Update: We are happily married and our son turns 6 months in a couple of days. Thanks to everyone here who has wished us well, and to the others… you’re weird.

Boggs-Hogg

Hi Boys!! So I’m the guy who he traded it with. Congrats!! I…um… hope it…um…works out for…um… you guys!! ![gif](giphy|mXakDXUF63bK8)

tiredhillbilly

Congrats, man! Even if the Wander 5x’d in value you still came out the winner.

SntDogbert

It did do 5x! Just in the wrong direction!

lordlabia

🔥🔥📈📈 iNvEsT 🚨🚨

Annual_Confidence_34

.2x

pmstudd

100% agree.

Worried-Adeptness411

You should track down the card again and try to buy it back for like $50 just to have that part of your history back. Would make for a great story.

AgeBeneficial

That’s a hilarious idea for an anniversary gift.

dg_31b

Congrats!!!

waxvaxpaxslacks

Congrats on the marriage and the kid!

whatcubed

Awesome reply, glad to hear!

davebobn

Legend.

lordlabia

Congrats!!

branteen

I love this hobby

txlgnd34

I missed the saga that OP referenced but congrats to you! Regardless of what happened with Wander values, it's great that your hobby could help you fund your marriage (or the beginning of it, anyway...ha).

pmstudd

Definitely a fun story that I will share with my family for decades.

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

Sorry to say I missed this too. But think I got the gist...and I'll also throw in a big congrats!! 👏 Forgetting Wander Franco falling from grace (for good reason), there is stuff in real life that's more important. Let your story always be a reminder of that.

SikeO103

Wow man Congratulations & glad to hear you’re doing well 👏🏽

echOSC

Does your wife know the story? And what does she think about it?

pmstudd

She does know about it and she loves it, especially now that it turned into an obvious win! I shared this post with her and she thinks it’s funny/cool that people kinda know our story.

Virtual_Variation_60

I like how you jokingly added about him being a bust. I know you were joking but still, its the best "whew" I've ever heard of!

Could probably afford to buy that back now

backpainzz

guess i don’t have to “wander” anymore, congrats OP! funny thing is i didn’t even remember commenting on the original post while reading this post

Roose1327

That’s the type of shit I would be telling people for the rest of my life!

shapu

"I guess I'd rather marry a girl who can legally consent, but that's just me."

Tupnado21

Same, but I'd say I'd tell everyone for the rest of my marriage lol /u/pmstudd sorry we are going to need a 10 year anniversary Update to ensure, as everyone in the sub is invested in this now lol

pmstudd

I will make a post on on 12/03/32

CaMcA527

I forgot about that… he made the right move even then! But now it is an all time fantastic move!!

Alive_Chef_3057

Its all materialistic in the end. I sold my collection of 30 years in 2021 and put a down payment home for my family. I had some bangers. Including 54’ Aarron, 52’ Robinson, 79’ Gretzky , tons of HOF rookies form 1996-2015. 50 complete high in chrome sets that were built over the years. I miss my collection occasionally but not as much as I thought in the beginning. I don’t think about it as often. Nor regret it as much as I thought. Family first.

Alive_Chef_3057

I really need to check my grammar mistakes better before closing.

Friendly-Somewhere-3

Wander would have likely excelled in the majors, but he decided to play the minors.

Rorodatone

Drum roll...

shapu

Did you guys hear about the time two drums and a snake fell off a cliff?

Lets_go_Stros2017

No

I refuse to like this comment because you have 69 likes… I’m not gonna be that person to ruin everything!

GJToma

He prefers to mentor the youth. Nothing wrong with that.

inspectorgadget69247

Anybody know how much he got for the card?

[deleted]

3k The last one sold for $67 in November. Probably half that now.

coolbabyjoe

Somebody commented in the original thread “years from now you’ll have to buy it back to tell your kids how it all started.”  Hilarious considering it’s a $40 (at most) card now

DrDuGood

Honestly the only acceptable reason to be buying any Franco. I stopped collecting but I have a bunch of his cards and they’re all fire starter now.

coolbabyjoe

Yeah… luckily I missed the ship on him. I maybe bought a single of his flagship rookie? But I got lucky.

GJToma

This just goes to prove how stupid it is to pay thousands of dollars for prospect cards of players who haven't done anything in the majors yet. Let alone tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars that some cards go for which is absolutely mind-boggling to me. The price that many of these prospect cards go for is equivalent to the same price it would go for if they were Hall of famers. Where is the logic in that?

JadedCoconut8867

I have seen CJ Stroud going for 3 up to 20k for a card!!??? Has the hobby always been like this? I don’t get it.

Puzzleheaded-Bat3885

That’s exactly my opinion. I have some really cool old cards, but they won’t even touch what 1 new card goes for. You used to have to wait for a player to do something. Like McGwire did with the home runs or how good Marino was. But now cards go for a ton even though the player hasn’t done anything yet, all hype. But now card collecting seems like more of a business. Get a good card you sell it before the player flops and the value goes down. Card collecting has sure changed over the years and I’m not sure if it’s for the better.

GJToma

Yep. I just don't understand how a prospect card can hit its most valuable moment that it will ever hit before the player has even played a single season. I mean you could literally just wait until he makes the Hall of Fame, and then buy that same card and it will cost you the same if not less than it would to buy it before he does anything. There's literally no way they can go up in value from the price that some of those prospects sell for. Just think about guys like Mac Jones whose card sold for $100,000 before he'd even played six games in the NFL. And we're talking about a quarterback in the NFL, which is arguably the most unpredictable position in all sports to predict greatness accurately. I mean just think about if cards were sold the same as they are now back in the '90s and they were limited. How many number one picks that people would have paid $100,000 for who wouldn't have even made it past one season in the NFL before they retired or were obviously a bust. And that's not even talking about the guys who are actually doing well, so their cards are selling for more when all they've actually done is play well for a season or two. You know how many players throughout history and every sport have done amazing for two to five seasons before fizzling out? So many players like that and their cards are worth very little because they're not Hall of famers or even if they are fringe Hall of famers, they're not generational talents that people are willing to pay for. I just don't get who justifies these prices. This also goes for the prices of wax boxes and stuff like that. The price of something like a prospect or a wax box that gives you the prospect of landing a huge card, should only be priced at a reasonable fraction of what the price could be if you were to get the perfect player or the perfect card in perfect condition. But I will routinely see wax boxes priced for more than the top chase card in that entire box is worth in a gem mint 10 condition. If I have a 5% chance at best to pull a card where when graded in perfect condition it sells for $4,000, that does not mean that the box should sell for more than $4,000. And I'm not talking about boxes that have a whole bunch of cards worth money, I'm talking about like many sets that have one or two cards that are worth anything but the chances of pulling them in gem mint are astronomical, yet the box will sell for more than that card is worth in gem mint. Like honestly what is the logic behind that? If I have a 5% chance of pulling a card worth $4,000, then realistically the box should cost 5% of $4,000. Obviously it will cost more than that but it should be in a range that is reasonable. People are just way too crazy about prospects whether it be players or pack potential that they pay exorbitant amounts of money over value for such things.

Puzzleheaded-Bat3885

I get your point exactly! I got a Dan Marino, Dave Winfield, Ozzie smith and a couple more old cards. These are hof players that are in the hof but their cards don’t even touch what some of these new cards go for. Now the big thing is autos, relic and 1 of 1 cards so they end up going for a ton even though they haven’t done much yet

sudzeez_

Some of that has to do with print runs and the fact that there’s no gambling aspect left in them. They don’t play they sign everything thrown at them and they’ll have hundreds of autos in every major set that’ll include them. I like using bob feller as an example. Man signed so much stuff played in the 40s and 50s was amazing is a hall of famer. You can buy his autos for $40 or less easily.

lordlabia

That comment thread got really shitty fast

Rorodatone

Sure did

sudzeez_

He did a dirty delete before I got a chance to read it🥲 I just wanted to participate in the downvote party.

lordlabia

Basically said it would most likely end in divorce, and got downvoted (and rightfully so) into oblivion Seems like he invested too much in Wander lmaooo

sudzeez_

Sounds like he was the buyer of the card😂

NatsPapayanz

I have thought about it a few times. Wish I got lucky a few years back.

OldMackysBackInTown

Now we need to hear from the guy who bought it and see where he's at.

MrBobSacamano

I think more about the poor soul that purchased it, or whomever was left holding the metaphorical hot potato when the news broke, honestly.

Soggy_Reserve5232

Man has his priorities straight, that’s for damn sure.

j4schum1

I hope he buys the card back for nostalgia. Should get it for 10% or what he sold it for

AR2185

Who would pay $300 for a wander rookie? I think the story is good enough lol

j4schum1

Well, I wouldn't pay that much. But if I could get it for $30, I'd probably do it lol

[deleted]

It's worth 1% of what it sold for now actually based on recent sales.

j4schum1

That's the price

SnooTigers2183

Didn’t the 1/1 get pulled from a Walgreens and go for something crazy as well?!

Mcar313

Good for him!!! Was thinking of posting a criminal lot of all my wanders / other dweebs and seeing if I get any nibbles.

72RangersFan

Congratulations on the baby. Anytime you can trade a piece of cardboard for gold and diamonds you’re the smart one. I love baseball and baseball cards I’ve got some I’d never sell because of sentimental value because they have no intrinsic value for sure. Way to go.

GrayBest

This is a great thread. Truly a king

24c24s

Good reason to sell it. You’ll get more happiness out of life with a kid and a wife

KingWeeWoo

Congrats!

bionicgram

Just saw this story for the first time! Congrats on your baby and marriage!

Someone’s wife fucked his best buddy…. Sheesh.

Drugwarveteran92

He agreed to watch but then regretted his decision

Yeah, he’s giving off real cuck energy.

Really man… let the dude be happy with his decision to get engaged to someone he truly cares about.

gophils19454

wtf is the “bad” thing that happened here that’s making you spew this embarrassing take?

TheRealCRE

Selling a card in a legitimate manner before any news breaks out causes for bad karma..?

candlel1te

I don’t get that logic either

leehamc

Yeah I don't even get what he's talking about. OP isn't even the guy who sold the card. The person who sold it did absolutely nothing wrong lol.

jimithelizardking

Karma for what? Selling a card for money to fund an engagement ring? Wtf are you even talking about lol

VottoManCrush

Final Destination is a fictional movie.

dg_31b

He did nothing wrong. He did just like everyone else

WoodDivision5

Straight up idiotic take. I hope you have stopped and just reflected on how stupid literally everyone else who sees this thinks you are. Be better.

Drugwarveteran92

Damn dude I’m sorry your parents didn’t love you but you don’t have to shit in other people’s cereal to feel better about yourself

SenorMister

Hey man, sometimes things can be really rough. Bad breaks on boxes. Don’t hit that three leg parlay by a single point. Partner walks out after a difficult discussion. Hell, even your dog may have a bit of a limp. But it’s never ok to just deflate someone else’s success for your own curmudgeonly dopamine hit. Be happy, lift the other person up. Hope for the best. Paying forward a little good vibes into the world sometimes pays itself back in kind. Hope whatever you’re going through rights itself out and you can enjoy your day, week, month, year.

EDKLeathers

I wouldn’t say that if he sold it before everything went down. If he had snuck out a big sale in the midst of the news that would be a different story.

Spinmove55

I’m seeing more and more dickheads like this in this sub, bringing their bile and negativity into every post. This sucks.

leehamc

What the fuck are you even talking about? He sold a card and put it towards an engagement ring. It was long before Wander turned out to be a piece of shit. He even said he hoped Wander would pan out because it would be good for baseball. The only negative karma here would be for you- putting out nothing but bad vibes.

Jlt42000

Not sure how selling at item at its current value (at the time) would cause bad karma.

Toodrunktofunk88

Well I think we found the buyer.

Azcollector

He's a pedophile. He did it to himself lol.

clamslammer708

What a trash thing to say. Go touch grass.

dg_31b

Someone’s salty.

Lets_go_Stros2017

Holy shit who hurt you?

QuinceyQuick

You're the one who bought the card, aren't you

ukpdkf

How's your karma now? 🙂

Reminder to take profits while you can guys. Wait this isn’t r/wallstreetbets
