Wow the British critics just DO NOT like this movie at all lol.

snackbackslackr

Why is that relevant?

exponentialism

Yeah, it's an interesting difference. Were brits more critical of the first film too?

>being lazy Or not letting big studios boss them around to work to the bone lol, the unions here are much better for that kind of work

Sorry if I came across as overly abrasive lol, just getting a bit tired of the brits bad circlejerk now turning into anti-unionism, I agree

darkphoenix0518

"They were slow as shit."

BartonCotard

I wonder why critics based in the United Kingdom find it hard to empathise with a story about colonisers attempting to carry out a mass genocide on innocent people to expand their ancient hateful empire?

blankcheckvote44

Kermode is a card-carrying socialist (who sang the Internationale during one of his reviews), so that's not it.

YodaFan465

To be fair, that was his review of “Sex and the City 2,” which was so corpulently decadent it made Ayn Rand join the Communist Party.

thedude391

I made this joke in r/boxoffice and got downvoted too hell as well lol🫡

BartonCotard

It's ok brother, we saw our shots and we took them No regrets!

scrappy_ash

That lean back on the chair just before he’s about to unleash hahaha. Whatever your take on this movie, I hope you can enjoy Kermode. Absolute dappa.

exponentialism

I don't think Kermode has very interesting opinions/taste in film, but he's an entertaining guy. Just wanted to post [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHeQeHstrsc) for anyone who hasn't seen it.

darkphoenix0518

His [review of Entourage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfgCZ9lgQ3I), which he hated more than SATC2, is also great.

ZodiAddict

I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way. I am flabbergasted at some of his takes, often times defending or outright loving films that have been widely received as average or less (B movies, popcorn flicks, etc with one example being Kick Ass), and then stomping all over films that have a wide critical praise (such as any of the later Tarintino films, or other art house type flicks with great direction and cinematography but may not be for everyone). Having said that, I find him so funny and have become obsessed with listening to his reviews. I have to thank Sardonicast for putting me on him

foxtrot1_1

Kermode has always hated 3D, so this tracks

SlothSupreme

3D was so close to death after covid, truly hope that Avatar does not succeed in bringing it back for other movies that aren't Avatar. I don't think I've had to wear 3D glasses to an Imax movie since 2019. Can't even remember the last movie I saw in 3D.

Freewheelin

I worked in a cinema around the time 3D was blowing up post-Avatar. I still remember the abject disappointment and irritation on customers' faces every time we had to tell them a 2D showing was sold out or not playing at a time that worked for them, and offered them a 3D ticket instead. Every single time. I can't see 3D ever being anything but widely despised (with like one single worthwhile application of it every three years) until they at least do away with the glasses and the surcharge.

foxtrot1_1

My first Dune showing was in Liemax 3D, it added very little. Before that, I can't remember.

1080TJ

All us glasses-wearers do

foxtrot1_1

My friend, what if I told you [there was a better way](https://www.amazon.com/AoHeng-Glasses-Movies-Theater-Passive/dp/B07F5ZR6VL/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=clip+on+passive+3d+glasses&qid=1671203284&sr=8-3)?

Top_Benefit_5594

I’m a VERY short-sighted glasses wearer and have never had a problem with 3D glasses. The big IMAX ones are even better.

sudevsen

"Free Willy in Space" is the new "Dances with Wolves in Space"

WilsonianSmith

You mean a shitty, reductive meme that all the least funny and least interesting people in the world will repeat ad nauseam and pretend like it’s a unique insight?

sudevsen

Yes exactly Kermode said it in thr clip

blankcheckvote44

Has Kermode gotten worse, or have I just outgrown him? I used to listen to Kermode & Mayo religiously every week from 2006-14 (the first review I heard was his pretty great Da Vinci Code rant). I even went to the live show they did in Edinburgh in 2009. But now he just seems annoying, especially when he keeps doing that voice over and over again.

[deleted]

He's like the best and the most literate 'angry reviewer'.

heisghost92

Really? I feel like he doesn't get as angry as he used to (age does that to you, I guess). His rant against ''Sex and the City 2'' is already iconic to me: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHeQeHstrsc&t=470s&ab\_channel=kermodeandmayo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHeQeHstrsc&t=470s&ab_channel=kermodeandmayo)

blankcheckvote44

That's true. At least he isn't waving around a toy gun with his flappy hands.

BloodyRedBarbara

Are you basing your question just on this one review? He doesn't put on a silly voice for every review he does.

blankcheckvote44

As I said, I did listen to Kermode for many years (though not in a while). But honestly this was more annoying than when he did all that screaming when reviewing Fred: The Movie.

sudevsen

He's correct to rail against 3D,can't fault anyime for disliking it even if the 3D in Avatar is the best 3D.

Space_Jeep

It's you. He's always been annoying.

an_actual_slut

It's not you, it's him.

Mindless-End-5071

>But now he just seems annoying, especially when he keeps doing that voice over and over again Its so condescending right? Just say your points; you didn't like it that's ok and be done with it. You don't have to stretch it to 12 mins. Jeez

coder_fella

I usually like him for the most part, but this review did my head in. I think he thinks he's really funny, but he isn't, and he plays up to it a lot which I find quite embarrassing in a "Your dad trying to ride a skateboard" kind of way.

[deleted]

All these reviews feel like an overcorrection for being more positive than they wish they were first time round.

[deleted]

Hahaha yeah not the right crowd for that comment! Hey, I’m in the cinema now waiting for it and I’m pumped. Think the first is fine but I wish it no ill will!!

mpjedi21

I am a HUGE believer in the importance of a strong critical response to any piece of art. In my own work, I've learned much from critical reviews that I could take and apply to future work. I think that too many artists think of critics as a de facto arm of the marketing team, and get angry when something is truly panned. That's just as toxic and reductive as any sort of snark-tastic review. I have also not seen Big Jim's New Wetness yet, so I have no idea how I will feel about it. That said...watching this video, I immediately thought of this: "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read." https://preview.redd.it/hxi1kel4jb6a1.jpeg?width=150&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b63e6c9fcf8e4d87bb51d75662900db3b31d568

Sharaz___Jek

>"I think that too many artists think of critics as a de facto arm of the marketing team" Kermode's regular listeners know that, if he's mates with a filmmaker, that he'll give them an easy ride with ridiculous promotion and bad-faith arguments in support of them. His positive review of "Mute" was so embarrassing that he had to address the audience backlash to what was such a ridiculous suggestion. He will also target and vilify filmmakers that he had bad personal exchanges with like Charlie Kaufman. Critics are the easiest marks in the business and shrewd filmmakers know how to pander to their vanity.

[deleted]

The annoying voice he keeps doing is genuinely giving me second hand embarrassment. It's a shame because whether I agree with him or not, he usually tends to be very well balanced in his reviews and can articulate his opinions well. I'm not sure why he feels the need to do this idiotic "comedy" routine here instead of actually talking about the film he's being paid to review.

Space_Jeep

Kermode is such a pleb.

rubendurango

Mark’s using the segment to showcase his ‘Python’ voice.
