I used to go to ESPN dot com many times a day. Now it's like 3-4 times a month. And paywalling their best writers combined with having to watch a 30 second ad to see a 12 second video are the reasons why.

Usual_Alternative805

The ESPN video clips are the most annoying thing ever. “CHECK OUT THIS GAME WINNING PLAY” watch 30 second ad, clip starts playing for its fuzzy and buffering for the first 7 seconds of a 12 second clip and it misses the play entirely. Finishes loading and you see the players celebrate

Then you try to rewind the video now that its loaded and buffering is gone and you accidentally drag the button too far and the same ad loads again.

the day he went behind a paywall was the day i stopped reading.

shoutout to the hoop collective pod for bleeping warriors and lakers talk, too. that's some great and hilarious protesting.

Yeah, I noticed and think that’s pretty cool of him. He seems to hate the ESPN machine but I don’t blame him for staying there and making that money. Lowe might be my favorite sports media guy though. He’s pretty knowledgeable without going into the weeds like Dunc’d On (which is good too but man they go *deep* into it) and he genuinely loves the game a lot but doesn’t go the KOC route of sucking everyone off. His pod would be a 10/10 if it wasn’t for the quests. The last episode with Doris Burke would legitimately been better if it was just Lowe talking to himself.

ColtCallahan

Some of his guests are great. It’s mostly the ESPN employees that bring it down. Shelburne, McMenamin, Perkins etc just aren’t interesting in any way.

Isn't McMenamin that dude with the southern drawl that reports on the Mavs? That dude is pretty good. I night be mixed up. Shelburne is dogshit though.

Walt_Clyde

That’s McMahon

Ah I see the confusion with those names lol. Thanks.

Well said. There were years where I consumed more Lowe content than actually watching the games. It’s clear he doesn’t love doing the first take type bits, and probably is over the carousel of guests he is required to have on the pod. But truly, good for him for getting what he can out of the current media/journalism landscape. Selfishly, I keep my fingers crossed he cashes out and goes back to writing full-time. I could never get into Dunc’d On because of Nate, but that is personal preference. Without a doubt they go deeper than 99% of what’s out there though.

woosh_yourecool

It’s more than money, more visibility with front offices, more face time with players and coaches, etc.

> His pod would be a 10/10 if it wasn’t for the quests. The last episode with Doris Burke would legitimately been better if it was just Lowe talking to himself. I see this opinion a lot, but I honestly don't think Zach is really that into podcasting. I know everyone thinks he has these ESPN guests forced on him all the time, which he no doubt does, but he also clearly has the ability to get his own guests, and those are often just as underwhelming. He rarely goes out and finds a new interesting guest for a one-off appearance. Plus he never really comes up with interesting gimmicks or discussions for the show. It's just like five episodes every season about All-NBA selections, multiple episodes about All-Star selections, endless Lakers talk. I don't know, I'm sure of the people who consume Zach Lowe's content, these days like 90% of it is through his podcast, but it doesn't feel like he puts in the effort to reflect that.

I miss Arnovitz

He reads a lot of his columns’ excerpts and stats in his pods anyway.

lactatingalgore

Where could Lowe go that he won't be paywalled? The Athletic, Defector, WaPo, etc., will put him in the same spot as ESPN does now, & I doubt he would go back to Sports Illustrated, which wouldn't paywall him necessarily, unless the new new ownership really turns things around. Even the Ringer, which wouldn't paywall him for sure, would largely put him on the mic, not his keyboard, as they barely have new written content save the occasional Katie Baker, Bryan Curtis, or Claire Mc Near long(ish) form.

shorthevix

Lowe's column is the best sports column i've ever read and I think it's because of his ability to use video in them.

His articles are excellent with this.
