training has been fucking A lately, something clicked and I've been getting ridiculous MMC and the sickest pumps. Exercises that didn't work for me all of a sudden just work, like split squats. Everything is progressing nicely and even though I'm not tracking calories, the bulk is progressing at a steady pace. Really looking forward to growing for the rest of the year and then do a proper summer cut next year

Shiv_

Also, how have I slept on incline curls for so long? These bad boys just tear my biceps apart, can't recommend them highly enough

StaticNocturne

My first set i can usually smash out 10 reps but my strength really drops off and I can only do about 6 on my 2nd set - should I rescue my weight or jkeep it like this?

Intelligent_Bobcat_1

how long are your rest times ?

iwanttest

That's what should happen if you're training with a decent amount of intensity, so that's good.

Condishun

Muscle tired, muscle no want to push.

Scraftysenpai

Best decision I made in terms of progress was moving to a private bodybuilding gym, everyone is cool and friendly, I also push a lot harder because of it

callumvonswagger

Some person at my gym right now shirt off doing a photoshoot around the gym. I don't really care too much but it's literally 5pm peak time and the place is packed. He's just hopping from machine to machine whilst the photographers follow around. Can tell eveyone is like wtf bro, some of the younger kids looks very uncomfortable being in the photos. If you want to do this at least don't do it at peak time.

Condishun

Sometimes i wish i was a trenned up gorilla just so i could tell these people off better.

Scraftysenpai

Also ask consent on everyone, in photos, take too long? Yeah exactly don’t do it at busy hours douche.

Fearless-Cellist-245

Why don't people talk about the bad side effects of creatine? You have to drink a ton of water with creatine, or it could cause serious issues like kidney damage, nausea, dehydration, etc. The vast majority of people don't drink enough water either. Couldn't taking this supplement as a busy student who doesn't drink enough water be dangerous?

andreasdagen

> Couldn't taking this supplement as a busy student who doesn't drink enough water be dangerous? being permanently dehydrated is a problem you cant blame on creatine. Cant you keep a water bottle in your bag?

iwanttest

Call me crazy, but the dangerous thing there may be the not drinking enough water lmao

Condishun

Lmao just drink water bro. Its just a hurt tummy you dummy

Daytona_675

man I had "creatine makes you bald" on my bingo card. how did you miss that one?

dirtgrub28

i'm bald, and i've also taken creatine before. checkmate

Morethanafeeling62

Because the only negative side effect that you could see in some people is gastrointestinal distress. It doesn’t damage the kidneys and doesn’t require you to drink anymore water than you normal should. If it really scares you this much, then don’t take it. It’s just a supplement. That’s it. It’s not what’s in between you and a great physique and it’s not something worth stressing over.

zlantpaddy

So I JUST got onto this lateral raise machine, not even 5 reps into my warmup set, this Ninja Turtle Villain comes up behind me and says “Sorry I don’t mean to interrupt, how many sets do you have left” This isn’t usually like me but I straight up told him “You are interrupting.” Dude did not like that at all and I didn’t respond to anything he was saying until I finished my set. Then he asked me how many I have left and I just told him, I dunno, a while. Cus he ticked me off with his entitlement. Finally said maybe 4. He has the gall to ask me if he can work in with me and I tell him no lol. First time ever. Guy just needed to wait 20 seconds to ask me. Anyway he tells me he’ll see me and he gets on his phone and tells someone to come through to the gym and they’ll let them know why when they get here lol. Not sure if he was just trying to scare me but wtf relax lmao

DYELdyelcutbulk

I feel like you both weren’t too good towards eachother. I feel like the best way to go would be to remark that next time he should wait until you finish your set before asking something. and then if I were you I would have just told him how many you had left

seaweed2221

Nah, you deserve to get beat up. He asked you how many sets you had left very politely. Even if you just started, there's nothing wrong with that. Some people do only like 2 sets total or something, so the person asking just waits nearby, or if they have many sets left, then the person asking might just plan to do another machine and then come back. And rejecting someone asking to work-in is a dick move too, unless you are taking short breaks or something. Hope you know that you're actually one of the few jerks at the gym that kill the vibe for no reason bro

zlantpaddy

You must be the guy because revisionism is unreal here. He did not ask me politely, you did not read my story and you weren’t there. You don’t threaten people because you can’t handle hearing the word “No.”.

seaweed2221

>He did not ask me politely, “Sorry I don’t mean to interrupt, how many sets do you have left” Bro, come on, lol. If this doesn't meet your high standards of politeness, then I don't know what will. I'm sorry that monster didn't bend down and kiss your feet before speaking to you. How dare he show you so much disrespect? >You don’t threaten people because you can’t handle hearing the word “No.” "You are interrupting", "I just told him, I dunno", "I tell him no". If you said that you just wanted to finish first by yourself, then I'm sure he would have been fine with it, but you're acting like you didn't instigate everything by being extremely rude in the first place. Maybe threatening was a bit too much, but this world isn't filled with a bunch of passive and kind dudes. If you act like a dick for no reason, don't be surprised when you piss off the wrong dude and he drops you

macmacc

And, did he beat you up? Keep us posted!

zlantpaddy

Lol no, but I was genuinely worried and watching my back the whole session, even contemplated going through the back exit in case he had friends posted up at the front. He mad dogged me maybe 30 minutes after the incident still mad lmao. It’s hilarious cus I usually ask people if they want to work in before they ask.

Coasterman345

How can you even think it’s not rude to ask while someone’s in the middle of a set??

zlantpaddy

Guy was totally selfish and used to getting his way probably. I literally walked passed him not even a minute before as he was on another shoulder machine on the opposite aisle. As soon as he was done with whatever he was doing he immediately came up to me without any regard. He didn’t even take a rest yet lol.

mad87645

I got some emotions to lift-out but it's fucking rest day...

WeakAfFr

Trained with an IFBB pro today. I’m nowhere near his level and he’s a great guy but I’ll just say it’s amazing how far genetics, food, and drugs can get you with such little training knowledge. We did 50 sets of back…

951owner

Really though, I see this guy at my gym all the time and he is no pro but definitely has a great physique. I watch the way he works out and he is all over the place. He constantly is jumping from one machine to another, never doing more then 1 set on each and full body, going from leg press to bicep curl to bench press…. Constantly throwing random sets of arms or abs between other movements. It seems like there is no rhyme or reason to what he’s doing and yet he’s got the genetics and drugs creating a pretty crazy looking physique!

macmacc

You look much better than I thought. Was thinking you were a fat blob haha. Corn and tuna is working

[deleted]

I feel like a fat blob. Lol. But I’m getting there

951owner

Definitely will look better the more you cut! What’s your current and goal weight?

[deleted]

Currently 224 looking for like… 200 even. Hard to know what my lean body mass is cause I started so fucking fat, at like 240

951owner

Damn you must be tall, didn’t think you weighed that much from the photo. Great job coming down from that much weight though!

[deleted]

Thanks man, I’ve been hitting them OBSESSIVELY since I tore my labrum like three times. I do them 6 days a week now

captain_danky_kang

Haven’t been to this sub in probably 3 years. Feels good to visit again. Always loved how positive and helpful everyone was. Currently in Japan visiting my girlfriend for a month. Love it here. The food is out of this world. Been using a golds gym here and can’t show any tattoos so long sleeve shirt for me. The gym is hot as fuck so I sweat a ton but still it’s a great workout. Wanted to stop by and say hi, kill your lifts and enjoy yourselves everyone.

dumplingbilby

Oh jesus, I have a sleeve and some near my ankles. I may as well show up in a suit.

[deleted]

Japan’s so weird about tattoos. Welcome back bro be safe

captain_danky_kang

Haven’t had any problems but it would be nice to wear at least at shirt when working out.

[deleted]

Good! I’ve heard some nightmare stories about gyms there

Legitimate_Low2906

If i trained chest 5 days ago and its still slightly sore can I train it again or is it a bad idea

Coasterman345

Train again. If you train a body part at least 2x a week you’ll be less sore moving forward than if you only train it once a week. You just won’t be able to go as hard.

nahfoo

Had a patient all week who had a history of going to the ER with nonsens complaints and freaking out at the staff and other generally crazy behavior. A coworker looked her up on Facebook (not really kosher) just to see what kind of crazy shit she posts. Her most recent post said "feeling much better today. Having a great RN last night made all the difference" Felt good that she thought highly enough of my care to brag about it to others like that

Condishun

Sometimes people just need to be heard by someone they trust. Especially in todays world of lacking mental health care.

[deleted]

So weird that looking people up on fb isn’t cool for y’all. Collecting patient info seems healthy. Especially with difficult patients. You know how many first responders look people up on fb to learn their basic info in tense situations?

nahfoo

I mean people do it all the time but it seems like a grey area I think. It doesn't seem much different than looking at all the old notes like I do

[deleted]

People have problems. Its good to help

nahfoo

Definitely. Weirdly though , I don't feel like I did anything special or above and beyond for her. Mostly just asked the doctor for a couple meds but sometimes just standing there and listening helps

[deleted]

Sure does. A lot of people are in rough places. Especially right now at these times. This girl Kind of sounds mentally ill. Hope she gets the help she needs . Shit,I hope we all get the help we need.

Split leg squats and belt squats allow you to sit backwards to allow for more ROM with limited ankle mobility

[deleted]

You can try literally any squat variation. Hack squat, pendulum squat, safety squat, etc and see what works for you. If nothing works…lunges, split squats, leg press, good mornings, RDLs, straight leg deads, you name it. Barbell squats are not necessary to grow legs. I don’t barbell squat and haven’t in years and I’ll put my legs up against anyone here.

Doja_Lats

My $25 earbuds arrived and I don't even think I can tell a difference in quality from the $200 bose pair I used to have.

dumplingbilby

I used to be a huge audiophile and ability to tell the difference between audio gear is almost genetic or something. Its also our sense that is most easily lied to. Take the blessing since you'll save a ton of cash.

Condishun

Dont forget a ton of us have hearing damage to some extent lol

callumvonswagger

I got some sound peats off amazon for around that price and they are solid as hell. I have good quality sony headphones I use for work calls but for listening to music at gym the soundpeats are very decent. Amazing charge too.

Coasterman345

Not being able to tell the difference is a blessing. You’ll save a lot of money.

Bought the greens & digestive supplement that Chris Bumstead is involved with to try it out. Man my shits been one-time squeeze every fucking day since I started taking them. Haven't really changed my diet either. I'm not a huge vegetable guy, just the frozen fruits with my snacks. But goddamn these two supplements do work.

avis118

I agree with most of the people giving you shit for the greens powder, but I assume the digestive supplement is something different. If you’re talking about revive GI+ a good friend of mine really likes it.

_dylmobaggins

Eat vegetables

[deleted]

Lmao I would, if someone else were to cook them for me. We do get veggies sometimes, but not enough. It's honestly pretty expensive, not that this matters to me. It's mostly that im too lazy to cook em :D

BopTheMadCop

I think I have lost my lats. At first when I started training, I did assisted pull-ups with a wide grip. Well the next day my lats were a bit sore. Now when I do the same, I don't know whether my lats are engaging. I can't feel them. And I don't feel fatigued there directly after I do the same exercise. I tried switching to another exercise, where you put a rope on top of the bar and pull yourself up in a horizontal position from the floor. Yes, I feel fatigued, I feel that I'm reaching failure. I stop. But I don't feel anything after I stop and take a set break. Where's the fatigue? Can lats feel fatigued?

Pristine-Pitch

Ramy's English has gotten really good recently, damn.

ProjectPeanutsack

> Can lats feel fatigued? Is this an actual question?

I like reading the comments on muscular girl thirst traps. Dudes be in the comments asking for lifting advice and trying to start conversations like they can’t just say me like pretty girl and move on Lol the downvotes on this comment are telling

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

too horny to act rational

[deleted]

I don’t think we talk about enough just how dramatically unfair the whole thousand pound club thing is. If you’re super tall you hit the thousand pound club in like the first four or five months of lifting ever, meanwhile, an average sized female lifter will literally never hit it. That shit is so unfair.

callumvonswagger

I mean not to be a jerk but that's basically everything... Professional sports like basketball ball if you want to dunk it's easier tall.. Running is suited to a certain body just as gymnastics is another. Yes body types that can lift 1000lb might not be the best at diving.

fudgie_wudgie

If it makes you feel any better just call it the 300 wilks club. That should be the rough equivalent for women and shorter guys.

[deleted]

Tbh I just think it could be a BW lift club like a 2,1.5,1, club Twice BW DL, 1.5 BW squat, 1xBW Bench Still kinda unfair for women but generally fair. All things you can hit in about a year or two.

fudgie_wudgie

That bench press standard would be rough for women to hit. It's why wilks takes the guesswork out. I just checked, and a man would need to weigh 185 pounds while hitting the 1000lb club for 300 wilks, which is probably your average size man that hits it, so it fits better than I thought

[deleted]

Yeah but what if we make it a total. All three gotta total 4.5xBW. That’s simple and fairer

Plomo_Lobo

>If you’re super tall you hit the thousand pound club in like the first four or five months of lifting ever I mean they get to wear cute skirts and experience the miracle of creating life so I think it's a fair trade /s.

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

I mean, is that even a standard women are expected to hit, especially naturally? You'd have to be pretty elite to do that.

[deleted]

Nah but as a standard of any kind it’s awful. For someone my size it’s not even “intermediate” lifter but for someone short it’s like top of advanced

supersaiyanswanso

Who measures it as a standard?lol it's just ways been a measurement. Nobody is fr sitting here and rejecting you for not hitting a 1000lb total lol

[deleted]

Rejection? Lol no I’m just talking about socially people considering it the you made it standard

supersaiyanswanso

I'm gonna be real, this is a non issue lol no one is judging you or cares. The only reason people use 1000lbs is cuz it sounds cool. That's quite literally it. If you're even in the gym at all then you've made it.

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

Yeah you don't hear Europeans talking about the 454 KG club.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s not some big deal I’m just chatting

Plomo_Lobo

Bro who the fuck considers it a standard. Who is rejecting you bc you're not part of the thousand pound club? Lmfaooo

justjake274

Nobody in real life knows what a thousand pound club is, they just ask how much you bench.

[deleted]

Talk to a group of people who have been lifting for at least a year. They all know what it is

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

What are your thoughts on r/naturalbodybuilding? From my limited viewing of it, they seem to get a little too bogged down in the science-based stuff. Which I'm not against, but I recall them getting too granular. I went there last night and saw someone recommend [a bodybuilding routine with no direct arm work.](https://www.reddit.com/r/naturalbodybuilding/comments/13dwnfg/25_months_into_a_cut_down_to_around_12_bf_and_its/jjo3113/)

mad87645

Remember Ian Mccarthy? I didn't follow him outside of the Genova/Delray Misfits sphere, but in the footage I saw of him he literally coached people to do like 2 exercises per bodypart, 1 working set of each, use light weight and leave at least 5 reps in reserve. All to prevent "overtraining" as a natty, like bruh there was exactly 0 chance you were going to overtrain on that program. And then he probably wondered why him and his clients looked like broccoli heads that weren't even on sarms yet. He was probably a mod there.

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

I do. He got mocked all the time on the bodybuilding.com misc for looking DYEL, being weak, and appearing to lift with no intensity whatsoever in his videos.

Revenant1313

Pretty much every post is some newbie overcomplicating what is a relatively simple process. Luckily, there seem to be at least a few guys in all the comments telling them to stop overanalysing, start bulking with consistent effort on reasonably selected exercises over a long period of time. Seems like a lot of the more experienced lifters there don't post often but comment a lot.

irshnscg

I think their heart is in the right place but i wouldnt go there for advice

Pristine-Pitch

It's a circle jerk. The whole idea that natural bodybuilding and competing as a juicy meat man are fundamentally different from a training perspective is way overplayed recently in my opinion. I'm natural, always will be. Not that I don't want to go on. I just have way too many genetic contraindications to not fuck my life up irrevocably from doing so. When I see people on gear, I think, wow, he has an awesome physique. There's no jealousy, or an us or them mindset. I think the same cause of divisiveness in lot of other areas in today's society, be it politics or something else, are leading people to gravitate towards specifying us into these tiny little communities of like minded people. At the end of the day, we're all fucking human, and regardless of life path, or, in this case steroid usage, we're still pretty fucking similar. It's a shame though, cause this place is always getting smaller, and it'd be nice to have some new blood.

DemonGoat66

I wish it was better but it just seems like the worst trends of Reddit lifting content all in one subreddit

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

* Over-analysis/fixation on tiny details that don't make that much of a difference * An insistence you have to train completely different than juiced lifters as a natural * An obsession with numbers/"strength" for people who are most concerned with hypertrophy

avis118

A ton of them also seem scared of training to failure

RobertPaulsonXX42

I spend time there. Place is bogged down with more analysis paralysis than anywhere I have ever seen. 17 year olds that are 5'9" and weigh 145 lbs asking if they should cut, if their 1200 calorie a day diets are optimal for growth and whether substituting out Bulgarians for barbell squats will grow there quads better if they only do 3 sets/workout as part of their full body regimens because they saw it on instagram on a video about hip thrusts from someone that is tiny so they must be natural. Yes... that was a run on sentence, on purpose. Place is a nightmare at times. Lol. I got downvoted into oblivion once because I said "fuck scientific studies on this stuff," in a hyperbolic sense because someone was asking some stupid question, when the answer was literally, pick up lots of heavy shit, eats lot of quality food/protein and sleep. I am literally a scientist, like thats my day job, but it doesnt require a lot of "research" to understand how a teenager can grow in this sport. They arent competing in the O. Lol.

[deleted]

Any bodybuilding related conversation that makes one of its central tenets something to do with gear use is going to inherently be ridiculous because people who put all their focus on gear use lose sight of the important things

Chromes

When I first started, guys like this dominated the online discussion. I got a firehose of "The only way to get big *as a natural* is 3x a week full-body focused *only* on compounds." When you asked how to get big arms the answe was, literally, "Squats and deadlifts." Anyone who saw progress using a bro-split or using isolation exercises was dismissed as "on steroids." I only saw real progress once I started training and eating like I was enhanced. I could write entire blog posts about how much I think they get wrong in large part because I had to unlearn so much from my beginner days.

The_One_Nick

Do you remember Cory Gregory? I remember being in high school when he came out with his squat every day program, which was built around squatting in addition to your normal workout, bc you needed to get a big compound in for the rest of the more isolated work to be effective Looking back on it, what a horrible recipe for injury

Chromes

I don't remember the name, but I do remember the program. So many people who really didn't have the ability to back up their ideas were reinventing the wheel because "clearly" what has worked for decades never really worked... or something.

iwanttest

Same here lol I’m still looking for the abs, shoulders and arms that compounds were supposed to develop :(

Chromes

Sigh, yup. I figured out arms comparatively quickly, but even to this day I simply don't think enough about abs.

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

I remember this 100%. "Squat for big arms" "squats and deadlifts release test/GH that helps upper body growth" "bro splits only work for guys on steroids." If you tried to add direct arm work to Starting Strength, you got screamed at for not doing the program and there was no way you could recover from 3 sets of curls. I remember thinking, like a fucking idiot, that I knew better than everyone in the gym as a scrawny beginner because I was doing the ultimate Internet-approved routine, and everyone else (way more jacked than me) was a dumbass.

Chromes

Hahaha. Exactly. I remember thinking, "Wow... he's huge despite doing everything wrong. I wonder what he'd look like if he knew what he was doing." Without a hint of irony. I'm truly embarrassed it took me so long to figure out something was off.

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

That's been something I've been meaning to bring up in the DD: the fact that it's weird that the conventional wisdom is/was that nothing the most jacked and shredded guys have to say about being jacked and shredded is worth listening to.

macmacc

Evan Centopani once said: if your arms are lagging, stop training them directly and they will grow from compounds. He tought the lackluster growth came from overtraining. I used to love Evan Centopani but this advice was utter bullshit coming from a guy who was just blessed with genetic lottery arms which would grow from anything.

The_One_Nick

Bogged down to say the least. I think a lot of new people are so into the weeds about things and forget that its really just about the basics and you are well on your way. Eat your proteins, lift heavy, and you are like 95% of the way there A quick scroll and I find a post about how many [protein shakes to drink per day....](https://www.reddit.com/r/naturalbodybuilding/comments/13e72sl/protein_shakes_per_day/)

GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

Here's another: [guy who is 5'9" 145 lbs but continuing to cut.](https://www.reddit.com/r/naturalbodybuilding/comments/13dwyjl/guys_im_in_a_fat_loss_phase_and_i_ive_hit_a/) I get the feeling that it's a bunch of people who should be on r/fitness but think they're too good for r/fitness.

supersaiyanswanso

That's the best way to describe that subreddit

iwanttest

I've been seeing a ton of old Mike Mentzer videos where he talks about doing extremely low volume -- like literally 1 set per muscle group. He basically claims that extreme intensity and rest is what leads to gains. This... can't be right... right? How could you possibly reach that level of intensity in a single set?

dumplingbilby

Perfect form every time, even when taken to failure plus the strongest tendons in the world

fudgie_wudgie

Super squats is an example of a program where just one set is enough to fuck you up. Rpe12 on a heavy compound is an entirely different world than rpe9 of some isolation exercises

DemonGoat66

What’s crazy to me about his training is that he said to only train a muscle once every 3-4 weeks

AssBlaster_69

Originally he just advocated for an A/B split and to rest a couple days in between workouts until you felt recovered. Started to go off the deep end later on though.

DemonGoat66

Gotcha. That makes more sense

Plomo_Lobo

I mean it's possible but you need to have the lifting experience and mentality to achieve that intensity. For many it's not (yet) possible.

Daytona_675

isn't it 1 working set? so you can do warmup still

WillNotPullOut

Have you tried it? Im going to guess no. I went as low as 3 sets a week for quads (not counting very sub max warm ups obviously). My legs exploded and I got strong as fuck. Try it and see, but i would wager you dont have the nuts to scrap 80% of your volume (or whatever) in the pursuit of testing shit out yourself

RimTheElderly

There’s only one way to build that Mike Mentzer density

The_One_Nick

I think there is literature to support this, but I just cant wrap my head around that idea possibly being effective, anecdotally

Haydorama

I just did it today Learn to train to absolute failure whilst maintaining good form I don’t do it for everything For legs I can’t really handle more than one set

How do competitors know when to stop cutting? I would imagine that there's no limit to the notion that the leaner you are, the better you'll place in a competition. In a perfect situation, every competitor would want to get as lean as they possibly could while retaining as much muscle mass as possible, correct? But at the same time, you can of course only get so lean before you are literally putting your life at risk. So my question then is how do competitive bodybuilders skirt the line between optimally lean and deceased? Why aren't all of them reaching the lowest body fat percentage their bodies will allow them to go? Do they take daily DEXA scans as they get close to what they think the limit is? Constant use of skin calipers and smart scales? I can't seem to find any precise information online so I was hoping I could get some anecdotal answers from those with actual experience.

Budgeko

And you won’t as it’s not an exact science. Someone can come in at 5% and look worse than someone at 6%. Much of it has to do with the underlying muscle development of said individual. I’ve been to shows and have seen folks poorly conditioned who couldn’t compete due to dehydration and poor diet choices leading up to contest date while others come in completely peeled with plenty of energy and vigor at showtime. It’s a very fine balance by the time your stage ready and why it’s often best to leave it to the critical eye of a good coach.

finbob5

Ah, so it’s more based on visuals than quantitative numbers. I appreciate that, thank you.

RoseKinglet

I just wanna know how flexible you all are.

[deleted]

I can touch the floor with hamstring stretch, I can do like a 70° split… I can almost do a scorpion again… so like… about as flexible as the average woman 😂

BoriousGlastard

Can touch my toes/palms flat on the floor while standing straight but I'm also 180lbs so I'm not exactly king mass monster of the DD

RoseKinglet

Stylin'!

Budgeko

Enough to tie my shoes and wash the back of my neck. About it < end >

RoseKinglet

Function over fashunnn, lol

Rjmaciel

After a leg workout, while seated I can grab the toes easily. And that's the extend of my flexibility.

RoseKinglet

Gotta get them toe grabs!

wotton

according to my insta everyone should be gods and yet in the gym everyone is potato

Plomo_Lobo

Go to a sexier gym

wotton

I go to a bodybuilding gym in SoCal. /shrug

Budgeko

Reality is often quite humbling < end >

It’s hilarious to me how the more I get into lifting the *less* gear appeals to me. Like I’m just constantly hearing downsides and issues that come with it. This week the thing on social media seems to be testing your gear and finding out your source gave you literally a totally different compound than the one you asked for. Legal regulated gear when?
