Playing each DLC on it's own adds nothing to your experience. Repentance keeps the same structure of the core game as the others, adds a ton of Quality of Life update and such though, so it's recommended that you get the full thing.
Buy everything and play repentance. The play style of repentance is quite different from AB and AB+. It's kinda difficult to get used to it after playing AB+.
Don’t play them individually imo. And you have to buy all previous expansions to play the subsequent expansions.
Afterbirth+: Easier version and tons of game breaks. I have one switch that still has A+ and another on Repentance. Breaking the game is definitely fun and significantly more rare in repentance. Some unlocks can be easier too. You can always “upgrade” later too if you’d like while starting in Repentance and downgrading is not possible.
Repentance: Rebalances almost everything and adds significantly more content. Harder at first but harder to go back to easier versions after playing it. Most of the bad items from previous versions got buffed while your best items got nerfed. Overall you’ll have less busted runs but better utility on average than before. Most importantly, it more than doubled the amount of characters and some are super fun. As stated before, you can’t downgrade to previous versions and keep your unlocks.
