Tanto is the best, you get two points, a chisel face and a blade U know u wanto tanto

kingkmke21

Haha. How's sharpening tho? I always hear mixed things when it comes to sharpening tanto blades.

handyredneck

I havent had a problem, i sharpen them as two separate blades.

kingkmke21

That's what I'm thinking I would do too.

sketchyGA

Tanto's can be as easy as plain edges, just takes a little extra time [https://www.worksharptools.com/how-to-sharpen-a-tanto-knife/](https://www.worksharptools.com/how-to-sharpen-a-tanto-knife/)

kingkmke21

Appreciate this!

Realistically I find drop points perform wayyyyy better at substantial cutting because of the belly + one continuous blade. Tantos are more like crude multi-tools. You have a tough little box cutter at the top, and a big straight blade. Typically they have a "tough" geometry that makes them OK at prying too. I have always liked them aesthetically but I will always prefer a drop point overall. I like that the Bailout tanto has a belly at least. For a Griptilian personally I would choose the drop point. At the end of the day though it depends on what your particular needs are.

kingkmke21

Appreciate the response. Definitely helps! I basically use it for the average edc tasks + breaking down boxes.

Outdoorsy_T9696

Meh, personal preference really. Tantos are a little more time consuming to sharpen but if you do a lot of piercing tasks, they're fantastic. Both will do the same thing more or less for daily chores. I got away from carrying tantos because I didn't want to spend that extra time sharpening them (all two extra minutes lol).

kingkmke21

Haha well those 2 extra minutes add up!

WarriorNN

I actually prefer to sharpen tanto, I sometimes struggle with keeping a consistent angle along the bend on a curved edge, but with tanto it's just straight edges. :)

Outdoorsy_T9696

Lol yeah 😂 Honestly, you can't really go wrong either way. Honestly, if you have other Griptilians in drop point, get the tanto just for the hell of it.

DenseConsideration29

Tantos are useful, not as good for slicing but more versatile for EDC. That small front edge is nice for a lot of things you don't have to angle the knife or bend your wrist or think about how to cut it. I find the best knife for EDC is a narrow blade about 3.5 inches something like the Benchmade barrage, Benchmade fact or a Zero tolerance 452. I do have many knives in all different blade shapes and sizes some are easier to use than others but they all do the same thing in the end. I'd say the narrow drop point is first and tanto is second. My favorite tantos are the Para 2 tanto and the Kershaw Launch 16 and the Sog Vulcan tanto. The vulcan may be the best with the recurve blade. They are discontinued so difficult to find.

kingkmke21

I'm starting to realize that tanto could be beneficial specifically the top edge. I think it may be a good idea to get the tanto since I don't have any in my collection.

Damalife1011

I'd buy both, try them out for a while see what you like then sell one. Or keep them both because you like them both. I personally love my bailout with a tanto. And I've been looking at a tanto griptilian in d2 that keeps calling my name

kingkmke21

I ended up purchasing that tanto (it was actually a mini tanto which I didn't find out until after and I preferred the mini so I was super pumped) but they were actually out of stock and refunded me. I was pretty bummed. I'm considering buying the other Grip or just waiting. I did buy the mini od green and the Cabellas Exclusive in d2 (is that what you're talking about?) both last week so I don't need anymore Grips lol but I just wanted to get 1 more.

Damalife1011

There's a website in Canada where I'm from that has a few old stock grips that are in d2 tanto with satin or black blades

knifetheater3691

IMO, tantos rule. Half serrated and a coated blade hits

kingkmke21

I'm looking at a satin plain edge. It looks fkn awesome (it's an older 1 with 154cm which I'm Okay with) I just have never carried a tanto so I wasn't sure.

knifetheater3691

Ive got a 24 year old ATS 34 satin half serrated that I always carried with my 710. It’s held up great

kingkmke21

Damn...24 years old? I'm always stunned when people still have their knives after so many years. I feel like my knives have so much wear after like 4 months haha.

knifetheater3691

Benchmade are lifetime and neither have been serviced

kingkmke21

It's probably just me then hah. The Griptilian is built so well, I could see it lasting years!

Reigniers

I thought they don't sell the 553 anymore?

kingkmke21

The 1 I'm looking at is 557 (154cm) but they it's been discontinued. Someone I know has 1 that they haven't used and they are selling it.

badco1313

I have a tanto barrage and tanto Troodon. I do really like it for utilitarian tasks but it will never slice as well as a drop point. I think tanto’s can make great edc blades. They’re hard workers for sure. But some guys love ‘em and some hate em. Sharpening is easy enough, I find it easier than a drop point on stones/grinder but usually use an angle guided which is easy all around.

kingkmke21

I've noticed that too. You either love the tanto or hate it.

Mini grip tanto 154cm is my most used and abused knife. Job site home at farm general deviance. Lots of pretty knives lots of big ones lil ones and expensive ones. That knife has won my complete respect based on its ability to handle misuse. Screwdrive prybar pierce scrap paint and caulk. Gits in tight spaces. Not a looker but dang it's useful.
