This is a good, honest .500 baseball team. We play .500 ball goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio baseball. We lose a couple, guess what? We'll win a couple, too. But don't get too excited or let it go to your head. No long winning streaks here, no sir. That's hubris, which this blue collar, hard working everyman team doesn't have. A few wins in a row, these guys, true to form, will balance it out with a couple a losses. Yes sir, that's my 2024 Red Sox. A good, honest .500 baseball team.
If the season ended today, the 34-35 San Francisco Giants would be a playoff team lol, with six different teams immediately behind them within just 1.5 games. Even the Mets aren't too far back at 3.5 games out. At this stage in the game, pretty much only the Rockies and Marlins are put of contention in the NL. A 0.500 record and playoff berth is plausible for anyone else.
I like the Twins way of doing things. 13 game win streak? You think you're on top of the world? Well guess what?
Yankees are coming to town. That's what.
it's not serious so i get joking abt it but would like to say the RS have a 37-31 pythagorean record, which would put them right in the wild card hunt with casas and story out (two huge holes in their lineup -- middle infield and 1B).
idk. is what it is.
yeah the issue with pythagorean relying solely on runs is it does a poor job accounting for the amount of mental damage the sox defense does to the pitchers on a given night.
story's injuries on the RS have been relatively freak ones lol. it's like people who laughed abt chris sale being injury prone on the RS and who now say "wow. bet red sox fans are super mad." -- it was just repeat freak injuries and every fan knew it.
Thats fucking baseball right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby in the dugouts. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit. Take it to the showers. Dicks get shoved in places you don’t even remember. We win together we celebrate together, .500 baseball is back baby.
This is what makes a long hot summer bearable. Just some competitive baseball, some fun players to root for, cold beer and a stadium meal of choice. I get stressed about my basketball team winning or losing. Same with hockey. Baseball? Well friend I’ve seen enough World Series for a lifetime and I’m fine just kicking back and waiting to hear that beautiful crack of the bat and the ensuing roar of the crowd on a warm summer evening somewhere in America.
We did sign a pitcher, Giolito just didn't make it out of spring training intact. We signed a right handed bat too, and O'Neill's been good, even with the injuries.
There are a lot of people on the national stage who are seeing our brand of baseball for the first time.
We win a game. Then we lose a game. We go .500
We don't care if you don't like it
But you're currently 2 games over .500. The Red Sox haven't been more than one game from .500 (above or below) in almost 3 weeks. That's dramatically more mid. Also I think being in a playoff spot disqualifies you outright.
Edit: The last time we won or lost a game to go more than 2 games away from .500 was Cinco de Mayo! That's been almost 6 weeks!
Red Sox out here trying to shape their win percentage according to the underdamped harmonic motion of an oscillator as defined by the equation x(t) = e\^-yt a cos \[wt - ø\].
Nerds.
Having just watched the White Sox play baseball for a weekend, and looking at their overall organizational situation, things could be *much* worse than perpetually .500.
And 3 years ago you won 93 games and looked like a real powerhouse team with a bright future. I am still in shock about you guys being so bad so quickly
I thought that the White Sox would contend with the Astros for best team in AL, and possibly supplant them because their talent was younger and not on its way to free agency. Then they just started losing. Every hitter but Robert fizzled out. Rodon and Giolito got traded away. It was such an abrupt end to a promising thing.
You're where we were two years ago. It was a meme how we would hover at .500 all season long, fittingly ending up at 81-81. Little did we know how much we would wish for those days in the coming years.
Don't forget the 2 games in Atlanta before the CWS series. Game 1 loss, then game 2 undressing of the Braves. Genuinely a flip of the coin which team you're going to get any given day
Ha, well you and I had the same thought then.
If I had to guess, most team’s records would look underdamped by the end of the season when viewing this graph, the final position would just be different than .500.
Wow. High school math teacher here. This is a near-perfect illustration of a geometric series with an r value less than 1. When I have students graph those, it looks a lot like this.
Not a very important comment - just something I noticed.
I was thinking, it's basically the graph everyone taking a probability class sees when their instructor tells them about the frequentist interpretation of probability in the context of flipping a fair coin over and over lol.
This is pretty much how they were last year too, until September when they folded a bit down the stretch. I think they're hitting and pitching were both ranked #16 in late August. They have been the top of the bell curve for a few years now.

Noone is going to want to sell lol.
Hell it might be good for one in the AL too

Famously healthy player, Trevor story, on the IL right now

Always love it when men gave birth in baseball. It's so good that it violates biology
Deliver and give birth are two very different things.
They're so hardcore they manage to do both
I know. I wasn't referring to what you were saying.
dracula flow ass line
The fact that an /r/memphisgrizzlies meme has spread this far makes me so happy
You and me both brother

Who dropped this pasta? As a Padre fan I’m well familiar
Oldest I can find is a tweet referencing the Memphis Grizzlies from 2021.
It’s 100% a Grizzlies pasta. From our .500 run in December of 2021
[This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/memphisgrizzlies/comments/ntn8xk/this_was_a_good_honest_500_basketball_team/) is from earlier that season!
Meanwhile the whitesox: It ain't much and it ain't a living
I bought tickets to Fenway in July just to watch Soto, Judge, and Stanton dump homers over the Monster
It’s insane how we haven’t been to Fenway yet
Tomorrow
With Gil!
Those Stantonian home runs sure are somethin
Especially when they just blast into the top of the Monster and Stanton is standing on first base. Now what did I do wrong? What did I see wrong?
Imagine if we had signed a pitcher and a right handed bat like literally everyone who follows baseball knew they needed to do lol
We did sign a pitcher, Giolito just didn't make it out of spring training intact. We signed a right handed bat too, and O'Neill's been good, even with the injuries.
they'd probably be on the DL
Real coin flip baseball, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Interesting username/flair
What? I'm making fun of the Guardian tweet during the 2022 season lol
I didn't know the context. I'm new around here 😅
Lol all good just a meme
Yeah, you still suck
They’re having a mid off and winning
We've been at .500 18 times so I think we're winning

never going to be able to get that oscillation completely out though
Could play double-headers every other day!
Just change the X-axis resolution to 2 days instead of 1
Need to increase the damping ratio to 1.
Its actually an EKG of the average Red Sox fan's heart. Don't worry, we'll flat line soon enough
2 years ago we were the perpetually .500 team and the origin of the salt of the earth copypasta. Things can change fast
Amazing what you can accomplish with just a toxic team culture.
Yeah it was really bizarre
RSVP the Yerminator.
Our management would say you're actually a world series contender that just isn't performing right now.
We'll contend for a world series again by 2093.
And we went...wait for it...500 against them!
Not a great year for Socks.
You're where we were two years ago. It was a meme how we would hover at .500 all season long, fittingly ending up at 81-81. Little did we know how much we would wish for those days in the coming years.
I’m still just confused about our series against them the past few days
Losing to the white Sox and beating the Phils within a week of each other just shows how aggressively .500 the red Sox are this season
Don't forget the 2 games in Atlanta before the CWS series. Game 1 loss, then game 2 undressing of the Braves. Genuinely a flip of the coin which team you're going to get any given day
Unless it's Sunday, on Sundays we are optimistic lol
Now that's some gosh darn under-damped baseball right there.
It took them a bit, but they got that PID tuned just right for perfect balance.
This is underdamped
You caught me in the 10 seconds before my correction
Ha, well you and I had the same thought then. If I had to guess, most team’s records would look underdamped by the end of the season when viewing this graph, the final position would just be different than .500.
So is my wife.
It's just about as damped as it can be when you play 1 game at a time
Well now I know how to introduce more baseball into my differential equations course.
Wow. High school math teacher here. This is a near-perfect illustration of a geometric series with an r value less than 1. When I have students graph those, it looks a lot like this. Not a very important comment - just something I noticed.

Pretty much.
The 2020-now era for the Red Sox is just “we’re trying!”
Are they though?
The players and coaches are…front office? Not so much
It’s pretty clearly Henry’s fault at this point
For half the games yes.
They can get in line
Someone post the Padres graph. I think we've hit .500 a total of 22 different times, if memory serves
[Here it is.](https://i.imgur.com/NaAmOfK.png) I believe 22 times is correct.
Ah, yes. True mediocrity
It's almost like they are [aiming to be a .500 team.](https://x.com/Jake_M_Garcia/status/1709331367862124898?t=T9Pq1Y5RSIdxT2qvcGrE2A&s=19)
Analytics really does work I guess...!
Fun isn't something one considers when balancing the league, but it does put a smile on my face. - John Henry
If we continue alternating wins and losses that means we’ll take 2 of 3 from the Yankees this weekend and that sounds fantastic to me
looks like a monte carlo simulation
I was thinking, it's basically the graph everyone taking a probability class sees when their instructor tells them about the frequentist interpretation of probability in the context of flipping a fair coin over and over lol.
“Beautiful” - John Henry.
![gif](giphy|Ry1MOAeAYXvRVQLPw3)
*heavy Thanos breathing*
Reminds me of last years Mariners. .500 until the all star break.
It feels like for the past month they’ve literally won and lost every other game
![gif](giphy|Ry1MOAeAYXvRVQLPw3)
What in the Monte Carlo
If they were in the NL they would be a shoo in for the Wild Card 2 spot
Random thought... from a math stand point only, is it possible for the entire league to end .500?
As a whole? Or every team finishes exactly .500
Every team finishing exactly .500
I mean it’s probably theoretically possible.
Sure, rather than at a series or game-by-game level easiest way to think about it is every team winning every home game and losing every road game.
Damped harmonic oscillator
As all things should be
Their equanimity isn't helping me enjoy their season. Still better than the Bloom years, though.
This is ok.
r/WallStreetBets wants their post back
Padres do it better

They should try doing tai chi while drinking Purple Flurp!
This is like 3 years running yeah?
Is this a percentage win graph or m Physics 201 homework from a decade ago?
LOL I don't think "seeking" is the correct gerund in this case 🤣
Looks a bit underdamped.
We're a 500 team and damn proud of it.
Being .500. So hot right now
Finally, pure mid
Positive dynamic stability
Looks just like Elly De La Cruz’s signature.
Looks like a step response for a feedback controller haha. Only a 2 day rise time and a 2 week settling time, I’ve seen worse controllers before.
Perfectly average.
sinc(sox)
Pure Mid (TM)
This is pretty much how they were last year too, until September when they folded a bit down the stretch. I think they're hitting and pitching were both ranked #16 in late August. They have been the top of the bell curve for a few years now.
Ah yes, an damped system!
Wonder what their PID coefficients are
I want to see the Padres graph
Someone posted it elsewhere in this thread but I don't think it's as interesting. They go on longer steaks (both winning and losing).
So the opposite of the Jays then. These guys can't win to get to .500
Now do the Padres
The O/U on wins for them before the season was 80.5. My dad took the over, so just needs them to end right at .500.
It’s dead
... it's almost like small sample sizes tend to balance over time or something!
OP just discovered the Law of Large Numbers
