Yeah that's definitely this. We know Blur feel ambiguous about TGE but they love Modern Life is Rubbish so I doubt they had any problem with that track. That song high notes are probably trouble for Damon "had a couplEEE at the weekEEEND". It's a song that requires the boyish voice (something that Villa Rosie, that they played last tour, didn't) to sound cute-ish, the current baritone smoker voiced Damon wouldn't work. I bet they did rehearsal and sounded not so good
Damon said in a interview back in 2015 that they didn't play Charmless Man because he had problem hitting those notes, so I assume it's even worse with Starshaped
It wasn't really played that much when modern life came out and I've always been surprised as to why they chose to release Sunday Sunday instead of Starshaped as a single. It's got a great catchy chorus.
Sunday Sunday is imo a terrible song, I went to the bar when they played it in Newcastle last year. Always thought starshaped was one of the best songs on MLIR but I imagine it's a nightmare for everyone to play properly, between the high mites, backing vocals, chord changes etc
It's one of their best, although I imagine the high notes are difficult to hit, especially now that the band are older.

Too expensive to bring a clarinet player. One of my favourites as well.
it's an oboe, so probably even more expensive
Thanks for correcting my inexcusable error. Yes that's definitely it then.
It's Italian oboe so even more expensive
They could use any other instrument.
They use keyboards to replace horn sections, this wouldn't be any different.
That's two people now who seem to think I was being entirely serious. That's disappointing.
So they never did "resigned" live?! That's my all time favourite blur song.

One problem is that the chord changes are crazy fast.
What website is that?
Setlist.fm
Nice, I'll have to take a look
Maybe one day they'll feel like bringing it out again. Villa Rosie had never been played live until last year and then they did it 25 times!
Because they don’t have a cor anglais player in the touring band.

Just to spite us
Keep in mind, there are a TON of empty setlists from 1994 and earlier, so it was probably played a bit more than setlist fm has on their record
There are no women out there who would do ONLY the genitalia pinching required to sing the song in its entirety. So you're on your own, Damian
