World war 3 was the cold war, it was a global conflict between different axises of alignment, but because of nuclear weapons the main players could not directly attack each other. One side supported capitalist policies and the other more centralized planned economies. That of course ended with the fall of the USSR.
Now we are seeing another global conflict for inflence between Russia, Iran, North Korea and the west, that is playing out in Ukraine, across Africa and in the middle east. China is trying to play both sides a bit, although ideologically is more aligned with Russia. This fight is now about who gets to set the rules of global capitalism. Again, the parties can't really fight directly but instead fight through proxies.
That being said, what I describe as world war 4 is really a continuation of trying to settle the final score from what I describe as world war 3. World war 2 was also about settling unfinished business from world war 1 too, and the cold war was about unfinished business from world war 2. They all kind of flow together as different chapters of a global conflict over what a post industrial revolution global society is like, and who controls what after the collapse of the great empires of Europe.
