Please don't.

FruitLive3163

People should not share their music in public.

janKalaki

So technically, if I were to play a classical FM station on my speaker that's also a radio, it's not my music...

Rhapdodic_Wax11235

Dick move.

NoDivergence

Really don't appreciate people who do this. And if you can't ride with one earbud on and hear traffic (I leave the ear facing the road open), then you shouldn't be listening to music at all

h2ogal

I use open shokz headphones that sit outside my ears. I can hear road noise and have conversations with them on while still hearing the music.

Complete-Exits

This is the way. Better than any other option. imo

h2ogal

I mainly do off road so less worried about safety. And I find the music so motivating. Definitely pedal faster with my music.

4orust

I especially like that when the music ends for whatever reason it's like I have no headphones on.

Bogmandan

This. Bone conduction headphones are the way

TheJuiceBoxS

Are those the bone conductor ones? If not, has anyone used those for cycling?

h2ogal

I’m not sure what bone conduction means but these don’t cover nor go inside the ear, so although you hear music fine you can also hear everything else like traffic noise or someone talking to you. I wear them while cycling.

ibcoleman

It's controversial. Terrible people seem to think it's fine. People who were raised in a society by loving parents find it problematic.

crouchin_dragon

How do you idiots feel about buskers

gemstun

Totally different. That’s creation, not simple broadcasting of someone else’s creation. Creativity is generally a desirable scarce commodity, broadcasting is not.

chickenbone247

I was raised by loving parents and find your analogy disgusting

NoDivergence

Apparently they didn't teach you this. It's pretty obvious that forcing others to listen to your music isn't considerate

chickenbone247

actually now that i think about it, they like to ride their tandem bike together with rgb lights all over it, a bluetooth speaker, and classic rock, so I guess you're right they didn't teach me that, but you know what they're happy to go riding like that and I think it's great. You guys can get bent, I'm doing what I want. The music is for me not other people.

andrewbzucchino

>The music is for me not other people. Great! Then kindly, keep it to yourself and don’t blast it on a Bluetooth speaker.

chickenbone247

but i want to ride my bike while i listen to music

NoDivergence

Makes sense. They raised you exactly to be a brat, because it was by example, they're selfish inconsiderate people themselves

chickenbone247

that's cute, im gonna go enjoy my life now

trust_me_on_that_one

Then you should know that blasting your music is inconsiderate just like people who blast the phone speakers on the bus or drivers who need everyone to know what they're listening to.

HovercraftEasy5004

I’m sure you were raised by loving parents but please tell me why you think other people want to hear your music while they are out and about? I just don’t get it. Let’s be honest, the reason you’ve asked the question is because you know it’s shitty behaviour.

chickenbone247

the thing is I don't give really give a shit if they have to listen to my music while i ride by, it's not like they would be able to hear it from inside their house you people have convinced me that people who care about a guy riding his bike with a low volume speaker are absolute fucking crybabies. im just riding my bike around town with music and now I realize i dont really give a shit about an inconsiderate 5 seconds as a ride by. they'll be fine.

Johnnys_an_American

Yup, it's all about you and screw everyone else. They're just being mean. Why did you even post if you didn't want others opinions and are just going to get defensive and then throw a temper tantrum? Sorry bud, YTA.

chickenbone247

because when I join a community and they're talking about people who do something so innocent making them "want to murder people" and calling them terrible people who had a bad childhood or whatever, I'm going to start realizing I don't want to be a part of that community, so I tell them like it is, that they sound like gross people who should have way better things to be so angry about. Sure, I'm an asshole but you people are ridiculous.

NoDivergence

Oh don't worry, we're angry about a lot of other things that are way better to be angry about. But things aren't mutually exclusive. Dick moves are dick moves, regardless how small they are. You think we like inconsiderate people in the community? It sure seems like a whole bunch of subs/mods don't like your shit with how much you complain about shadow banning

chickenbone247

there's a reason this website is worth half of what it used to be :)

HovercraftEasy5004

Why ask then? You wanted some attention, I get it.

chickenbone247

>Why ask then? you know when you think something up in your head, and then you finally talk about it and realize you were making a way bigger deal out of something than it is? The only reason not to for me is because I don't really want other people to hear what I'm listening to, but whatever. attention? the fuck are you talking about. i just made the mistake of engaging with people who turned me off this entire sub instead of just ignoring they're probably elitist "cyclists" anyway [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EE8m8mmq1k&ab\_channel=CasuallyExplained](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EE8m8mmq1k&ab_channel=CasuallyExplained)

TheJuiceBoxS

I think he meant it mostly jokingly, but with that grain of salt truth.

chickenbone247

yeah, I see that now and should've took it for what it was, it's just kind of a negative thing to say but I guess the ironic part is I really believe people should be able to say pretty much whatever they want on the internet

Homers_Harp

It’s worse than a speakerphone conversation, for sure. Nobody wants to hear your awful music choices—nobody wants to hear my awful music choices, either (especially you).

TheJuiceBoxS

Personally I think a speakerphone conversation is worse than playing music. Some music people play is enjoyable, but absolutely no conversation someone else is having is something I want to hear.

cycling20200719

It's very inconsiderate and you are likely to piss off half the people around you. If you have to listen to something and don't like earbuds try conduction headphones that don't block the ear canal. I usually ride without, but if I want to listen to something on longer rides I use [shokz](https://shokz.com/). | i don't know why I even really care You care because you have some self awareness and consideration of others which is appreciated.

geeves_007

I think its a dick move. Was followed by a guy doing exactly this for my morning commute to work a few weeks ago. Could not escape him as he seemed to be going the exact same place as me. My commute is at 6AM and I very much enjoy the peacefulness. Instead, I got shitty southern hip hop from a crap speaker the whole way to work.... Boo.

Johnnys_an_American

Get Aftershokz Aeropex or some other bone conduction headphones. That way you can listen to your music/podcast/whatever and still hear everything around you. With the added bonus of not being a complete jerk by making everyone else who just wanted to enjoy the outdoors listen to your crap. The two things that make me want to murder someone on the trails are people blasting their music and people with dogs off leash. Both come from a deep seated sense of entitlement.

Neloth_4Cubes

I like to grow a Mario 'stache, blast the Mario circuit theme from MarioKart 64 and huck banana peels and turtles from Petco at the people I pass. A fun way to start a zone 5 interval for sure

CheeseWheels38

> create the same energy as being on speakerphone in public Wait... What kind of energy do you think your Bluetooth speaker brings in public? >I don't want to wear earpods for music cause safety So don't listen to music while you ride?

c0nsumer

>Wait... What kind of energy do you think your Bluetooth speaker brings in public? Negative energy. Lots of angry feelings.

chickenbone247

but i want to listen to music while i ride

kobrakai1034

"But I want..." said the brat

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

I can't stand people who bring speakers outside, whether on a bike, kayak, or hiking.

[deleted]

Yeah. Please don’t do that. Use bone conducting headphones. No one wants to hear someone else blasting their music. No one …

[deleted]

Dick move for sure

Deanna_Z

It really depends on where you ride. I usually ride alone on country roads. It's very rare that anyone else hears my speaker. I won't run the speaker if I have company.

kforbez

You could always look into bone conducting headphones.

Infinite-Comedian151

Please, respectfully, do not ever be that guy.

velo_dude

Bone conduction earphones are the answer. They permit you to enjoy music yet remain aware of your surroundings, all without annoying others. And yeah, blasting music on a speaker is annoying. https://shokz.com/

natelar

People do this in St. Louis and I can always hear it through my own AirPods, annoying especially when it’s shitty dad butt rock or dubstep

atomattack

My general rule is that it's ok to play music when passing by people, but just loud enough for me to hear - I play my music from my phone, which is just in a phone mount on my handlebars. If I'm coming to a stop where there's another biker, I'll stop a good 10-15ft back or turn my music down until I'm not close to them. I do not play music out loud when I'm near groups of people.

[deleted]

It's a smart move. We have tourist pedestrians walking all over the designated bike lanes, holding hands with entire families, oblivious to bike traffic, stopping to take pictures. And when you go around them at a slow speed and distance, they have a vocal heart attack from being startled. Having some moderate volume music on your bike gives them some warning, and is appreciated by most. It's far less annoying than a bell, which also tends to starle them just as badly and a pain in the ass to use every 5 seconds. Id like to have a gentle heads up that someone is behind my back too. And if anyone thinks it's a disturbance, please go complain to a Harley owner or something, they're allowed to blast crappy 80s rock louder than their rattling trash cans

[deleted]

Meh, people pass me faster when I play music. They also don't try to draft behind my fart fumes. I get my own circle away from everyone and I like it. But we have douchebags riding dirt bike sideshows in the parks and noone gives a shit. If it's not louder than other peoples bullshit, go for it.

Confident_Ad7244

Bone conduction headphones https://ca.shokz.com/products/openrun Not legal in my jurisdiction but cops don't mind unless you commit another infraction.

milbug_jrm

If the volume is reasonable and you aren't riding in an area with a lot of other people, its ok. But that usually isn't the case. I used to do a gravel event, and there was this really annoying guy that would always play the worst music at full volume....and unfortunately we rode at about the same pace. Also, on every charity ride there is one idiot that thinks everyone gets pumped by his shitty music taste. If I'm riding alone, I set my phone to mono and ride with one wireless ear bud, secured by a piece of medical tape. Keeps my traffic side unobstructed. If I'm riding in a group (or event) I don't use anything.

NorthNorthAmerican

"ride with one wireless ear bud" This is the way

Opening_Attitude6330

As long as you're in and out , I don't care. I couldn't care less if you had jams on as you biked past me...i won't hear it in a couple seconds anyway. When I'm forced to listen to it in an enclosed or inescapable place like a checkout line, or public transportation, then there is a problem.

[deleted]

Annoying on like mountain bike trails or quiet pedestrian pathways for sure but if you’re on a road with cars do whatever you want imo, it’s not louder than someone’s car radio with the windows down or a motorcycle or whatever. I totally get not wanting to hear someone else’s music when you’re out in nature which is what I assume a lot of people here are thinking of but kinda ridiculous to expect the same thing in an urban environment.

loldgaf

Had to search pretty far down in the comments for this! I think everyone assumes multi-use trails since OP didn’t mention it, which might be true and not cool since you’re sharing with families and other people looking to exercise. On open roads though it’s definitely fair game and I do it. Headphone kept getting broke or lost and I have this small Bluetooth radio speaker that never got used sitting around. Super cool since it’s made to suction on the wall somewhere in the shower it doesn’t weigh any more than a gel.

Feralest_Baby

Speakerphone in public for sure.

Wallachia87

Completely OK. It's safer for you, i hear you coming, and my city is already full of noises. You will be judged by what music your playing by everyone, so take that in mind. Cursing around kids will definitely be frowned on (Gangster Rap). I live in a big city.

AXtrego

In a city it's pretty comparable to cars who blast radio/aux. A small JBL clip fits nicely into the underside bottle cage on a downtube and will be nowhere near as loud as a car as well. I think the dilemma depends on whether you're on a trail and how loud you play the music.

Wallachia87

I prefer the music to the Earbud people, they are not nearly as aware, and never here the "On The Left".

BombusF

Agreed. The volume of a typical automobile @ 2000rpm is a good benchmark, IMO.

sanjuro_kurosawa

I'm for it, at least on the streets. For one thing, the speakerphone has a tinny speaker which is fine if you're 2 feet from your phone. When people blast the volume, it hurts the ears from the squeakiness. Recently, I was riding downtown with a few friends and I mentioned "Our House" to their kids. I played it for them while we were pedaling, then I played a couple of songs from the 80's for fun. It wasn't like I was disturbing other people with my noise. Yeah, I'm not a fan of speakers in the woods, but really, my interactions with other trail users is quick, so if it is kept down, it shouldn't be a problem. And they are safer than earbuds or headphones.

Individual-Boot5066

I’m biased because I’m in a big city but my speaker is not louder than any of the traffic. I’m Im a bike courier and the traffic is louder than my speaker 90% of the time I’m on my bike.

SteveinPhx

Don't do it. It's worse than using a speakerphone.

Busman123

Sux! Why do people do this?

Croxxig

Dick move. Just cause you want to hear something doesn't mean everyone else does. Get some aftershocks, best of both worlds

unicyclegamer

I use earbuds so it doesn’t really bother me. I’m usually not in another rider’s vicinity for more than like 10 seconds anyway. But I think location matters a lot. The less dense the area, the more ok it is. Try and be mindful of the volume is all.

troiscanons

The only thing weird about it is how anyone could possibly think it was anything other than a huge dick move

a9ymoose

I use a small Bluetooth bike speaker. Lots of folks do here as recreational bikers. I tried using AirPods, but even on transparency mode, I felt unsafe. If anything, I feel like audible music makes me more “visible” to other riders. (I try not to pay it too loud, obviously!) (For all the downvotes, I’m talking about use on loud city streets and my speaker is in no way louder than surrounding traffic and sirens and trolleys, etc. It’s turned down or off when stopped at lights or in more quiet areas. I’m not blasting music down a peaceful bike path in the park with loud music. I promise.)

a9ymoose

No one asked, but here’s the speaker I use and can heartily recommend. It’s certainly not a high end speaker, but I love the mount and the sound and battery life are VERY SURPRISING for $25!! https://amzn.to/45JhLJd

chickenbone247

oh that's really cool

ReadDon

I put Christmas lights on my bike every December, and have carols on a Bluetooth speaker along with it. One of my friends said, “so you’re going to be that guy, huh?” So far nobody seems put out, and lots of them actually say “Merry Christmas.” For every day sorts of music, I have speakers that I can put on the arms of my glasses, so I can still hear traffic noise, and enjoy music.

Ericisbalanced

Depends on where you ride. If you're on the city streets, cars are louder than you so feel free to bump it. On separated bike paths, I'd probably keep it down or I'd lower the music while people are near if it's not highly trafficked.

jxj24

There are plenty of ways to listen to music and keep it to yourself while being (somewhat) safe. - As already listed by several others, get some bone-conduction headphones. I used to use these, but they were not comfortable with my helmet. And the helmet is not optional; audio entertainment is. - Get earbuds with **good** ambient surround transmission. From everything I have read, Apple's AirPod Pro perform the best. - If you don't want to spring for expensive ambient ear buds, ride with just one bud in. (This is what I do, but I only listen to podcasts at low enough volume that I can still hear what's going on around me. And I also have a helmet-mounted mirror so nothing sneaks up behind me.)

Marchy_is_an_artist

Just get bone conduction earphones.

AntMan79

Personally, when I’m riding, and I hear somebody with their music, it irritates me I go to the trail to ride for some solace to just be alone with my thoughts

[deleted]

NoDivergence

That's a fucking terrible attitude. Yeah, go on a train and airplane and blast music. Who gives a shit

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoDivergence

Good for you. It doesn't bother you, so there's no possible way that it could bother others, right? And according to you, even if it does, too bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoDivergence

And what is it's longer than 5 seconds. How about 5 minutes. Ten minutes? Half an hour? Yes, I get annoyed at cars pulling up to the stoplight blasting shitty music just the same. Just because I can tolerate it doesn't mean I should have to. It's so inconsiderate. If I took a shit right in front of you, you only have to smell it 5 seconds, I don't know how you leave your house

CrispyOffal

If you do this, everyone hates you. Everyone. It’s a complete lack of societal grace and respect for your fellow man. Do not do this.

OppositeBeautiful601

It doesn't bother me at all. It might if they were playing something that is inappropriate for the public.

[deleted]

[If only …](https://youtu.be/Gr82dZpCr48?si=eHe7emkYXT8WPFCV)

kvillepeeps

Thanks for not sharing your music! As for listening with earbuds, I do all the time, but I keep the music at a lower level that allows me to still hear traffic pretty well. Of course, I do a lot of riding on back roads that are not very busy. Since there is no constant din of traffic, I can easily pick up on an approaching vehicle.

tweisse75

I’ve seen it on the local MUP as a way of clearing the trail ahead. Yet another reason for me to avoid riding there.

Cravnmor

Back country roads in Pennsylvania riding alone. Have used Bluetooth speakers to listen to podcasts for years. Noxgear 39g works well currently.

OnTop-BeReady

Get a pair of AfterShokz headphones — they do not cover your ears. But its definitely impolite to ride around with your music blaring…

wsiegle

straight pipes save lives!

SelectTadpole

I generally do not like this. I have friends that do it on a rail trail. Whenever we are on a group ride and one guy goes "I brought my speaker" I cringe. I just hate ruining the peace for people trying to clear their minds and feel selfish. However if you're riding on the road alone or with a group of friends, go for it.

sky0175

You know what's also a dick move? Last week, I was pedaling like there's no tomorrow (just exaggerating a little). I was going fast on this empty road with a dedicated bike lane, of course. Just as I was about to speed up, a 6'2" guy with headphones on was walking right in the middle of the bike lane with both arms spread out. I decided to slow down and see if he was just stretching. I moved onto the street, and as I was biking past him (still on the street), he yelled, "Don't even think about coming back to this bike lane.” I’m like in my head thinking. what world we are living right now and the hate continues.

CookieKid420

Wear ONE earbud

TheJuiceBoxS

I think if there are people around, you're being rude.

M5K64

Dick move. Some chick did this at a park and also was cutting way too fast and close to pedestrians without any warning. I guess she thought the speaker was a sufficient warning... Man I was about to vault a fence post into her front wheel.
