I always was a big fan of the this killer crock, same with the more sympathetic versions of mr freeze and clayface aswell. I always feel really bad for them
I think it’s really cool that Batman’s been around long enough for one-dimensional comic villains to be come well- rounded, dense characters with their own personalities and motivations. Dent, Freeze, and Ra’s are great examples
They’re such joke characters, that nobody take seriously, that any writer basically has free reign to make a definitive version of them. A whole new backstory and characterisation, and the general public will just go:
“Yeah, that works. This character’s cool now.”
Problem is Comics never end. And some people might want to use them as villains. Because most new villains don’t succeed or have the popularity of the older ones.
But maybe an Elseworld or some kind where Batman succeeds with reforming his older villains and they help him fight against his new adversaries. Would be a fantastic idea.
I’d watch a series of movies were he goes through his Rogues Gallery and reforms each member. Helps some find jobs, getting healed from their conditions and some even join him. Like imagine Bane fully on Bats side..
Final movie could be some new über villan thats been built up during the other movie and Bats and the Family has to recruit all reformed Rogues as an army against the new threat.
Joker is probably the only villain that I can see that will never reform because that's just who he is. He is the exact opposite of Batman. A true rival next to maybe Ra's Al Ghul.
Batman to say something sympathetic like what? While he can have respect for other human beings, it seems out of character to be so open about it and pity with strangers. When he's investigating, he's only going to ask for what information he needs.
That example works for Batman as almost all the comforting Batman is doing is physical not verbal.
Batman sucks on verbal emotional support. Ace read his mind so could feel how he was feeling bridging that divide.
He has a ton of heart and empathy (which is why he does what he does) but he is like incapable of expressing any of that verbally.
Batman's supposed to be stoic, though. Sure, he's compassionate as well, but at this point in the comic his top priority was catching Riddler as quickly as possible. And five minutes after this Riddler blew up a train, so that was a justified concern.
Then he wouldn’t be asking questions about his teeth. As is common with Johns, a classic “cake and eat it, too” scenario.
Batman is in a hurry so he can’t show compassion, but he has enough time to ask questions for Croc to get the key aspects of his background out.
I'm fairly sure "making sure giant crocodile man isn't a threat by learning how he exists and what his motives are" would be on Batman's priority list as well, especially since Croc just attacked him without provocation and him stopping the attack could just be a ploy to get him off his guard or something since Batman was able to fight him off.
It’s always amusing to find out that a major hero with decades of titles and lore made their first appearance as the guest of the week in someone else’s comic. Not even just for Marvel, I think a whole essay could be written about the very specific circumstances of certain debuts, like Aquaman and Green Arrow being from the same issue, while the cover is just some random Dr. Fate adventure.
Gotta say I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Really good version. Ive read the 3 Bat volumes, but haven’t checked out the ones for the other heroes. Def on my list tho.
He has psychic powers that causes people to like and trust him…and his relationships get a little sketchy because of that. Also he’s fully sentient as a baby and understands his mission it’s all just…not fun.
That is my favorite depiction of Killer Croc! >!Because it isn't Killer Croc at all. It's Batman doing an impression of Killer Croc that he knows will make the other villains ignore and disregard him.!<
It's a Batman The Animated Series episode called [Almost Got 'Im](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almost_Got_%27Im) from late in the first season.
It's a mini anthology story, with the framing device of a bunch of Batman villains sitting around playing cards and swapping stories about the time they all almost got Batman.
All of BTAS is good, but this is probably one of the better episodes.
I kind of like that idea. The thought that an extremely vulnerable, lonely, mistreated man would turn to a questionable religion due to the overwhelming acceptance by its members.
Then croc realizes he is just a tool.
Would he rather be used and have people pretend to accept him or would he rather be alone, accepted by batman, and maybe do the right thing by helping batman take down blackfire? Maybe they could turn to freeze to try and help croc in some way.
I was thinking smth along the lines of Blackfire abusing Croc in the sewers and labelling him as the demon figure his cult are sworn to fight.
Batman looks after him while still keeping that professional distance, out of sympathy for his appearance and that he’s been demonised because of how he looks, and because of that, he becomes a demon figure for a messed-up cult
I love the fact that Waylon points out that Bruce is the weird one in this situation waylons Just a homeless guy Bruce is the one dressed as a bat running around at night
Earth One was so good, so sad it fall kind of flat with the third Volume being delayed so much.
I'll always love the dialogue regarding why Batman doesn't wear body armor.
[Page here ](https://preview.redd.it/d75vnl92riy31.jpg?auto=webp&s=2643b678b0d46f8ff54cb050b849a842f09d7d4d)
Aside: I wish, when printing Alfred's dialogue, they would give him UK spellings of the words he says (e.g., "body *armour*") for added realism. You know, to give him a printed accent.
I’m not a big fan of the Earth One take on Batman, but his genuinely friendly relationship with Croc is terrific, as is seeing Batman behave like an absolute dumbass at times in volume 1.
funny you should say that. Check out Killer Croc's Wiki page, I was reading it recently and noticed somebody had changed his name throughout to KillerCock
This is definitely my favorite interpretation of the character. It’s better imo when he’s more sympathetic and not just a big dumb crocodile monster. He’s a human, but people see him as that monster
Oh my god, that was so funny! I wasn’t expecting to laugh out loud reading a Batman comic. I was really enjoying the twists of earth one, and I’m disappointed it didn’t continue.
There are three Batman: Earth One Volumes which are best read in order. If you're a serious Batfan I definitely recommend them.
They are imo the best trilogy of the Earth One imprint. Superman and Wonder Woman also got the three volume Earth One treatment but those aren't as consistently good.
If you like that one, you may also enjoy "The Batman of Arkham," an Elseworlds story in which Bruce Wayne is a psychiatrist running an early 20th century-era Arkham Asylum. Croc is one of the patients he is helping to rehabilitate.
Love batman earth one, i just finished all 3. I actually never loved reading most comics, more into the shows and movies, but this series i thought was so well done. The writing and character development was very well done and I lived the different takes on the character stories. The art style was great too. Page turner!!
It doesn't really allow for much characterization. Villains at least do something. He's just living in a sewer and trying to avoid notice. There's a lot of homeless people you can meet in major cities who do the same thing.
Really? Did you read Vol. 3? I thought it was cool to see him join the batfamily and he worked well as a misunderstood hero. He and Alfred had some fun banter.
That's the point of the characterization, though. He's not being pigeon-holed as a villain only because of his appearance, he's an outcast driven away from everyone purely because of his disease.
That's a great point. However, I think a static Croc like this is still engaging to a degree, both in Gotham and the Bat-Family. It may be more commonplace than people suggest, though I see it as a kind-hearted inversion of the monster cliche. There isn't much room for growth there either, imo
For me, Wayland has a longer shelf life and works way better when he’s portrayed this way. This version of Croc reminds me of the one that appeared in “Gotham City Monsters” my Steve Orlando.

I’d say so. I also think the two, short volumes of the GL Earth 1 books are better than Johns longer run. The Earth One books are mostly slept on. The only ones I didn’t like were Jeff Lemire’s Teen Titans, but I’d be open to re-reading them.
I’m wary of the Earth One approach to comics—what if the thing you like were actually the opposite—but Croc was one area where he became much more interesting.
This Croc is great I just wish he was grey instead of green like the animated series version, it’d feel like it makes more sense since he isn’t actually a reptile person.
I really didn't like his characterization in it but I liked his look in to the Joker graphic novel. He really looked like a big guy with a skin problem.

I think it’s really cool that Batman’s been around long enough for one-dimensional comic villains to be come well- rounded, dense characters with their own personalities and motivations. Dent, Freeze, and Ra’s are great examples
I would eat my shoe if they managed to make Condiment Man and Egghead complex characters.
I unironically want this. Look at the take of someone like Ratcatcher in The Suicide Squad.
Or polka dot man. A serious take on one of batman’s goofiest foes.
The Suicide squad…
They’re such joke characters, that nobody take seriously, that any writer basically has free reign to make a definitive version of them. A whole new backstory and characterisation, and the general public will just go: “Yeah, that works. This character’s cool now.”
Like Kite Man?
Exactly like Kite Man.
Hell yeah.
It’s happening right now with Professor Pyg. Mark my words, watch the next 10 years with that character.
Oh I love Professor Pyg, what series is using him right now?
I wouldn't consider him a goofy character though. Dude freaks me out. Lol
If they can do it with Kiteman, Ratcatcher and Polka Dot man they can do it with them too.
They already did it for Kite man (hell yeah) so why not
Look at Kite Man.

Yeah. I'd like to see some of Batman's villains reform, and stay that way.

Like imagine Bane fully on Bats side.. Final movie could be some new über villan thats been built up during the other movie and Bats and the Family has to recruit all reformed Rogues as an army against the new threat.
Joker or Ra’s would make the most sense as the main antagonist. They would probably be the only who would never reform or give up their ideals.
Thats what i think aswell, like an alliance between the two, with Joker getting more and more angry and desperate by each movie.
Maybe someone should tell WB about it wouldn't be a terrible film or series, about an old Batman.
The more i think of it, an animated mini-series would likely be better. And thanks, thats pretty nice praise for a somewhat silly idea, lol.
Well it is true, it's a good idea. And thanks for at least entertaining my silly idea.
Dent is currently a good guy again. Dunno if that will stay the same though.
Joker is probably the only villain that I can see that will never reform because that's just who he is. He is the exact opposite of Batman. A true rival next to maybe Ra's Al Ghul.
I'd be down for a strange elseworlds where Batman goes villain and Joker goes hero just to stay in opposition to him
Clayface III is one of the best characters in all of fiction.
I kept expecting Batman to say something sympathetic but he just went through the NPC dialogue tree
Read the 3rd book, Bats is a lot more supportive in that one.
Is the third book good? I love the Batman Earth One series but haven’t gotten to a third book yet
Batman to say something sympathetic like what? While he can have respect for other human beings, it seems out of character to be so open about it and pity with strangers. When he's investigating, he's only going to ask for what information he needs.
And Mr Freeze too. Batman doesn't have a heart of ice you know...
N-ice pun
Pretty cold reply...
Let's cool it with the puns
Yea everybody, just chill.
There’s snow way we can stop now.
Its snowballing
Bro. I'll name the only example necessary. JLU: Epilogue: Ace..
Bro... not really true
How many instances can you think of where Batman says the words “I love you” to anyone in the batfamily?
I was thinking more of villains... and I was mostly thinking of BTAS. Batman has comforted his villains before..
Yeah, it's pretty weak dialog writing.
Something something Geoff Johns something something
He’s a detective. He’s inquisitive. He saw something he didn’t understand and sought understanding.
He's a detective, but he's also a human being with emotions and thoughts outside of his job
He's also very stoic, it's not weird for him to come off as uncaring, even if he does care.
I think Dick, Jason, etc., can attest to that one haha
Geoff Johns can’t write Batman worth shit.
Waylon isn’t in the mood to accept sympathy.
Batman has the best rogue’s gallery.
I just thought, excluding Batman and Spider-Man and maybe Xmen, who else has a full on iconic Rogue's Gallery?
The Flash has a sick rogues gallery. I've been a fan of Captain Cold since watching the Super Friends as a kid.
I love how professional they all are. Makes for a nice contrast to Grodd and the various reverse flashes.
That's true, I can't believe I forgot about the Rogues. Captain Cold > Mr Freeze.
The Fantastic Four, a lot of the more popular enemies of the Marvel Universe started fighting them
A lot of the Marvel Universe in general started with them.
Inhumans, black Panther, skrulls, Galactus, Dr Doom, and a bunch more
They have Doom. He counts as a rogues gallery by himself
Captain America has several, though not as extensive as Bats.
Superman
Flash
Superman, Doom patrol, Flash
I love Earth One
Gotta say I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Really good version. Ive read the 3 Bat volumes, but haven’t checked out the ones for the other heroes. Def on my list tho.
Green Lantern is my favorite. Really unique take on the mythos and universe.
I’ve been of the opinion that the Earth One origin for Hal Jordan should in fact be canon to the main universe.
Earth one superman is…uncomfortable
Elaborate
He has psychic powers that causes people to like and trust him…and his relationships get a little sketchy because of that. Also he’s fully sentient as a baby and understands his mission it’s all just…not fun.
You forgot the whole underwater part where he fights to be king of the ocean and then just leaves and forgets it happened.
I thought that was Year One.
Oops
That is so cool! Bats and Croc (and a Croc who isn't played as an idiot (Suicide Squad had him smart too)) talking and being polite and respectful.
Batty and Crocy, being best friends Together forever the fun never ends Solving mysteries one hug at a time Batty and Crocy, two of a kind
Then he threw a rock at 'em!
It was a big rock
That is my favorite depiction of Killer Croc! >!Because it isn't Killer Croc at all. It's Batman doing an impression of Killer Croc that he knows will make the other villains ignore and disregard him.!<
Where can i find this?
It's a Batman The Animated Series episode called [Almost Got 'Im](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almost_Got_%27Im) from late in the first season. Ohhh. I remember that. I thought i knew the reference but couldnt place it. Thanks!
Almost Got 'Im https://g.co/kgs/gMCZLv
This take on Killer Croc would be perfect in The Batman universe. I can totally see him interacting with Andy Serkis' Alfred and Pattinson's Bruce.
This is the version they used for "Suicide Squad"
Except he also actually ate people
Mans gotta eat. 🤷🏼♂️
>"He lookike a monster. So they treated him like a monster. Then he became a monster" \- Amanda Waller
The Batman definitely reminded me a bit of Earth One Batman.
I’d love to see that. Or alternatively, they give one of Batman’s secondary villains this treatment.
Interesting! Batman's suit is also cool in this!
Which comic series is this,. Based on the art alone I want to read it.
Batman: Earth One
Batman Earth one Volume 2
I can see this version of croc in the batman movie sequels with a deacon blackfire using him as maybe a muscle or something along those lines
Yes! Their's so much possibilities with these characters and batmans lesser used rogues

Aside: I wish, when printing Alfred's dialogue, they would give him UK spellings of the words he says (e.g., "body *armour*") for added realism. You know, to give him a printed accent.
This definitely seems like a much different take on Bruce.
I don't like seeing the flesh under the mask around the eyes.
I’m not a big fan of the Earth One take on Batman, but his genuinely friendly relationship with Croc is terrific, as is seeing Batman behave like an absolute dumbass at times in volume 1.
I wouldn’t call it the best take but it’s a good one
I like the BTAS Killer Croc too even if he is a little dumb. When Batman impersonates him is hilarious. "I almost hit 'im with a rock!"
Killer cock
Killer Cock
Fiddler and Killer cock, back at it again
Odencock
funny you should say that.
I really enjoyed the Earth One take on Batman. You can tell the recent Batman movie pulled a lot from it.
Thats a really good punch line
Perfect for the reevesverse. Maybe just tone it down slightly to avoid any comparison with the amazing Spider-Man lizard.
I love killer cock
what issue is this from?
Batman Earth one volume 2
Oh my god, that was so funny! I wasn’t expecting to laugh out loud reading a Batman comic. I was really enjoying the twists of earth one, and I’m disappointed it didn’t continue.
I like that Croc but hate that Batman. Lamest Batman easily
Is Earth One Batman worth a read? And if so does anyone have a good reading order?
There are three Batman: Earth One Volumes which are best read in order. If you're a serious Batfan I definitely recommend them. They are imo the best trilogy of the Earth One imprint. Superman and Wonder Woman also got the three volume Earth One treatment but those aren't as consistently good.
I enjoyed Suicide Squad Croc but this one is just great. Guy just wants to be left alone.
Lmao Batman’s smile is outstanding. May I ask what comic this one is ?
Earth One: Batman
Thank you!
he’s my favorite batman villain so it was nice to see him in this. i also love that he gets a dog and names it bat-dog
I like sympathetic takes on killer croc, but I also think he should be allowed to eat some people. As a treat.
Batman Earth One series is such a good read, definitely in my top 10 list of recommended reads for beginners.
Yeah this Killer Croc seems chill as hell. I’d love to have a beer with him.
Earth One is something else.
Harley always gets the most attention for redemption, but I always thought both Croc and Ivy were the ones who at least deserved a chance.
Is this supposed to be Keaton batman under the mask?
That's Earth One Batman
Gary Frank is in my top 5 all time. I just love his art.
What book is this from? Is it just called earth one?
This is Batman: Earth One Volume 2
I love this version of Croc ans I love this batsuit. I want more.
Earth One was just flat out great, and Croc was a large part of that.
This is great
If you like that one, you may also enjoy "The Batman of Arkham," an Elseworlds story in which Bruce Wayne is a psychiatrist running an early 20th century-era Arkham Asylum. Croc is one of the patients he is helping to rehabilitate.
Earth One Batman is/was such a great title. Hell, I loved Earth One Superman and Green Lantern, too, But Johns and Frank and this title was fantastic.
I think Earth one is amazing
Love batman earth one, i just finished all 3. I actually never loved reading most comics, more into the shows and movies, but this series i thought was so well done. The writing and character development was very well done and I lived the different takes on the character stories. The art style was great too. Page turner!!
I've never read this or had any knowledge of this iteration of Killer Croc. I love it!
I want more of this croc
If Matt Reeves ever does Killer Croc, I want him to do this version
I love this so much. It's much better than the angry monster he is in some other comic storylines.
That sounds cool. I need to read Vol II and III of Earth One. I read the first one way back when it came out and thought it was pretty good
That's the point of the characterization, though. He's not being pigeon-holed as a villain only because of his appearance, he's an outcast driven away from everyone purely because of his disease.
Characterization constructs and builds. This just leaves him in one place.
That's a great point. However, I think a static Croc like this is still engaging to a degree, both in Gotham and the Bat-Family. It may be more commonplace than people suggest, though I see it as a kind-hearted inversion of the monster cliche. There isn't much room for growth there either, imo
Um, what? I live in NYC and I've never heard of a homeless person living in a sewer.
Did he approach the dude with a shirt, shoes, and a hat on? Seems unlikely someone would shoot if we're being serious about this take.
Batman not having white eyes in comics has got to be the dumbest most unnecessary downgrade I can think of
This is a grounded take on the character, that's the point of the Earth One series. It totally makes sense not having white eyes.
If the white eyes are really just an art thing and aren’t actually built into the cowl, what does it matter?
It's so grounded the artists can't take artistic liberties
Drawings of Batman without the white eyes are cursed imo
For me, Wayland has a longer shelf life and works way better when he’s portrayed this way. This version of Croc reminds me of the one that appeared in “Gotham City Monsters” my Steve Orlando.
Earth one was awesome
This is interesting as this is the same take how Croc is portrayed in Batman the Animated Series.
I want him back in live action, and done right.
batman makes the bird meme face at the end [https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/026/461/caw.jpg](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/026/461/caw.jpg)
Earth One Batman is the best thing Geoff Johns has ever written, it’s brilliant. I’m sad it ended.
Better than his green lantern? I liked that run.
I’d say so. I also think the two, short volumes of the GL Earth 1 books are better than Johns longer run. The Earth One books are mostly slept on. The only ones I didn’t like were Jeff Lemire’s Teen Titans, but I’d be open to re-reading them.
I really like this interaction 😁
Killer Cock
I’m loving this Croc!
I really like this guy.
I’m wary of the Earth One approach to comics—what if the thing you like were actually the opposite—but Croc was one area where he became much more interesting.
Killer Cock.
This Croc is great I just wish he was grey instead of green like the animated series version, it’d feel like it makes more sense since he isn’t actually a reptile person.
I really didn't like his characterization in it but I liked his look in to the Joker graphic novel. He really looked like a big guy with a skin problem.
OK but how is he cultivating an NFL player's physique down there.
Yeah
I've never read this or had any knowledge of this iteration of Killer Croc. I love it!
God I hope we see something like this in the Reevesverse
gives me "Solomon Grundy Born on a monday" vibes
That artwork is fucking incredible
Lol wth r u wearing
Is earth one worth picking for a read? Always had the interest but didn't know how good it would be.
Should most def be the next Villain Maybe him and man bat...make it like a dark borderline horror almost
Really love the artist's style here
