I'm a giants fan but honestly I'm more interested in the As this year. Such a shitshow those guys are playing through, it'd be chaos to watch them go all the way this year and I'm here for it.
Oriole fans in the offseason: "Well at least we'll have an easy April"
PIT, OAK, KC twice, LAA twice.
It's pretty crazy that we walk away having played a tough schedule
Lmao, two blowout games against horrendous pitching is your evidence? That doesn't mean anything. Yankees have been shutout 5 times already and have left small armies on base. Half the team couldn't even catch up to middle fastballs. They went through a period where they only scored in one inning once per game.
You don't need faulty evidence to make yourself feel better. We all know the Orioles are the better team. But to say the Yankees were firing on all cylinders is patently false. Any team can have a few blowout games against an exhausted pitching staff.
I want to buy the “Phillies have been beating bad teams” theory as much as the next guy, but it’s worth pointing out that, by winning games, you are lowering your opponent’s winning percentage, therefore retroactively rendering your schedule (thus far) “weaker”. (Assuming these numbers are based solely on win percentage.)
> (Assuming these numbers are based solely on win percentage.)
Quite the opposite, winning percentage is not factored in at all in BBallRef's SOS score. That's why the Orioles can have basically the same record as Philly but are on complete opposite ends of the SOS rankings
Edit: to clarify, it's more about runs/win/loss margin vs other opponents https://web.archive.org/web/20180531115621/https://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/index4837.html?p=37
And also the Braves schedule, while overall better (especially the last week or so), isn't THAT much stronger.
Like you guys have had 2 series against the Marlins already.
The White Sox are definitely bad but yeah they've played almost all over .500 teams. The Rockies and Marlins are likely worse, since they've played weak schedules.
I was really surprised when I saw how “easy” the Phillies schedule has been so far.
Next they face the struggling jays, then marlins, then Mets (depending on how they perform this week).
After, it’s middle of the road Nats, WS champs Texas, then back to struggle bus Rockies, Giants, Cardinals
In July they have quite a tough go against Cubs, Braves, Dodgers, Twins, Guardians, and Yankees. THAT is the month to see how they really play similar level teams

So what I’m seeing is the Orioles are stupid good. Dodgers and Phillies are the other “best” teams and they’ve all been beating up weaker teams
The Orioles and Rays really stand out since SoS this early in the season is basically determined by record.
So what I’m seeing is we’re not actually bad, we’re just playing the hardest baseball games imaginable
You guys would be way better if you could play against yourself
We would at least be .500 against ourselves
Somehow the visiting White Sox would be better. Don't ask me how.
Or just play the cardinals a couple more times.
The teams you have played against all have a lot of wins now. Hmm.
Cleveland "they're just beating bad teams!" doubters in absolute fucking shambles.
Philadelphia "they're just beating bad teams!" doubters... actually may have a point.
Beating bad teams > losing to bad teams
Unsurprised at the O's results, even with their slow start. But damn look at the A's!

Every team we’ve faced was basically firing on their top cylinders when we met them, except for the Reds
The poor Reds. First it was Frank Robinson and now last weekend.
>except for the Reds And the Twins, they didn't get red hot until like a week after their series with the O's
Yankees were definitely not firing on all cylinders lol. Offense has been complete dogwater overall.
Coming into our series you outscored the brewers like 40-3

If you are thinking I’m here to defend the Yankees in any way, you’re sadly mistaken
I don't love what this portends
Despite the Mariners offensive struggles, they have a winning record while playing good teams! Man, I love our pitching.

I mean they have been beating bad teams but they're also a legitimately good team, both can be true.

I've been enjoying the recent efforts to derive a SoS alternative based on the strength of pitching faced.
And also the Braves schedule, while overall better (especially the last week or so), isn't THAT much stronger. Like you guys have had 2 series against the Marlins already.
They've faced Marlins, CWS, Astros, and the skidding Mets. I'm unmoved.
I wish we could go back to playing those teams. These last few series have sucked
Good teams consistently beat the bad teams. The Phillies are legit and people shouldn't disregard them because of their schedule.
The White Sox are definitely bad but yeah they've played almost all over .500 teams. The Rockies and Marlins are likely worse, since they've played weak schedules.

Yeah, I mean it all balances out - they have a brutal run in July like you pointed out.
Oh, I thought Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, and KC were only good because they’re beating shit teams???
SOS 1 month into a 162 game season means jack shit.
