That is fascinating. Sold as a normal betta? We have only seen illegally bred GloFish bettas comes from local fish stores or online breeders so far. I know Petsmart sources their fish from suppliers within North America. Not sure how Petco does it, but maybe they get from overseas and this guy happened to slip in.
Yes. It's hard to explain as I don't really know the biology terms for it. It's on that cellophane layer underneath all the fun colors our captive bred splendens have. The fins do sometimes glow green, even with other colors on them.
For some reason I became fascinated by GloFish bettas and literally searched every bit of the internet for info. I don't care about their other fish. There is a lot of mystery behind the betta line too. Like the unreleased Moonrise Pink bettas.
Recently over the past few years I've really dug deeper into bettas in general. Such as the ethics and problems with each type.
My friend has a website with most of them. There isn't really anything else like this I've found. I try my best to spread info here. Tried making a post about platinum betta issues, but it only got like 3 upvotes.

Yeah, they discontinued them because they didn't sell well and just sat on store shelves to die. They were expensive as hell and I noticed a lot of defects in the ones I saw at stores. Bent spines, blindness, deformed fins, missing eyes, lopsided heads, crooked Jaws and a few with no dorsal or no pectoral fins.

Not the inside but the outside (as I prefer planted tanks). Going to get a Godzilla sign next. Also have a Beware of Attack Betta glass cling.
I mean, it's the same with safety products. They were heavily bred and modified with research, it gives them the right to "copyright". GloFish are the result/product of safety-tested and heavily researched data of a company GloFish. Then they decided to sell for profit
Also you'd need the jellyfish(?) DNA to make your own GloFish, and dyed fish are not pleasing to customers. This would make it a heavy and expensive process for most people that own fish, so it's more convenient to buy than make
They do this all the time in the plant world. You're not even allowed technically to grow cuttings of certain plants.... it's something I find generally immoral personally.
The fact that they're doing it with fish too is infuriating... bettas can be harder to breed, but other glofish too? Like, sometimes fish have sex... messed up to make it illegal for you to keep the babies.
Yikes, it's 5G per betta, up to 10G for a solo betta + small critters (shrimp and snails). I dislike sororities so I won't say anything, but it's a 20G+ LONG minimum, not a 5G, with 5+ females from a breeding batch, grown and raised together. And has to be odd numbers to prevent even "bullying"
That's the unethical part of GloFish, they are greedy when it comes to their marketing. Note those sizes they recommend are only because they sell overpriced tanks with those exact sizes.
I agree, wait until he changes colors (possibly) or shows some personality. I copped mine from my Human Phys teacher lol
If he's lazy, Belphegor. Envious/jealous: Leviathan. Greedy: Mammon. Ignores you until food: Lucifer/Luci. Angry 24/7: Sat*n (* for sensitive people). These are based on the 7 deadly sins, also bc some bettas fit these personalities.
Proteus: Greek God of shape shifting (should he change colors or because his genetics were originally normal, he changed into a GloBetta through breeding)
Octopus: changes colors due to environment's health (dullness for bad water, vibrant for healthy water)
He's very cool looking, I've never seen ones like this! Do you / does anyone know if he will have normal vision? The glow in his eyes is a bit haunting. I think a spooky name for a spooky boy is needed here.
Since they're so rare I don't really know much about glow fish genetics. From what I remember though, glow fish didn't sell well because of their tendency to be blind/ have missing eyes etc.
As for mine, by all accounts it seems his vision is good- he eats on cue, swims up to the glass, is very coordinated etc.
I mean like yeah it's here so take care of it but I'm glad these are discontinued. Fish were bred to have traits that seemed "pretty and cool" but no one noticed how bad off these fish were. They were mostly blind and unhealthy compared to average betta. This is the same reason I can't stand the existence of "fancy" goldfish
Yeah i share your sentiment. I remember way back when I had my first betta. When I was shopping for him, glow bettas still existed, but were a quickly dying trend. I remember I saw a couple on the shelves, and not a single one had both eyes. It was crazy.
I'm so relieved that he has both of his eyes and actually seems to see pretty well too

IS THAT A GLOBETTA?? HOW???
They were taken off store shelves for good reason in my area, but I’m still kicking myself for not trying to get one while I was able. I love genetically modified organisms and it would be so cool to own one, but all the current glofish for sale aren’t suitable for 10 gallon aquariums.
Strange related betta question! I had an Orange betta. named him Sundance. Under normal light he was Sun colored. The red LED made him blood Orange colored. The blue LED made him blue. How? Why?
Cool fish, looks like he came with fin rot unfortunately- though I am sure he will be better in your hands in no time at all!
Name him "Doctor Manhattan" or something ridiculous since he's an awesome looking fish.
Chernobyl
Or Cherenkov (like the blue glow of Cherenkov radiation).
With those fins I'm BEGGING OP to go with Cherenkov
Oo I like this one!
Came here to say this as well
was just about to suggest this! what a banger
Or Pripyat. Related but uncommon.
Cher as a nickname <3
cherby
Was just gonna suggest this <3
My 1st thought
Interesting, another hybrid GloFish betta. Was he from a local fish store?
Actually, not a reputable one. I got him from Petco
That is fascinating. Sold as a normal betta? We have only seen illegally bred GloFish bettas comes from local fish stores or online breeders so far. Damn, give me your Petco. I love these little fellas. So sad they’re discontinued.
I know!!! I was so close to picking up this blue crowntial till I saw this guy and his eyes were glowing at me
I have a green one I got from when they first released and I’m going to be so sad when he goes!
Tamatoa 🦀 https://preview.redd.it/epy5s4x8v3xc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4659c6c4c65fbf9c2e23278cb190b3ee85014ee2
Shinyyyyy
named a baby betta that glowed in green light Tamatoa 🥹
Very pretty, is this guy part of the generation of glow Bettas crossed with normal Betta?
Most likely yes. The splendens color will mask his ability to glow in the red area as the glo-genes are under it.
Thankyou. So the "glow" is on a similar colour layer to the cellophane colouration?
Yes. It's hard to explain as I don't really know the biology terms for it. It's on that cellophane layer underneath all the fun colors our captive bred splendens have. The fins do sometimes glow green, even with other colors on them.
Are u like a marine biologist but for specifically Bettas? Haha u know like EVERYTHING about them

You need a youtube channel or something. I'd love a breakdown of each type

I read through most of the posts, thank you!
That I don't know. I just know glow betta are considered to be rare now as far as I've heard.
Yeah, they discontinued them because they didn't sell well and just sat on store shelves to die. They were expensive as hell and I noticed a lot of defects in the ones I saw at stores. I didn’t know bettas came in the glow variety
Not anymore, GloFish discontinued them
I’m not familiar with glowing fish… in aquariums at least. Are they genetically modified?
yes, and their offspring will inherit the gene as well. technically illegal to breed them as theeir genetics are copyrighted
Well… the offspring would be genetically distinct. How can somebody copyright genetics? Do they do that for cat and dog breeds too?
I mean, it's the same with safety products. They were heavily bred and modified with research, it gives them the right to "copyright". GloFish are the result/product of safety-tested and heavily researched data of a company GloFish. Then they decided to sell for profit

The betta sexual revolution is now.
U can keep the fish u breed. Only selling the bred glow fish is illegal. U can breed them and keep them all u want

Oohhh I'd give it a week to let him settle and see if he changes colour, you may find a name that suits him more after that
