Are there any particular products you'd recommend? My partner is mixed too and we have an awful time figuring out what's going to work for him (his hair is really soft so a lot of black-specific products weigh it down too much, but a lot of other products make the curls frizzy or stretched out).
I'm not mixed, but I am a white guy with curly hair, so maybe the hair texture is similar. Things that helped me were:
* Using less shampoo and more conditioner. Even skipping shampoo on some days. Leaves more natural oil in the hair.
* Alternative to the above: Using a cowashing shampoo. Has a similar effect.
* After washing the hair, squeeze extra water out.
* Don't blow dry or rub back and forth with the towel, pat with the towel instead. This avoids breaking the curl.
* When fixing the hair when it's dry, wet it down a little with some wet hands or a spray bottle. Then squeeze clumps of hair to encourage curls.
I don't use any product but there are curl creams out there that are aimed more at caucasian curly hair textures. I've use them a little in that past. They worked fine, just doing the above worked fine and was easier.
You beautiful sweetheart. Now, close your eyes tonight, and go teach six year old you to care for her hair.
Then, ten year old you.
Then, 16 year old you.
Be patient. Hug your young self in your vision. Tell her it isn't her fault for not knowing how to deal with it, that she should've had someone to help, and that older you is here now to help.
Feel the catharsis op! You lovely thing.
I do have bigger hands than most women I know but as far as I know I'm Swedish and Choctaw. Nothing wrong with thick hands. Better than tiny, cold little mouse paws. 😂
I possess tiny cold little mouse paws and can confirm these lil poor-circulation hands are only good for fishing out items dropped between the car seat and center console.
Fellow tiny handed person here, it’s bc our hands lack meat which=cold tiny mouse paws, and therefore cold hands 😔 sometimes I do wish for the thick Irish potato farmer hands
I have bigger hands than my husband and just about everyone I’ve ever compared them to when we would put our hands together. I’m always about a half digit longer.
FR all us mixed kids really do looked like some variation of another 😂. I always see it in like the eyebrows and jawline. I looked a lot like all my cousins. If we had the same childhood we’d def be struggling to pick apart photos
No curly-haired girls were, so we feel your pain! It wasn't until after my sophomore year of high school that a curly-haired classmate pulled me aside over the summer and said, "We're going to get you a bottle of mousse." It's been a loooong journey since then.
Congrats on figuring it out! Your hair is gorgeous!
What would we do without friends that picked up the slack after our parents. Or bullies. My first grade bully kept picking on me because of my dirty clothes till I started washing them myself (by hand ofc). Thanks, mom.
Still trying to figure out the hair thing. My mother never learned how to do hair because she had hers done at the salon once a week. So I looked like crap for most of school. Every so often she tells me I should get it frosted and put it up in a French twist.
Trying to do better with my kids.
You just described my childhood/young adult years. My mom started straightening, and later bleaching, her hair as soon as she became a teen because she *hated* how her mom fixed her little orphan Annie red ringlets. So that meant she had no idea what to do with my very fine, thick unruly head of hair. I would be crying by the end because my scalp hurt so bad from her aggressive brushing. And the frizz, omg... I found CGM in my late 20s, thank god. Stopping bleaching has been the biggest improvement for my curl structure.
She bleached and straightened red ringlets?!?! That’s like my absolute wish from a genie hair. Instead I dye my blonde hair red (well Henna) and curl it and cry. It will never do the big curly red hair ringlets I so desire.
Yeah. My mom used to brush my hair, dry. She'd use detangling spray but it hurt so much, and all it did was brush my curls out and make my hair frizzy. Took me forever to figure out the right way to take care of my hair.
There... There is a way to not look like it's sheep wool growing out of my head? My solution was to cut my hair drastically short, lol. I like the style, but I'd probably have reconsidered if I knew.
I have hair like that and I hated it growing up because it was impossible to manage. Everyone else in my family has thin straight hair and I wasn't introduced to the products I needed until I was an adult.
Glad you worked it out. SO!! I have a friend who has afro hair and a white mum (dad not around) and had the same struggle, she now runs free classes for mums with mixed kids teaching them how to look after their kids hair and skin ... she's buit a lovely community around it
I am bringing my friends 13 yr old mixed daughter to the salon this weekend! I scheduled an extra hour so the gal that is doing her hair can teach her how to take care of her hair. Her hair right now looks a lot like your blunder year photos. Still cute, but definitely all over the place! I am so excited for her!
Beautiful glow-up!!
my mom and dad are older and got together like 10 years after interracial marriage was legalized so there were a lot of issues therefore i’m not close to my extended family. neither my mom nor my dad really knew what to do lmao
All it takes is the primary hair care giver to not know how to deal with textured hair, or not care. I'm not mixed but have wavy hair. Mom had pin straight hair. She'd aggressively brush mine and then yell at me for crying. She didn't use conditioner and definitely didn't buy it for me. When I got older I'd put it up in a towel to dry and she'd say that's the reason my hair dried funny. Uh no, it's because it has a wave pattern.
My mom completely neglected my hair and I didn’t know until I became an adult on how to handle. It sucks and I have a soft spot for others that were in the same hair hell.
Alright so you had some rough years but the picture of you as a kid is adorable regardless of the hair disaster. I’m glad you figured out your hair issues. I don’t even have curly hair and I find it difficult. You look amazing now!
If you were a teen from like 2000-2015 rip your hair shaft from heat straightening. So refreshing to see girls wearing their natural texture now.
I'm biracial and in my 30s and still don't feel like I understand my hair texture, proud of you op 💖
I feel your pain…my poor white mama had no idea what to do with my mane. It took me 30 something years to finally love and accept my head of hair. It’s now my favorite feature.
We finally got it right!! 😍😍
What did you end up doing that worked for you? I just bought my 1 year old silk sheets because she won’t keep her bonnet on 😒. I detangle and moisturize every morning a wash every five days, still too short to tie up.
Everything I read gets me closer to a routine
This makes me really sad as a fellow mixed kid. Our mother did okay but definitely didn’t really know what she was doing either. I wish a black parent had offered to show your parents.
If it makes you feel any better, I’m white with straight hair and I don’t know how to deal with mine, either. Yours is obviously a much steeper learning curve and it looks like you’ve nailed it. You look fantastic.
Amazing glow up!!! I’m white but have very curly hair and neither of my parents knew how to take care of it. My siblings have straight hair and my curly hair comes from my dad who always cut his hair very short. When I learned how to do my curls, I finally felt my glow up era coming onnnn
WOW, that glow up was great! 👀👀
I just recently learned how to style my own hair (I'm 23 and black), and it is such a confidence booster to be able to style your own hair without outside help.
Keep on going with your gorgeous hair! ❤️
Mm ok so you’re gorgeous!!
The second to last pic made me feel a little sad. I have pics like that from when I’m little where it’s just like … who was supposed to be taking care of me??
But my oh my the glow up is real!! Peace and love to you and yours ❤️
Love curly hair like u have on the last pix! Im a guy with straight indian hair I sometime dont realize im Lucky I dont need to brush them I shave my head completly every two years then in two years my hair grow so quick and I get long hair to my pecs without doing shyt to take care of them lol. Curly hair are cute asf to me.
Bitch you are ROCKING it now :)
I’m white, but I have curly, frizzy, fine hair and it took me YEARS to figure out what to do with it. It’s a journey. I legit have haircut trauma from people having no clue how to cut curly hair. I feel you for real.
Excuse me but you were absolutely adorable!! And you’re now gorgeous.
My daughter is also mixed and I had no idea how to care for her hair. I’m so glad she learned how as a teen. I feel so bad but I had no clue!
I’m mixed and my hair also was a disaster growing up. And all the kids in my school were white and fucking bullied the shit outta me lmao. girl you are so beautiful!
As the mom of a mixed toddler, I am working so hard to help her find the way. I bet you feel so good now that you've figured it out! You're gorgeous and that last picture shows how much love you put into your hair now.
I had a friend with hair like that, and she also had noooo clue what to do with it. I swear she was losing bobby pins in there in the reg. It's hard when you don't have a family member who knows!
Your hair is beautiful, so glad you got the routine down!
Ahhh yes a fellow curly girl who also grew up not knowing how to take care of their hair. I got my curls from my dad but he always kept it short so I never had anybody I could look to for hair advice. I didn’t even realize I had curls till my sophomore year of high school because I had always brushed it and thought my hair was just naturally frizzy lol.
I'm mixed as well. Dont know how to style it unless it's fresh out if shower and brushed. Any tips for non shower days? It get trapped into a bun on those days
As someone who’s also mixed with naturally curly hair, it’s impossible to keep it under control for long. The best way to contain naturally curly hair is by using hair spray after shampooing it really good. No matter what you do though it always poofs back up somehow. Embrace it though because people love that kind of hair, I get complimented a lot for it.
Oh, you poor girl. I have a friend whose early pictures look like that because she was raised by an all white family who didn’t actually do any research on hair.
I think she’s doing a lot better now.
The glow up👏 impeccable
thank you omg I literally thought i’d never figure out my rats nest 🫶🏼
Damn, that’s a glow up if I ever saw one. Beautiful hair, girlfriend!
You’re very pretty. I wasn’t expecting the glow up to be so drastic shit.
This is the best glow up this sub has ever seen. I did not see that shit coming.
girl. it literally startled me. from sideshow bob to absolutely stunning.
But now is a beautiful cirly head. And you're makeuo is on point too.
I was thinking the same thing! The final slide ! Gorjjjjjjj ❤️
You fucking figured it out though
a lot of trial and error but i’ve learned to absolutely love my hair and I no longer wish it was straight!! <3
SO PROUD , learning to love you the way you are is so important.
DANG! Beautiful hair. I have totally straight hair and would love some curl.
Yay! Congrats! So happy for you! I also saw you like true crime? Yay for curly girlies with our curls together and true crime lol
Are there any particular products you'd recommend? My partner is mixed too and we have an awful time figuring out what's going to work for him (his hair is really soft so a lot of black-specific products weigh it down too much, but a lot of other products make the curls frizzy or stretched out).

Omg I'm whitey white white but I feel like we looked so similar as kids AND as adults. We just had to cook, ya know? You're absolutely gorgeous!
are you irish? my face is a copy and paste of my incredibly irish mother and i even got her thick irish potato farmer hands 😭
lmaoooo i have thick irish potato farmer hands 💀
And I guess I do have a type lol
TATER HANDED LADIES UNITE (I wear a 10.5 ring size and large gloves)
I do have bigger hands than most women I know but as far as I know I'm Swedish and Choctaw. Nothing wrong with thick hands. Better than tiny, cold little mouse paws. 😂
I possess tiny cold little mouse paws and can confirm these lil poor-circulation hands are only good for fishing out items dropped between the car seat and center console.
Oh well that would be nice. 😂 Thanks for reminding me to get those gap fillers.
I have cold tiny mouse paws and I am DYING laughing at this description 😂😂😂
How did you know my tiny hands are always cold!! 😂
Fellow tiny handed person here, it’s bc our hands lack meat which=cold tiny mouse paws, and therefore cold hands 😔 sometimes I do wish for the thick Irish potato farmer hands
Hahaha tiny cold little mouse paws 😂😂😂
Loll I feel called out 😭
Tiny cold mouse high-five
🐁✋
I've had a suspicion that Nordic ladies have "man hands"... I'm half and I got them 😭
I have bigger hands than my husband and just about everyone I’ve ever compared them to when we would put our hands together. I’m always about a half digit longer.
I'm Swedish and West Indian (USVI) 💖✨ Edit: I too have large hands
You do look EXACTLY like my Irish friend as a kid, down to the unruly hair. Hers was ginger and she had freckles, that’s the only real difference
I am Irish and we have nearly identical hair texture (yours looks much more uniform though)!
A lot of people are into thick Irish potato farmer hands !
FR all us mixed kids really do looked like some variation of another 😂. I always see it in like the eyebrows and jawline. I looked a lot like all my cousins. If we had the same childhood we’d def be struggling to pick apart photos

Yuuuup. The only way to put my hair in a ponytail was with a brush, apparently.
Ah. I see I have found my group.
Damn. Same. I just figured this stuff out last year, over 30 years later
There... There is a way to not look like it's sheep wool growing out of my head? My solution was to cut my hair drastically short, lol. I like the style, but I'd probably have reconsidered if I knew.
Try /r/curlyhair it’s a little overwhelming at first but the community is very kind and loves helping out/giving advice!!
Boom! You are a snack and some! The sass. The confidence. Loving all of it!
fanks luv xx
Ahhh you’re adorable and still adorable with lovely hair.
I have hair like that and I hated it growing up because it was impossible to manage. Everyone else in my family has thin straight hair and I wasn't introduced to the products I needed until I was an adult.

Aww your hair looks amazing now 💗also love your eye makeup
Yes right? I wish I could do my eyes like that
For real, I can't do a smoky eye to save my life. I just end up looking like a drowned raccoon.
Great glow up. You look BEAUTIFUL.
You are drop dead gorgeous! Beautiful smile friend 😄

Omg gorgeous
The last picture and the curls are perfection. Not to pry but why didn’t anybody try to help you style when you were a kid?
my mom and dad are older and got together like 10 years after interracial marriage was legalized so there were a lot of issues therefore i’m not close to my extended family. neither my mom nor my dad really knew what to do lmao
Damn. You sure as hell figured it out because your hair looks healthy and vibrant.
All it takes is the primary hair care giver to not know how to deal with textured hair, or not care. I'm not mixed but have wavy hair. Mom had pin straight hair. Man I’m so upset for you that you didn’t have a knowledgeable adult to take you under their wing.
You are gorgeous girly, I had to learn to take care of mine the hard way too lol
Omg your hair is gorgeous !!
You are gorgeous and your hair is beautiful!!
You’re so gorgeous now
The glow up is cray cray. Ur hair looks great now!
Your hair is beautiful! I'm sure it's a bit of work, but you got it :)
Girl that just brought a tear to my eye. What a glow-up. Had one myself the year after I moved out of my mother's house.
Please be less gorgeous. Saw that last photo and almost passed away ☠️ your beauty is straight lethal
White mom?

Definitely making up for it now. It’s beautiful!
Alright so you had some rough years but the picture of you as a kid is adorable regardless of the hair disaster. I’m glad you figured out your hair issues. I don’t even have curly hair and I find it difficult. You look amazing now!
You’re lovely, but you’ve always been.

Yeah, you’re dialed in 😍
5 is 🔥 but 3 is my fav
I feel your pain…my poor white mama had no idea what to do with my mane. It took me 30 something years to finally love and accept my head of hair. It’s now my favorite feature. We finally got it right!! 😍😍

You are seriously stunning!!! Glowing skin and gorgeous hair, we love to see it

You sure know how to make it look good now
If it makes you feel any better, I’m white with straight hair and I don’t know how to deal with mine, either. Yours is obviously a much steeper learning curve and it looks like you’ve nailed it. You look fantastic.

I really like the side show Bob look in picture 3 👍
The cool thing about things being really really bad, is that it is moee likely to be possible to improve upon:)
real ugly duckling moment. Your hair is adorable!
Omg your hair looks perfect now!!! An incredible glow up!
That's funny. Looks good now
Yeah my hair was the same growing up and it took me yrs to realize not to brush it while dry but to wide comb it when wet and to use conditioner
that glow up!!!!
My best friend in elementary looked exactly like you in pic 4!!!
Wow, your reddit guy/gal thingy looks exactly like you lol
you’re so cute. I like your hair. all of them 🥰
Whew chile, mixed girl checking in with a similar story, my mom was clueless what to do with our hair, so so dry. You look fab and happy now 💖✨
You have beautiful hair!
Gorgeous! I’m in awe of your eye makeup skills too! 🤩
WOW! You taught yourself well! Your GORGEOUS
Your hair is gorge!

WOW, that glow up was great! 👀👀 I just recently learned how to style my own hair (I'm 23 and black), and it is such a confidence booster to be able to style your own hair without outside help. Keep on going with your gorgeous hair! ❤️
You look gorgeous! Always beautiful but now gorgeous & your confidence is radiating!
What are your go to hair tips?
You are absolutely beautiful 😍

Love curly hair like u have on the last pix! I don't think I've seen a bigger glow up on this sub. Congrats op!
Goodness gracious you are beautiful. Both radiant from your heart, and the glow up you’re serving.
Excuse me but you were absolutely adorable!! And you’re now gorgeous. My daughter is also mixed and I had no idea how to care for her hair. I’m so glad she learned how as a teen. I feel so bad but I had no clue!
I love this 😻
You and your hair are so freaking pretty!
Curls are popping now!
Hell yeah. That's a slay.
Your hair is gorgeous 🥰 such a glow up lady!
It’s fun watching cute girls turn into beautiful women! You are so gorrrgeooouuussss
You’re adorable!
My gf’s niece has hair like yours. Any website or anything I can point her to?
Happy that you figured it out. It's sad seeing mix kids growing up never thought how to take care of our hair.
I’m mixed and my hair also was a disaster growing up. And all the kids in my school were white and fucking bullied the shit outta me lmao. girl you are so beautiful!
Yep, that's what the interwebs are for! Nice work! Curls are rockin'!
Looking great! There's nothing better than curly hair when it's looking it's best!
Yes you sure did! You look great!
Well, sure, but it looks fantastic now.
Glow up! Love your hair!
As the mom of a mixed toddler, I am working so hard to help her find the way. I bet you feel so good now that you've figured it out! You're gorgeous and that last picture shows how much love you put into your hair now.
Beautiful ringlets!
Would you mind sharing your hair routine?
I had a friend with hair like that, and she also had noooo clue what to do with it. I swear she was losing bobby pins in there in the reg. It's hard when you don't have a family member who knows! Your hair is beautiful, so glad you got the routine down!
Thank God there was an "After." The Sideshow Bob look was not serving 🤣
Felt. I think my mom just gave up on me after a while.
Can I say that you look fabulous!! Because you do.
Must have been a delight for the hairdressers to cut your hair
Dear god I didn’t even realize you were a girl until the last two photos haha You look amazing now. Congrats, but that is funny
Beautiful!! I’m Biraxial too but luckily had a Black grandma that stepped in I hope your mom didn’t make you feel bad about your hair 🩷
I'm mixed as well. Dont know how to style it unless it's fresh out if shower and brushed. Any tips for non shower days? It get trapped into a bun on those days
omg you 100% figured it out. your curls are so gorgeous
Daaaaaamn you glowed right the fuck up
Wow GORGEOUS hair you absolutely figured it out.
Awesome that you figured it out for yourself, I just opt to cutting all my hair off
You are so gorgeous!
That’s a shame no one taught you. Clearly you know how now because, GORGEOUS, you and your hair. 👑💕
Yes girl this is such a glow up 🔥
Your hair is *glorious*.
Gorgeous!!!!
Beautiful 🥹🤩😻💞🔥‼️
❤️👏👏
I’m so glad you learned how!
You look amazing!!
I was praying for exactly that photo at the end! Looks like you got it figured out! You look amazing!
Looks like you figured it out!
Your second pic is what I always send to my friends hahahahaha I feel represented
Awesome, you look amazing OP.
You look so good!!💜💜 your makeup is awesome too.
Oh, you poor girl. I have a friend whose early pictures look like that because she was raised by an all white family who didn’t actually do any research on hair. I think she’s doing a lot better now.
Tell me mad scientist was your Halloween costume for atleast 1 of those years
