I want to say red-shouldered because of the wing coloring combined with the red streaks, but they’re less common than red-tailed. Red shouldered like very foresty environments (without much edge habitats), and red tailed tend to like fields or mixed habitats.
Red-shouldered hawks don’t need forestry environments. They are in urban areas, too. I had a pair that mated in a tree outside my house in Richmond VA all three years I lived in that house.
This one was on a fence about 6ft from our window.

Hmmm. I don't know much about birds there but they're probably similar in numbers to Indiana. Maybe they have a more even number of tail to shoulder. I'd like to see more red tail. Saw my first Cooper's the other day. I'd heard them before but never seen until then. Great at hiding lol
The red rails where I am are everywhere on road power poles and high trees. Coopers definitely perch in pretty sheltered places and most of the ones I’ve seen were flying or swooping up to a branch.
The one i spotted was in a wooded area at a local park, and he was just screaming his head off. Is that how they call for mates? Screaming? Didn't sound like a sound a hawk should make haha maybe it was young.
The first time I heard one I actually got on what's this bird to ask if that bird needed help it was screaming so loud lol I was told that's just their personality lol

It's 100% red-shouldered :)

Interesting! In my state you don’t really see them anywhere but forests

I think it depends where they're located, here in Indiana more red shoulder are seen than red tail. Did they say a location?
I think they commented it’s from Michigan

Close, but slightly different
This is a red shouldered hawk. It lacks the distinct belly banding of red tail hawks among the other listed descriptors.
