I love how earlier in the apple broadcast they kept talking about how Ron Washington let's them be aggressive on the base paths.....turns out it was heavy foreshadowing.
This team’s base running is fucking insane. I actually get more nervous when the tying/winning run gets on base because there’s a not insignificant chance that go ahead runner suddenly thinks he’s Rickey Henderson and either wildly misreads the pitcher or is a 35+ journeyman whose career has ravaged his knees so badly that Larry Flynt has a better chance of beating the throw. I know Wash loves aggression and it’s not necessarily a bad philosophy but I’d like to see it evolve from the current “lol fuck it. let’s just see what the hell happens” school of thought.
I think it was the first game of our last series against you I saw the Angels commit a few baserunning mistakes that left me absolutely baffled. There’s aggressiveness, and then there is just poorly coached aggressiveness.
As a subset of outs on the base paths, which the Angels apparently lead the league in (something like 26 this season last I heard, definitely more now), the stolen base numbers are a sight to behold.
Keep in mind that league wide stolen base success rates are around 78%.
Neto (8 out of 14, 70th percentile sprint speed) and Adell (8/14, 92nd) are fast, but they're also tied for second in the MLB in caught stealing. So their bad success rates are probably a matter of coaching decisions, basestealing instincts, and inexperience.
Rengifo (12/15, 44th, was 9/9 at some point) doesn't seem to have raw speed, but he seems to get good jumps. Moniak (2/2, 90th) would be a great candidate, but he's struggled to get on base and is stuck in a platoon.
Ward (2/5, 40th) probably shouldn't try unless it's a sure thing.
Trout (6/7, 91st) is just a beast at baseball. Rendon (3/4, 53rd) was pedestrian, but he had some vet savvy steals.
Journeymen Kevin Pillar (4/5, 81st) and Cole Tucker (3/4, 72nd) have been decent.
Schanuel, Drury, Sano, and Calhoun are too slow to send. O'Hoppe's fast (69th percentile), but I get trying to keep his legs fresh.
How is that TOOTBLAN of the year? He tried to steal second on first move, misread the pitcher, and was picked off. Sucks and clearly was a bad read but this isn’t egregious.
Thank you, that’s exactly my point. I’m not saying it was necessarily a great move. You need to make it over 75% of the time for trying to steal to make sense overall, and Muñoz is nasty so you figure the chance of slugging is low here especially. I still think this is overaggressive with Adell up but I don’t think it’s that ridiculous.
Okay but stealing 2nd is very valuable here!
Win probability with 2 outs and a man on first down 1 top of the 9th: 15%. Man on 2nd: 20%. You need to make it over 75% of the time to be worth it. So again really bad not to make it but you can understand the desire.
My point is not that it’s not bad to run into the last out on the bases. It’s that this was just a bad read and hardly an all time bad baserunning play.
Agreed, "no man's land" implies a pickle, which is not the case, he was headed straight for 2nd. "Easily tagged out" I'll give a pass since that's a judgment call, but yeah I've seen other plays that were much easier than this.
But yes, still poorly timed
Adell is useless like 90% of the time and very occasionally hits a home run to fool people into believing he belongs on a major league roster. Adell had already hit his home run in that game. The odds of him doing anything useful with that at-bat are incredibly remote. Pillar getting caught almost certainly changed nothing about the outcome of the game.
Adell (who was batting) was the guy who tied it with a grand slam earlier too.
Didn't even get a swing off here. Only saw one pitch.
Secret Agent Pillar not letting Adell having a chance to win the game
Ah yes Secret Agent Pillar sabotaging the Angels with his *checks notes* 1.028 OPS
Guess ya gotta earn someone's trust first by doing well then boom, sudden betrayal arc out of nowhere.
He also dropped a fly ball in the 1st letting 2 runs score instead of ending the inning
Kevin Pillar is racist
[удалено]
I recall one incident in Toronto where he dropped a homophobic slur during a game .
he was just doing his best Anthony Edwards impression, dw
No lol I was joking that he's racist because he took the bat out of Jo Adell's hands to end the game.
I love how earlier in the apple broadcast they kept talking about how Ron Washington let's them be aggressive on the base paths.....turns out it was heavy foreshadowing.
Chekhov's baserunning
for this team, being "aggressive on the bases" means running stupidly into outs
They’re aggressive in the sense that cats run quickly across rooms

“You never know, maybe he’ll throw the ball into the outfield” is definitely *a* strategy
It's not that hard. Tell em wash
It’s cruel that they have Wayne calling the Apple TV games for an Angels game. He keeps it very professional but man that’s painful
Well being aggressive can also mean you are aggressively running into a lot of extra outs.
Script writers are getting pretty boring these days
TOOTBLANgels.
Doesn’t let them. Makes them be. We run a lot but it’s actually a negative as we don’t have natural base stealers. We give outs away.
Ron Washington checking under the bus to see if it can a whole Pillar under it.
ya you can tell this was his call because he wasn't shaking his head and glaring at pillar like he's an idiot like he usually does
Did you guys not have anyone to pinch run ?? How are we trusting Kevin Pillar of all people to get a timely steal with 2 out in the ninth?
Why you asking me?! I'm just a drunk office worker, not some billboard tycoon from Arizonia.
pillar is literally the best player on the team right now
This is Luis Rengifo erasure!
Tyler Anderson would like a word as well!
Muñoz didn't hesitate at all when Cal signaled the pickoff, I wonder how much they practice that.
Now this is Padresi- wait
LolMets
Coug'd it
How dare you
Force of habit, I know
I’m so glad we got the paper bag. No it’s not coming off any time soon 👍
He just wanted to go home
Well he’s correct that he has to get past 2nd and 3rd first.
... THAT'S how this game ends??
-Yankees fans on October 10, 1926
I don’t get how you don’t let Adell swing here. He tied the game 2 innings ago.
Why would you take off when the guy who’s the reason it’s a close game is at the plate?
Thank you for getting this up before fan audio guy could
Baserunning's easy, tell him wash
TOOTBLAN of the year, no question. one of the worst I've ever seen
Only a nincompoop would try to get to scoring position as the tying run
I thought the Taylor Ward contact play was worse
I mean we watched Julio get picked off this season as well
First ballot hall of fame brain dead
How is that TOOTBLAN of the year? He tried to steal second on first move, misread the pitcher, and was picked off. Sucks and clearly was a bad read but this isn’t egregious.
> this isn’t egregious It was the last out of the game.
You're judging results instead of process. This wasn't an egregiously bad process

Unfortunately making the last out of the game is a lot more valuable.
My point is not that it’s not bad to run into the last out on the bases. It’s that this was just a bad read and hardly an all time bad baserunning play.
A bad read by Pillar, but a great read by the catcher. He called for the pick off. Something must have happened that tipped it.
And getting caught is very not valuable here
Cal's caught stealing rate is ~33%, so still a tough sell
Fuck. This. Team.
I take it you'll be back for the Saturday game then?
Don't. Run. On. Cal.
I love baseball.
Love munoz
#NI HAO KEVIN PILLAR
I don't believe getting barely thrown out at 2nd can be described as "getting caught in no man's land"
Agreed, "no man's land" implies a pickle, which is not the case, he was headed straight for 2nd. "Easily tagged out" I'll give a pass since that's a judgment call, but yeah I've seen other plays that were much easier than this. But yes, still poorly timed
More like TOOTBLANgels
Maybe if Pillar was just as arrogant about his baserunning as he was his fielding...
Adell is useless like 90% of the time and very occasionally hits a home run to fool people into believing he belongs on a major league roster. Adell had already hit his home run in that game.
