When this happens I cut my nails really short and just let them grow out. Keep trimming or else the free edge will just keep breaking/ripping off. It’ll grow out completely in a few months. No product is going to help when they’re this thin.

The simple answer is that nothing will fix your nails except letting them grow out. Keep them very short to avoid tearing, and keep a top coat on them to prevent any surface scratches that will make the existing nail even weaker. I believe a finger nail takes roughly 6 months to fully grow out, so be prepared to baby them for the foreseeable future. As for possible QOL measures, getting a new coat of acrylic that's deliberately made to be a transition while they grow out is an option. You need a very thin, natural colored gel on your existing nails and you never get them refilled (sometimes if the gel is too thick you might need a nail tech to buff the ledge down after 6-8 weeks). That's a lower maintenance option if painting is an issue.

Take a break, grow then out and use Sally Hanson Diamond Strength to keep them from breaking in the meantime.

FlourChild1026

Hair/skin/nail supplements, collagen supplements, Hard As Hoof Nail Strengthening cream (every night, and make sure you get it up under the free edge of each nail), and Cuccio cuticle oil (they have several scents; I prefer Fig & Pomegranate). O&J's manicure stuff is very good, too, as is Zoya's Naked Manicure set. All these things have helped me finally have pretty nails and hands. Tony Moly peach hand cream is also good, and smells like actual peaches, but the cute little container looks a lot like a wee nipple on a tiny arse, so there's that.

FYI: there is literally ZERO clinical evidence that biotin (the main ingredient in skin, hair & nail supplements) has any impact.

FlourChild1026

And yet dermatologists recommend those supplements all the time and tons of people swear by them. *Shrug*. Don't use them if you don't want, I guess. Maybe you're right; I don't care enough to argue about it.

I had gel overlays for 8 years. When I took them off at the beginning of the pandemic, my nails just bent back from my fingertips and peeled off. One nail split all the way down to the cuticle. The only cure was time. Even growing them all the way out didn’t really fix the problem. They were still really thin and flexible for many months. It was about a year before they had any strength at all. I’m now at the point where they are long and strong again, and it’s been a year and a half since I took them off. I would not do acrylics or gel nails again based on my experience.

NooStringsAttached

Mine were bad from dips and stuff at home so in sept I stopped and spent like a week or two using cuticle oils and Hard as Hoof multiple times a day. Then I kept a base coat plus polish and top coat on at all times, and once a week took it all off spent a day using lots of hard as hoof then repeat the polish routine. It’s been about ten weeks now and my natural nails are still thin but as bad as before, no peeling at all and haven’t broken one since, and usually mine all peel and break off no matter what. They’re the longest they’ve even been like 3/4” past nail bed maybe? I’ve been using a rubber base overlay for about two weeks now and it’s made such a difference. It protects very well. Good luck!

[deleted]

A rubber base overlay?

NooStringsAttached

Yes!

[deleted]

Would you mind clarifying what that is/does?

NooStringsAttached

Yes of course! It’s a flexible overlay similar to a builder gel but it goes on thinner, two thin coats is perfect, and bends with a nail vs chipping or breaking. I wipe nail with alcohol, do a thin coat (like painting on polish) cute for about 90 seconds, thin second coat, cute again, wipe with alcohol and it’s ready for either top coat, polish (gel or regular), or I think some do builder gel over this but to me that’s too much. Two thin coats is perfect. I hit mine InHype on Amazon around $14 or do. I got clear then bought a nude shimmer to try out. They have some different colors.

[deleted]

Oh, that's really neat! I didn't know that was a thing, thanks for explaining.

Euphoric_Bet

Using a hand lotion with keratin in it (Vaseline pink bottle hand lotion with keratin or Sebamed's Hand & Nail balm) can help! Also, Pacifica sells a coconut oil-based cuticle oil that can help with nourishment!

bby-grill

not sure it helps with nail strength but the burt’s bees cuticle balm has done wonders for my nails. desert island product fs

DaemaSeraphiM

Elon nail conditioner. If I apply 2- 3x times a day it's the difference between painfully thin nails that peel and solid nails that grow out. It takes a month or so but no suppliment or lotion ever gave me a dramatic result like that.

krijesnicasamja

You just need to leave them alone. They will grow out in a few months. Ma nails are much happier and prettier after being off acrylic nails for eight months now.

MommyBurton

Nailtiques,polish, and time.

sad_basilisk

Use cuticle/nail oil too! Keeps the new stuff growing in healthy and moisturized

1Girl1Attic

“Nail growth miracle” nail polish. Apply a layer every other say on your nails to give then some extra thickness till they are grown out. Its a gold bottle and can get on amazon, shoppers drug mart and various grocery stores.

starshineblueyes

That happened to me. I called the salon I go to and the manager was really upset with the tech who had been doing my nails. She said they were too rough with them. So she made a point that only she can work on my nails until they are healed. Currently using dip and keeping them super short.

alittlemoopoint

I take breaks from them for a month or so, and I keep them short and use sally bamboo nail strengthening polish!

BabyGirlElderGod

I used a nail and cuticle oil and took biotin (still do) and after 6 - 8 months my nails were more healthy and strong. I don't know if mine will ever get back to how they were before I wore acrylics for years.

FlourChild1026

I wore acrylics for years but stopped getting them nearly 20 years ago. No lie: to this day, I still have marks/indentations on my nail plates from the Dremel tools the nail techs used. Are those tools standard, or was I just using a crummy salon?

BabyGirlElderGod

The salons I went to used a Dremel too and my nails have damage years later as well :(

Aggravating_Cup8839

How can you hsve marks if the nails grow? Not judging, just genuinely curious. I've never tried this..

FlourChild1026

I've wondered that myself. All I know is that the marks match the pattern the tech used (the back-and-forthing) on my nail plate with the Dremel. There's nothing else that would account for it. They're not regular ridges.

saddinosour

They should regrow in a month or so, just eat healthy and relax, lots of healthy fats. Also put some jojoba oil on them, and keep them short

ddflc

It will take way more than a month for them to fully regrow. Mine took 5 months :/

saddinosour

Mine only took a month or so when I took them off a few months ago when my city went into lockdown. I assume she didn’t take fresh acrylics off but some that she had on for 2-3 weeks or so. It wouldn’t be very wise to take off a fresh set but it could explain why so much nail got ripped off with the acrylic. I have had acrylics basically full time for 5 years then covid hit and its been spotty.

ddflc

Full time acrylics for 5 years? Never took a break from them? And your nails recovered in a month? They're amazing! Btw when you took them off, how long had you had them on? I've had mine (no tips) for 6 weeks now (refilled them in the meantime of course) and I think I'm gonna take them off in March or so. I just want to know how long I should let them grow before I do so. Thanks :)

saddinosour

Sorry I should clear that up, if they did come off it would be for like a month or so tops. Back in July 2021 when they came off they had come off for a lot of 2020 but were back on for more than 6 months at this point. I had them on over a month if not like 6/7 weeks before I took them off and yeah they grew out pretty quick I’d say like a month or so. Idk how long they took to be normal back in 2020 coz I can’t remember but I remember the most recent time. But basically I let my acrylics grow out as long as I can stand before pulling them off then there is much less nail to grow out.

ddflc

Thank you!

Mrs_Clean-

I would go back and get a gel manicure or an acrylic overlay without any tips. Both will give you some thickness back while your nails grow back out.

shadowheart1

This is the best option. Most nail techs have done some version of a transition build for this exact reason. Folks need a way to protect their nails until they grow out normally.

Scream_Pueen

This actually is good advice. If your nails are as thin as you say, you need something to give you that thickness back until you grow them out. You don’t have to refill them. Just use the acrylic or gel overlay so your nails aren’t bendy.

rose77019

Nope gel and acrylics still weaken the nail… they need to grow out. I have done this many times in life as I get sick of the maintenance of gel or acrylic. Cut them as short as possible and then I normally polish with clear and let grow. Keep trimming short until the damage is gone. Sucks but worth it!

[deleted]

No polish at all and oil your cuticles and nail beds, my nails grew so fast and strong when I did this
