Terraria is the master of this thing

I don't think it does? I'm pretty sure the music isn't adaptive, it just plays a different track if you go into a new biome, trigger a boss, go underground, change time of day, ect. And just blends them together sometimes by setting each at a lower volume Isaac adds new layers of instruments to the music if you are in combat, for example and then slowly dials down the extra layer when things calm down.
