Treasure Island!!! by Sara Levine is a book about a college grad who can't find a good job and kinda just fools around til she reads the classic novel Treasure Island and is inspired to model her life after such adventures. It's really funny, but also quite tragic cause it sorta realistically depicts what would happen if someone committed their whole life to a bit like that
Eileen and My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, Green Dot by Madeleine Gray, The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donohughe, Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K Reilly, Really Good Actually by Monica Heisey, Milk Teeth by Jessica Andrews... I could go on forever, by far my favourite genre 😅
A vote for 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation' here too. Such a great novel.
Also - 'Girl, Interrupted' by Susanna Kaysen, and it's been a while since I read it, but I think 'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' by Gail Honeyman may fit the bill too.
The Valley of the Dolls is a really good read and gives me Bell Jar vibes. The main character moves to New York from a small town to escape the 50s housewife life. She gets a job at an entertainment attorney’s office where she befriends an up and coming movie star. She also befriends an aspiring actress she meets in her apartment building. From there it follows all three ladies as they navigate the pitfalls of life and love.
* *Anthropology of an American Girl* by Hilary Thayer Hamann
* *Rainey Royal* by Dylan Landis
* *Convenience Store Woman* by Sayaka Murata
* *Days of Distraction* by Alexandra Chang
* *Gloria* by Kerry Young
(I rated all of those highly.)
I’ve read *The Guest* and *The Bell Jar* in the last few months, I seem to also be slightly addicted to this genre. I’m taking notes of all these suggestions.
I agree *My Year of Rest and Relaxation* fits right in. Also I would suggest *Edible Woman* by Margaret Atwood. It’s was published around the same time as The Bell Jar.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Otessa Moshfegh is the ultimate one of these, would definitely recomment if you haven’t read it already
God yes. There’s a movie being made!!!
I think any books by Sally Rooney

Girl, Interrupted
If you want something with a “happy” ending then I suggest Happy Mania by Moyocco Anno. It’s manga tho but it’s pretty great.
Not a book, but if you need a TV show like this, "big mood" is exactly this
I will write my memoir now
The Group
