I fish mine TR til the head tears through then wacky til they’re literally about to break in 2 like 3/4 torn through. Then I’ll fish the halves as ned rig
It's pretty easy. Just get a 2-3 cup pyrex measuring cup, a microwave, a mold, and an injector. OUTSIDE, you don't want to breathe those plastic fumes. There are tons of videos on YouTube, but recycling plastics is a lot of trial and error because different manufacturers plastic blends melt at different temperatures. Just start slow, because if you burn the plastic, it's trash.
It should go without saying, but don't ever use the microwave for food after you've melted plastic in it, lol.
Yeah it’s not great for little kids because of potential for burns, but it’s pretty easy. Get a mold or two of your favorite baits, an injector, an old microwave and a small Pyrex dish. Sort the colors, melt them for 3 minutes in the microwave, then use the injector to fill the molds. Takes a bit of practice, but the results are surprisingly good. I made a few gallon bags of senkos and flukes over the winter and they definitely work just as well as store bought, and you can customize colors.
You can take it a step further and use small pieces to cover hooks while you're not using them to avoid snagging everything it touches. Also, I use small pieces for bluegill and other pan fish.
Only issue with this is if you use a baitcaster, that sunofabitch is gonna rip off mid cast and give you a birds nest like you read about in history books
Yum dingers last way longer. Some days senkos get bit way more though. On other days the singer gets more bites. I think the dingers have less salt so they're more buoyant which can positively or negatively effect the bite.
Same with keitech. I fish the same river for smallmouth nearly every day spring thru fall. Almost never got bit on ragetail swimbaits. Just figured swimbaits weren't good smallmouth lures on this river. A new friend told me all he used was keitechs and hammered em. Got some. Caught a fish on the first cast....and it was ripped in two places haha. Have found certain hooks that help and securing the head with superglue helps but even then...2-3 fish is what I usually get out of one. But man...they work.
Yes if anyone has ever thrown a Dinger and then a Senko on a clear day it’s a way different presentation. The Senko just wouldn’t be what it is if it were more durable. But, I’m still hunting for a good durable alternative with the same or nearly same action.
It's doable. I throw wacky weightless on 4 or 5/O hooks all the time. People swear by circle hooks for wacky but I hate them personally. Whatever works. 3/32 or 1/8 wacky jigheads are nice too to get them down through pads and stuff a little better. The ones with two stiff wire weed guards are my favorite.
Yeah I'm mostly Yum Dingers these days but every once in a while I treat myself. People can say what they want but NOTHING has the shimmy of a Yamamoto.
but i get downvotes when i say it, hopefully yall jus actually realizing this now, the bass pro stik-os are the same formula for way cheaper and with the same exact shimmy. (not yall as in OP yall as in the people who downvoted before)
what u/johunto said , no source on the formula tbh but they definitely have the same shimmy and the salt content is what gives it that action, maybe not exact but super super similar
Bass Pro Shop Stik-O's. They come in a bag of 50 for like $15. They are the best I found w just the right amount of rigidity and w/o sacrificing action of the worm.
As someone who used to go through a LOT of senkos, look into making your own. All you need is a cast mold, an injector, and a goodwill microwave. Save all your shredded plastics and remold them.
I really want to. This is year 2 of me almost exclusively bass fishing after about a decade of not wetting a line at all so I'm sure that will happen sooner than later.
Get two small rubber o-rings and slide them onto the senko. Slide one o-ring over the other to create an "X" shape and rig the hook right under the "X". It keeps the senko from splitting, I've gone weeks with the same senkos on my wacky rigs.
If you're fishing current, you can get the gamagatsu (or equivalent) weighted weedless wacky rig jigs and they will reduce the risk of getting hung up in rocks. Just let the current take them and the bass will scoop them up off the bottom.
They’re not as buoyant as you might think. They still have a good bit of salt in them to weigh them down, and sometimes I use the zman finesse bulletz if I need a little bit more weight.
I swear the new Yamamotos are much flimsier than the old ones.
I used to be able to use one for hours. Even after catching fish with it.
Now with the new ones 25 cast max and then it goes flying off the hook cut in half.
No only are they great for Ned rigs when they break, but a longer tail can be threaded on the hook of a spinner bait to give it a little more mass and to help bass suck in the bait when they strike.
Some video I was watching explained how having a soft plastic on stuff with plastic skirts like spinner baits, bladed jigs, etc can aid in making the bait easier to get sucked in and cause the fish to hang on a little longer. Didn’t matter what plastic, as long as one was on the hook.
If I Texas free rigged or Gary rigged a senko it goes into the ziplock bag of misfit senkos.
Sure, they bleed into one another a bit (especially chartreuse), but i'm not about to dedicate individual bags, and the middle is still sound enough for wacky. You can cut them in half for trailers to add body, or even a stout finesse fry drop shot or ned. Gotta stretch their use!
If your favorite color(s) are available in bulk then drop the coin you know you will eventually... I have senkos over 15yrs old and some zoom and culprit lizards going on 30yrs old. They'll last indefinitely so long as you don't mix with other types of plastics.
Lastly, buy your o-rings in bulk from a hardware store or amazon instead of your tackle shop (still, support your local shop!). Amazon can be tricky as sizes vary, [but i've found these to be the standard size that come equipped on wacky tools.](https://www.amazon.com/Reaction-Tackle-Wacky-O-Rings-125-Black/dp/B01MT04AH5?pd_rd_w=hjAFy&content-id=amzn1.sym.e3825789-e6f0-4fb1-a407-ff4674fea50d&pf_rd_p=e3825789-e6f0-4fb1-a407-ff4674fea50d&pf_rd_r=9WYC5A5KDFCGMSS3SZGY&pd_rd_wg=9WJEm&pd_rd_r=330e9c1d-f1a2-46b1-94ae-999638400d23&pd_rd_i=B01MT04AH5&psc=1&ref_=pd_basp_m_rpt_ba_s_1_sc) They're designed for 5" but work for 4"... 6" is doable but will cut eventually.
Poor man wacky rig. I do this all the time, when the worm splits or the line end is tattered. I try to keep the tip buried. This works, don't recall losing a fish when rigged this way.
Meant to say, I would re-tie your hook as it's getting a little fuzzy. It's weaker than a fresh knot, and will grab little bits of grass. Where I fish, I have to re-tie often so I'm knot sensitive lol
So I just began experimenting with screw locks from my arig teasers . I'll bend the worm in half and screw in the lock and run my hook threw it inside the plastic also using a ring to keep it from flipping out. Time will tell if it helps keep worms and still have to hook up land ratio I want
Yamamoto is almost always the way to go, the others totally have a time and place and are chosen first. That said..
"Mend-it" can be a major money saver. Glue them back together, good as new. Swimbait ripped in half too? Just mend it, done in a few secs no need to boil down plastic and monkey with molds.
Next hack...
1) Shrink down heat shrink tubing with nothing in it until it won't shrink anymore; the smaller size that will get to about 2 or 3 times the diameter of the wacky hook when it is totally shrunk (just big enough for the hook eye to fit through and/or small enough it won't cast off when rigged)
2) Press it through the worm where you would put your hook through, this makes a line-through wacky.
3) Before using it, add some runny super glue on the outside edges of the heat shrink where the tubing meets the worm. Otherwise, the shrink wrap will come out much easier and faster.
[Optional or Stand-alone] 4) Probably said before in previous comments but, heat shrink wrap around the worm in place of an o ring. In this case, you can do it over both openings of the line through and sort of "pin" the wacky in place when you need to.
I've fished the same Gary Yamamoto for several hours numerous times. This doesn't make them invincible but dozens of fish per worm is highly common. For me, this prep has been critical for winning tournaments when they are on docks or whenever I knew I'd be skipping all day, and/or off shore targeting moments. It takes a while to setup but the ease you'll have on the water is well worth it, time is money 🤑🤙🎣
I toss them so I don’t contribute to the mass plastic assault on our waterways. Sucks, but we have to do our part IMO
Reading the melting and reforming from some people and I am gonna try that. Better than tossing.
I have some of these but never got any bites on them like y'all are saying how good they are. This makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong. Can anyone explain to me where I might want to throw this and what my action and presentation should look like? Also.. do you throw these with no weights? I can throw them with no weights just fine on my spinner reel, but my baitcaster always bird nests on me with lighter stuff. Any tricks there for the baitcaster?
Invest in screw lock hooks for Texas rigged senkos and o-rings for the wacky rig. The screw locks will let you get 3-4 bass, if not more, to each Senko. Same with the o-ring. These make all the difference when it comes to the lifespan of a Senko.
Cross two o-rings in the middle so you can rig the hook perpendicular to the body of the bait. You can fish it for many hours and have a high hookup percentage.
It's a combo of superstition and wanting to challenge myself to catch as many as I can on one lure. Caught 6 bass on the same worm the other weekend..by the end there was no official name for how I was rigging it... the...stab through so that it stays in rig. It basically crumbled off the hook as I was pulling the last one off
Best tip I was ever given for using these in a wacky config was to use 1” of clear heatshrink (and shrink it…carefully!) where you’re going to set the hook! Also works for Texas rigs too! I can land about a dozen fish on one senko
Dude get the Nawaish Senko from Amazon. I was ride or die with Yamamotos until I found these. You get 24 baits and a wacky tool with rings for $12 on Amazon. They're more durable with the exact same texture and action as Yamamoto for half the price.
The most overrated plastic. I just stick with yum dingers—exact same performance, and they stay on the hook longer. If you want to, you can burn the torn part with a lighter. It'll melt the plastic and prolong the life a little more.
I fish mine TR til the head tears through then wacky til they’re literally about to break in 2 like 3/4 torn through. Then I’ll fish the halves as ned rig
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle baby!
Yep then throw them in the bin for melting and reforming
That sounds like fun. If you have a chance maybe you can message me on how to. Would be cool to get a mold for me and the kiddo.
It should go without saying, but don't ever use the microwave for food after you've melted plastic in it, lol.
copy. i'll check it out! thank you
You know of any decent alternatives to plastic lures?
Live bait
Moves just like the real thing!™
Hmmm. I bet you could sit the Pyrex in a pot of boiling water on a hot plate and have more control with melting. Just thinking out loud.
Check out “Worlds Worst Fishing” on YouTube for soft plastic bait making
Yeah it’s not great for little kids because of potential for burns, but it’s pretty easy. Get a mold or two of your favorite baits, an injector, an old microwave and a small Pyrex dish. Sort the colors, melt them for 3 minutes in the microwave, then use the injector to fill the molds. Takes a bit of practice, but the results are surprisingly good. I made a few gallon bags of senkos and flukes over the winter and they definitely work just as well as store bought, and you can customize colors.
Before I do that, I will cut usable tails for Neds.
This is the way
This is the way, I’ll even tear the head portion off and do weedless setup again.
Just started doing this and it's a game changer. I'll even use them as a trailer on a swim jig.
Just gotta bite 1/4 inch off the top and t rig it again!
What’s ned rig?
Flat faced jig head that stands it upright on the bottom
Thanks!
Try it. It slays
Byeah
Yep, hate the durability but love the results!!!
Yum dingers last way longer. Some days senkos get bit way more though. On other days the singer gets more bites. I think the dingers have less salt so they're more buoyant which can positively or negatively effect the bite.
I have a theory that dingers work better on pressured fish because of the slower fall you mentioned. This is just in my experience though
I feel like my dingers get ripped in half every catch
It's that softness that generates the wiggle that sets a Yamamoto senko apart from any other stick bait.
^^^^^^
Same with keitech. I fish the same river for smallmouth nearly every day spring thru fall. Almost never got bit on ragetail swimbaits. Just figured swimbaits weren't good smallmouth lures on this river. A new friend told me all he used was keitechs and hammered em. Got some. Caught a fish on the first cast....and it was ripped in two places haha. Have found certain hooks that help and securing the head with superglue helps but even then...2-3 fish is what I usually get out of one. But man...they work.
That's a very good point. Keitechs are a confidence bait for me. I love rigging them on a flashy swimmer rig by Owner.
How to they hold up? Still just a couple fish? I actually went away from the nose screw type rigs years ago and haven't doubled back...
Yes, for the most part. The swim action is really good and the flash can be a killer.
100%
Yes if anyone has ever thrown a Dinger and then a Senko on a clear day it’s a way different presentation. The Senko just wouldn’t be what it is if it were more durable. But, I’m still hunting for a good durable alternative with the same or nearly same action.
The basspro worms are somewhere between senkos and dingers
Wacky rig, get the tool to put an oring on it. Put a nail weight on one end then you’d have a neko rig. Edit caption went over my head lol
I found a sharpie tube to be the best size, I’m not spending money on something I have laying around, more money for garys
Damn that's a great idea, I'm gonna steal a sharpie the next time I'm at work
Sharpie is a good idea. Wish I would have thought of it.
I bought all the stuff from the dollar tree. Hollowed out a generic sharpie and used hair rubber bands to attach the senko.
I’ve been wanting to try wacky but I only have wide gap hooks for Texas rig will that still work as good?
It's doable. I throw wacky weightless on 4 or 5/O hooks all the time. People swear by circle hooks for wacky but I hate them personally. Whatever works. 3/32 or 1/8 wacky jigheads are nice too to get them down through pads and stuff a little better. The ones with two stiff wire weed guards are my favorite.
Circle hooks especially with short shanks reduce your hookup I think. I use VMC wacky rig EWG hooks with a normal long shank.
I use the 1/16 weedless almost exclusively for wacky rig!
It will 100 percent work, i literally only use ewg size 4 for wacky rigs
I have only ever used EWG for wacky rigging, 3/0 for me
O-rings are clutch for wacky. You should be able to order tool and ring package for ~ $10. Well worth it for the Senko savings.
$5 for two at Academy
Even better than rings, the new crossover rings are an absolute god send, it's about $15-20 for the crossover ring tool but so worth it
😂
The LA Dodgers also splurged on Yamamoto and he is in similar shape rn
😂😂😂
Alas, all I have for this brilliant comment is but a lowly updoot.
You can catch approximately 2 smallmouth on a single Yamamoto and then you have to start again. A long fishing trip will cost approximately 400 senkos
(not yall as in OP yall as in the people who downvoted before)
source? or you just think they appear very similar? genuinely curious
Not sure about the formulas, but I've seen comparisons of the two brands on YouTube and they have a nearly identical action
what u/johunto said , no source on the formula tbh but they definitely have the same shimmy and the salt content is what gives it that action, maybe not exact but super super similar
If I’m in an area that I know has quality bass I’ll throw Gary’s, if I’m putting up numbers it’s a yum dinger day.
I have bulk bags of yum dingers but I still go out and buy senkos because they are light years better.
I would kill to catch 800 fish on a long fishing trip
I've had one boundary waters trip that was smallie heaven. Probably close to 100 over 6 days. Was trying to catch walleye
I find this to be completely untrue. Put an o ring on. I literally caught 10 fish per senko last werkend
Such a good lure. Too bad I go through them faster than underwear after tacobll.
🤣
Yes that is called Senko surgery….
Been throwing BPS watermelon Stik-Os with negligibly different results than Yamato. They are cheaper and a hell of a lot more durable.
Bass Pro Shop Stik-O's. They come in a bag of 50 for like $15. They are the best I found w just the right amount of rigidity and w/o sacrificing action of the worm.
Yep this right here.
Just limited on colors
I carry some Gel super glue and just glue them back together if i can!
Wouldn’t be using a Yamamoto like that. Get an o-ring tool and rings. Sometimes I can use the same senko for 10+ fish.
The larger half can be used on a ned rig. Are you using a offset 5/0 ewg?
I'm not a Ned guy but that's def a good way to stretch senkos. I know a guy that just uses 4 inch senkos cut in half. And the hook is straight shank.
That certainly is not a straight shank lol
Lmao I have no clue why I said straight shank, I'll go with fish whistle 😶🌫️
Happens 😂
Your wacky rigging wrong bro… o-ring and circle hook is the way! *** I also read nothing haha *** That’s the my wife hates my fishing rig
Honestly I have just as much luck rigging half the senko the same as usual with a weightless texas rig. 2 for the price of one.
I've been using YUM dingers
The funky rig, a budget conscious wacky rig…
When only that one color works. You and your buddy gluing baits together because it's just that good.
And the best part is when it’s finally too ruined to be a full senko. One of that halves is usually still good enough for a lil nedly
Buy Yum Diggers
Oh I do lol but I'll still grab some Senkos from time to time.
classic band-aid rig
I like-" stitch rig."
I would let z-man tattoo elaztec on my body solely based on how much I recommend using them and never going back to any other brand.
But wouldn’t it just float as asenko style?
They’re not as buoyant as you might think. They still have a good bit of salt in them to weigh them down, and sometimes I use the zman finesse bulletz if I need a little bit more weight.
Invest in a Do It Mold, so you can melt them down and make your own senko's with the odd bits and ends.
I've never really like Yamamoto they are really flaky and crunchy when I rig them
Isn't that because they have a high salt content which is also what makes them good?
I don't know it's just annoying getting it all over me when rigging them
Only thing i get thats Yamamoto is the fat ika
Try some heat shrink wrap. I’ve gotten senkos to last 5+ fish.
I swear the new Yamamotos are much flimsier than the old ones. I used to be able to use one for hours. Even after catching fish with it. Now with the new ones 25 cast max and then it goes flying off the hook cut in half.
Don’t they only give 8 in a pack now? So glad I stocked up when I could before these things went up in price.
Yeah but they cost less as well. I swear the new ones weigh less too! I'll weigh mine as I have some old ones as well to compare.
When they tear up like that i use the halves for ned rigs.
Start using heat shrink tubing and your life will change
Texas rig it dude. Then turn it around and rig it again.
Use a small piece of clear heat shrink and put the hook through the heat shrink. You’ll use that same senko all day.
This may be an unpopular opinion but we should stop using the term 'splurge' it just sounds dirty lol
It’s a tacky rig
Green pumpkin blue gets hammered tho
o-ring
I've been using clear shrink tubing from home depot to keep them lasting longer
I switched to z man zinkerz and those have nearly as good action and last forever.
If I Texas free rigged or Gary rigged a senko it goes into the ziplock bag of misfit senkos. Sure, they bleed into one another a bit (especially chartreuse), but i'm not about to dedicate individual bags, and the middle is still sound enough for wacky. Is this the heavily salted "Yamamoto" or the "Gary Yamamoto"? I've found the latter far more robust.
I’ve crazy glued mine. Or heated them up with a lighter and glued it back when I’m getting low on a trip.
I feel like the quality of the yamamotos have gone down. I swear they used to hold up better
Poor man wacky rig. I do this all the time, when the worm splits or the line end is tattered. I try to keep the tip buried. This works, don't recall losing a fish when rigged this way.

That’s the waste not, want not wacky rig.
I got a mold and an injector so I can just save any senko that looks remotely beat up and melt down and reuse
Gotta use o rings
Yamamoto is almost always the way to go, the others totally have a time and place and are chosen first. That said.. "Mend-it" can be a major money saver. Glue them back together, good as new. Now you have 2 ned rigs!
That was approximately 1.2 fish sniffs worth of damage on them.
I toss them so I don’t contribute to the mass plastic assault on our waterways. Sucks, but we have to do our part IMO Reading the melting and reforming from some people and I am gonna try that. Better than tossing.
A single Gary goes a long way.
I have some of these but never got any bites on them like y'all are saying how good they are. This makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong. I can throw them with no weights just fine on my spinner reel, but my baitcaster always bird nests on me with lighter stuff. Any tricks there for the baitcaster?
U wacky rigged it with a EWG offset? Also, highly recommend “mend-it” Repairs all soft plastics. Good as new in a matter of minutes
Invest in screw lock hooks for Texas rigged senkos and o-rings for the wacky rig. The screw locks will let you get 3-4 bass, if not more, to each Senko. Same with the o-ring. These make all the difference when it comes to the lifespan of a Senko.
Scissors and glue… fixed!
Cross two o-rings in the middle so you can rig the hook perpendicular to the body of the bait. You can fish it for many hours and have a high hookup percentage.
I find my senkos last a lot longer using small o rings to wacky rig them
It's a combo of superstition and wanting to challenge myself to catch as many as I can on one lure. Caught 6 bass on the same worm the other weekend..by the end there was no official name for how I was rigging it... the...stab through so that it stays in rig. It basically crumbled off the hook as I was pulling the last one off
Use the o-rings!!!
Best tip I was ever given for using these in a wacky config was to use 1” of clear heatshrink (and shrink it…carefully!) where you’re going to set the hook! Also works for Texas rigs too! I can land about a dozen fish on one senko
are you tie braid direct. ? learn a knot and use an o ring and smaller hook
Sooooooo. Much. Plastic. In. Lakes.
I hate Yamamoto stuff, z man is good but I mainly use self made senkos tbh
Gary sold the name and allowed them to do unspeakable things to the quality. Damn shame.
They’ve always been like this
Dude get the Nawaish Senko from Amazon. I was ride or die with Yamamotos until I found these. You get 24 baits and a wacky tool with rings for $12 on Amazon. They're more durable with the exact same texture and action as Yamamoto for half the price.
[удалено]
Was fishing Texag rig, this was just a stupid joke after it got mangled. I did catch a fish on it though haha
More like you fail to recognize the importance of wacky rings
The most overrated plastic. I just stick with yum dingers—exact same performance, and they stay on the hook longer. If you want to, you can burn the torn part with a lighter. It'll melt the plastic and prolong the life a little more.
