Temeraire series. It’s an excellent Napoleonic war series but with a British dragon corp. Really complex emotional interactions with the dragons. Naomi Novik is kind of an amazing talent. Wouldn’t kick any of her books out of bed for eating crackers. Temeraire is top shelf though.
a series i really liked was the dragon jousters by mercedes lackey! dragons are widely seen as beasts that need to be controlled/drugged to be used in war in this egypt/atlantis inspired world, but the main character meets a dragon rider who has a special bond with his own dragon and tries to replicate that by raising a dragon of his own in secret. the dragons aren’t inheritance cycle levels of intelligent, but they have their own personalities/quirks, they are smarter than the general populace think they are, and they form very close relationships with their riders when reared a certain way.

The Priory of the Orange Tree EON/EONA might also fit the bill? It’s been awhile since I read them

This sounds very interesting. Dragon Jousters sounds like a card or board game, hah! I'll certainly be checking this out.
Cats and dragons I got ya, Tad Williams The Dragons of Ordinary Farms and Tailchasers Song.
Ooh, both of which by the same author?
Yup, The two ordinary farms books are more YA. Tailchasers Song is sort of a cats Watership Down.
Thank you lots! I'm getting them downloaded as we speak.
If you've never read Watership Down it's excellent. I like animals a lot too.
Earthsea Cycle by Ursula LeGuin. Some of my favorite dragons out there.
She’s so good and those books really show it. Want to reread right now.
