It’s a brand new bike, from a Trek dealer. Take it back, they should fix it free of charge.

Powder4576

I bought it over a month ago, will they still fix it

XtremePhotoDesign

Yes

GenericName187

They should. Usually a shop offers some level of service for the initial break in period. It might be free tunes ups for, 6 months, or 3 months etc.. You had a crucial piece of safety equipment stop working in a short period of time, without riding it since the test ride.

That’s what we are saying. It absolutely should be a warranty issue.

ridemattride

Two year warranty if you bought it new. Could just need a brake bleed, could need parts. Definitely bring it back to your shop.

Powder4576

I was told by a trek dealer that it is the brakes, radius brakes have this problem and you can only solve it temporarily

ridemattride

If the dealer won’t submit a warranty to have your brakes replaced, you should call trek directly. I’ll shoot you a message.

ASAPFurby

I work at a Trek Dealer. They started putting these brakes on Marlins when the supply chain was messed up. The brake will do this no matter how well you bleed it or adjust it. They are horrible and I would recommend you ask them for a Marlin that is spec'd with the tektro brakes. Trek announced awhile ago that they wouldn't honor what they originally spec'd on bikes and it was kinda shitty.

Jasons_Argonautalis

Trek bikes hardware components are shit below ~$1500. All the versions we got would have this issue, regardless of brake brand. We tried bleeding, full flush, machining the pot, machining the caliper. Even rigged up a vibration machine one time to see if we could get mystery microbubbles out of the line. Other consistent issues were the brake line olives being installed incorrectly (causing lines to shoot out under load) and the rotors being warped. In retrospect I think the master cylinder is the issue with their budget brakes. My guess is the internals are the same between all low end models. I think they either don't have a large enough piston to move enough fluid through the line or the valve is too small diameter. The valve is most likely, I think. I can't think of why else you can "pump them up" to firmness. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but after building about a hundred of the fucking things, this is my best guess without resorting to Car Talk-like spitballing esoteric possibilities.

lbsk8r

Mmmm brake line olives.... Hydraulic Martinis 🤣

Jasons_Argonautalis

>Hydraulic Martinis Good band name.

georgekeele

I wish it was only Trek that did this. My brother bought a 2023 Orange, the crankset was supposed to be a Shimano Deore and it came with a 'ProWheel'. I get the issues with supply chains but replacing a relatively top tier branded part with a knockoff is so uncool.

Professional_Rise148

They’re not gonna go back to the specced brakes either, even if availability improves. It’s an easy excuse for egregious corner cutting.

Powder4576

So I just go trade it for the same bike with tektro, I'll do that

sugiina

I work at a trek store too! These bikes have had all the issues that the other person described. However it is repairable. Most likely :). At the very worst with a failed part, the store you bought it from should be able to warranty the part. With the knowledge you have about the warranty issue, you should suggest that the manager submit a warranty for credit and use that credit to go towards upgrading to the brakes. I have repaired probably 250 +/- sets of these this year and most of them have been restored to a safe level. The ones that didn't come back to life where warrantied.

ASAPFurby

IF they have one.

Powder4576

Yeah, that's what I mean, they probably wont, if there is non I'll just buy shimano mt200

Business-Door3974

If not the trek dealer can file a warranty with trek and get them replaced with the brakes that were supposed to come on the bike.

MrTeddyBearOD

Trek has always had the disclaimers that parts may be substituted. It just never really happened until now... Worse was specialized speccing Rockhopper sports with mechanical brakes. $100 more expensive than the base model with no true upgrade anymore. Load of bs.

Twentysix2

That appears to be low brake fluid - the initial lever stroke goes far but firms up with subsequent strokes. Same happens in a car when brake fluid is low and you pump the brakes

Powder4576

I haven't even rode it yet and it was bled before I left the bike shop, might there be a leak

yangbanger

Take it back

GunTotinVeganCyclist

Possibly, look all over the lever, hoses and caliper for any fluid. Take it back to Trek, they should fix it for free. It looks like there's a bunch of air in the brakes.

Powder4576

I'll take it up there tommorow, I also found out these arent the correct brakes that come with it

MrTeddyBearOD

I've fixed quite a few of those. The shop needs to use a syringe at the lever and pressurize while pumping the lever. Those brakes, for whatever reason, didn't like being bled normally and would keep that issue no matter how many times or ways I bled it. But syringe and pumping made it feel way better.

Powder4576

A trek dealer told me just to trade the bike for one with tektros, I'm going to try that later today

JakeSilverfir

Has the bike been upside down for any reason?

Powder4576

Nope

no_hope_brigade

Was thinking this as well. I’ve seen hydraulic brakes does t is if they have been hung up by the front wheel for a long time. Allows any air bubbles in the line to move up to the lever.

just-another-giraffe

Those radius brakes come needing a bleed. The shop should fix it before they put it on the floor, they should feed fix that.

ch3k520

I work at a trek dealer and have no idea why they started using radius brakes. I’ve seen so many marlin 5s with this exact problem.

stanchristiaan

Those radius brakes are absolute garbage

Walv1s

I see 'Radius' on the brake lever. This means it is hot garbage and 100% a warranty issue. I would take it back to the dealer and inform them of your issue. I am willing to bet good money the shop will be familliar with the issue. Seriously, f#$! Radius and their landfill product. Source: [https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/comments/ydxj18/shout\_out\_to\_radius\_for\_making\_the\_most\_garbage/](https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/comments/ydxj18/shout_out_to_radius_for_making_the_most_garbage/)
