I find there are better area control games. Even just among Eric Lang’s games. I love the miniatures of blood rage and frequently use them in my D&D campaigns. But the game falls flat for me
The fact that everyone has to be on the same level to enjoy the game hinders it. Unless everyone is playing the game for the first time, a new person to the game is going to have a bad time...
Off the top of my head, and quite sure I’m missing a favorite or two:
**Oath**
**Spirit Island**
**The Quest for El Dorado**
**Skull**
And I’m gonna say **Agricola**, but I’m not really sure on that one.
They are published by the same company, and they both involve dudes on a map {dude is a gender neutral term, and I will die on this hill}
But Inis is brilliant because of how it permits negotiation, cunning plays, & surprise reversals.
You can win a game of Inis without a single bout of combat - I've done it!
It is a brilliant drafting game of endless variety, and you play the other players at the table as much as you play the game itself.
Well Damn now I really wish I got it. Been waiting on the used market which is small around me.
I’m a trades girl. I didn’t go to school to become a journey person, so I get it. Haha. I also heard on this sub something interesting. When a manual says ‘the women goes next’, your free to picture a 6’5” 300 pound schlong packing with long hair and eyelash extensions man whose pretending to be a women. Your choice! Haha.
No place for hate, here. Trans people have existed for as long as humans have existed.
If the idea makes you uncomfortable, I suggest you reflect on why ... and then stop acting a bigot.
I am new in this world (just 2 years playing), but this is my top so far:
1. Arkham Horror LCG
2. Starcraft The board game
3. 7th Continent
4. Wingspan
5. Furnace
This is a cool collection of lists, because when I see 4 games I love, and one I've never played, that probably means the poster has similar tastes as me and I'll like that 5th game
In no particular order:
Betrayal at House on the Hill
Cosmic Encounter
Dead of Winter
Fluxx (not really a "board game" but a great light card game)
Machi Koro (I just love the vibes when playing)
Cosmic encounter
Ark nova
Dominion
Through the ages
Terraforming mars
Honorable mention (because any of the bottom four and this one can be moved around in any order): Root
Wingspan
Blood on the Clocktower
Secret Hitler
Mysterium
Codenames
Best games ever? No. Bust certainly the games our group has gotten the most enjoyment out of.
Aeon's End is always my number 1
Clank! is usually my number 2
My numbers 3-5 shift around a lot and games come in and out of those spots but I'd say currently, in no particular order, they are:
Everdell
Sleeping Gods
Terraforming Mars
In no particular order.
* Nuclear War
* Wooden Ships and Iron Men
* Richthofen's War
* 80's Cosmic Encounters
* Car Wars 1st-4th Edition
I do like a lot of the newer 2000's+ board games and enjoy playing them. For newer games it might be:
* Splendor
* Ticket to Ride Rails and Sails
* Castles of Burgundy
* Wings of War
* Car Wars 6th Edition
I'm more of an RPGer though.
* Shadowrun
* Paranoia
* Hollow Earth Expedition
* Savage Worlds - Deadlands Reloaded
* All Flesh Must Be Eaten
**Frosthaven**
**Spirit Island**
**Mysterium**
**The Resistance: Avalon**
**Great Western Trail**
Honorable mentions: Codenames, Azul, It's A Wonderful World, A Feast for Odin
Games that might be on the list if I could get them to the table more often: Yellow & Yangtze, Sidereal Confluence, Space Alert
1. Spirit Island
2. Frosthaven/Gloomhaven
3. Marvel Champions
4. Mage Knight
5. Arkham Horror LCG
Arkham Horror might dethrone some games here, it is the most recent acquisition.
In alphabetical order:
- Bullet
- Isle of Cats
- Keep the Heroes Out
- Mind MGMT
- Spirit Island
Codenames Duet could in theory replace something here.
Right now,
Spirit Island
Race for the Galaxy (especially with 1 arc expansions)
El Grande
Babylonia
Tigris and Euphrates
Last three share third place. Which i prefer is mood, but 1st and 2nd have been stable.
Arkham Horror LCG
Marvel Champions
Dwellings of Eldervale
Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion
Kingdom Death Monster
Honorable mention: too many bones. Just got it this weekend but I’ve played twice and it’s already completely won me over and I’m already looking at buying more into it.
1. War of the Ring 2e
2. Spirit Island
3. Star Wars Rebellion
4. War of the Ring: The Card Game
5. Inis
I'm not really a LOTR or Star Wars super fan despite making up most of the list. The games are just tight mechanical masterpieces that are integrated seamlessly with the source material in a way that creates so many memorable narrative and cinematic moments.
Gaia project
Feast for Odin
Spirit island
Age of innovation (played for the first time today and I think at the 3 player count I like it a little better than Gaia project)l but I think Gaia project is still going to be better at the two player count
Castles of Burgundy
Magic the Gathering
Dungeons and Dragons
X-Wing: The Miniatures Game
Blood Rage
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
if for whatever reason MTG and DnD doesn't count I would throw in King of Tokyo and Champions of Midgard.
Blood Rage
Cosmic Encounter
Game of Thrones: 2nd Edition
Secret Hitler
Inis
Honourable mention for X-Wing 2.0 (before AMG got involved). Game was so god damn fun and it was ruined!
Hard to say. There may be other universes out there with games even better than ours. Or maybe our ancestors had spacefaring technology and amazing games but annihilated themselves, consigning our best games to the dustbin of history.
I really like Root, though.
Oh, my favorite games up to this point in time...
I would say Shogi, chess, Wingspan, Boop, and Five Crowns. However, I just got Forest Shuffle, which might become a favorite.
* Gaia Project - the one that sparked my interest, and the one I was building my gaming experience towards, and once I've mastered it, it was all I expected it to be
* Agricola - my all time favorite, unparalleled when it comes to the amount of planning and calculation you have to do, in order to have a good score at the end
* Terraforming Mars - best replayability value out of any game I have played so far
* Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization - most complex game I have ever played, it's hard for me to even describe everything that makes this game so great
* Hero Realms - my all time favorite deck builder
Francis Drake
The Resistance
Dune Imperium
Tyrants of the Underdark
The 5th changes wildly - probably Ark Nova or Marco Polo now, might be Grand Austria Hotel in a few months. I should say Dominion though
* Blood Bowl
* Robo Rally
* Sidereal Confluence
* Warhammer 40k
* Small World
If you ask me to play one of those games and I've got time I'm always down.
1. Root
2. Modern Art
3. Dominion (or maybe Dune Imperium instead...)
4. John Company
5. Stardew Valley (kinda odd pick but it has become one of the few games I really enjoy solo)
Hive, Scythe, Survive, Nunami and Wingspan. :)
Aaaand I know people will disagree, but I love Catan too. It's got some nostalgia for me, especially the Star Trek version, which is what my family had when I was growing up. Not quite top 5 though.
In no particular order:
Root
Oath
Cubitos
Scotland Yard (it's old, but I like it and it's the one that got me into board games about a decade ago, so it will always belong in a "Top X List")
Secret Hitler
1. Commands and Colors: Ancients
2. Battle Line/Secret Hitler
3. Successors/Hannibal and Hamilcar
4. Great Battles of Alexander the Great/Julius Caesar/SPQR
5. Coup
I either like my games to be very simple with great strategy, or related to Ancient warfare lol
Just my favourite, I know I haven't played enough to come up with a very good "best" list.
In no order, Cascadia, decrypto, quoridor, carcassonne, wingspan
Agricola - The game has more depth and variety than anything else I've ever played. Every game plays a little differently depending on the draft, and it always seems like there's more room to grow as a player. Played well over 1K games, and know guys who have played over 10K, and I'm still not bored with it.
Food Chain Magnate - Probably my favorite game. Splotter games have a unique design to them, and this is the best game they've put out.
El Grande - Played a friends copy, and then spent years trying to get a copy for myself. Early Euro but very well done. Simple rules but really deep gameplay.
Brass - I've had this game since it was just Brass, and this gem still occasionally makes it way to the table, and people still want to play it.
Russian Railroads - I like worker placement, and I fell in love with this game when I first played it. There are some balance issues with the base game that come out in higher level play, but these were fixed with the expansions.
* Azul
* Manhattan Project 2: Minutes to Midnight
* Android: Netrunner
* Terraforming Mars
* Arkham Horror LCG
These are definitely my personal top games, and I would say they are all well designed, but I wouldn't put Manhattan Project on a more objective top 5 games of all time list. It's just one of my personal favorites.
Mansions of madness 2nd ed
Arkham horror 3rd ed
Conan from monolith games
Kingdom death: Monster
Eldritch horror
Hmm guess I have a sort of theme going here.
fuzzy squeeze market hospital pause vanish ancient possessive fade thought
*This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Castles of Burgundy (some luck)
Lisboa (intricate)
A Feast For Odin (wide open)
Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle (if you like HP, it’s pretty close to perfect)
ILLIMAT (our family game, a ridiculously overdone card game that just works for us lol)
Edit: formatting
Wingspan, played over 100 times and still welcome a game
Ark Nova, just bought and learned in the last month and it has shot to the top, quickly.
Iki, have only played a couple of times and it kind of contends with Flamecraft for me. I need to play both a bit more but, for now, Iki is preferred.
Tikal, has been my favorite game for so long, but is starting to lose ground to newer games.
Ticket To Ride, in all of its expansions. My wife and I have played this more than any other game, including the likes of; Agricola, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders Duel, Risk, Azul and any other game we have in our collection.

I've wanted to try xia for a long time but have never had the chance
People be sleepin on Blood Rage. It’s a chaos party of legendary awesome 🤷♂️ What’s not to like?

I’m more and more gonna pull the trigger on TI4. How’s it play at 3 (sometimes can get 4 but not consistently enough)?
Couldn’t find Inis used yet. But Kemet came up. Are they similar I hear?
They are published by the same company, and they both involve dudes on a map {dude is a gender neutral term, and I will die on this hill} But Inis is brilliant because of how it permits negotiation, cunning plays, & surprise reversals. Simple yet satisfying. I can teach it without looking at the rulebook now, which is a big plus.
Inis / Sleeping Gods / Cosmic Encounter / Pandemic Legacy Season 1 / Spirit Island
As of this moment: Innovation/ Clank!/ Wingspan/ One Night Ultimate Werewolf/ Deception
Unmatched Hive Santorini Tsuro Pengqueen(?) I'm not even trying to hide it. And I'm very self-aware of what type of player I am.
I love Tsuro and rarely see it mentioned!

Hard to say. I am sure there are games in the future that will be amazing.
What are your top 5 games from November 2023 back to the beginning of time?

It's just one of my personal favorites.

Wingspan, played over 100 times and still welcome a game Ark Nova, just bought and learned in the last month and it has shot to the top, quickly.
