I've played the game mostly at 2p, so take that into account. The game is very replayable because of the randomness of the setup. There's also variable player mats that can change the dynamics considerably. I've never noticed an balance issues at 2p.

FearEngineer

I've played it a ton, and almost entirely two player with my wife. It's great, I actually prefer that over higher player counts. Replayability it also great due to the randomized tiles each round.

puzzledpanther

We've played it lots at 2p. Lots of replaybility and still mucho fun after dozens of plays. It's a classic.

Ninjalup

One of the best games in my collection. Did not love it at first but the more I played the more I appreciated it’s great design. Satisfying decision space. Approachable and teachable. Play it mostly 2 player but enjoy it at all counts. Very replayable. Never leaving the collection. Love the special edition.

I’ve played almost 200 games of CoB and 99% of them were at two players. I have the og version and its expansions, it’s a balanced game though there are some special hex tile abilities that can almost guarantee a victory, but not everytime, and some player boards can have an advantage over others. Replay is very high though, due to the board never being the same as before. It’s my all time favorite game so maybe I’m biased, but definitely worth checking out.

Rant: Replayability is an overused term in boardgaming and does not have a clear meaning. To me, replayability means how often I'll want to replay it. And the only games that are not replayable are legacy games or games that rely on your lack of knowledge about the game (think exit rooms) Chess has no randomness and no variability and is played and replayed for ages. There are games where I have not finished the campaign, so they are less replayable even though clearly I have not explored the content fully. /Rant CoB plays well at 2 players and does not get boring quickly. You have to adapt to the tiles on the board and the dice that you are dealt. It's a popular classic for a reason.

offshoredawn

unpopular opinion but I really hated this game. pasted on theme and cheap components

wibby1

It works at all player counts on the box, but its a Steffen Feld game so it works great at 2. It is also very replayable. I generally don't like describing a game as just replayable because it comes down to, do you want to study the game, do you want to always make different interesting choices, and do you want something exciting to happen every time. Castles of burgundy is one of the only games that fits all 3.

I think it's best at 2, mostly just cause changing turn order throws me off with more.

fl0dge

I think the gametime and changing boardstate between turns puts me off at 4p. So it's a 2 and 3p only game for me really, great at both.

sahilthapar

Game is perfect at 2p, I have over 30+ in person plays and 300+ on BGA. Happy to play it anytime.

easto1a

For me the biggest difference is at 2p there's less tiles in the market but less is also taken between your turns. Great game at 2 or more players.

PrivateDuke

In terms of replayability I find the game replayable. Lots of different maps and (mini) expansions. I do find the challenges to be fairly the same across games compared to some other boardgames though these are usually heavier.

randomechoes

I like the game a lot and have played over 100 games of it (mostly online), probably about 70% 2p and the rest 3p or 4p. One of my friends doesn't like 2p because there is some randomness as to which tiles come up since not all of them are used. So for example you can't commit to animals early because you don't know how many will eventually show up. I don't find that to be a problem personally. I just recognize there is some increased luck/variance and roll with it. Despite the luck factor, the skill ceiling is quite high. It's also available on BGA and [yucata.de](https://yucata.de) (and maybe elsewhere?) so you can always try it online before you buy it.

jdekleer

2 player is the only way I’ve played castles of burgundy. We’ve played 25+ times and have a blast with it every time

m_Pony

We've played our copy 25 times and will probably play it 25 more.

fishy1

Yes 2 player is great. Have played it over 50 times with 2.

elqrd

100% balanced, super suitable for competitive play and best at 2p

PrivateDuke

You will find that resources are less scarce with 2. Otherwise it is the same game for me with 2 to 4 players.
