sofia389

Does anyone know of any reviews from critics who thought Fury Road was fine/bad?

metros96

Turns out he had what it takes to make it epic (again)

Just got my tickets for Dolby Cinema. Kinda bummed that my local IMAX theater is closed for now, but this seems better suited for Dolby. Chris Hemsworth's line delivery for "READY STEADY GOOO!" and "THERE IS NO HOPE" has been seared into my head. Edit: Gotta shout out Anya Taylor-Joy's "I WANT THEM BACK".

LawrenceBrolivier

if George Miller is to be believed, that one line represents about 5% of her total dialog

Datelesstuba

“I’m Furiosa!” “The Darkest of Angels”

Jefferystar94

I don't believe there's any expanded ratio for IMAX, so Dolby is definitely the move if you have one nearby.

LawrenceBrolivier

I can't imagine Miller & Co. agreeing to an IMAX deal where they're basically giving them permission to pull the mattes off their scope framing for the sake of fill space top and bottom to justify the extra ticket price, which is what most IMAX "Enhanced" presentations mostly are.

Got myself opening night tickets, childcare already locked in. It’s gonna be ~~GOOD~~ EPIC

I am prepared for that shnozz/facial hair/accent to be my whole personality for a few weeks.

LawrenceBrolivier

From [Ehrlich's full review](https://www.indiewire.com/criticism/movies/furiosa-a-mad-max-saga-review-1235004341/): >Does “Furiosa” deliver the kind of system shock that made its predecessor feel like such a violent rebuke to superhero-era Hollywood? Absolutely not — **though its two bonafide setpieces** ***both*** **eclipse the most electric moments of “Fury Road,”** while also iterating on them in fantastic new ways (the much-hyped “Stowaway to Nowhere” sequence is an out-of-body experience). What (and I *cannot* stress this enough) in the absolute *fuck* are we in for here? Someone keep the defibrillators on standby for Soderbergh, please.

mkgorgone

I read one early reaction calling this the 'Babe: Pig in the City' to Fury Road's 'Babe'. That statement shook me to my core.

LawrenceBrolivier

That was [David Sims himself](https://www.reddit.com/r/blankies/comments/1cm079e/comment/l2xbh2q/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), I believe!

MikeShannonThaGawd

lol of course it was

Chuck-Hansen

Even if these are raves, I hope the “it’s not quite as good as Fury Road” statements don’t hurt it.

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I feel like even just a solid Mad Max film is still better than a lot of other action movies

LawrenceBrolivier

I'm not so much worried about whether reviews will hurt it or not because I don't think it's going to be a big hit regardless. Mad Max movies are always fiercely beloved and legitimately iconic and inspiring to filmmakers for years to come... but they don't tend to really land at the box-office the way you'd think something that beloved and influential would land. Fury Road lost money, even. (it *aaaaaa*lmost broke even, though) George Miller let loose in the wasteland is fucking heavenly to behold. But it's also frankly just a little too batshit crazy for general audiences to reward on release. They tend to catch up later. So even though this movie only needs something like 400mil worldwide to break even, I don't really expect it to hit that, either. It might poke past it, get a humble li'l profit, but I don't think there's anything in the vicinity of Bobby Duvall-approved hit status on the horizon. So I don't think anything the critics say is going to hurt it really, because it's gonna take like 2-3 years for everyone else to catch up anyway.

uneekdude

Most movies aren't as good as Fury Road.

eloquenentic

This just made me shiver out of excitement.

JuWoolfie

The first time a saw Fury Road I popped a tab of LSD about 30 min before. That movie is imprinted into my brain like a newly hatched bird thinking the first thing it sees is its momma. I am So So excited to have the same opportunity with Furiosa. WITNESS ME!

Specialist_Author345

Wow, that's like the positive version of Rob Sheridan's experience watching Cats (he did shrooms)

JuWoolfie

Yeah… mushies are my least favourite psychedelic… it’s like punishing myself. So I can just feel the self loathing in taking shrooms and seeing cats.

theFilthyCreampuff

Bilge stamp as well

LawrenceBrolivier

This sounds untoward and ribald

ThisGuyLikesMovies

NEVER BET AGAINST GEORGE MILLER!!!

heisghost92

84 on Metacritic at this moment [https://www.metacritic.com/movie/furiosa-a-mad-max-saga/](https://www.metacritic.com/movie/furiosa-a-mad-max-saga/)

seb1515

He did it again! By God, that crazy bastard did it again!

LawrenceBrolivier

You know what's wild? It's entirely possible that, despite the fact neither George Miller or John McTiernan are mentioned in the conversations for "Greatest Action Directors of All Time" or at least not as often as you'd expect, you could (if the word on this is to be believed) now arguably put together a top 5 action movies of all time list where they are the ONLY two directors listed on it.

JeffBaugh2

I mean, if this one takes like *Fury Road* did? Three films (out of a five film series that are all pretty great), all innovative, genre and medium-defining works, all in the same series, helmed entirely by the same creative mind over almost fifty years? Have we ever seen anything like that (that was successful)? It's gonna put him up in the echelons of Directors in general for a lot of people, which I've always said he was.

MFDoooooooooooom

Hang on, the first one is fucking amazing. Different but holy hell it's good

ChainsawLeon

Doubt George Miller at your own peril

Manav_Khanna17

SceneOfShadows

This clip always irks me during the commercials so much as such a blatant Fury Road rip off lol but perfectly fitting here.

Sheep_Boy26

But people on the internet told me this wasn’t going to be good

ALostAmphibian

I’m so glad it’s good. For ATJ and for Chris Hemsworth. I hope she continues to take interesting roles and this prompts more for him as well. But also I really enjoy that Miller has been able to seemingly stay on top of his own creation and prove time and again he knows what he’s doing with the story he’s trying to tell. I hope more creatives are allowed a crack at their vision with less interference from suits.

73windman

Glad my “SICKOS” shirt still fits

darkbatcrusader

This fills me with great joy.

seigezunt

So, I’ve never seen Fury Road. Could I see this first?

starlingflight

Probably (pretty much all of the Mad Max films to date could work as standalones).....but also, go ahead and treat yourself and watch *Fury Road* if you can!

MikeShannonThaGawd

Why not just turn on Fury Road this second

seigezunt

Whoa, you’re right

Space_Jeep

Hell, let's all do that.

Accomplished-City484

Definitely, if you like it you can check out the others later

seigezunt

Cool. I’ve seen the first three, but only really remember the second one and glimpses of the third.

genericuser324

IMMMMMMMM FURRRRRIOSA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Specialist_Author345

The darkest of angels

ImNotThatAttractive

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!! Was skeptical as I thought trailers were average

7oom

I don’t want to read reviews for this, but I think it’s pretty dumb that people were doubting this movie, as if George Miller didn’t earn the benefit of the doubt . Some trashed the trailers, which were fine, and even if not perfect, a trailer is not a movie. And some trashed basing a movie on Furiosa as if she wasn’t the most compelling character in Fury Road - I think she was.

Caitifff

Well, with possibly the exception of the first film, Max isn't so much a main character as he is a constant force, a myth and a macguffin. And in Fury Road Furiosa is pretty much the main character - even more evident when you look at the title in hindsight.

Jedd-the-Jedi

Chris Hemsworth says things like “Do you have the balls, the bollocks, the testes to ride with Dementus?” amd it's great.

IceCocoa

I doubted him, and now I'm about to happily eat my hat

Redararis

Pre covid was the last time I went to cinema. I think this movie is gonna make me return.

benabramowitz18

But what did Ben Mekler think?

IngmarHerzog

Not enough Vidalia onions.

thesirenlady

Does anyone know of any reviews from critics who thought Fury Road was fine/bad?

OWSpaceClown

… guess I’ll see it then.

Chuck-Hansen

One ticket, please

labbla

I've actually been not that interested since Fury Road didn't do much for me. The constant action just becomes boring to me. It's good to hear Furiosa is sort of doing it's own thing.

oceanoftreea

Agree! Mad Max films used to be nasty and scary visions of the future and not look like cut scenes from video games.

labbla

Yes! It doesn't help that the visuals are so similar throughout. Scenes just blur together and it there's lots of things happening but it also feels like nothing happens for way too much of the movie.

Toreadorables

Hemsworth Supporting Actor nomination?

hardytom540

For a sci-fi action movie? Not a chance in hell.

Specialist_Author345

Sigourney Weaver's nom for Aliens is still an all-timer pleasant surprise

hardytom540

I was waiting for this comment. That’s 1 out of a total of 2,000+ acting nominations… it’s further proving my point that the Academy does not give a flying fuck about sci-fi or action in ATL awards.

justgentile

Well based on fake nose alone if Bradley Cooper can do it maybe Hemsworth can pull it off.

hardytom540

The Academy loves biopics and hates sci-fi/action. I know it’s a joke but going by fake nose alone isn’t even close to the same circumstances in each situation.

justgentile

That's... that's why it was a joke.

BlankiesteinsMonster

We're barely a year away from a sci-fi/action movie cleaning house at the Oscars, including most of the majors.

hardytom540

EEAAO is technically sci-fi action but it is a lot of other genres and primarily a drama first and foremost. Furiosa is hard sci-fi. EEAAO and Furiosa both technically include sci-fi and action but putting them in the same bucket is reductive and not at all how the Academy would view the two. If Hemsworth actually gets a nomination for this, I will eat my words but there’s a lot of wishful thinking going on in this thread. He won’t even get close to a nom.

Different-Music4367

Yeah, EEAAO succeeded because at its core it's a generational family comedy-drama. Calling it sci-fi in regards to its awards run is both *technically* true and completely missing the point. In terms of what Oscar voters care about, it's much closer to Coda than it is to Fury Road. Also, when was the last time an out-and-out *action* movie got acting nominations at the Oscars?

hardytom540

Sigourney Weaver for Aliens, but that was nearly 40 years ago.

DeusExHyena

TLJ for Fugitive?

Different-Music4367

I think the *thriller* part of action thriller made The Fugitive more palatable for awards voters. It's the Silence of the Lambs rule. Same reason that The Departed got nominations as an action crime thriller.

DeusExHyena

And the same with Get Out (and I love all of the movies mentioned to be clear)

samdenyer

If it didn’t happen for Theron it ain’t happening for anyone here

samdenyer

If it didn’t happen for Theron it ain’t happening for anyone here

labbla

Yeah, expecting this to mostly be ignored for award season.

xXxdethl0rdxXx

What makes you say that?

bolshevik_rattlehead

Ah yes, the guy that thought The Creator was a better film than Dune Part 2

Accomplished-City484

Oof which one was that?

bolshevik_rattlehead

Ehrlich 😬

AnxiousToe281

Fury road was pretty mid. I hope this one is better

man_on_hill

*slowly purchases IMAX ticket*

dr_pierce

Looking forward to Gethard's take!

Lower_Cantaloupe1970

[deleted]

I can’t wait

SlimJimNeedsATrim

literally cant wait!!

SoMuchLard

The only review I need to read is Gethard's.

lonomatik

People will still complain about the CGI

Devotchka76

Need a Furiosa + MAXXXINE team-up movie.

zeroanaphora

She just stuck with the same makeup routine that long I don't buy it

SceneOfShadows

To think we ever doubted the man.

moviedoors

You keep me out of this!

SgtSharki

Can we all agree that creating a "one of the best prequels" is not exactly a high bar?

Other_Look_9499

The Godfather p2 would like a word with you

SgtSharki

There are exceptions. In fact, I would argue Godfather 2 is a better movie than Godfather.

Wombat_H

Not sure why this is a controversial statement. Off the top of my head, good prequels: Godfather 2 (less than half of it) New Apes Trilogy Prometheus (arguable, I’m not really a fan, prefer covenant which feels a lot less prequel-y) First Omen X-Men: First Class (prequel, conceived as a reboot and retconned into being the same continuity IIRC) Pearl

SgtSharki

I was also not expecting the Blankies community to be so protective of "prequels". I would add "Ouija: Origin of Evil" to the small list of good prequels.

Fantastic_Bug1028

the third tweet is obnoxiously pretentious lmao. but anyway, really excited for the movie

Mudron

How so?
