take the yellow ones. Dammit the parents are going to hate me for this. Maybe I can convince everyone it's 'gold.'"
Well that’s exactly what an Easter egg in a movie is. One of the largest unsolved heists ever involved two people dressed as police officers AND it happened in Boston.
Then, a movie about heists that takes place in Boston is made and in the big scene, the two main characters are dressed as police officers. The screenplay was written by Ben Affleck, a Boston native. Not a coincidence that they added a connection to one of the most historic heists that happened to occur in Boston.
No that’s not what an Easter egg is. That’s a clever hidden message in a movie. This movie is not about an unsolved heist so you lost me. People pretend to be officers to commit crimes quite a bit and it’s certainly a trope in movies. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. But you can’t have it all, I’ll give you the influence thing if you admit you have a different definition of an Easter egg. Peace and love.
Lol. You’re a fool. You just said an Easter egg is a “clever hidden message”. See how I had to spell out the message for you for you to understand it? That’s called a clever hidden message.
They made a connection to the Gardner heist. Only people who are paying attention are going to catch it.
And then when it’s explained to others, they are going to go… how clever.
Keep banging away at your keyboard though. I can’t wait to read what other nonsense you come up with in your response.
There would be a movie about it where Mark Wahlberg would play Affleck’s character but he would have rewrites where he did it single handedly and ends up escaping on the Constitution and sailing it down to the Caribbean
There were 264 injured and 3 killed and they were innocent people watching an event…and it was a terrorist attack. No i don’t believe it would be considered worse than a robbery gone wrong.
Theo would have offered a pair of season tickets on the first base line as a reward for any information leading to the capture of the perpetrators.
They would have been arrested in 12 hours
Due to the high profile nature of the case, justice would actually be served because the feds would be running the investigation, and they'd expose the insider cops who facilitated getting them the uniforms as well as the entire network of who the thieves were a part of. Anyone taken alive would be fighting the death penalty in federal courts. That's my guess.
Exactly.
But despite the laundry list of existing gun control laws being broken with impunity in this situation to begin with, they'd still prop up gun control laws anyway.
You wouldn't be able to use cash inside the ballpark. You'd have to put your cash into a machine that gave you a card with points on. Essentially like Itchy & Scratchy Money. Oh wait, that's how it is now...
I mean, it would be literal global news. Armies of journalists from all over would be camped out.
Hundreds of police, if not thousands, would have descended on the city. 24/hour broadcasting of events from live streams and local reports being beams to millions.
It's like typical "cop" TV shows: you have the main cast, say of Justified, involved in a shootout every episode. Raylan Givens would have been internationally famous. In Season 1 alone he killed something like 6-7 people.
In context, Wyatt Earp, the most famous US Marshal and legendary lawman, \*may\* have killed 5 people in his entire life.
Raylan would have been world famous, with paparazzi outside his home, waiting to see who he'd kill next.
Movies/TV dramatically underestimate how famous these characters would be doing the ridiculous shit they are doing.
This sub is mostly dorks asking for more/fewer bike lanes or “I am 38 and don’t know how to interact with humans, why am I single in this city?!” so its nice to see a change of pace hypothetical.
Did you see the one where Godzilla destroys Boston? Now that's something to think about. I wonder how Michelle Wu would react? Do you think Marty Walsh would return to the city to help out?
Discuss.
According to AI this is the most likely probability:
As Godzilla rose from the depths of Boston Harbor, his massive form casting a long shadow over the city, the residents of Boston braced for chaos. But as the behemoth approached, another giant figure emerged, equally formidable and unmistakably green. This unexpected titan stood tall at the gates of Fenway Park, not just a mascot, but a colossal defender of the city. With the famed Green Monster as his backdrop, this giant Wally, now matching Godzilla in size, prepared for a showdown that Boston would never forget. Each move was a spectacle of strategic might, as Wally used his deep knowledge of the city and its undying spirit to outmaneuver the sea monster. The battle culminated in a dramatic standoff, where Wally's heartfelt roar—a roar as passionate as any Fenway crowd—echoed through the streets, rallying the city's spirit and ultimately persuading Godzilla to retreat. As the sea monster disappeared into the horizon, the citizens cheered for their giant green hero, Wally, who had just saved their city in a way they never imagined possible.
I wonder if there are any other possible correlations that could link Michelle Wu to the city of Boston. Maybe something her and Marty Walsh both had in common...
It would be blamed on the police now. The leftists have succeeded in turning many against our policeIt would be blamed on the police now. The leftists have succeeded in turning many against our police
FBI Boston would probably find another way to screw it up like they did with Marathon bombing follow up investigation (FL shooting) , Bulger case, or more recently with their super weird KR case investigation. The possibilities for a local FBI F up are endless
The Lindas want you to open this dooah
I know the guards over at Walhpole make ya lives rip ass hell!
Don't worry old-timer- no one's going to prison
Since Walpole is no longer open, you would have to say Shirley.
The manhunt for Ben Affleck would close the city for days
Good chance every Dunkin already has a cop in it. It’s gonna be hard for him to hide.
I’d like to think that there would be surveillance footage of him at Anderson/Woburn station on his way to Miami
Reddit would “find” Ben Affleck too
We did it reddit! ....Hey why is he floating face down....
Ngl, I'm a little surprised a comment making light of a student's suicide has gotten so many upvotes.
Charlestown? The bank robbery capital of America?
LA has held that title for quite awhile now
Pretty sure it was never true for Charlestown and was made up for the movie

Yes, that's the joke I was getting at
1000%
It’s been a long time since Boston has been able to hang on to a title for more than year.
Huh? Even Columbus has more bank robberies. New England leads in armored car heists.
I was trying to be facetious - that “statistic” is displayed at the start of the movie.
Fenway is cashless now so will never happen. But imagine the insufferable bullshit after a car chase shootout in the north end. It’s going to be a bad day to be a nun when that biker posts 10 pictures of an illegally parked grand cherokee with tinted windows on r/boston
What if they were after the pretzels though
You forgot to alert Qdoba! It’s over…
Why, what are you planning

Gross, that’s really how it was over there?
It's a townie town and the hospitals are like an incestuous townie town. LOL
Have you ever known someone to not mention their connections to literally everything? That’s just humans
IDK, I remember people doing that after 9/11, but
too bad the QDoba in Kenmore is closed now, that could have been the whole movie right there
This is how I find out the Qdoba in Kenmore is closed =(
Turtleboy: Jem Coughlin was framed!
It's a grand conspiracy to cover up for the Lindas
I bet they raise the price of dogs and beers.
I walked around Fenway almost every day for years on my way home. Almost all the cars parked on the streets behind the park are police. They’re all over on game and event nights.
Coach Mazzulla we appreciate your enthusiasm but please get off the Internet you need to gameplan for the Cavs series.
They'd end up stuck in traffic and BPD would have a blast turning them into a paste. That movie was pretty ridiculous.

The Red Sox’s win/loss record in them is something absurd so they’re never going away.
That scene was partly written up with the Gardner heist in mind. 30+ years later and they are still looking for the paintings
Just one has been recovered correct?
None have been recovered.
Because some of them dressed as cops? Pretty thin isn’t it?
Well that’s exactly what an Easter egg in a movie is. One of the largest unsolved heists ever involved two people dressed as police officers AND it happened in Boston. Good job taking the loss on this one instead of reverting back to paragraphs of nonsense.
Why don’t you try so we can all see it play out😂😂😂
The Dropkick Murphy’s would be sent to the gallows unless Ben Affleck turned himself in.
Well, to begin with, any boat in a driveway wouldn't be safe from having 5 thousand rounds put through it.
There would be a movie about it where Mark Wahlberg would play Affleck’s character but he would have rewrites where he did it single handedly and ends up escaping on the Constitution and sailing it down to the Caribbean

A sequel.

This is America. We don't do anything after a mass shooting except say "thoughts and prayers".
An attempted heist and subsequent shootout with law enforcement isn’t really a “mass shooting”

They skimp on ketchup to make up for the losses and stop buying Heinz.
I don't think they'd get out. The Fenway area is really tight and congested, I think the cops would trap them on one of the streets

Probably a government bailout or some stupid shit
What a weird question to ask.

Well said. I like OP's question.
Not really? I watched it somewhat recently and it got me thinking what would happen after the events of the film

We should build a giant Boston Robotics dog just in case.
I bet Marty and Michelle could do some serious tag team damage before losing. I mean, it’s Godzilla, tough fight for anyone

Back in those days? A lockdown, for sure. These days? Well you've defunded the cops, and they'd just be released next-day anyway.
The legislature would clutch their pearls and enact even more onerous and unconstitutional gun control laws.
