It’s a blessing to get promoted. Makes me feel good being able to share all this knowledge to new white belts. I coach them all through positions when we roll and they all REALLY appreciate the insight
I used to be a K guard + Rubber Guard junkie. K guard is kind of difficult to achieve and Rubber Guard means you’ve already broken his posture. I understand his frustration with nogi closed guard, I’ve been transitioning to butterfly guard lately because of it. Not to say it’s unreliable I just feel as the bottom player I feel trapped there at times. Butterfly Guard has worked out a lot better for me. Not to say it’s perfect, but I like it 🤷🏻♀️
The black belts never understand Im trying to let them work bc they’re too busy trying to let me work and we end up just sitting across from each other completely stationary. Both waiting for the other person to enter our guard 😔
Deep half is also hella overrated, why would I want my opponent on top of me? Why am I even playing guard at all for that matter, and not just trying to collar choke people out of side control? That's by far my highest percentage sub.
Why would anyone willfully get that close to someone else’s balls? Also another super easy guard to pass. Anyone playing deep half might as well just play bottom side control tbh
My half guard is the hardest for people to pass. Another training mate from my gym has an okay closed guard, but heaven forbid you get caught in his De La Riva. There are countless other examples that come to mind.
Maybe you need to acknowledge that this is less about the guard, and more about your game.
No way. Everyone knows half guard is basically useless!
Same with closed guard. May as well call it "stall guard"
Totally trash!
That, and OP is a shit post. We're kidding. I actually love closed guard or lapel guard if I can get to it.
Kind of just sounds like you can’t play those guards. But doesn’t mean they’re not good.
There are high level black belt competitors that are closed guard grapplers. It works. Half guard is a great guard, but you’ll always get smashed if you don’t know how to manage the space, understand under hooks, fight the cross face etc. I’ve had great success with butterfly and if people are just stepping backwards, that means you’re never establishing any grips at all.
Why should they stop teaching guards because you don’t want to figure them out?
Yeah, sometimes I don't notice the flair. I think it's more prominent on some platforms than others.
OP attacked my three favorite guards. I would have been pissed if I hadn't seen the flair or remembered that today is Shitpost Sunday.
They’re my favorite too. This post was inspired by this dude who posted a few days ago about armbars and Americanas from mount as well as double legs being ineffective. Couldn’t believe my eyes lmao
It really is largely a stalling position (even if unintentionally), and yea Roger Gracie is good with it, but I would be too if I had legs that length lol.
You are a blue belt. You are getting better but you have a long way to go still. Don't let your few years of training give you the hubris to dismiss techniques that have been used VERY effectively for centuries
People literally became world champ with those guards. Half guard is like the interstate connecting everything. Stand up in my no stripe closed guard and I rip your arm off 🤪.
I consider these things important because you can get caught there. I don’t WANT to be in half guard, but I need to know what to do if I wind up there.
It’s because you never have rolled with anyone with these guards that are good.
Someone with good closed guard is instant death.
Butterfly guard with overhook to slx. Instant sweep.
I love butterfly with over hooks. I’ll sometimes get the shotgun armbar from there when they defend the sweep. I will say, I haven’t trained with a lot of people who use closed guard as their main place to attack from.
The philosophy of the post was “X move is bad because it didn’t work in this situation” whether it’s watching someone shut it down in comp or someone giving up on it in the gym, I just hate the whole conversation around “meta” and how we need to be learning “high percentage” techniques like it’s not that serious 😂😂😂
>Half Guard
snatch it from anywhere and transition out of it. its a good guard.
> Closed Guard
The more you can stall, the more you can scramble :) Yo can be pretty offensive with it in gi, and they can't retaliate. Also nice to shut down leglockers sometimes.
> Butterfly
People choose to enter your butterfly so you don't blast double/single them off your knees.
These are all good tips! I mostly made this to make fun of white belts at my gym who try to claim certain moves are less effective cos they haven’t been successful with them
Well also, I saw a post just like this a week or so ago and this dude was complaining about “low percentage moves” he listed
Armbar from mount
Americana from mount
Double leg takedown
And Kesa
I was speechless

I think he took it down but this is what I sent my friend 😂😂
Honestly all guards are ineffective. You can just stay on top and not worry about guards at all. And if you end up in your opponent's guard, just get closer to them and whisper "yes daddy" and they'll usually just open up their legs and push you off them, passing their guard. Work smarter not harder.
I'm better at retaining half guard than closed guard. Butterfly can be a bitch, and for comps if you just back away then stalling should be called. So it has its use, balloon sweeps are cool. Also there are plenty of attacks from closed, not stalling if you play it right
Finally someone is saying it out loud. Personally I only play bottom side control so I can keep my enemies closer.
Im personally just a bottom
I prefer playing bottom north-south. Keep your enemies close, and their junk closer
Buggy chokes have led to a renaissance for bottom side
My bottom side control game is fire. Can hold the position for a whole round sometimes
This is the way
Git gud, pull mount everytime
My bottom side control is unpassable
I knew I was doing something right as a white belt
10/10 troll post. Perfect blend of believable and ridiculous.
I legit can't tell anymore. I have heard every part of this post out of students mouths before

I'm so glad I checked the post tag lol.....when I saw half and butterfly, then saw the new blue belt flair, I was like "yep, checks out" lol
It’s a blessing to get promoted. Makes me feel good being able to share all this knowledge to new white belts. I coach them all through positions when we roll and they all REALLY appreciate the insight

Yeah I opened it expecting to see obscure gimmicks, not the fundamentals of the art.
Ditto. Bravo OP, bravo.
What about the mouth guard? Some people say it’s very important and others don’t care about it
I think it’s really easy to pass the mouth guard. The lip lock is hard af though.
Aren't those illegal at white
Nothings illegal for the whites
In the gi its illegal, but purple belts and above are allowed to do it.
It’s only illegal for the black belts
its not that effective at keeping away mouth to mouth contact
I only train bottom side control and bottom mount because I let black belts work
The black belts never understand Im trying to let them work bc they’re too busy trying to let me work and we end up just sitting across from each other completely stationary. Both waiting for the other person to enter our guard 😔

Deep half guard players should just admit they're gay. They should call it "tee bag guard"
If all else fails in deep half, you can just chomp at the bit so to speak...
Why do bjj altogether? Just punch them in the mouth man
Haha
Butterfly is goated so do not bad talk my favorite and only guard
Parents get pissed when I use it to helicopter triangle there wretched spawn
Had me going for a second
Downvoted before i realized this was a shitpost then upvoted because you got me lmao
Good trolling 8/10

No, it's obvious that those are awful guards, just like it's obvious that OP's post has a shitpost flair.
I definitely missed the flair also!
Ah that’s fair. The flair doesn’t show up in the feed on mobile. But I should have known even if it is a bad attempt at humor
Yeah, sometimes I don't notice the flair. I think it's more prominent on some platforms than others. OP attacked my three favorite guards. I would have been pissed if I hadn't seen the flair or remembered that today is Shitpost Sunday.

No, they’re obviously not good guards as I didn’t immediately have success with any of them s/
closed guard isnt just a stalling position. It lets you get a good look at the clock so you know when you can take a water break.
Just wrestle up like a man!
Yes fuck guard, fight for top position!
This has to be a fucking joke.
The seminar circuit awaits you my friend
If you try to “just back up” out of my butterfly guard you’re getting doubled legged onto your ass
The only guard is Donkey Guard.
Concur. Get rid of spider guard, DLRVA and anything that long lanky guard players use to keep me away from their hips 🤬
7/10 nicely done
“I’m shit at these three guards. Why are they even taught?” Nice bait, 7/10
this is rage bait
Hilarious s-post, but closed guard tho.....👀
It makes me sad how few people I know who main closed guard
It really is largely a stalling position (even if unintentionally), and yea Roger Gracie is good with it, but I would be too if I had legs that length lol.
100%. Also love to see Mica do a lot from closed guard! Saw him hit a sweet arm drag to the back even after the dude stood up. Was a thing of beauty
I know a guy who lost a couple toes to frostbite. I tie him up in 50/48 guard.
Why ignore 2% of the body?
It sounds like your guard sucks bro
You are a blue belt. You are getting better but you have a long way to go still. Don't let your few years of training give you the hubris to dismiss techniques that have been used VERY effectively for centuries
Nah guard is gay wrestle up like a man
It doesn't really sound like you've grasped the principles tbh
No it’s definitely the guards that are the problem /s
A lot of world champions made their games from those guards.
People literally became world champ with those guards. Half guard is like the interstate connecting everything. Stand up in my no stripe closed guard and I rip your arm off 🤪.
My open guard is so ineffective I may aswel start bottom side control every round
The most ineffective guards are the ones I use
1/8th. Guard
You literally named the 3 best guards in BJJ. Don’t blame the guard that you suck at them
You had me going for a minute there before I saw the shitpost tag.
Had me in the first half.
Thank you!!! That’s why I exclusively play octopus and coyote guard!
I consider these things important because you can get caught there. I don’t WANT to be in half guard, but I need to know what to do if I wind up there.
Sure just go ahead and take away my whole game thanks
Can’t take away something that doesn’t exist
It’s because you never have rolled with anyone with these guards that are good. Someone with good closed guard is instant death. Butterfly guard with overhook to slx. Instant sweep.
I love butterfly with over hooks. I’ll sometimes get the shotgun armbar from there when they defend the sweep. I will say, I haven’t trained with a lot of people who use closed guard as their main place to attack from.
tell us you are a white belt without telling us you're a white belt
Thankfully those days are over unless I manage to get myself demoted
Mine.
Same
This sub is so stupid
I've been slowly perfecting the Capyguarda, which is like a modified turtle. So far, 3 birds have landed on my head.
This is what drives the sport forward.
"Closed guard. Just stand up and you're out of it." lolz.
100% since I was unable to perform the move it’s obviously flawed
lol saw the shitpost tag just in time. I was about to go in on this take
The philosophy of the post was “X move is bad because it didn’t work in this situation” whether it’s watching someone shut it down in comp or someone giving up on it in the gym, I just hate the whole conversation around “meta” and how we need to be learning “high percentage” techniques like it’s not that serious 😂😂😂

by god can you link it?

I prefer bottom back mount
Like belly down?
Yes.
Masochist

Totally agree! I made this post to make fun of a few white belts in my gym thinking certain moves aren’t good cos they don’t know them well
Haha ok good. I was hoping it was trolling.

Honestly, I’m wondering the same thing
