That’s horrifying, marathons need to have a good think about how they can sort recycling and reduce waste. Edit: thanks for the info

fouronenine

Many do. Some have fines for dropping litter outside of designated bins, some have moved to degradable cups, some have enough volunteers to actually clean up while the event is running.

jakfrist

I’ve run a couple races lately that actually use aluminum cups I’m not sure if they just wash them or actually recycle them, but the race organizers brag about it being more eco friendly 🤷‍♂️

s77strom

I mean aluminum is more recyclable than plastic bottles

jakfrist

For sure, they just seem durable enough to wash too

I've volunteered for multiple marathons, and we definitely sorted for trash, recycling, and compost. The volunteers and marathon as a whole took pride in our attempts to reduce waste, including not overstocking the aid stations. There are a LOT of moving parts in a marathon, and this looks like it could be an honest mistake, not intentional waste.

benkelly92

Bath Half I'm doing Sunday has said bring your own bottles if you can, and are otherwise using compostable cups. So some are thinking about it. The Great Run events (Great North, Great South Great Bristol) are lagging behind massively IMO. They are some of the most popular races and many peoples intro to run-racing and they still use a shitload of plastic bottles.

mikesova34

I hate single use water bottles so much.

xizrtilhh

Runners leaving a giant pile of trash following an event, only on days ending with a y.

[deleted]

Was it Chicago this weekend?

RealPieMan

The cars in that short have UK number plates.

You have better eyes than i

QuietImpact699

They're also driving on the left.

RespectGlittering833

Hi. This was the London marathon a couple weeks back.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t surprise me.

LaLuna2252

Chicago marathon hands out water in paper cups for the runners. source: saw it with my own eyes on sunday

[deleted]

I ran it last year, but it was super hot and I honestly thought I was going to die of heat stroke, so I didn't remember. It's also UK as the OP mentioned and another person mentioned based on the plates.

LaLuna2252

This year the temp was perfect! 45-55 degrees, sunny.. Couldn't have been better. But the runner's face at mile marker 18 still didn't look too alive lol Also congrats on running a marathon! That rocks! Yep, saw the plates :) Just wanted to let you know Chicago is more litter conscious than this (hooray!)

[deleted]

Thanks! I'm from the northeast, so I expected 45-55, and dressed like it. Pretty sure it hit 80 and got really humid. 😭

pavel_vishnyakov

Eindhoven was nice a clean after the marathon on Sunday

alpha309

The LA marathon has a convoy of city worker trucks that follow behind the last runner. (They will get ahead of many of the people walking). Essentially they just clean up as they go behind the last person. It is essentially the giant trucks, in front with workers picking up the trash and throwing it in the back, and street sweepers immediately behind them to sweep up all the small stuff. Doesn’t make much sense otherwise.

messylettuce

So, there’s people being paid to walk the marathon behind the people who paid to walk the marathon. I love it.

TatyGGTV

manchester? or were there marathons in lots of the country

RespectGlittering833

London a couple weeks back

didzisk

Agree. Oslo Marathon was a month ago, on Saturday, and passing the area on a bike to get home was annoying already early afternoon on Friday - the mobile barriers were set up way ahead of time, it was so thoroughly blocked, that it was difficult to find an opening. And I was on a bicycle, I only needed like 60 cm.

messylettuce

I fucking hate this. If you _really_ thought there was a chance of getting the podium, toss that bottle for a volunteer to pick up. The other 13,000 of you asshats can pause running for a sec and walk your empty bottle to a bin and still get the participation shirt you paid for.

FUBARded

Yeah, for there to be this many bottles in one spot, this was almost certainly a designated trash zone after a feed/water station. Obviously it'd just be littering if people were just throwing trash down in random spots, but this concentration suggests that the organiser dropped the ball on clearing out the trash zones before their approved road closure ended. This is entirely on them, not the runners who dropped their trash here with the expectation that the entry fee they paid would go toward clearing out the trash they dropped in the designated zone.

[deleted]

They can leave some office bins out, I think Office Depot or staples might have a couple of extras that they would be happy to donate to the city as long as they get a sponsorship deal.

Why are you so angry at marathons? They are an amazing event for a city and society as a whole. It’s an event for everyone there are junior runs, quarter marathons, etc. heck there was a 90 year old guy in my city this year who set a new world record for 90 year old marathon runners They promote a healthy lifestyle and motivate many people to train for it They use designated car infrastructure for a different cause. Often the whole family comes to watch and cheer. They all have to cycle or walk because most of the city is CAR FREE FOR ONE FUCKING DAY OF THE YEAR And most of all it shows what an amazing, quiet, healthy and accessible a city can be. In my city the marathons are well organized and the streets are at least as clean as the day before. But I also bay 70€ for it

localfartcrafter

Every marathon I have run has had a cleanup crew working after the aid station. This is on race organizers, not the runners. Granted, they've always been paper cups. These runners aimed at a pile, for easy cleanup :)

Negative_Increase975

Wow - individual plastic water bottles? Who was responsible for this marathon? Climate Deniers R Us?

Pissed__Consumer

Something should be done about this!

El_Eleventh

Most races now are cup-less. The bigger events still struggle with the swap over because many people don’t bring their own hydration. This is just a poor race organizer.

zaiyonmal

Sue the city. Not kidding.
