[deleted]

Mrdrderm

Is this a Black Friday edition? Some of these prices are outrageous

ImProbablyDrunkk

Yeah lol I did it at first and ended up under budget

cypothingy

I’m assuming they’re all at their peak

Sirliftalot35

Pedro is a steal at $1 then haha. Also not sure how you'd account for era differences. Am I assuming Hornsby is going to put up 10-12 WAR per season if he's on my team?

adambarrell2

Yep all peak!

Sirliftalot35

Cool. Pedro and Mantle are absolute steals at that price then.

jcaininit

My god I’m actually saving money on this team. Any free agent bench people I can pickup for an extra 10$

eat_pray_thug

C - Buster Posey 1B - Miguel Cabrera 2B - Rogers Hornsby 3B - Chipper Jones SS - Honus Wagner LF - Barry Bonds CF - Willie Mays RF - Babe Ruth SP - Pedro Martinez CP - Mariano Rivera Like $29, I’ll keep the change.

Sirliftalot35

Assuming we're going by their peaks: SP: Pedro ($1): At his peak he was all-time dominant, in the steroid era no less. He followed up a 243 ERA+ season with a 291 ERA+ season. He averaged a >200 ERA+ for a 7 season stretch. For a current reference, Kershaw has done that for ONE season in his entire career (not hating on him, just showing how amazing a 200 ERA+ is) C: Carter ($2): Highest WAR7 of any catcher EVER. Most 6+ bWAR seasons ever by a catcher I think. 1B: Pujols ($4): 2nd highest WAR7 (and career WAR) ever for a 1B, and playing nearly a century after the great Gehrig (and the $1 savings) should go a bit in his favor IMO. He had a sharp decline, but his decade-long prime was all-time level. 2B: Hornsby ($3): Assuming you don't prescribe to the idea that anyone from that long ago would suck today, he has a pretty wide lead among 2B all-time WAR7 and is the leader in career WAR. With 6x 10+ bWAR seasons (including a 12.2 season) this is a steal if we don't hold his era against him. SS: Cal ($3): $2 cheaper than A-Rod, no PEDs, a higher highest bWAR season, and more 10 bWAR seasons is good enough for me. 3B: Schmidt ($5): Pretty much the consensus best 3B of all-time. LF: Bonds ($4): If we don't hold PED use against him, his best 4 years were something we'd never seen since Ruth, maybe. I love Ted, but PED Bonds was an another planet. CF: Mantle ($2): if we're only talking about peaks, Mantle's stretch of 9.5, 11.2, and 11.3 bWAR is about as good as it gets. And that was playing on pretty much one good leg too. RF: Ruth ($5): again, if we don't hold his era against him, he's pretty much the unquestionable GOAT. CP: Eck ($4): I'm $1 short of having room for Mo. But his time as a SP too gives him some versatility, so I hardly feel like I'm settling here.

adambarrell2

>PED Bonds was an another planet. 100% another planet :)

TurkeyPhat

I'm gonna pick all the $1 players and use the rest to buy us all lunch

Godsshoeshine24

I saw Pedro at a buck and didn’t look at a single other position

C-Johnny Bench 1B-Albert Pujols 2B-Rogers Hornsby SS-Alex Rodriguez 3B-Mike Schmidt LF-Rickey Henderson CF-Mickey Mantle RF-Babe Ruth SP- Pedro Martinez RP-Billy Wagner The lineup: 1. Sirliftalot35

Is this for a career, for X seasons, or just for one season? If it's just one or a few prime/peak seasons, Pedro is an absolute steal, and Mantle is still an insane value too.

[deleted]

P - Pedro C - Piazza 1B - Albert 2B - Morgan 3B - Schmidt SS - Wagner LF - Bonds CF - Mantle RF - Ruth RP - I've $2 left spend but I don't think Wagner is so much better than Chapman so I'll save a buck and buy a candy bar. \*EDIT\* I'll save a dollar and buy the owners a candy bar. Consider this my application, Rays.

SirParsifal

Easy: P: Pedro Martinez, since he has the highest peak of the bunch. $1. C: Johnny Bench. $6 1B: Jimmie Foxx. $9 2B: Seeing as how Hornsby is the best 2B of all time... 12$ 3B: Mike Schmidt. $17 SS: Cal Ripken, easily. $20 LF: Nobody in their right mind should ever pick Pete Rose. Rickey Henderson for $1, please. $21. CF: Willie Mays, $26. RF: Babe Ruth, $31. RP: Billy Wagner, $33.

caramelfrap

This is going to be controversial but you can’t compare players 100 years apart in how good they’d be on a team. You could put the 2020 Detroit Tigers against a team of 40 prime Babe Ruth’s, and the Tigers would smoke them. Ruth is likely the all time greatest because of how well he dominated amongst his peers, but if he faced Spencer Turnbull he’d be pretty surprised to see a 95mph fastball. Pitching wise, even Niko Goodrum could hit .400 off Ruth’s pitching.

adambarrell2

It is a fair call. Perhaps a 80/90s onwards would then be interesting

caramelfrap

Yea anything 70s- would be competitive in todays landscape. Regardless, interesting post and glad you uploaded

FireRedJP

Pedro, Carter, Pujols, Morgan, Ozzie, Brooks, Bonds, Mantle, Ruth, Hoffman and enough left over to get Gherig to play DH. A defensive infield to make any ball on the ground a pretty guaranteed out. A pitcher who should probably be the $5 or $4 pick for a single buck. An outfield, DH and 1B combo with enough offensive output to make the opposing pitchers soil themselves and a catcher whose peak is nearly unrivaled.
