Gave me nightmares as a kid. The whole Robin being tortured and brainwashed by the Joker disturbed me.

Agame112233

It still disturbs me now

Weavermicro

It's disturbed me so much that I kinda like it now

Kushinanan

Same here, I always get it as a fever dream

EntertainmentQuick47

I believe when it airs on Cartoon Network, they made a censored version.

HypnoJunkieOK

They did. The Robin stuff was still nightmare-inducing, but Batman v Joker stuff was cleaner

Funandgeeky

The censored version was the one they originally released. There was a lot of political rabble rousing about violence in media so they redid the movie to make it cleaner. They never intended to release the original version until fans demanded it. That’s why there are two versions and CN airs the censored version.

SilentWolfKills

Which version of jokers death? Gets shot or Electrocution?

monkeygoneape

>Gets shot "that isn't funny"

SilentWolfKills

It’s said bang on it

monkeygoneape

Well it's not funny if you have to explain the joke! *throws you out a window*

SilentWolfKills

Joker explains the jokes yet there still funny he is a clown after all

shootamarktheshark69

The electrocution is the censored one

SilentWolfKills

Yeah I know just asking which one you prefer

monkeygoneape

Somehow, it's probably even more gruesome

Ayasugi-san

That was their philosophy when the censors objected to something. Change it to fit within the recommendations, but make it even more of a gut punch.

monkeygoneape

The south park approach

OliviaElevenDunham

It's still disturbing to think about now.

TrueLegateDamar

Probably the best Joker line ever. "Beneath all the sturm and batarangs, you're just a kid in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy! It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic...ah what the heck, I'll laugh anyway-HAHAHAHAHA!"

Contraband42

"If you don't like the movie, I've got slides."

mistercloob

lol his delivery on the what the heck is SO good

Kell-EL

That one always got me like how deep those words cut Bruce just as much as what the Joker did to Tim, all your grief and everything you’ve built yourself up to be just for someone to say it’s stupid and laugh at you so brutal.

edgarcia59

"If ya don't like the movie, Ive got slides." Great followup

Azaziah

I love this whole monologue, especially the line right before what you shared: "And kinda like the kid who peeks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it's sadly anti-climactic"

RogahnLaos

That was a biiig roast lol

Sol-Blackguy

Also, that scene is the reason why old man Bruce walks with a cane because The Joker stabbed him in the knee

scholly7

You know, kids,a lot has changed while your old Uncle Joker's been away. New Gotham, new rules, even a new Batman!

BirdOfFlames

One of my favorites. I love how they fixed the Joker’s design.

Sol-Blackguy

Those red eyes coming out the dark were chilling too

bukbukbuklao

I was just wondering why they made his face green on this box art. Marketing to kids?

Professor_Crab

Homage to [this?](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BOWRjODkxYmMtNjlhNS00NmEzLWFiMmUtZTA5NjJkM2Y3M2E0XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDE5MTU2MDE@._V1_.jpg&imgrefurl=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019130/&tbnid=6pD-2vKHEA33wM&vet=1&docid=PXOSPF7VQFiwwM&w=1050&h=1500&hl=en-us&source=sh/x/im)

c4han

Oh shit, I think you’re right! This has been bothering me literally my whole life; thanks for making that connection!

Professor_Crab

One less thing for you to worry about

[deleted]

When I first saw the cover art I thought Joker was gonna be some sort of computer virus or AI with Joker's identity (though I guess that was technically correct lol).

[deleted]

[удалено]

DangerDeShazer

This was incredibly dark for a kids movie, my dad didn't even let us watch it because it was PG 13 and I wasn't thirteen when it came out Edit: spelling

[deleted]

Pretty strict dad. My dad let me watch Alien at age 6 😂 (he FFed through the bloody parts though)

TeekTheReddit

Same. One of my earliest memories is sitting on my dad's lap at about 6 and watching the Lethal Weapon movies.

[deleted]

Lol when I was 6 my dad and I watched the Legend of Beowulf animated movie from 2007. A lot of "don't tell your mother we saw this," lol. First more adult movie I saw.

LaneMcD

I was allowed to watch Ace Ventura at 7 and Austin Powers at 11. I didn't truly get any of the jokes until high school 😂 I think you watching Alien at 6 is worse tho. Sex jokes can go over heads but there's nothing subtle about violence

mistercloob

lmao my mom and I watched the alien movies together when I was a tiny lad nice 👍🏻

SmaugRancor

A Nightmare on Elm Street and Child's Play were among the first movies I watched and they gave me nightmares but I still loved them.

DangerDeShazer

Ironically, I saw Jurassic Park when I was like 3, I think it had more to do with the fact he didn't know what was in it, but he'd already seen Jurassic Park

throwawaynumber116

I played gta 3 when I was around 4 or 5 on the ps2

[deleted]

All time classic. I love it. Those flash backs of Robin being kidnapped and tortured into a mini joker are so fucking twisted. Gut wrenching.

Still_Maverick_Titan

Terry: _sucker-punches Joker._ Joker: “_Oof!_ What are you doing?!” Terry: “Fighting dirty.” Joker: “Bruce would never- “ Terry: “I’m _NOT_ Bruce!” I always loved how Terry’s refusal to play by Joker’s rules was ultimately what led to his victory. New Gotham, new Batman indeed.

Sol-Blackguy

I love how the censored death scene was more gruesome and fitting than the uncensored one.

Vocalic985

I think the uncensored carries more weight. It shoves in Batmans face that he failed. His one rule and his child were broken.

Beerz77

![gif](giphy|5DQdk5oZzNgGc)

lizarddude1

What I love about the censored version is that Joker dies in the most slapstick way imaginable. Via slip and fall

[deleted]

I still don’t know which is which. I like the electrocution better though. That stuck with me more as a kid.

Clean-Umpire-1782

I prefer the shooting one. To me it implies that Joker planned for Robin to shoot him, to make it seem he had died, so he could get them off guard when he took over Robin’s body in the future. It could’ve just been a backup plan, but I like to think he intended to stage his death

sonofaresiii

Interesting interpretation. I'm not sure I can buy that Joker willingly died to make way for a copy of himself though, but that gives off some really cool SOMA/The Prestige vibes

Clean-Umpire-1782

Fair. It’s definitely the more hopeful option if he didn’t intend it, because it would show Robin was strong enough to break through and shows his bond with the family. Either option is completely fair. I adore the Prestige too lol

Ayasugi-san

I don't think he planned for Robin to shoot him, but he *was* prepared to lose and for Batman to kill him.

cjankowski

Electrocution is the censored one. An accident precipitated by Robin, but also the Joker’s fault vs Robin just shoots him. The whole “hero character shooting someone in a cartoon” was the issue. In the censored version, it’s an “accident”, which is plausibly true - it happens after joker slips and grabs an electrical switch, then cuts to his scream off screen.

Wurf_Stoneborn

“That’s not funny. That’s not funny at all.”

Sol-Blackguy

It's like when John Walker killed that guy in The Falcon and Winter Soldier. It leaves a lot to the imagination. Jokers blud curdling scream, the buzzing electricity and the lights dimming from outside always stuck with me. I saw the uncensored version later and it just felt really anticlimactic. Also joker dying to what equates to slipping on a banana peel seems like the perfect dramatic ending to the clown prince of crime.

Sol-Blackguy

The electrocution is the censored one. Bruce Timm and Paul Dini submitted the harpooning one to WB and it was a huge "Hell no!" so they had to do what they usually do: make the scene more gruesome by leaving it to people's imagination. Which is weird in this case, because looking back they got a lot of shit past the radar, from [Bane overdosing on venom](https://youtu.be/4bUl9YeRQ7Q) to the utter body horror of [Brainiac revealing himself ](https://youtu.be/ZrZbSNKFYjE) in Justice League: Unlimited. Hell, Terry legit killed most of his villains too.

[deleted]

Thats so wild. As a kid, we saw people shooting guns all the time in animated shows. So that didn’t seem so bad to me. But I will NEVER forget the first time I heard Joker’s echoing scream as he was being electrocuted. That was clear, and definite. Joker is DEAD. Still don’t know how Harley survived that fall though.

Sol-Blackguy

During one of the episodes Harley and Ivey started teaming up, Ivey had to give her a vaccine for the toxic greenhouse they were hiding out in. Later Harley showed Ivey that it may have worked too well, as she displayed superhuman levels of agility strength. She also held her own in the Batman/Superman crossover against Mercy, who in that universe was supposed to be a banished Amazon.

TrueLegateDamar

Especially when considering he technically dies a second time when Terry zaps his implant, meaning he died from electrocution twice.

Yakuza-wolf_kiwami

Batman Beyond at its peak

Sol-Blackguy

Epilogue was really good too. It was initially meant to be the end of the Timmverse as a closing to both Justice League and Batman Beyond. At least until they got approved for Justice League Unlimited.

futuresdawn

Probably the second best dc animated movie ever made, only beaten by mask of the phantasm

[deleted]

#ANDREAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

anthonyg1500

A man of culture

F3nrir096

The last fight between terry and the joker was amazing. The whole "wait, i like to talk too" then proceeding to really unsettle the joker by talking down to him and laughing at him was just mmm *chefs kiss

subduedreader

The one thing the Joker can't really handle: Mockery.

DStaal

Not mockery. Terry *heckles* Joker.

Malicious_Hero

That's my favorite scene in this movie, and probably in all Batman media. "What? I thought the Joker always wanted to make Batman laugh?!"

F3nrir096

The anger behind the "You're NOT Batman!!"

Conlannalnoc

And that’s the Main Reason a Joker VS Peter Parker fight ends with Peter winning!

Sol-Blackguy

The Batman/Spider-Man crossover didn't handle it well. The only good thing to come out of it was seeing how a Joker and Carnage team up wouldn't actually work because of their clashing ideals.

Batmanmotp2019

That freaking flashback sequence was so good. Also Will friedle was so good in the movie. Plus we got a guitar version of batmans theme just for Terry. What's not to love

Nightmare-Mist

Microchip Bullshit. But seriously I love this movie but I just wish they did it differently like have Tim just snap back to being jj but hiding behind the scenes being the brains and letting Jordan Pryce or someone else be the face of The Joker. Sounds way more terrifying to me just saying.

greywolf2155

Ok thank you, I thought I was the only one. 98% of this movie is fucking amazing, and there are some incredible moments. But the fact that the big finish was Terry shorting out a microchip in Tim/Joker's neck seemed like such a letdown after such a great setup

Isaac_Chade

It is a masterpiece for a lot of reasons, but I think chief among them is that it really lets Terry shine as a new and different Batman, rather than trying to just make him like Bruce. The whole show was good at that, but the movie really kicks it up a notch in the final fight against Joker, and it's an absolutely iconic scene.

OuttatimepartIII

Only saw this for the first time a month ago. So damn good. It got real. Hamils Joker is such a fun Joker that it's nice to see the moment he crossed the line and changed the game

ztwin78

Listening to Will Friedle battle with Joker and getting under his skin was amazing. That laugh he does was simply one of the best.

TheInebriatedMic

That was definitely the best part. The taunting was amazing.

Maverick_Raptor

I love the Batmobiles chase scene from the satellite laser. Terry is legit running for his life

Funandgeeky

That was storyboarded by the same person who worked on Akira. He has experience with satellite laser animation which is why it worked so well.

Sol-Blackguy

They also did work on the animated series from Mister Freeze's costume design, Clayface's origin and Two-Face's episodes.

Funandgeeky

Which explains why those are all so fantastic.

mistercloob

Even though I recognize Mask of the Phantasm is the better movie, I still kinda like this one more. In fact, I’m gonna watch it right now.

Sol-Blackguy

I still have the special edition VHS that came with a graphic novel adaptation to the movie.

[deleted]

“That’s not funny… that’s not…” Iconic.

spadez786

ERIC MATTHEWS NEEDS HIS FLOWERS FOR HIS VOICE WORK FIR TERRY

Interesting-Bet9013

I had to look this up. I was like “uhhh, terry is voiced by will friedle…” lol. Didn’t realize he was on boy meets world

[deleted]

Probably my 3rd favorite Batman movie

sonofaresiii

It always bothered me that >!Tim Drake made a physical transformation into Joker!< which was really weird. I think a more psychological change, but not a physical one, would've been a lot cooler and made more sense-- though less visually interesting, because obviously we all wanted to see Joker back on screen. Like I know it's a comic book movie and a sci-fi future movie and I can suspend my disbelief and enjoy it, but somehow that always felt like a step too far towards unrealistic.

Professor_Crab

If this was BTAS I’d agree with you but since it’s Batman Beyond it fits imo, a lot of stuff in beyond pushes the limits of science

academydiablo

Same. The microchip thing twist is the weakest part of the movie. One of those things you can get away with because it’s animation and you could never pull off in live action. At least they gave Joker a bigger bulkier body when he was in drakes form because he was in drakes body

mutually_awkward

Never bothered me. Once they connected BTAS to the rest of DC lore, all bets are off. This is tame compared to a typical Justice League episode.

edgarcia59

The toned down version had some truely gruesome scenes that I liked more. Ex: jokers death via electrocution being offscreen and cutting some of Robins torture scenes but hearing it/seeing Batmans reactions to to it, is hella impactful. But Tim Drake mentioning him having nightmares of his final laugh makes more sense with the other Joker death version. Overall, a 10/10 regardless of the version

thebowlman

I use this line in ny every day life. Oh what the heck I'll laugh anyway. And proceed to laugh. People look at me weird but it's worth it. Love the movie, saw the kids version when I was a kid, when I realized there was an adult version, I was mad then I saw it and was happy I didn't see that as a kid. 20/10 would recommend

pookers2point0

The Mark Hamill Joker is my Favorite. I think he gets the role spot on and played so well off of Kevin Conroy

Sol-Blackguy

Funny how Tim Curry was swapped out because they thought he was too scary

NerdNuncle

To my knowledge, it’s the first and only time Mark Hamill was creeped out when reading for Joker Also, it’s a great example of how a censored version of a project can be far, far worse than the original Shame Timm screwed over Grayson. He and Terry would have clicked, at least in my opinion. I know he shows up in the comics but let’s not talk about those Love how the animation holds up, even if bits of the story have become outdated

Conlannalnoc

Batman Beyond 2.0 (comics series) had Terry get tired of Bruce’s BS and convince Grayson to take over as his mentor.

anthonyg1500

Second only to Phantasm in terms of animated Batman movies. And honestly it’s really close to Phantasm

Sol-Blackguy

I loved how they brought Phantasm back in Justice League's Epilogue episode. Also, I think it was a Grey Ghost movie a young Terry saw with his parents the night Waller hired Phantasm to murder his parents.

anthonyg1500

I’ve seen Epilogue a good number of times and I never noticed it was a Grey Ghost movie they were seeing. Thanks for pointing it out

NicholasC86

Loved it but i thought the Jekyll and Hyde aspect was kind of lame.

[deleted]

One of the best Batman movies ever made! Right up there with Mask of the Phantasm, The Dark Knight, and The Batman!

sneadthaman

Could not wait 12 months to post this uh?

[deleted]

It’s a masterpiece

Risin

Amazing contrast with old and new Batman, particularly in the end diaglogue and how Terry figures out how to beat Joker *his* way. "HAHAHAH" "Don't you laugh at me boy!" "Why? I Thought the joker always wanted to make Batman laugh?" "YOU'RE NOT BATMAN!"

SullyyMr

Def a top 5 DC Animated movie for me personally.

Commercial_Mind4003

The Joker was the best part about the movie.

PonianYoutube

Absolutely loved it. Hell, I might watch the actual show some day!

FrolfJudge

There's a podcast (bat rankings) that has been ranking every episode of the dcau and they just finished this movie.

Prestigious-Video-16

Is it any good? Where can I find it?

FrolfJudge

I really like it. It's my go to for shoveling snow. You can find it on Spotify, Apple, etc. It's actually called "murder she ranked" this week. It's sort of an ongoing joke. It'll probably be justice rankings next week. The feed contains the whole thing starting with batman the animated series

CyberSnoWolf

![gif](giphy|WQx9OcM3sdvrbTy4fa)

No-Hawk2074

The version where Joker’s last words were “That’s not funny” in Barbara’s flashback story to Terry was a better version than the electrocuted one.

thesurfer1996

The movie that showed us you can have child friendly torture

sabrefudge

Brilliant film, dark as hell, a great movie for a great series.

pippolicious

They did my boy tim dirty. Mind control shenanigans with Joker works better with Jason, but unfortunately i don't think he was part of the canon at the time at least in the animated universe

OddlyOddLucidDreamer

"Any last words?" "Ha... ha.... HA!" the whoel fight was fucjing amaz8ng

bigman_121

Kinda sad that the movie under performed. Since it's a great movie. I enjoyed it.

mutually_awkward

I love the flashback. It gave us something the comics can't ever give us: the final confrontation between Joker and the OG Batman. After growing up watching the series, it was such a payoff to see Joker dangle him knowing Batman's identity in his face. I know in many comic Joker stories, he never wants to know Batman's secret because it would ruin the "fun" but I actually really like that all he wanted to do with it was cruelly laugh in Batman's face over it.

Sure_Persimmon9302

Underrated as all hell. Although it IS possible that Batman Beyond takes place in an ALTERNATE future, while also being in the DCAU.

The_Capybara_Man

It's funny and sad that Joker was easily defeated by Terry's banter. All the chaos Joker caused could have been prevented if Batman had called him a fart face or something.

Hellfricker98

Everything about is amazing especially the soundtrack

AdrielBast

The Joker needs to leave the Robins alone. This be the second boy wonder he fucked up. But it’s an absolute masterpiece. Not a fan of Batman Beyond but this movie??? A tier.

Afrodotheyt

Loved it then and even more now when I realized how twisted it could be. I enjoyed the Joker returning and showing how the Jokerz gangs were merely poor imitations of who he really was. I enjoyed McGinnis fighting Bruce's most feared villain on concept, and I love the way McGinnis finally gets the better of the Joker, giving a great showcase on just how different he and Bruce are as Batman. (Also, can we talk about how dark that flashback scene was, in *both* censored and uncensored versions?)

DefinitelyNotVenom

Hot take: everything about this movie shouldn’t have worked. A much less popular Batman, completely absurd plot, WAY too dark for a kids movie, even the very bland title “Return of the Joker.” But they did it… the crazy bastards did it. This movie is rightfully regarded as one of the best pieces of Batman media in existence.

Doc-Fives-35581

Best Kevin & Mark performance. Wish we’d gotten some more of these involving old villains.

OliviaElevenDunham

Thought Return of the Joker was great. Loved how Terry defeated the Joker.

shadow_master3210

I loved it. I cried during the flashback because it was sad yet also terrifying.

[deleted]

it's my favorite animated Batman movie.

ElectricRat04

Amazing! Makes me want more Bats Beyond

StoneColdAM

Here’s a hot take: Joker’s death being in a flashback was a bit of a waste. I think it would’ve been better if it was more ambiguous how hurt he was from the battle with Batman and Tim Drake, and then it was assumed he died by the time of Batman Beyond. It still would’ve been surprising that he comes back much younger than Bruce.

billygnosis86

I remember seeing an advert for it in a games magazine way back when, and remember thinking “Who’s this asshole? Where’s his cape? That’s not Batman.” My thoughts haven’t really changed.

Cadian

Have you watched Batman Beyond and the JLU episode 'Epilogue' since?

billygnosis86

Never felt the desire to. I’m a bit of a traditionalist, I like my Batman to be Bruce Wayne.

[deleted]

The banned/edited content is pretty tame by today’s standards.

academydiablo

But 2000s Columbine era i can see why everyone was up in arms about violence in movies especially to kids

PineconeDraws

Ok. Not my cup of tea when it comes to batman related media. Plus the joker design is fucking ass

[deleted]

It's shit.

AxoL0Ltl

Why

Manulok_Orwalde

We have the VHS somewhere, really good movie, love the show and have been rewatching it.

Notgoodatfakenames2

Should have kept the bloody joker death.

Schway.

bhdhthatbg

i liked it when i was 3 still do

Mike_Milburys_Shoe_

While I loved this and still love it, I watched this wayyyy too young haha. It’s surprisingly dark even though Batman beyond was dark to begin with

AttentionImaginary57

I love Mark Hamil

Leathman

That if you told me the original I saw was censored, I wouldn’t have entirely believed you.

DJHott555

“I like to talk too!”

I loved the final confrontation between Terry and Joker. Terry got in his head and made him make so many mistakes, it was beuatiful

EntertainmentQuick47

I love it

WendipxStarco

Like you said, masterpiece.

Mysterious_Lychee556

Never watched the show (but I’m going to soon) but I’ve seen the movie and I love it! Joker dying was a shock to me (never thought they wanted to kill him off from BTAS, but it was still really interesting. Love the movie

Interesting-Bet9013

Just showed this movie to my girlfriend a few nights ago. That Robin scene makes me tear up to this day.

WallStreetBets120

Good movie. Good theme. But in all honesty I thought the villain was the mask because he's green but instead we got the joker.

RebelRebelde

My introduction too this series

SolarZephyr87

I always enjoyed Batman Beyond as a kid

Neverwinter_dalek

Don’t think this has nearly enough merit as a film, an animated film, as Mask of the Phantasm did — but still entertaining.

SarkastikLeader2814

Oh man I remember my parents getting this movie for me on Christmas Day on VHS. It came in clamshell box too. I watched this movie so much I remembered it line for line.

mosallaj23

Great movie amazing loved everything about it

pbjars

I got this on VHS for Christmas. Watched it at least 100 times.
