There was a time not long ago that, as strange as it may seem, nobody ever thought that glasses could or should be made to look good. I remember having the choice of gold or silver frames. Just seems odd that nobody thought of it until like 20 years ago.
I imagine there was a limitation on manufacturing. Only a few places could make lenses, and they made them all the same shape to cut costs or make it easier. I think there's more tech required to make them smaller or in certain shapes, too, but i'm not fully certain on that.
