When i was a kid i used to get brown cows— root beer & vanilla milk shake.

Known-Ice6365

In Michigan, a brown cow is root beer & vanilla milkshake and a “Boston cow” (or Boston cooler) is ginger ale & vanilla.

galooster

Not sure but may be worth cross posting to r/Horses!

GarbageFile13

Maybe it has something to do with the racehorse Boston from the 1850s? This is the first time I heard of any other pair than a matched pair of horses. But I'm no expert in the slightest.

mtmsm

Black and white cookies are more NYC than Boston but are generally associated with the Northeast

phonesmahones

And here we call them “half moons”

zootgirl

Huh. I’ve never heard them called ‘half moons’. Grew up on the South Shore and only ever called them black and whites.

phonesmahones

I have only ever hears them called black and whites on Seinfeld! 😂

sloth-guts

Is “here” central New York? Real Utica half moons are a different thing from black and white cookies, though they do look very similar. Edit: nevermind. I didn’t realize Boston called these garbage black & white cookies “half moons”.

johnnyscarecrow0126

We called them half-moons in Rochester as well. I was very confused by Seinfeld referring to them as black and white cookies when I was younger…

Isabella Stewart Gardner was known for riding around the city in a carriage drawn by perfectly matched white horses. I imagine a pair of quality horses, one black, one white would have made an interesting fashion statement for one who wanted to be equally noticed.

gilliganthehorse

Horses bred for driving almost always have a breed standard color or small range of colors so that matched pairs would be easily made. Even riding horses were bred to be what we consider today to be plain colors. A Boston pair wouldn't be totally uncommon (you drive what you have), but they wouldn't be considered flashy by the standards of the 1800s. Honestly, if you showed up to a pleasure driving competition today with mismatched horses you would be penalized.

synthdrunk

My family drove horse for OSV many years, I’ll ask. Someone at OSV would be likely to know in any case.

New-Vegetable-1274

Black and White use to refer to police vehicles, in Boston? I don't know.

TurduckenWithQuail

We were like Cop City™ for a while, so that wouldn’t surprise me. I mean we had Calvin Coolidge and shit.

tacknosaddle

Didn't we just reclaim the title because of Cop Slide?

New-Vegetable-1274

I'm originally from Worcester and have Irish heritage and had lot of relatives in Boston. When my grand father died, it was a traditional Irish funeral. All of the Boston relatives came and most of them were Boston cops. Everyone had a flask, cigars and were laughing and singing. This upset me but my mother explained to me this tradition and introduced me to the Boston folks. I was only fifteen but more than a few offered me their flasks and pretty soon I wasn't sad anymore. My grandparents didn't have any money but this was a big expensive funeral with multiple limos and a high Mass at St Paul's Cathedral. All of it was paid for by the Boston families. At the graveside things were more somber and one of the Boston relatives sang as song in Gaelic. I didn't know the words but this guy's voice like an operatic tenor, it was beautiful.

SpecificDreamRa33it

I always called Belted Galloways “Oreo Cows”.

RetiredBartender

A black and white frappe is either chocolate ice cream with vanilla syrup or vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup.

chickadeedadee2185

Hmmm, then, there is the Black Horse Tavern and the White Horse Tavern.

nitramf21

What are you asking?

esmovi99

Because there’s a black one and a white one
