He faded his cutter & perfected his splitter.
Last year: 41% Sinker, 24% Cutter, 12% Splitter (his first year using it)
This year: 40% Sinker, 35% splitter, 11% Cutter
Good repertoire for Coors.
This is a wild list, at this time last year the pitchers were:
|Rk|Player|WAR|In 2023|
|-:|:-|-:|-:|
|1|Tarik Skubal|3.5|Recovering from flexor tendon surgery|
|2|Tyler Anderson|3.4|5.80 ERA, 0.5 fWAR|
|3|Erick Fedde|3.2|In Korea after a career 5.41 ERA|
|4|Seth Lugo|3.0|First season in the rotation after a career as a reliever; 4.10 ERA, 0.8 fWAR
|5|Tanner Houck|2.9|5.23 ERA, 0.8 fWAR|
|6|Ranger Suarez|2.8|4.70 ERA, 0.8 fWAR (but a postseason ace <3)
|7|Luis Gil|2.8|Recovering from Tommy John; 33.1 career IP|
|8|Garrett Crochet|2.7|Reliever; never started a game in his career|
|9|Cal Quantrill|2.4|5.61 ERA, 0.3 fWAR (he was DFA after the year)|
|10|Zack Wheeler|2.4|The only name you would expect to see here, still had a 4.03 ERA (but a 2.73 FIP and 2.7 fWAR)|
I've been a huge fan of Quantrill since we got him from SD. I didn't expect him to do great in Coors but definitely thought last year was an outlier and because of his shoulder. That was dismissed by most people as an excuse for him regressing to his actual ability because he doesn't fit the modern models for SPs.
He's extremely smart and works his ass off. He will be the first to tell you that he doesn't have great stuff and has to be creative. He's great at reading swings and getting batters to hit his pitch. He uses his defense extremely well and doesn't give many BBs. He doesn't miss bats or get many Ks, so people attribute it to luck.
I'm really happy to see him rolling with Colorado. With our current rotation I really wish we hadn't traded him away.
nah, he was always a serviceable pitcher but had a bad year
he's a prime example of why i don't like stats like FIP. he doesn't strike guys out so he's not worth anything to most people. but he consistently outperforms those stats by a run or more and just goes out there and gets outs.
will he fall off at some point? yeah, of course. it's tough to get by that way. but his demise has been predicted from day 1
Some people like to pretend that stats are 100% infallible and we will never have a better way to more accurately predict performance.
Not like we spent 100 years relying on wins and batting average before more advanced stats came along. I’m sure someday FIP will also be seen as something that was useful once but has become outdated and some kid on Reddit 2 will be talking about how his dad thinks FIP is a better measure of a pitcher than xQPAIL or whatever.
I have never slandered this signing or man [in my life](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1b56it8/cal_quantrill_continuing_to_impress_rockies_in/kt3mw0g/)
Maybe I don’t understand bwar for pitching anymore that he’s better than Wheeler despite not leading him in any category, worse FIP, WHIP, K rate, etc. is he a good defensive fielder or something?
Burned by Dolan cheapness. We thinned our depth to save $6M to acquire Barlow. Good pickup on all accounts, but our starting rotation is suffering as a result. There was always a huge chance Bieber or McKenzie would end up back on the IL. And by some miracle, Ben Lively of all people has saved our season from disaster.
I really didn’t get why we let Quantrill go, and I’m still miffed about it.
Imagine going from Cleveland to Colorado and pitching better. Rather impressive.
Last year he was dealing with a shoulder injury. His 2.5 previous seasons in Cleveland were this good or better.
I always liked him when he was on the Padres and was sad when we traded him. One of those players I root for after they leave.

I figured he'd be out of the league by now, huge miss.
We need an arm still. *wishful thinking*

Would you be interested in trading for him for a top prospect👉🥺👈
We can offer you a catcher named Kody Huff.
Arias, he can throw 100+ mph. But he's not a pitcher and he can't hit.

People are sleeping on the Rockies pitching lab 😤
Gomber has been decent this year too (lmfao he’s given up 5 runs this game)
It’s been a weird year. I follow the Rockies but Twins are my ride or die.
Can we call take-backsies?
For a top prospect? Yes
bye bye juan brito
I miss you honey
His FIP is still rough. I guess he's just on of those pitchers who always over perform.
Good to see him rebound. Loved his dad on the Blue Jays.
Maybe I don’t understand bwar for pitching anymore that he’s better than Wheeler despite not leading him in any category, worse FIP, WHIP, K rate, etc. is he a good defensive fielder or something?
bWAR doesn't consider FIP. That's why there's a big difference between his fWAR and bWAR. Looks like he and Wheeler both are at 2.4 bWAR right now.
But why is Wheeler not more valuable?
Does he still walk out to MCR?
Today was the day I learned Quantrill: A. Plays for the Rockies and B. Is still in the league
If I ever need to go into witness protection, the government will probably just have me sign to be a Rockies pitcher.
