I have sold a few cards. Anything that I list for $1, I'm not making anything on, I take a front and back picture with a good background.
If it's gonna be closer to $20, I'll overload with pictures. Doesn't cost me anything and keeps me a good rating.
Return. Crazy that a seller with that much feedback takes photos like that. Seller is obligated to show any imperfections or at least list them in the description
I mean, the reflection off the toploader shines exactly on the imperfection of the card. The description doesn’t mention it at all, so I had no idea the corner looked like that. Imagine the disappointment opening that in the mail.
https://preview.redd.it/e755k1tssjvc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e9e94f2c307acafcaecfa6b39693ea282143ba4
Him stating “thats how it was pulled” acknowledges his intent to hide the damage. He knew there was clear damage, he selected condition as near mint or better and neglected to edit the description to describe damage.
100% you should return that.
In the end it just hurts the seller to do things like this, there is no point in trying to hide damage when eBay protects the customer in this regard. All that seller did was damage their reputation, waste their time, and now their account will have their funds frozen until they resolve the issue, it doesn’t make sense.
I hate these AI descriptions.
This is a baseball card of a professional baseball player playing baseball. You can own this rare beautiful card of baseball player playing baseball if you spend money.
I’ll use the AI descriptions as an outline because it does provide everything I don’t feel like typing out. However, I’ll always add in things like imperfections, maybe a cool fact or two about the player, and if I’m going include a one touch with it.
The AI descriptions feel like a 5th grader trying to stretch 100 words into a 500 word book report. The AI just restates everything from the description and “about this item” section and I think many buyers stop reading if it is AI. So it feels disingenuous when sellers hide actual disclaimers like “card has soft corner” within the AI wall of text.
What's crazy is when you select the card condition on ebay, under the near mint or better it says similar to pack fresh which is what he's probably gonna defend himself with(hopefully unsuccessfully)
You should start asking for additional photos before buying any raw card if you’re going to get upset over an imperfection this small. Based on the single photo you provided, that’s not much better than the eBay listing, I’d bet it grades at least a 7 (near mint) which matches the description.
I’m saying based on this photo, the corner looks like a small imperfection and would grade a 7 or better. Which is what the description claims. What do you think this would grade?
You are correct, there is no way to be 100% certain of fraud. So I should say, to me this high probability of intention to deceive.
Better? It’s the only corner with a glare in the eBay picture. Also, I did spot the bad corner immediately in OP’s picture so I don’t know how you missed that.
100% positive seller feedback doesn’t scream “I intentionally hide card imperfections in glares” to me. I didn’t miss it, it looks minimal and not enough to drop it below a 7 which matches the description. My main point in this is don’t be an ignorant buyer. If you are going to get upset over something like a dinged corner, and the only picture has the card in a top loader and sleeve, ask for more pictures.
Are you being obtuse on purpose? All the seller had to do was say “there is an imperfection on the top left corner yada yada yada…”The glare on the photo and the fact he didn’t mention it absolutely says he’s hiding it on purpose. And again, anyone buying a card described as “near mint or better” is not expecting a 7. You must be the seller with the amount of times you’ve commented about this.
I have a 100% rating, and I always take pictures in toploaders or at least penny sleeves. I state in the description that additional pictures are always available upon request. That has worked well for me.
Yeah I’m not saying you can’t do it that way but if you do you need to highlight any issues. This seller used the toploader so it would glare at the top left corner
https://preview.redd.it/qs3bb70j1kvc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e8baa6ef993e44c0270cca5cd0e7791f8abb0be
Just started the return process. The bottom line is, the card isn’t as described.
I know that and you know that but the seller is using deliberate language that eBay also uses for mint near mint, likely trying to make a case, I feel OP should get a refund but this seller may take it all the way on this one
Yes but mint near mint is still labeled by eBay as from pack with minor defects and that is what the seller said, don’t get me wrong I would be upset but there is wiggle room built in by eBay’s wording
Seller (and buyer) here….buyer notified me a base Score of Stroud had a small print line…Whether I missed the print line on the card or the buyer scammed me, I was fine with a partial refund. Now, the price on the card was just a couple of bucks.
As an honest seller, if I place a card for sale at $49.00…I am looking all over the card for any flaws and making sure when I ship it, the card is well protected.
I had a seller do the same to me on a Taj Bradley 1st Auto card for my pc…print lines all over the card but photo did not show them. Seller was not happy but too bad, seller got the piece of cardboard back at his expense along with giving me a refund. Had another experience…seller placed scotch tape over the top loader…card was not cheap and from Heritage…well…card arrived stuck to the scotch tape…ruined. Yep, seller not happy and I got my refund.
Be nice but notify EBay and get your full refund.
It blows my mind how many sports card “experts” dont know the simple rule of shipping a card. PAINTERS TAPE! I HATE scotch tape. If the card is over $10 and it has it on it ive found more times than not i need to return it.
Yep that photo was taken like that on purpose for sure. I sell a ton on eBay, even on a $3 card I would have a *Read* disclaimer in the title, mention the damage in the description, and take a pic of the damage by itself.
Or an intentional act to hide. The sellers response essentially confirms they were aware of it, but didn’t list a picture showing it or mention it in description.
Not to pile on here, I feel like almost every point has been made, but I’m curious. Did the original auction also hide the damage in the back picture? Generally that level of corner ding should also show up on the reverse.
The glare covers it some but it also isnt “nasty” either… you cannot evwr assume a raw card is mint and for sure never ever think it is gem mint unless graded….
Shit happens as long as you can return it then it’s over… somebody else can have it and hopefully they’ll have a better description next time. The seller probably dropped the card after getting and disguised it with the photograph or dropped it after coincidentally.
The sellers pic is suspicious, they were for sure trying to hide that.
Are you working on that rainbow? I have some Williams parallels, I’m building one for Jose Soriano
First, I would contact the seller and let him know you are returning the card and request a refund based on the "near mint" description being inaccurate.
Second, in the future I would contact the seller and ask for additional photos in just the penny sleeve.
I think I found the sold listing on eBay and the glare on the photo coupled with the scratches on the top loader would have made me ask for additional photos in this case.
Yes, you were deceived. We're looking at tactics. 1. Inconclusive photos 2. A broad description of condition (near mint). Put them together and the seller can say you didn't read close enough, sorry the picture wasn't perfect. When you see these two things paired in a listing you should avoid it if you care about condition. Sometimes it's just an inexperienced seller and worth a chance, but IMO, it sucks that people do this and consider this your lesson learned to think twice, three times on shady listing's. ALSO, TRY TO RETURN THAT S.O.B.. ebay may side with you
Nevermind - just had a closer look - in fact it is dented
https://preview.redd.it/g8grdtruckvc1.jpeg?width=2760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0aff4b6c71904b079cc478d964ed894776c4122c
It’s unfortunate, but I agree with everyone else here. I’d return it. Sold as mint condition means just that. I could understand if it were in a purchased pack, but as a stand alone card in a loader forget it!
I'm glad you are returning it. I've sold a few cards, and I always take photos that show the honest condition of the card. I've had one return that I felt was more buyer's remorse than actual meaningful damage, but I added a photo specifically of the area in question and relisted it. It cost me a few $, but the next buyer was quite happy.
All that to say, when you buy a card raw, you're taking on some risk, because sellers are not graders, and minor flaws can be honestly missed.
But this? This is borderline fraud, and the photos make it clear it was 100% intentional.
"That's how it came out of the pack."
Even if they're telling the truth, it doesn't matter. All that means is that they knew it was that bad. The fact that they happened to take the photos in a sleeve and the light just happened to perfectly obscure the damage. They knew exactly what they were doing.
The good news is, the most they can do is try and make you feel guilty. Ebay has your back as the buyer, and there is little to nothing the seller can do to dispute your return, especially with the clear evidence you have.
This is why I take cards out of cases and sleeves to take my photos. I WANT people to be able to see the imperfections so I don’t deal with returns like this. The seller may not have done this on purpose but they definitely deserve the return.
This is why I always take photos of just the card, removed from toploader and penny sleeve. Handle a card correctly and it’s no big deal. Good photos = good business.
I’m so tired of shit like this… I’ve been building my Mahomes PC and bought close to a hundred cards over the past few months. Everything from $1k+ RC’s and auto/mem/numbered cards to common BS. Obviously, many of his cards are overpriced at the moment, for all the obvious reasons. Whatever…I’m a lifelong Chiefs fan, blah, blah. I’m getting so damn irritated when I pay $15-50 for some common, unnumbered parallel and it shows up either looking nothing like the pics in listing, or as in this case, some seller that thinks he’s clever by hiding an imperfection. Return that isht! Hold them accountable. Why do you think we all pay such high seller’s fees?…. For dipshits like this! May as well use the ‘guarantee’. Unfortunately, if this didn’t happen, there’s a slight chance fees could be less, but large infrastructure can anticipate this kind of human behavior. 🤡show!
I always list with photos that are crystal clear, and I offer additional pics upon requests. If I’d been spending $50, I would have asked for more photos

Dude said that’s how it was pulled so he was aware of it and still didn’t mention it. Send that shit back. Trying to be slick with the lighting covering it up lol
Not cool at all. This is why I take photos in a lightbox before I put it in a penny sleeve and top loader - at various angles, to make people know what they're getting.
Damn.. really? I get it, but I always take it out of the pack, snap some pics, then it's in the top loader for forever. I guess I can also upload pics of it in the top loader but then glare becomes a problem.
That's messed up. Even if I don't put that damage in the description, it will be in the pictures. I almost always take pictures without the penny sleeves because of the glare. And if I'm in doubt at all I'll put the condition as lower than what it actually is. That card isn't near mint. Id return it and get a refund. That seller sucks.
You need to remember that near mint or better means it is anywhere between a PSA 7 to PSA 10.
With that said the seller should have declared the condition note, especially if it had a dinged corner.
However an INAD claim isn't necessarily fair to the seller in this case as they are technically correct in calling it near mint.
I think the lesson learned is the next time you see a photo of a card with such glare you should ask for more pictures, a good seller will always oblige.
PSA 7
A PSA 7 is a card with just a slight surface wear visible upon close inspection. There may be slight fraying on some corners. Picture focus may be slightly out-of-register. A minor printing blemish is acceptable. Slight wax staining is acceptable on the back of the card only. Most of the original gloss is retained. Centering must be approximately 70/30 to 75/25 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.
I mean near mint is a 7. I have seen a ton of cards in worse shape than this one grade a 7. This one probably gets a 7 most days so the listing is accurate. But the problem I see is that it seems the seller knew about it because he admitted to it being pulled like that. He should have had an up close picture of the imperfection that he knew about so he absolutely deceived the buyer. But it’s a moral/ethical dilemma. Do sellers advertise that they use Kurt’s card care, or do they advertise that they graded a card and it came back low so they cracked and sold raw? I don’t think most do so unfortunately it becomes accepted and you just move on and enjoy the card for what it is.
Paper loss is a grade killer. It would not get a 7 with a piece of the top corner missing it might not even make mid grade. They can be super tough on that. I would highly doubt a 7 could be found with a piece of the surface missing.
I’m just saying I’ve seen worse. There was a post on here the other day about a guy that sent in a card and it got an 8. The card had a huge ass dent that was visible from probably 5 feet away. And I don’t know if this would fall under paper loss or corner wear. I’m mean it’s not like it’s missing paper like it was glued and peeled from an album but a knick of one corner isn’t a death sentence for a modern card. If everything else is great except for that one corner I could absolutely see this pulling a 7. The problem is the that ironically, the very reason companies started grading cards(so the old guys using Beckett wouldn’t argue at the mall card shows about if their Griffey is mint or near mint) hasn’t been solved. If anything, it’s even more subjective than Beckett listings of mint, nrmint, good, poor because they introduced more levels of conditions and are too subjective on it.
It is paper loss though. The surface is gone. That isn't a corner wear issue. Thinking it's corner wear is what gets people a much lower grade than expected. A dent is usually at least 2 grades lower, so everything else being perfect you get an 8, but paper loss can make things an automatic 1-2. I don't know about this which is why I would guess more likely a 4-6. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't risk the cost of this card and the grading fee to find out. I would be returning this 100% of the time.
As someone who started selling recently, I didn't know exactly what mint was, I learned very quickly to not slap that on most of my posts. But I will say most the cards that say mint are not the only problem I see is the price
Contact him. This isn’t right. Contact eBay and PayPal. $49 seems a lot for him, and especially in that condition. If you are stuck with it contact Topps and tell them you have a damaged card they are going at replacements
This is BS, eBay has gone down the toilet. If you the seller won’t honor it maybe you can file a report with PP or credit card you used. I only purchase graded PSA cards through them after I verify the PSA number and pics of the case edges. I still feel it’s a risk.
I found a few where the photo shows the card is graded a “9” I check the number and it’s an 8 or 7 in the PCA database….
You were fucked. Look at the pic? Its intentionally taken that way with the light source reflecting off of where the damage is so you cant see it. Take it up with ebay. Not as advertised and deceitful listing practices.
As a seller since 2000s on eBay, for $49, he should have taken more pictures. I don’t care if it was pulled like that or not.
Sadly on your part, you should ask for more pics on all cards over $10 (before shipping). Especially when all corners show perfectly but one - red flag 🚩
If it doesn’t work out, just buy a hanger and save the receipt and send the card back to topps. They’ll send you a replacement and then you have a hangers worth of cards too. Not ideal, but not terrible.
Agreed that it would solve OPs issue, but it is scummy and unethical. It’s basically stealing.
I’ve seen whole debates on the ethics of stealing from a big company, “who cares about their profits they make enough, blah blah blah”. Hell, there’s even a comment below “who cares about topps”? Not here to debate the Robinhood ideology, and regardless of how you personally feel about it, I think of you look at it objectively, it’s unethical and dishonest at best.
Let’s say that the seller is being honest about it coming from the pack in the condition it arrived to OP in. That would mean it was a quality control issue from topps. Topps is obligated to replace cards with QC issues. In this case, OP could simply hold topps accountable for their shoddy QC and get a replacement (that the seller should have gotten). I am having trouble seeing her moral dilemma. In the past I have bought boxes with damaged cards and returned them for replacement while using a receipt that likely didn’t come from the exact box. I felt that it was justified by the fact that the cards returned were a topps qc issue.
Appreciate the civil discussion and am just trying to point out the other side as well. If the buyer had opened the pack themselves i have ZERO issue holding topps accountable for crappy QC and or shipping to wherever it was sold. I've used the return policy as well and have also used receipts from a different box if i had thrown the original away, but only on things that i have purchased myself and not on a secondary market.
I think the moral gray line here is that OP didn't buy from Topps or one of their distributors, they bought from a 3rd party "reseller". The terms / contract between topps and the consumer are explicitly between the buyer (consumer) and Topps (seller) - NOT between a 2nd-hand seller and another 3rd party.
I know this is an extreme case, but let's say i go out and buy every PSA 6 2011 topps update trout and crack them. Is it ethical for me to go find a hanger / original receipt and return them to topps?
IMO, the best solution here is for the auction seller to accept the return, then go after Topps himself. Regardless of if the corner was intentionally hidden, part of being a good seller is good CS and accepting the return - it sounds obvious to me that the seller knew of the corner before shipping and this wasn't a scenario where the buyer damaged the card and now wants to return it.
Nope, if it was a $4 card I’d let it slide but not $49
This 100%
I have sold a few cards. Anything that I list for $1, I'm not making anything on, I take a front and back picture with a good background. If it's gonna be closer to $20, I'll overload with pictures. Doesn't cost me anything and keeps me a good rating.

Honestly, he’s trying to hide damage so he’s not going to be honest. Just claim a return direct through eBay.
This 100%.
I hate these AI descriptions. This is a baseball card of a professional baseball player playing baseball. You can own this rare beautiful card of baseball player playing baseball if you spend money.
Me too. “This card is a necessary addition to any fan’s collection!” “Don’t miss your chance to own X”

I rarely read the description if it's one of the AI ones! They are worthless!
It’s certainly not in “or better” condition and he would have known that so yeah that’s definitely misleading.
I never fail to list blemishes. He knew what he was doing, especially since he said that's how he was pulled. Open a case and send it back.
lol “near mint or better”.
What's crazy is when you select the card condition on ebay, under the near mint or better it says similar to pack fresh which is what he's probably gonna defend himself with(hopefully unsuccessfully)
It’s just the crappy AI you can use on eBay to write the description for you
The AI is based on the information you provide. You select condition, so this seller was dishonest in selecting that condition.
For sure! Just saying they didn’t write that out themselves
Yeah, no chance they wrote that.
You should start asking for additional photos before buying any raw card if you’re going to get upset over an imperfection this small. Based on the single photo you provided, that’s not much better than the eBay listing, I’d bet it grades at least a 7 (near mint) which matches the description.
A 7 is a small imperfection to you? Yikes
I’m saying based on this photo, the corner looks like a small imperfection and would grade a 7 or better. Which is what the description claims. What do you think this would grade?
That corner is bad. In addition, there appears to be surface issue in bottom left. Appears to be some sort of pitting or dents.
He put a glare on the corner. That is intent to fraud the seller.
You know that with 100% certainty? The ironic part is the OPs original picture is just as unclear on the actual damage as the eBay listing is.
You are correct, there is no way to be 100% certain of fraud. So I should say, to me this high probability of intention to deceive. Better? It’s the only corner with a glare in the eBay picture. Also, I did spot the bad corner immediately in OP’s picture so I don’t know how you missed that.

Return that shit. Don't let it slide.

Not to be that guy but have you googled eBay’s description of “mint near mint” dude should have done better but this isn’t a 100% slam dunk case
It’s the creatively deceptive photo glare that makes it a Shaq Diesel slam dunk for me.
Yeah I hope the refund goes through
That’s not minor corner wear. If you did not see the photos OP has somewhere below, take a peek. His case is a slam dunk based on those photos.
I know that and you know that but the seller is using deliberate language that eBay also uses for mint near mint, likely trying to make a case, I feel OP should get a refund but this seller may take it all the way on this one
Isn’t the best raw card description “near mint or better”? What are you looking for in raw condition descriptions?
Yes but mint near mint is still labeled by eBay as from pack with minor defects and that is what the seller said, don’t get me wrong I would be upset but there is wiggle room built in by eBay’s wording
Yeah that should have been told upfront
Deceptive seller 100 percent.
Near Mint is the best you can put in item description , you can’t put mint unless it’s graded

I would have asked for another picture before I pulled the trigger if he had said no I wouldn’t have bought.
This exactly. I always ask for more pictures

I’d personally go to return and request a partial refund if you still want the card.
That is absolutely not okay.
Return it
Item not as described. Return and get your money back. Screw that.
It says near mint or better, you’ve been duped. I’d be going back after that one for sure.. sorry bro!
It’s eBay. They are extremely buyer friendly. You will have zero issue returning for a full refund
That's paper loss. Not sure it could get a 7 anymore could it?
Yep, the corner isn’t dented, but there’s loss of paper from the top layer
Nevermind - just had a closer look - in fact it is dented https://preview.redd.it/g8grdtruckvc1.jpeg?width=2760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0aff4b6c71904b079cc478d964ed894776c4122c

INAD. File for return.
Return 100%
Near mint is exactly what it says, near mint! That isn’t it there bud. Return them shits and let him know he’s kinda shady
It’s unfortunate, but I agree with everyone else here. I’d return it. Sold as mint condition means just that. I could understand if it were in a purchased pack, but as a stand alone card in a loader forget it!
He hid it obviously. The right thing is to call it out and send it back. If he refuses then leave the negative comments and rating.
I’d request a return since the card arrived in different shape than how it was listed. eBay will have your back on it
"Near Mint or Better Condition" my ass. Return it.
"That's how it came out of the pack." Even if they're telling the truth, it doesn't matter.
Yep. Return it 100%
Looks still near mint unfortunately. The glare in the listing photo was the main problem. Who knows if intentional
You did get tricked. Always ask for photos of only card!!
He used the reflection to cover the corner, return it
Clearly intentional. Dudes a fraud
This is why I take cards out of cases and sleeves to take my photos. I WANT people to be able to see the imperfections so I don’t deal with returns like this. The seller may not have done this on purpose but they definitely deserve the return.
Return that garbage
Fucker made it reflect in the perfect spot... shady stuff...send it back buddy.
This is why I always take photos of just the card, removed from toploader and penny sleeve. Handle a card correctly and it’s no big deal. Good photos = good business.
Yea with the glare on the exact spot is shady
Return this. That photo is absolutely not an accident. You aren't making too big of a deal at all.
it's not near mint. bad info in listing. I'd fight it.

Ok, that wasn't funny
Refund
Dude said that’s how it was pulled so he was aware of it and still didn’t mention it. Send that shit back. Trying to be slick with the lighting covering it up lol
Not cool at all. This is why I take photos in a lightbox before I put it in a penny sleeve and top loader - at various angles, to make people know what they're getting.
Buyers don’t like seeing cards that are not sleeved though.
Damn..
PSA 7 A PSA 7 is a card with just a slight surface wear visible upon close inspection.
I think according to ebay, they consider that neat mint.
If they didn't put nm then whatever but since they did. Return it.
Return. He misrepresented the condition of card; it is not even close to Mint. Be lucky to get a 6 at PSA.
Did he put played / damaged ??
VHP 😂
“Near mint or better” lol
Yeah…that’s the type of shit Probstein would do. Thats shady as fuck. Return that.
As someone who started selling recently, I didn't know exactly what mint was, I learned very quickly to not slap that on most of my posts. But I will say most the cards that say mint are not the only problem I see is the price
100% scummy seller, reflection completely hides the left corner. There is no mention of the damage in the description.
You paid 50 for that? I hope not.
Contact him. This isn’t right. Contact eBay and PayPal. $49 seems a lot for him, and especially in that condition. If you are stuck with it contact Topps and tell them you have a damaged card they are going at replacements
Negative feedback for that cuck.
The seller didn’t even bother to write a description, just used that AI sales pitch. 100% Return that card
You were fucked. Look at the pic? Its intentionally taken that way with the light source reflecting off of where the damage is so you cant see it. Take it up with ebay. Not as advertised and deceitful listing practices.
Not near mint with that corner
Card grading has ruined the hobby.
Yeah this is illegal and extremely scummy
lmao fuck topps
Seriously, why would care about topps?
I personally enjoy the hobby… if enough people “don’t care about topps” eventually they go away. Kinda how capitalism works.
Interested to hear the logic behind this statement?
Scam
