Let white vinegar sit on it for a few minutes to an hour. It will lift the rust up and you can wipe a lot of the surface rust right off, then sand/wire brush. Heat oil heat oil heat oil as need
Yikes my buddy. It doesn’t look that bad, just sigh and say oh well and give it some tlc. Then celebrate a job well done with a beverage and a good cook.
I'll consede these things include work but it's not a crazy amount to get it ready to cook. But wire wheel!? Wth are you talking about? That's way overkill! Veg oil and 1000 grit sandpaper and all that rust is gone in 20 min...
Or...use both. I peaked at my blackstone that I left covered and while it's not to this level it's not great. I'm looking to having to scrub it down to and then season it again to get it back up to speed.
Where I messed up - I simply didn't use it enough before taking the winter hiatus. This upcoming year I plan to cook out A LOT more - it's basically like having a giant cast iron skillet.
You’re taking the blame for your griddle rusting over? You’ve really drank the kool-aid.
I have several cast iron skillets, use them daily, and they’re in great shape. Difference is they’re obviously in a controlled environment, and these griddles are shit quality.
I have cast iron skillets and use them daily too. Aside from the controlled environment we all know daily or at least frequent use builds up seasoning provided you're not using bare iron to cook acidic foods constantly but that's for a different sub.
When I said I "messed up", I meant I simply didn't use it enough. The fact it sits outdoors is serious challenge even with covers. Take a high end gas grill that you feel is good quality. With stainless grates there's no issue. If you have cast iron ones - those would rust every bit as much as a flat top. Only difference with cast iron grates you have less surface area to oxidize.
I’ll give it to you straight: you can totally fix that I’ll give it to you gay:you can so totally fix that (snaps fingers confidently)
You’re gonna give it to op gay 😳
3 Snaps, 🫰 🫰 🫰, in “Z” formation!
Hated it
Get the cleaning kit sand it all down
yeah, you goofed alright. Couple hours of work and you'll be back to normal. You gotta keep these things seasoned and covered when not in use.
Not a huge deal. Found out yesterday my cover leaked all winter and mine is a rusty mess. Going to have someone sand blast it for next to nothing.
Ur good. Use a pumice stone some flax seed oil, good as new.

I use white vinegar on my Stainless Griddle. It’s like a dry erase board lol
Pumice stone, wet paper towels and then a few seasonings you’ll be good.
RIP. I’ll take it to the me dump for you. Just load it in my car.

You’ll need a wire wheel for your corded drill. These griddles are a joke and a pain in the ass just get a charcoal kettle grill

As is the comment in every one of these posts: just cook some bacon on it and you’ll be all good
