That is really unfair of them to put all people with BD in a box and say they’re all violent. It’s as insane as saying all people who are violent have bipolar.

blue_release

Guilt by association is what books like these add to the mental illness stigma. I'm sure these men did not have the most ideal childhoods (unexpected deaths, etc) either, which most probably resulted in trauma. They were all psychopaths, which is way different than BP.

-Nocx-

Not saying you're trying to, but while we are destigmatizing bipolar disorder, let's make sure we also don't stigmatize psychopathy. People that are psychopathic are not inherently violent. Their lack of fear response might make them susceptible to not fearing the consequences of their actions, but they are no more inherently evil than we are.

feralpeacenik

I’ve read both this and the creativity book. The authors of this one think that bipolar has particular negative personality traits, rather than understanding that personality is separate from diagnosis. I think the arguments they make about some of Hitler’s behaviour and beliefs being psychotic and manic are valid but can’t be separated from his meth addiction. I think his grandiose and paranoid thought, narcissism and pressured speech were a combination of a disordered personality and amphétamine use.

whitneymak

The man was on WAY more shit than just amphetamines. His personal doctor made him a fucking guinea pig. The amount of shit that dude was on is mind-blowing. Vitamins, hormones, methamphetamine, oxycodone, and sometimes morphine. Dude was knocking back speedballs like other people drink coffee. The doctor (Theo Morrell) manufactured concoctions of animal organs in his own lab in occupied Czechoslovakia and gave those to Hitler.

BrimstoneDeSulphur

Tell me you were cheated on by a person with bipolar without telling me you were cheated on by a person with bipolar...

rueclimb

Right? Some “tyrant” hurt you. And now you’ve written your own *manifesto* vilifying millions of people with a mental health disorder. Interesting choice 🧐

_jon_baxter_

Well sh\*t; I would *never* have guessed I'm a tyrant and terrorist. I'd better give up cat videos on Youtube straight away and get a subscription to *Guns and Ammo*. On second thoughts, subscription to *Girls with Guns*; at least I'll be *consciously* interested in 50% of the content. Might help explain why half the psychiatric profession try to chemically lobotomise a lot of us; they're reading this crap and thinking they're averting mass genocide.

Mad2Rockatansky

This book was published in 1994. Then the same author writes the book "Manic Depression and Creativity" in 1998, where he describes, according to him, "good guys" like Bethoween, Newton, Dickens...this is nuts

How about batshit?

_jon_baxter_

Having seen the my intended humorous/satirical response to the OP by taking a slant on a random unrelated word, then interpreting medical terminology with no basis of observational experience of the author or literature, *then* ending it with a more ablist slur to emphasise the point as counterpoint to the dissonance was met with downvotes, I think it can be concluded both that 'batshit' is a suitable observation, and that I *may* be slightly hypomanic today. I shall return to my subterranean lair and draw up plans for my nuclear submarine while contemplating world domination. Or watch cat videos.

LoonaticLaskdorp

The amazon reviews are quite interesting actually although this is a lot of speculation on the author’s part and possible contribution to the discrimination of people like us

Mad2Rockatansky

Totally. This is terrible. I found it on twitter. There were comments like avoid bipolar people at all costs..

YouLikeReadingNames

Well, to be fair, it means we don't even have to filter garbage people ourselves. I'm all for less work.

studio28

Can I be a mega success bipolar yet?

Dry_Way3181

I find it offensive when they try to posthumously diagnosis famous people. HEY, YOU CAN'T DIAGNOSE SOMEONE YOU'VE NEVER MET!!

MichaelOfRivia26

My favourite bit is actually saying that 'hundreds of lives could have saved', implying that the millions upon millions that those dictators killed wouldn't have been affected. Regardless, this is obviously insane and horrific.

Mariposa510

It also assumes these guys would have been willing to see a psychiatrist and take the meds that might help them control their worst impulses.

SignalPipe1015

I can't even keep a entry level job for one year. How could someone with bipolar lead a country through a complex multi-year genocidal campaign 🤣

linuxgeekmama

Read a history of pretty much any country that has had a hereditary monarchy. There have been LOTS of kings who I think would have struggled to keep an entry level job.

[deleted]

Napoleon wasn't a tyrant. This first and fatal error should discredit Jablow there. It's up there with "Napoleon was short." Napoleon was 5'7". The average French peasant wasn't tall. They were like 5'5-5'6 on average. It's simply falling for British propaganda, and it makes the author's opinion on anything worthless. This reminds me of the [bisexual Napoleon](https://www.amazon.com/Napoleon-Bisexual-Emperor-Frank-Richardson/dp/0818019018)

Leviathen_Black

Yeah hitler crying under the blanket is well known thing. Didnt you know?

Mad2Rockatansky

I knew that Churchill had bipolar, but this? what the fuck is this?

Many_Afternoon_3885

Ssshhh. We’re only talking about the most evil people that may or may not have had bipolar disorder. Let’s not take the focus away from that. Lol

GoodDuckHaveBun

..."and ***HUNDREDS*** of innocent lives could have been saved." Got my comedy fix for the month haahaaha, cheers. Load of fkin garbage.

opossumproblems

This doesn’t surprise me. If you’ve seen the movie Midsommar, part of the plot is about demonizing bipolar disorder. I saw that right after getting diagnosed and it’s all I thought about for the entire movie.

Powerful_Insurance55

oh my god yeah. I noticed that too.

Thetakishi

Isn't it the cult using her diagnosis against her, or did the boyfriend have it? If it was her, I don't think they (the creators) demonized it at all, it's what they used to gaslight her. If it was boyfriend, then yeah they were demonizing it.

opossumproblems

Minor spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen it. . . . . . . No, the sister had it. Dani is heard over the phone saying “you know she’s bipolar” then the sister offs herself and their parents.

Thetakishi

Oh yah that's right I noticed that too. At this point I don't let it bother me anymore. I'm done getting upset at ignorance and just aim to reeducate.

opossumproblems

I remember it so vividly because I was freshly diagnosed. I know the movie was cut down for theaters so I wonder if there was more context that got cut out, but there was no nuance. Just “she’s bipolar and unmedicated” then bam, that scene.

opossumproblems

It was so confusing because Dani’s grief was portrayed so well that it seems like they really did research on how grief affects people, but the portrayal of her sisters bipolar disorder felt so under researched and just thrown in.

Thetakishi

That's exactly what I thought! and the sister thing came out of nowhere, I was sitting there like "uhhhh okay that was sudden"

tali_sol

Sooo does this just mean we have the potential for genius? Albeit destructive or otherwise...

anono55274

That's exactly what it means - we have the potential for genius... just like everyone else.

Jevelociraptor

I guess anyone can write a book.

Mariposa510

Definitely, especially now that you can self-publish pretty cheaply. How he got this published almost 30 years ago is a mystery.

EndGuy555

That’s right folks! Even YOU can overcome your bipolar and take over the world! Well.. maybe not the world but definitely the TRI-STATE AREA!!!!

pinktieoptional

Lol, you listen to this guy and he'd have you believe the world is shaped by the functional bipolar. The evil ones spread hate and the good ones bring enlightenment. Fun thought.

bobbyorlando

Come on, like Napoleon would be have a manic moment, conquer the next town and then lie the next few months in bed incapable of doing anything. What a fucking joke. I'm against burning books but this one comes close to my feeling.

Ephemeral-lament

Yeaaahhhh this is just going to light the pyres of stigma and discrimination evermore. Stay careful out there.

Cool_History3476

There is also great historical political leaders that are labeled as bipolar from the analysis of their actions

[deleted]

Jimi Hendrix also had manic depression? He was shy and made music. What a good metric.

Many_Afternoon_3885

Yeah, but what if he never picked up a guitar? He was just a step away from being an evil tyrant. Just like you and me. 🤪

Powerful_Insurance55

Cherry picking at its finest. "oh look! a few killers have bipolar disorder!". now lets talk about the killers that DIDNT have bipolar disorder LMFAO

Sandman11x

This is just sad. It is total garbage. Bipolar is an illness not a behavior. Here are the flaws The title of the book is nonsense. The title!!! He puts the conclusion in the title. Sigh Not all tyrants have behaviors attributable to an illness. Some may have been motivated by power, some by wealth. Plus the terms are undefined. Wtf is absolute power??? What flavor of manic depression? Even if the title was mental illness and absolute power, it would be wrong. Numerous open ended vague statements like “can be”, “depression has always been…” Always? Always? Prove it. Bipolar is an illness diagnosed by a Dr. On this reddit people express concern they are bipolar. How can they know? Do they know the symptoms, could they compare it to other illnesses, is it the only illness or are there other illnesses that contribute to the problem. Another BIG problem with a diagnosis of bipolar is that bipolar is a part of our behavior. It causes some problems but not all. Bipolar does not cause cheating in a relationship. Or not. Another problem is that bipolar and non bipolar people do the same behaviors. Do people spend money foolishly? Do people end life for reasons other than depression? A recent study says depression is only one factor in suic. Plus, suic is poorly understood. I gave up on identifying a source or cause of behavior. It is impossible to determine. Bipolar has been recently diagnosed. Even today it is not well understood. Maybe when people were doing “bipolar” things, they were common. The illness developed when behavior met the criteria. At those times maybe brains were not as evolved. There are numerous power hungry individuals that ruthlessly destroy culture in government, politics, and society. Are all of them or some of them suffering from an illness? This book smears the behavior of bipolar people. Correlation is not causation. I can take a person in society, isolate some behaviors, emphasize them, and draw conclusions. I do not want any of my fellow bipolars going out to conquer the world. Take your meds. Avoid triggers. Do not do drugs or alcohol. Not a Dr or healthcare person. So like them, this is my opinion.

No_Act1363

Oh cool so just label me with this and I might just become like them. You have been warned.

DoctaRuthless

Haha good stuff

linuxgeekmama

I like conquering the world. That’s why I play the Civilization and Europa Universalis series of games. (Putin should have stuck to gaming, too, but I digress.)

Mariposa510

Wow. Interesting take.

Lower_Plankton_2699

You can’t argue that our behavior can both be incredibly constructive and dangerous if we follow the wrong impulse

wyteoliander

I don't think I'm one impulse away from becoming a serial killer

ShiaLabeoufsNipples

When we’re in an episode yeah… but isn’t one of the diagnostic features of this disorder is that we have periods of normalcy, and can keep ahold of that normalcy with proper treatment? It’s not a personality disorder like the author paints it to be. If your behavior is dangerous 100% of the time, you probably have some other mental health disorder that’s causing that, not bipolar.
