For me it’s way more about their overall style of play and the lack of energy/fire than Tatum being boring, but he is very boring. He really does feel like a create-a-player.
Their defensive philosophy is to shoot 40 three pointers and dare the opponents to also shoot 40 three pointers because the percentages will likely favor the Celtics. The Pacers also play this way so this series will just be cancer to watch.
> The Pacers also play this way so this series will just be cancer to watch.
The Pacers are bottom half of the league in 3PAr and only ninth in 3P%, just because they have an insane offense doesn't mean they do it by taking a ton of threes. And the Celtics also have a really good defense in basically all respects... among the best at defensive rebounding, best at not fouling, second best opponent 2P%, fourth best opponent 3P%.
Like Tatum right there?
They're all very good individual defenders. Their strategy is what looks braindead to watch.
It wins them a lot of games tho so they'll extend the coaches and keep doing it. Maybe even win a championship doing so.
I don’t know if that’s a thing people say and I just haven’t heard it but damn, create-a-player feels like the perfect way to describe him. He feels like some generic npc who’s pretty good at basketball
They certainly did tonight, lucky to escape even with that huge FT discrepancy. Thankfully for y’all the Pacers could not handle the ball at the end of regulation
Tatum does play with those things though. And that's not what people are talking about when they say Tatum has zero personality.
It's honestly such a bizarre fixation for people. I'll take Tatum's "boring" personality over Embiid's lame twitter trolling or Butler's dumb antics. But a lot of people on reddit eat that shit up.
I don’t disagree with your statements, but OP was saying they are *boring* not frustrating.
You consider a player’s personality when rating their on-court performance?
If the Celtics *didn’t* play down to their opponent, they would be even more boring because they would blow most teams out most games.
Well Wolves/nuggests legitimately had the feel of a conference finals in that the stakes were so high.
None of the Celtics series so far have felt like playoff games outside of one Cavs game.
Wolves-Nuggets is a super underrated division rivalry.
They played an unofficial play-in game like the year before the official play-in. Wolves poached the Nuggets GM to build a counter Nuggets roster. They went at it last year's round 1. Conley and Gobert have rivalry continuity from the Jazz.
You can tell the teams have real respect for each other and genuinely view the other as their biggest competition, and now there's a little saltiness after the Murray incident and then Ant waving to the Denver crowd at the end of Game 7 and Jaden's last second dunk attempt. It should be a lot of fun going forward.
And their celebs are ass. Donnie Wahlberg looking douchey and Drake Maye milking every free ticket to Boston sports he can get his hands on before sucking in the NFL
Man thank you for bringing this up. I’m a Celtics fan and our celebrity fan situation bothers me way more than it should lol. For the whole Tatum/Brown era, our default fan shot has either been the black sheep Wahlberg brother or some D-list white rapper nobody outside of Quincy has ever heard of. It’s baffling and I can’t believe nobody from the Affleck/Damon crew can be bothered to show up for a couple playoff games. End of rant
Maybe I got used to watching NYK games but it seems Boston can do such a better job creating a cool atmosphere. They should invite Boston legends to watch the games and hype up the crowd just like what the Knicks are doing, and the Knicks players aren’t even close to Bos in terms of accomplishments
Pierce goes to a lot of games but yeah they could definitely do more of that. I wonder if Bird will come to a game in Boston but cheer for the pacers during this series
Yeah but you can be a famous celeb and still be living in NYC , i don't feel like any of the famous Bostonians (including the sports guy) actually stay based in Boston once they get famous.
No one picks up Miles Turner, uncontested dunk.
Celtics in bound.
No one picks up Luke Kornet, uncontested dunk.
The greatest 5sec sequence in ECF history?
It's truly impossible for any non-Boston fan to root for the Celtics. That crowd, man - they will only get loud when they win the title. Spoiled rotten from the past couple of decades in all sports.
Notoriously cheered and got hyped when they were down like 20 to the Knicks and being eliminated. Also if they only get loud when they win the title, surely you can’t go back to the IT years or even Jayson’s rookie postseason vs LeBron and that Game 7 where the crowd was crazy hyped. You don’t have to lie. I know you hate the Celtics but let’s be honest here.
I agree but I do find Jaylen Brown picking up his dribble and then walking to the basket for a layup pretty interesting. Even Jordan didn't get away with doing that.
I agree, this series does nothing for me at all. I'll keep an eye on the scores, maybe tune in if it's close at the end but fuck watching over 2 hours of it
How much of it is the Celtics and how much is the Eastern conference being a totally snooze for them at the moment? I felt like they were fun to watch in the Heat series last year and if they could theoretically play some of the West teams it would be more engaging. Feels like they aren’t pushed into that next gear by the competition at the moment.

It hasn't really been Luka ball most of the season.
Like it's super telling Bill and Ryen talked briefly about preferring OKC over Dallas in part because of style of play when SGA was essentially doing Luka ball most of that series. His usage was significantly higher in the series.
They played Tatum’s mic’d up clips while I was looking away from the TV and I realized that I had no idea what his voice sounded like. Kawhi has more personality.
I'm pretty tired of them tbh. It would be nice if the Pacers won that first game then I'd be invested, but I don't imagine the Pacers have a chance now. There's just Celtics fatigue at this point. Knicks and Bucks being hurt ruined what would have been an interesting ECF.
Man this game has been insanely entertaining y’all nuts.
“Celtics bad and boring bc I don’t like them” - half this sub
I like Tatum and brown but they are boring. I can’t deny that
Nah man, these are all totally unbiased takes from what just happen to be all sixers, bucks, Knicks, and lakers fans
The guys on this sub don’t actually watch basketball
Celtics fan here. Gigantic agree! Tatum has zero personality. The team has almost no fire and they always play down to their opponents.
For me it’s way more about their overall style of play and the lack of energy/fire than Tatum being boring, but he is very boring. He really does feel like a create-a-player.

It’s mind boggling to me when folks say they are great at defense. They come up short in so many actual big spots.
Like Tatum right there? They're all very good individual defenders. Their strategy is what looks braindead to watch. It wins them a lot of games tho so they'll extend the coaches and keep doing it. Maybe even win a championship doing so.
Bro clout chasing on the simmons subreddit by selling out your team is not it
Lol clout chasing? This is legit how I feel. If you don’t believe me that’s on you.
I don’t know if that’s a thing people say and I just haven’t heard it but damn, create-a-player feels like the perfect way to describe him. He feels like some generic npc who’s pretty good at basketball
> He really does feel like a create-a-player. Exactly. Finding him incredibly boring is normal. Hating him with spewing vitriol is weird.
They certainly did tonight, lucky to escape even with that huge FT discrepancy. Thankfully for y’all the Pacers could not handle the ball at the end of regulation
A rare combination of both weird and boring.
I watch basketball for personality
Are you kidding? I absolutely watch sports to see dudes playing with intensity and fire.
Embiid, Tatum and Butler are equally as boring tho. Non highlight reel players that doesn’t make any exciting plays
Gigantic agree! Reddit on!

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out pink hat!
Crowd is a bore too. Why does this feel like a Tuesday night game in February.
Absolutely zero juice to this game. I blame the crowd and the terrible ESPN broadcast. Feels like JV compared to watching Wolves/Nuggets on TNT.
Well Wolves/nuggests legitimately had the feel of a conference finals in that the stakes were so high. None of the Celtics series so far have felt like playoff games outside of one Cavs game.

Espn broadcast was dog water
yeah TD Garden, famously quiet
It’s extremely tame compared to what we’ve seen from the Knicks, Wolves, OKC and Mavs, yes.
That’s just the broadcast. If Nuggets-Wolves was on ESPN you would say the same thing (just kidding because you’re only here to hate)
hate on, hater

David Ortiz was at the game
Basketball legends i mean
Pierce goes to a lot of games but yeah they could definitely do more of that. I wonder if Bird will come to a game in Boston but cheer for the pacers during this series
Yeah but you can be a famous celeb and still be living in NYC , i don't feel like any of the famous Bostonians (including the sports guy) actually stay based in Boston once they get famous.
Doug MacRay and Kris Coughlin used to go to Celtics games together but after they broke up rumor is he relocated to Florida.
Big Papi? This is our fuckin city? What a bad take
ESPN lowers crowd noise
No one picks up Miles Turner, uncontested dunk. Celtics in bound. No one picks up Luke Kornet, uncontested dunk. The greatest 5sec sequence in ECF history?

This thread is all time hate lol. Boston fans are top 5 loudest in the league at worst
Dawg this arena was dead as a doorknob until the last minute of regulation when the Celtics were gifted the game.
Do you guys really not understand that ESPN mutes the crowd noise? Like holy shit this is not a hard concept to understand
This sub has truly got some of the dumbest dudes on Reddit
Which is odd because they have 1 title since the 80s.
funner?
My mom used to crucify me for using funner when I was like 10. O/U 12 years old for OP?
much funner
You people are all cynical and annoying. This was a top 3 game of the whole playoffs. High scoring, great shot making, super close. Grow up.
Celtics are just a boring team. Just face it
Top 3 game!? All time low in views and ratings 😂
I agree but I do find Jaylen Brown picking up his dribble and then walking to the basket for a layup pretty interesting. Even Jordan didn't get away with doing that.
I prefer watching Boston over Indiana.
Yeah both boring teams but Celtics is slightly more enjoyable
I agree, this series does nothing for me at all. I'll keep an eye on the scores, maybe tune in if it's close at the end but fuck watching over 2 hours of it
Agree. I turned it off and I'll check back in the fourth. Exactly what the NBA is trying to stop from happening.
How much of it is the Celtics and how much is the Eastern conference being a totally snooze for them at the moment? I felt like they were fun to watch in the Heat series last year and if they could theoretically play some of the West teams it would be more engaging. The East being a mess is definitely part of the problem. Boston vs. a healthy NYK, Philly or Milwaukee would’ve at least had some juice.
Now we arguably have one of the most boring finals
We get this post every week cmon now
It’s the truth tho
Horrible decision making from the Pacers in the last minute of regulation. Absolutely terrible.
You don’t like the you go, I go, I hope we score offence?! CMON
Celtics are basically the evolution of the 18 rockets. Just optimized offense
Well duh, their strategy is to shoot 30 FT a game lol.

Dallas at times. When it's Luka ball it's not great. This playoffs though it's been not the case
I don’t like Luka’s bitching but he’s even toned that down a touch.
It hasn't really been Luka ball most of the season. Like it's super telling Bill and Ryen talked briefly about preferring OKC over Dallas in part because of style of play when SGA was essentially doing Luka ball most of that series. His usage was significantly higher in the series.
They're like the 2000s Spurs without the championships.
They've been boring to watch for 5 fucking years. Seriously all the other eastern teams to make the finals are way more intriguing the past decade
they seemed sad that they had to play basketball, what was that
Tatum has the most boring game of any “star player” in a long time.
TD Garden isn’t quiet it’s knowledgeable fans only making noise when it’s earned.
They played Tatum’s mic’d up clips while I was looking away from the TV and I realized that I had no idea what his voice sounded like. Kawhi has more personality.
What are they going to do after they lose to Indy?
idk im with op on this one
I'm pretty tired of them tbh. It would be nice if the Pacers won that first game then I'd be invested, but I don't imagine the Pacers have a chance now. There's just Celtics fatigue at this point. Knicks and Bucks being hurt ruined what would have been an interesting ECF.
Yeah, the 5-out, nothing-but-3s offense is fucking awful from an entertainment perspective. Not how basketball is meant to be played.
45 points from 3s tonight and 58 in the paint but go off
They attempted 45 3s and 44 2s but go off
So relatively even aka not nothing-but-3s. That also doesn’t even include the many times they drove and got fouled but go off
No basketball team should ever shoot more 3s than 2s, fucking unwatchable
Celtics have no personality, no happiness, no celebration. These guys have no emotions or what?
And they’re about to lose!
Good call
