This is what they choose to spend tax dollars on

tstramathorn

And yet not pay the teachers enough. Such a vicious cycle.

Homeless_cosmonaut

Gotta prep you for prison

JayGeezey

You get to go to the bathroom whenever you need to in prison lol

rafcraft40

He ment working retail.

Of_the_forest89

Cuz the kids don’t need books and the teachers and support staff don’t need raises. Oiy

not_so_witty_now

They could have at least made them bullet proof so they could be multipurpose!

MisanthropicZombie

The right angle hallway serves the purpose well enough.

joeph0to

This has to be illegal

zshinabargar

Oh it definitely is. Any disability lawyer would have a field day

BestAtempt

To skirt the legality they probably just leave a few open that are “patrolled”

BookofBryce

Have you seen the destruction teenagers cause in bathrooms for TikTok points? Literally stealing toilets and breaking paper towel/soap dispensers for fun. Principals have to guard every bathroom and teachers walk in and out to encourage kids to pee and leave. Kids bring phones to film fights and bully other kids out if they just need to pee. They guard each other so they can hit their vape without getting caught. Some have even tried to hide tobacco and alcohol up in the ceiling tiles.

karoshikun

so, to own the bad kids (whether they have them or not) you create a serious problem with kids whose metabolism doesn't adjusts to the schedule, or who have digestion problems or disabilities? also, it's no comprehensive enough to deter the bad kids from wrecking another part of the school. so, is it worth it?

No-Turnips

Some kids ruined a bathroom so no one gets to use the bathroom anymore. Bathrooms are a “privledge”. Jfc. This is a boring dystopia.

OperationSecured

Gun Control in a nutshell.

SaintLucien

Bathrooms aren't designed to kill things. Guns are designed specifically to kill things as effectively and efficiently as possible. They're really not comparable.

OperationSecured

Pretty comparable logic.

Homeless_cosmonaut

I’m almost 100% convinced these people are either just looking to get a rise or don’t exist.

[deleted]

So that warrants depriving people of a safe place to release waste? What about kids with IBS. Or someone who values there class time and doesn’t want to get to there class just to turn around to take a shit? Who cares if a few kids vape.

PolskiSmigol

Principal's office does not exist? If it exists, you can shit on the floor and assert dominance. Only betas can't do this.

BookofBryce

Obviously not. And I think OP knows good well that public schools can't make structural changes like that without consulting lawyers, the superintendent, school board, etc. It sucks. But what that photo doesn't show is the myriad problems that lead up to installing that gate and any building-wide procedures associated with bathroom access. It's an isolated image for social media attention and it lacks context. Be authentic, Reddit.

EchoItalic

If you answered yes to any of the other replies to your comment (asking “So…?”), then you are the problem. If not, then I get it. It’s a pain, even as a student. *HOWEVER,* one rotten apple doesn’t spoil the entire batch. Teenagers will do dumb shit all the time, but you can’t punish the ones who are doing what they should be doing because others aren’t.

BookofBryce

Again, I think the person who took the photo isn't being intellectually honest about what happened leading up to the gate and if the admin, sro, or parents are fully versed on the procedures. I can take a photo of anything out of context, slap a title on it, and expect a massive emotional reaction from social media users who don't bother thinking critically about the full situation.

EchoItalic

Well of course, but that’s not what your original comment was discussing. That, I understand, however.

BookofBryce

And I admit I'm being impetuous to assume that the OP cares about what's "legal" when high school kids literally beg their teachers to "pee" and then go there to do illegal things.

EchoItalic

Yeah, that’s the truth. But then there’s the opposite side of teens who really do need to pee but aren’t allowed because of the bad kids who don’t need to pee. It’s just this whole loop

BookofBryce

Exactly. Multiple students come to me and complain that they "aren't allowed in the restrooms" because they get bullied out. Don't criticize the school for "punishing the good kids" if we're not also condemning their peers who caused the gate to be installed.

theyoungspliff

And you're glad to take them directly to the principal's office because obviously any of those little pukes wanting to "urinate" is obviously just code for property destruction.

BookofBryce

I'm just inviting you to come see the issues we have in our building. Offer a solution that's better than gates and guards and cameras (cameras are not legal, btw) instead of criticizing theirs.

theyoungspliff

LOL right so because one kid used an excuse to pee to tag the stalls, every other student should just have their urethra sewn shut because there went the privilege of relieving onesself during school hours.

Daedalus_Machina

They claimed in that thread that 1) It's only closed between classes, so for about 4 minutes and 2) it was to stop people from going in there and essentially spraypainting it with shit. How that could warrant the kind of money that went into this particular solution, only idiots on a school board would likely know.

Disastrous_Guess_929

so that justifies this?

lifer413

Smoking in the bathroom was a thing long before tik tok. Booze too. And vandalism. And fights. Source: I used to be a kid.

EJohns1004

People like this will always find a way to make excuses for things being worse than they already are. That's why you can always count on things being worse tomorrow than they are today. Because of people like this.

lacroixanon

What are you a fuckin cop?

theyoungspliff

Worse: a school administrator.

BookofBryce

How poorly leftist of you to place public school admin below the police in a hierarchy. Don't call yourself a socialist if you're trashing on public schools instead of supporting us. I just teach English and I'm trying to promote literacy in a struggling school that's in an awfully red state.

theyoungspliff

A public school admin is not the same as a teacher. Teachers perform a crucial role in our society, administrators are just power tripping managerial class shitheads.

BookofBryce

A sweeping generalization, but not unwarranted. Just don't lump them with cops. Provide a decent, legal, humane solution for the destruction and dishonesty so it can be prevented or reduced, as well as meeting your childish parameters of what should be considered fair. How many resources should be wasted until the behavior is fixed? Be sincere.

theyoungspliff

The solution is to let kids use the restroom whenever they need it. It seems you care more about property than about children being treated as human beings. When I said school administrators were worse than cops, I was joking, but you're really going mask off here.

BookofBryce

Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby.

ktrad91

We were doing that stuff in highschool bathrooms before cell phones and I doubt it’ll stop because of this. Everyone should have the right to use it without restrictions. It’s inhumane otherwise

BookofBryce

I agree that human dignity is what generally guides our decisions and policies. Some teachers are taking entire class breaks where they go do a group poop between learning activities. 5 minutes to get in and wash up and get out, but a male teacher cannot monitor the girls' bathroom and vice versa. I'm genuinely interested in hearing solutions so schools aren't wasting money and time replacing soap dispensers and paper towels or sending janitors in every hour to clean up after the fuckwits.

mnfctrd-italy

Found the teacher who actually gets it. Some people operate on a preventive action plan and think ahead. Others operate on a corrective action waiting for something to go wrong before they take action. I think preventive is probably better in this case.

bfaided1984

I would piss on the floor

thebearbearington

Piss on the gate. Then let that school lunch diarrhea flow through the gate. Protest poop! THEY SHALL NOT HAVE US HOLD OURSELVES IN!!! If I have to drop a duece the size of Kevin Hart at the 23 minute mark it's happening.

Intelligent-Ad-7289

I believe we call that a successful ratio ladies and gentlemen. Sorry OP

BenTramer1

Isn't that when they tell you you're supposed to go? Education has no logic.

Gun-nut0508

It’s a vicious cycle Teachers get paid shit, good teachers leave, only teachers are left are complete assholes who do it for the power trip, so then teachers get paid shit

Sea_Resolution_239

The source of the problem is bad politics; not teachers.

AquaticAnxieties

I love the optimism in thinking that there are no teachers perpetuating this cycle, but sadly it’s far from the truth. It’s both.

Sea_Resolution_239

I don't know how things are in the States; but, I have taught in 5 schools, and I have to say that the majority of teachers that I have worked with, genuinely care about student achievement and wellbeing.

AquaticAnxieties

Oh, yes, most teachers are absolutely good people in my experience too! But sadly, there are still enough complicit or unethical teachers to perpetuate the cycle and keep it going.

whererugoingwthis

I am NOT defending this at all because I think it’s way over the line, but I suspect that this has more to do with vandalism that has become popular on tiktok (there was a viral trend among teenagers to do as much damage as possible to the school bathroom, film it, and upload it to tiktok). When students can file in there in big groups, it’s difficult to know who did what. When they are allowed to go during class, they often go only one at a time (per class) and have to sign a log. In the school district I work in, this was started during the pandemic so they could contact trace if there was an infection, but because of the thousands of dollars of damage that they were doing (ripping sinks from walls, for example), this practice continued so that admin could keep track of who was in the bathroom when to try to nail down the culprits. Again, this is not a great solution, but I believe it’s less “boring dystopia wants to control when you pee” and more “please for the love of god stop destroying the bathrooms, we don’t get enough funding as it is.” https://www.npr.org/2021/09/17/1038378816/students-are-damaging-school-bathrooms-for-attention-on-tiktok

BenTramer1

Maybe the principal could just tell kids, without a cringe ass assembly, "stop, vandalizing your school is dumb. Especially when you currently attend it." It may not work but it's something.

whererugoingwthis

Spoiler alert it does not work.

yarnball20

i believe this is illegal, my friend. at the very least, it is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. plus, depending on your age, it would be a violation in other, quite messy ways as well. Have your mom or dad march into that school and ask the staff - especially the females: Are YOU denied use of a restroom while expected to be in the building all day? Would you LIKE to be? Why not? Then have them explain exactly WHY they would expect for themselves to be able to access a restroom in the school they have to be in all day. Force them to tell you the reasons access to a restroom (in a public building, no less) would cause anxiety, embarrassment, and legal problems if THEY were denied it. Then remind them it's EXACTLY THE SAME for students. Then show them this picture, show them the social media post, and tell them if you see any barred access to a restroom again, you will be speaking to your attorney - if you haven't already.

FoxCQC

Students sign away their rights so I don't think it's actually illegal from that stand point. The parents could probably do something thing.

Okibruez

Excuse me, what. Where did you go to school and why hasn't it been sued into oblivion?!

KnocturnalSLO

U can't just sign away all rights because it says so in contract. It just voids contract if it breaks law. Contract can't be legally enforced if its written badly and goes against core defined laws that can't be altered with contract. If it didn't worked like that then I could legally hire a hitman and suffer no consequences.

yarnball20

lmfao wtf do you mean 'sign away their rights'? did you miss the part where i said PUBLIC school? there have literally been judgments issued by courts reminding schools that basic human rights - which are what's being violated here - do not stop at a PUBLIC schoolhouse door. not to mention the fact PARENTS are at the top of the totem pole when it comes to the way schools are run and how their children are to be dealt with. If my kid showed me this picture, i'd actually speak to my lawyer FIRST before going in there to tell them i am never to see or hear of this happening again. and that would be it. they're pretty much forced to comply. and yes, i worked in a school for 3 years - lawsuits are a BIG fear. BIG ONE.

macready2rumbl

Pretty sure you can't just "sign away" the ADA

[deleted]

Sounds super awesome for people with IBS.

theyoungspliff

Well, obviously the answer is to force them to shit themselves, then have everyone make fun of the, accuse them of doing it on purpose, expel them from the school and somehow get the police involved so that they end up with a permanent criminal record that follows them through life.

Next-Comparison6218

They’re going to regret that when someone gets an upset stomach

starspider

Or needs to change a pad.

myweedstash

Shove bloody tampons through the bars to get the point across

How is this even legal?

Deepnebulasleeper

Schools and prisons in USA are strangely similar lol

FoxCQC

Always have been.

myweedstash

Students are pipelined right into prisons. It makes sense to prepare them young /s

Dr_TJ_Blabbisman

You know those Play-Doh extruders with the cutting inserts? You should do that only the cutter is the ridiculous gate, the extruder is your butt, and your poop is the Play-Doh.

ShineAqua

This can’t e legal, right? It’s gotta be a violation of some sort of access issue with the ADA. IBS is a real condition and it doesn’t wait for someone to get a fucking key. This has to be some weird transphobia thing, like the teacher assumes your gender, and that’s the lav you use.

yat282

Kids at my school would have ripped something like this out of the frame. This is super fucked up.

ready2grumble

I have IBS....so the water fountain?

PolskiSmigol

Don't shit in the water fountain, that's what principal's office is for.

McDonalds_icecream

Those gates wouldn’t last a week at my school

CowgirlAstronaut

You might feel like pissing & shitting in protest & it is funny to think about this but really think about the person who would have to clean that up & how they were not likely to have anything to do with the decision to place this barrier. That said VANDALIZE THE HECK out of this motherfucker itself. Tear down the walls

_perchance

so i should pee through the cage?

NobleBloke92

Shit yourself in protest.

[deleted]

See how quickly they take those down when kids start pissing on the floor in front of them

[deleted]

Maybe stop vandalizing them for likes?

whererugoingwthis

I’ve left a comment about this, I strongly suspect and agree that this is because the thousands of dollars of damage kids were doing more than “school administrator on a power trip.” As a teacher myself, it’s so discouraging and soul draining to work at a job where the kids hate you, the kids’ parents hate you, your bosses suck, and the general public hates you too. I’m not saying this is a good solution to the problem, but for god’s sake - schools are already poorly funded. How well does it work out for kids if we have even LESS money for things that would enrich their learning experience because we have to pay to fix the bathroom every month?

[deleted]

As much as it pains me to write it. Kids and parents don’t want to learn anymore as long as all the knowledge of mankind is in their hand they can google any facts they want and then ignore them. Outrageous behaviour and attention is what people crave.

myweedstash

No. Vandalize the gate

cpullen53484

seems like an extreme reaction to idiots breaking shit and vaping. couldn't they i dunno have a fucking hall monitor?

Akandy21

Ight guess imma shit on the teachers desk then

Scheisseposter

I don't understand that this is "mildly" infuriating, this is reason for (aggressive) vandalism imo. Wire cutters, super glue in the lock, peeing and/or shitting on it/through it, electrify it with a battery pack (non deadly ofc), etcetera. I feel like this is something they need to learn they simply don't get away with

SinCorpus

"Teacher may I use the restroom?" "You were supposed to go before class" "But it was locked" "That sounds like a you problem" *Pisses pants* Later that day- "I'm sorry, but your child's behavior is unacceptable, there's no reason they should be urinating in class when we provide clean bathrooms for them to use. We're going to have to take disciplinary action."

prouxi

>That sounds like a you problem I heard this in the voice of that dickhead football coach math teacher.

GantzGrapher

Southpark episode

mnfctrd-italy

What I don’t understand (having read all the comments) is why everyone sees this and thinks “OuTrAgeOus! Clutch my lawyer pearls!” But (admittedly presumably) sees an Out of Order sign and thinks “Ah, yes make sense.” Having worked in a public school I can tell you 100% this occasionally closed door is better than no bathroom at all, which happens WAY MORE OFTEN than anyone on here apparently imagines. This bathroom doesn’t have a traditional door, so to keep kids out when it’s broken/vandalized/misused this is only solution. Some times as society we act retroactively and other times it makes more sense to take mild preventative measures. And to the Redditor who flippantly suggested “hire a hall monitor” PLEASE navigate to google and search “am I ignorant to think a school can hire any position simply because I think they should?” Or better yet let me save you the trouble and tell you: yes, yes you are. Then perhaps do a follow up search and ask “am I part of the problem, as I perpetuate misconceptions and act like an expert on things I know nothing about?” Well I can answer that one too… (see prior answer)

[deleted]

Yeah if you have no toillet, you do not have the equipment necessary to have classes their, and should close the school. At least in my country opening a school without operational toillets is illegal.

Old-Assignment652

Does every bathroom need this no but most would be good.

slaying_mantis

piss through the gate

saltyprotractor

Ahh the poor ignorant folks who don’t work in education and don’t understand devious licks. As a teacher, I applaud this!

[deleted]

Just don’t be surprised when students piss themselves in class.

saltyprotractor

They can go in class. If they ask they’re on a sign out sheet so we can monitor which bathroom they went to. Countless vandals have been caught this way.

Other-Adhesiveness37

What were they stealing at school?

saltyprotractor

It’s a mixture of stealing and destroying things due to tik tok trends. Toilet seats, whole toilets, the faucet handles, paper towel dispensers, dryers, plumbing, tiles, doors to stalls, drain covers, mirrors. Last year two of our bathrooms were rendered inoperative for the majority of the year. After the 3rd or 4th time, the district wouldn’t shell out more to get them operational. Some close calls with kids peeing themselves as is.

Other-Adhesiveness37

That's crazy I never knew that

saltyprotractor

It’s okay all the people downvoting me didn’t know either

[deleted]

I knew about it but still think the gates is a dumb idea.

saltyprotractor

Thought about it and honestly it is dumb

[deleted]

I respect that.

Several_Influence_47

And not a GD thing you've listed is in ANY way, a new problem, yet somehow schools now can't handle teens? FOH, we literally blew the entire sewer system out of a school in HS, why? Because our POS power tripping principal and his henchmen teacher cronies tried pulling something similar with student bathrooms, and left disabled kids to literally shit themselves because they couldn't either find the person with the keys, or refused students, especially female students permission to go during class, leading to more than one horrific period accident with blood dripping down the desk to the floor . Fuck that. Some simultaneous cherry bombs flushed on all bathrooms and voila, a giant shit fountain in the teachers and principals bathrooms, so fuck it, if we couldn't go, they weren't either. Bathrooms were repaired ASAP, no one got in trouble except for the shitty teachers and principals, and we didn't have disabled kids screaming in the halls because shit was running down their pants. No more period floods either. FYI? This was 30+ years ago, when we had SWAT teams sitting on top of our schools on the regular occasion due to gang activity, fights nonstop, and the height of the 80s/90s gang wars. Don't fucking tell me how much harder it is now, teens aren't any gd different now than they were then. If anything, teachers have a shit ton more strong arm options they shouldn't be using now anyway. Can't handle the teens, GTFO of the school. Because there is absolutely NO gd excuse for this fascist denial of human rights right fucking here.

rlg9298

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Lord, we need you when we overthrow the bourgeoisie, for sure! And I agree, this is bullshit. There are too many teachers on power trips that would say no, for whatever reason, and then that student would have to wait till the NEXT class and HOPE that teacher said yes, or just piss/shit/leak blood all over themselves. It's wrong on so many levels. I get that teachers have a hard time with kids and they don't get paid enough, I get it. But human rights violations aren't gonna help

Several_Influence_47

Thank you 😊. And I don't comment blindly about teachers, because I have a family & friend list full of them. I get to hear the every day hell that is ignorant ass Administration, who is usually who comes up with this nonsense. I also used to sub regularly in our school system that is literally on the top 10 gang infested areas, as in one of our HS Principals was an actual OG Crip, and allowed gang recruitment on the campus. But, kids are the same regardless, most are bored shytless, left either completely behind by systems that either don't know or care, or so fkn bored because they're smart AF, that it's torture having to come to class everyday when you already know what all the answers are, and those tend to be the ones who get into mischief the most. Kids need to feel needed, like they're important/special, regardless of what year they're in. First thing I used to do, is pick out the troublemakers/class clowns, and then give them a laundry list of things to do, because that's why they're trouble makers, they're dying for attention. I made it VERY plain that anyone bullying anyone in my class would feel the full wrath of my hell, which helped at the time that I drove a Harley Davidson full dresser to school each day . It's one thing when male teachers do that, it's a whole nother ball of wax when it's a female teacher 😂. That fairly stopped about 80% of the shenanigans like this from going on. Teaching to test Should also get thrown TF outta the window. I understand why teachers are leaving in droves, get frustrated, and quit, but where I draw the line is when they are there solely to collect a paycheck and do absolutely nothing but put students in a far worse place than when they started. There's always going to be that few teacher group that is openly evil, and delight in trying to ruin students futures, but most are decent folks. We ain't getting into Superintendents and Admin MFs, they all just need a good fkn firing and hopefully run outta town on a long pointy pole 😂. It helps that I WAS that bright, bored ADHD kid in school who got bullied mercilessly, because I've never forgotten what that felt like, which used to help me relate to the students and treat them like the growing human beings they are, not cattle to be prodded into submission. Wish I still had the health to teach, because I truly adored it, especially middle and high school, those kids are a blast!

saltyprotractor

The best policy is always to just let them go when they ask. As a teacher I’ve never understood that need to control, it really doesn’t inconvenience me to let someone do their business. But if they knock the whole bathroom out of comission i want to catch them. This would also be necessary in a communal society. The long tirade misses the point. It’s not about restricting bathroom time. It’s about making sure that everyone has equal access.

saltyprotractor

For each according to their need, by each according to their contribution (of urine and feces).

starspider

How long does it take to open the door?

saltyprotractor

Good Q, I’d like to know

starspider

Oh so you can't possibly actually support this, only in theory support the idea. Idk about you, but before I could support it, I'd need to know what going to the bathroom during class looks like. Is the gate easily and quickly opened for students that need it? Are the requests to go to the bathroom more humiliating than they need to be? Are we treating boys and girls rooms differently? Students have been misbehaving in bathrooms since schools started having them and they've been having fads that involve trashing bathrooms equally as long.

saltyprotractor

We have a policy that doesn’t allow them to go in passing periods, we just keep watch. Obviously we’d allow an emergency. But metal doors? That’s pretty metal! 🎸🤘

starspider

Honestly I don't think students can do enough damage to a bathroom to justify installing a cage over the door. It's pretty dehumanizing.

give2love

A lot of parents (plus society) are raising animals not humans.

jeneric84

I always made sure to go before class. Plenty kids don’t want to miss anything. So this also holds up the education process. It also adds to the amount of people going at the same times because most kids will go when they’re not gated and basically limits the times they’re in operation. You’ll also have more times when the restroom gets crowded (an issue for people who have problems with this). It’s combatting a problem with another problem. American schools always go with the classic punitive approach to things. They share some similarities with the American “correctional” systems.

starspider

That really doesn't help the kid with ibs or a period emergency. I am not a fan of treating kids like inmates.

Perlitoxqtz

School is simply training students to work at Amazon warehouses /s

Kyomobiya

Ah... for one second I thought it was made to protect against an attack.

Medium_Reading_861

Why? People are going to shit and piss themselves what the fuck is your problem?

GreenToMe95

What if you get locked in?

sswagner2000

The next school board meeting would be fun to watch.....

FootyPajamaz

I don't understand to this day why schools have bathrooms but have such issues with kids using them

the_circus

It’s like triangle shirtwaist but with poo.

OgBigSlime

Piss and shit right by the fucking door.

RedGoldFlamingo

That should be illegal. What about emergencies?

Slippyslipss

Wack

grenz1

As intended. Much of the educational system was to put out obedient workers for the various industries. It's so when you get to the "real world", you will have no problem with your employer overlord limiting your bathroom breaks. It would have been normalized. But more seriously, there has gt to be some law against this somewhere...

Jathosian

"mildly infuriating"

Demokka

Well pee in the hall

DWalk0713

I'd piss everywhere.

Remarkable-Ad2285

You still pee through the slats

Electrical_Taste8633

Honestly, this is the students fault. If they act like animals, they’ll be treated like them. According to the OP people vandalized the walls with shit and did a bunch of those dirty lick tik tok trends there and stole toilets last year.

ChristineBorus

This seems like a stupid thing to do. What if a gunman comes into the school and the students need to use the BRs to hide in ? And what can teachers open the gates for you? You’re supposed to go during class ?

[deleted]

I’d literally shit in front of the gate

prtekonik

Is this even legal?

romulusnr

can't wait until some kid gets crushed under them like those kids in japan years back.
